"Airport shuttle" covers a lot of different things: a shared van that drops passengers at several hotels, a scheduled coach to a downtown terminal, a hotel courtesy bus, and the rail links many airports now run to the city centre. What they share is the model. You pay per seat, you travel with other people and you follow the vehicle's schedule and route rather than your own.
A private chauffeur is the opposite: you pay per vehicle, nobody else is on board and the car goes straight from the terminal to your address. This page compares the two honestly, with real airport rail fares from the operators and published Elly8.net transfer prices, and says when the shuttle or train is the smarter choice.
Is a private transfer better than a shared airport shuttle?
A shared shuttle or airport train is cheaper per person and fine for a solo traveller with light bags and time to spare. A private transfer is better when you want to leave the moment you clear arrivals, go straight to your door without other stops, travel with family or luggage, or arrive on time for a meeting.
The trade is time and certainty for money. On a shared shuttle you save on the fare and spend more of the trip waiting or detouring. In a private car, you pay for the whole vehicle and get the whole journey to yourself.
How shared shuttles work
Shared-ride airport shuttles usually work in one of three ways.
Shared door-to-door vans. You book a seat, the van collects passengers from one or more flights and drops them at several hotels or addresses. The price per seat is low, but the van may wait until it has enough passengers, and your stop could be first or last.
Scheduled coaches. Airport buses run at set times to a downtown terminal or a few main stops. They are cheap and predictable on paper, but you still need to get from the stop to your hotel.
Hotel courtesy shuttles. Many airport-area hotels run free shuttles on a loop. These are useful if you are staying at that hotel, and of no use otherwise.
In every case, the vehicle's schedule, other passengers and the route set your journey time.
How a private chauffeur transfer works
With Elly8.net, the price is fixed per vehicle and all-in: chauffeur, vehicle, taxes, the standard gratuity and airport meet and greet. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost. The chauffeur tracks your flight, meets you inside arrivals with a name board, and complimentary waiting applies after a tracked landing. There are no other stops unless you ask for them.
The real numbers: airport trains and private transfers
Airport rail links are the most common low-cost option in our cities, and their fares are published by the operators. Here they are next to Elly8.net's published private transfer prices for the same airports.
| Airport | Rail or shuttle option | Published fare and time | Elly8.net private transfer |
|---|---|---|---|
| JFK, New York | AirTrain JFK to Jamaica or Howard Beach, then subway or LIRR | US$8.75 AirTrain fare plus the onward subway or rail fare | JFK to Midtown from US$210 (Business Sedan) to US$550 (Executive Sprinter) |
| Toronto Pearson | UP Express to Union Station | C$12.35 adult standard fare, about 28 minutes | Pearson to downtown from US$155 to US$405 |
| London Heathrow | Heathrow Express to Paddington | From £10 advance, £26 standard single; 15 minutes, every 15 minutes | Heathrow to Mayfair from US$195 to US$510 |
| Chicago O'Hare | CTA Blue Line to the Loop | US$5 fare from O'Hare | O'Hare to the Loop and Magnificent Mile from US$215 to US$560 |
| San Francisco SFO | BART to downtown San Francisco | About 30 minutes to downtown | Fixed-price quote in the web booker |

Two things stand out. First, for one person, rail is a fraction of the cost of a private car, and in London and Toronto it is also fast. Second, rail ends at a station. From Paddington, Union Station or Jamaica, you still need a taxi, a walk or more transit to reach your hotel, with your bags.
The per-person maths
Shuttles and trains are priced per person. Private cars are priced per vehicle. That changes the comparison as soon as more than one person travels.
Take a family of four from Heathrow to Mayfair. Four standard Heathrow Express singles at £26 come to £104, before the taxi from Paddington to the hotel. A private Elly8.net Business SUV from Heathrow to Mayfair is US$255 for the vehicle, door to door, met inside arrivals, with room for the bags. The train is still cheaper, but the gap is smaller than it looks for one traveller, and the private car removes two transfers with luggage.
In Toronto, four UP Express adult fares at C$12.35 are about C$49, plus the onward trip from Union Station. A private Business SUV from Pearson to downtown is US$205. Again rail wins on price; the private car wins on effort.

When the shuttle or train is the better choice
- You travel alone with a carry-on. Heathrow Express or UP Express is quick, cheap and frequent.
- Your hotel is next to the station. If you are staying near Paddington or Union Station, rail is the obvious choice.
- You are not in a hurry. On a leisure trip with an afternoon arrival, a few extra stops on a shared van cost you little.
- Your hotel runs a free shuttle. For an airport hotel, use it.
- Budget comes first. For students and backpackers, rail and shared shuttles are the right answer.
When a private chauffeur is the better choice
Families. Children, strollers, car seats and several suitcases make rail transfers hard work. Child seats are available on request with Elly8.net.
Groups. A Business SUV or an Executive Sprinter takes the whole group in one vehicle at one price. See group transportation.
Late arrivals. Shuttles and trains thin out late at night. A chauffeur tracking a delayed flight is there when you land.
Meetings on arrival. If you need to be in Midtown at 10 a.m., a direct car with no other stops is worth the difference. Our corporate car service is built for it.
Long flights. After an overnight flight from North America to London or Paris, door to door with a name board inside arrivals is a different arrival from two trains and a taxi.
Departures. A car outside your hotel at the time you choose, rather than a shuttle that collects from several hotels, means you can calculate your airport arrival precisely.
A worked example: a family of four arriving at JFK
A family of four lands at JFK at 7 p.m. with four suitcases, heading to a hotel in Midtown.
By AirTrain and subway. The AirTrain JFK fare is US$8.75 each, charged at Jamaica or Howard Beach, so US$35 for four adults, plus the onward subway or rail fare for each person, then the walk from the station to the hotel. Children under five ride the AirTrain free. It is the cheapest option by far, and it involves several changes with luggage at the end of a long day.
By shared shuttle. A lower fare per seat than a private car, but the van may wait for other flights and stop at several hotels first.
By Elly8.net Business SUV. US$275 for the vehicle, all-in, met inside arrivals with a name board, child seats fitted if you asked for them, straight to the hotel door. Tolls are billed at cost.
For a solo traveller with a backpack, AirTrain is the obvious answer. For this family, many parents decide the private car is worth the difference.
What to check before booking a shared shuttle
- How long it waits to fill the van after your flight lands.
- How many stops it makes, and where yours falls in the order.
- What happens if your flight is late and you miss the booked departure.
- Luggage limits, especially for skis, golf bags and strollers.
- Whether the price is per person, and what it costs for your whole party.
Shuttles for events and weddings
The word "shuttle" also describes something we do: moving guests between hotels, venues and airports for a wedding, a conference or a corporate event. These are private shuttles, booked for your group only, using SUVs and Sprinters on a timetable you set. See conference transportation and wedding limousine for how they work.

Departures: the forgotten half of the trip
Most shuttle comparisons focus on arrivals, but departures are where timing matters most. A shared shuttle collecting from several hotels has to build in time for every stop, so it often asks you to be ready well before you would otherwise leave. A private car is booked for the time you choose, from your door, and goes straight to the terminal. For an early international flight, that can mean an extra hour of sleep. Round trips are priced slightly below two one-way transfers, for example JFK to Midtown and back from US$400 in a Business Sedan.
Who drives
Toronto and the GTA run on the Elly8 fleet and chauffeurs. In every other city, rides are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network, with Elly8.net taking the booking, fixing the price and running the 24/7 desk. Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer.

Frequently asked questions
Is a shared shuttle cheaper than a private car?
Per person, yes. Shuttles and airport trains charge per seat; for one traveller they cost a fraction of a private car. Elly8.net prices are per vehicle, for example LaGuardia to Midtown from US$145, so the gap narrows for families and groups sharing one car.
How long does a shared shuttle take compared with a private transfer?
It depends on the number of stops and the wait to fill the van. A private transfer leaves when you clear arrivals and goes straight to your address. Airport trains are fast to the station, such as Heathrow Express at 15 minutes to Paddington, but the onward trip to your hotel is extra.
What if my flight is late?
With a shuttle or train you take a later departure, if one is running. An Elly8.net chauffeur tracks your flight, adjusts to the actual landing time and applies complimentary waiting after a tracked landing, so a delay does not cost you the transfer.
Can a private transfer stop at two hotels?
Yes. Multi-stop trips are available; add the extra stop when you book or use the web booker, which prices the full route before you confirm. This suits families splitting between hotels or colleagues dropping at different offices. The chauffeur waits while bags are unloaded at the first stop.
Do you provide child seats?
Yes, on request. Add the seats when you book and they are fitted before pickup. Shared shuttles and trains rarely offer child seats, which is one of the main reasons families choose a private transfer. A Business SUV gives extra room for strollers and luggage.
What is the cancellation policy?
Free cancellation more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show. Refunds go to the original card. See the cancellation policy.
