The honest answer to "chauffeur or taxi" depends on who is travelling, with how much luggage, at what hour and how much the trip has to go right. For a single traveller with a small bag landing mid-afternoon, a yellow cab from JFK into Manhattan costs far less than a pre-booked car. For a family of four with six suitcases and a toddler, or an executive landing at 11:40 p.m. with a 9 a.m. meeting, the calculation changes.
This page sets out the real numbers, using published taxi fares from city regulators and the fixed prices on Elly8.net, and says plainly when the taxi is the right choice. We book chauffeurs for a living, so we have a view, but the numbers are the numbers.
Is a chauffeur worth it compared with a taxi?
For one traveller with light luggage at an off-peak hour, a taxi is usually cheaper and perfectly good. A pre-booked chauffeur is worth it when you need a guaranteed car at a late or busy hour, room for luggage or more than four people, child seats, a meeting point inside arrivals, or a price fixed before you travel.
The difference is not only price. A taxi is a vehicle you find when you arrive. A chauffeur is a reservation that is waiting for you. One is cheaper on average; the other removes the uncertainty.
The real numbers: JFK to Midtown Manhattan
New York is the clearest example because the city publishes its taxi airport fares. According to the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission, a yellow cab between JFK and Manhattan is a flat US$70, plus a 50-cent MTA State Surcharge, a US$1.00 Improvement Surcharge, a US$2.50 New York State Congestion Surcharge, a 75-cent congestion relief zone toll and a US$2.00 airport access fee on pickups at JFK. There is a US$5.00 rush-hour surcharge from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays, excluding legal holidays. Tolls and tip are extra.
| JFK to Midtown | Base | Fixed surcharges | Weekday 4-8 p.m. | Tip | Tolls | Total before tolls |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Yellow taxi (flat fare) | US$70.00 | US$6.75 | +US$5.00 | not included, typically 15-20% | extra | about US$77 to US$82 plus tip |
| Elly8.net Business Sedan | US$210 | included | no change | standard gratuity included | billed at cost | US$210 |
| Elly8.net Business SUV | US$275 | included | no change | standard gratuity included | billed at cost | US$275 |
| Elly8.net Executive Sprinter | US$550 | included | no change | standard gratuity included | billed at cost | US$550 |
With a 20% tip on the flat fare, the taxi lands at roughly US$91 to US$96 before tolls. The Elly8.net Business Sedan at US$210 is more than twice that. For one traveller who is happy to join the taxi line, the taxi is the better value, and we would not pretend otherwise.
What the higher price buys is everything the taxi does not do: a chauffeur tracking your flight, meeting you inside arrivals with a name board, help with bags, waiting after a delayed landing without charging for the delay, and a price agreed before you leave home. Our JFK car service page lists every published route, from LaGuardia to Midtown from US$145 to Newark from US$215.
How taxi fares work
Taxi pricing differs by city, but the structure is similar almost everywhere.
Metered fares. Most taxi trips are metered. In New York, the TLC meter starts at US$3.00 and adds 70 cents per one-fifth of a mile when moving above 12 mph, or per 60 seconds in slow traffic or when stopped. That second part matters at airports: a trip that takes 30 minutes on a clear road can take twice that at 5 p.m., and the meter keeps running.
Airport flat fares. Some airports have a regulated flat fare for the main city route, like JFK to Manhattan. Flat fares remove the traffic risk on that one route, but surcharges, tolls and the tip still sit on top, and the flat fare usually covers only that route.
Airport surcharges. Many cities add an airport fee. New York charges a US$5.00 surcharge plus the meter for LaGuardia trips, and a US$20.00 Newark surcharge on top of the meter for taxi trips to Newark, according to the TLC.
Tips. In North America the tip is expected and is not in the fare. With Elly8.net, the standard gratuity is already in the price.
How a pre-booked chauffeur is priced
Elly8.net prices are fixed per vehicle, not per person, and all-in. The price includes the chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes, the standard gratuity and airport meet and greet. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost and shown separately. Traffic does not change the price, the hour does not change the price, and there is no surge.
Because the price is per vehicle, the cost per traveller falls as the group grows. A Business SUV from JFK to Midtown at US$275 carries several people and their bags; split four ways, that is under US$70 each. An Executive Sprinter at US$550 carries a team.

When the taxi is the better choice
Taxis are the right answer more often than chauffeur companies like to admit.
- One person, one carry-on, mid-afternoon. If the line is short and the traffic light, the taxi is cheaper and almost as fast.
- Short hops inside the city. For a ten-block ride in Manhattan or a quick trip across the Loop in Chicago, hailing a cab is quicker than booking anything.
- Spontaneous trips. If you do not know when you will leave the restaurant, a taxi or a nearby rank avoids paying for waiting time.
- Tight budgets. For a student or a solo traveller watching every dollar, public transport or a taxi makes more sense than a chauffeured car.
For the very cheapest airport trip, rail is often the answer. In Chicago, the CTA Blue Line from O'Hare is a US$5 fare according to the Chicago Transit Authority. In London, Heathrow Express runs to Paddington in 15 minutes, every 15 minutes, with advance fares from £10. If you travel light and your hotel is near the station, that is hard to beat.
When a pre-booked chauffeur wins
Late and early flights. At midnight, the taxi line can be long or the rank thin, and a 6 a.m. departure depends on a cab arriving when you need it. A reservation removes both problems.
Groups and luggage. The TLC's own passenger FAQ sets the maximum in a four-passenger yellow cab at four. A family of five, or four adults with golf bags or ski gear, needs two cabs or one SUV. Two taxis from JFK to Midtown with 20% tips come to roughly US$185 to US$195 before tolls, against US$275 for one Business SUV that keeps the group together, meets you inside arrivals and is sized for the bags.
Child seats. The TLC FAQ notes that passengers in TLC-licensed vehicles may bring and use their own car seats. Travelling with an infant seat and a booster through an airport is hard work. Elly8.net provides child seats on request, fitted before you get in.
Meetings and schedules. If you are going straight to a meeting, a chauffeur who knows the entrance, keeps the bags and waits is worth more than the fare difference. Our hourly chauffeur service in New York is US$105 an hour in a Business Sedan, with a 3-hour minimum.
Fixed budgets. For a company, a fixed price on every ride, booked in advance and invoiced monthly, is easier to approve than a stack of taxi receipts. That is the logic behind our corporate car service and corporate accounts.
Events and nights out. After a concert or a game, everyone wants a taxi at once. A car booked for a set time, waiting at an agreed spot, beats standing at the kerb. See event transportation.
Airports: the taxi rank vs meet and greet
The biggest practical difference shows up at the airport. With a taxi, you clear arrivals, follow the signs to the taxi rank, wait in line and take the next car. With a pre-booked chauffeur, the chauffeur is tracking your flight, adjusts to your actual landing and meets you inside arrivals with a name board. If your bags are slow or immigration is busy, complimentary waiting applies after a tracked landing.
That matters most at the airports with long walks and long lines, and at international arrivals after a long flight. It matters least at a small regional airport at 2 p.m. Read more on our meet and greet and airport transfers pages.

Who drives
Taxis are licensed by the city they work in. Elly8.net rides are operated in the same regulated way: Toronto and the GTA run on the Elly8 fleet and chauffeurs, and in every other city rides are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network, with Elly8.net taking the booking, fixing the price and running the 24/7 desk. Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer.

Frequently asked questions
Is a taxi cheaper than a car service from JFK?
Yes, for one or two travellers. The NYC TLC flat fare from JFK to Manhattan is US$70 plus about US$6.75 in fixed surcharges, US$5 more on weekday afternoons from 4 to 8 p.m., plus tolls and tip. An Elly8.net Business Sedan is US$210 all-in, including gratuity and meet and greet, with tolls billed at cost.
When does the gap between a chauffeur and taxis narrow?
When the group needs two taxis. Prices are per vehicle, so five travellers with luggage in one Business SUV from JFK to Midtown pay US$275 in total, against roughly US$185 to US$195 for two cabs with surcharges and tips before tolls, and the SUV adds meet and greet, flight tracking and one vehicle for everyone.
Do taxis wait if my flight is late?
Taxis do not wait for you; you join the rank when you land. An Elly8.net chauffeur tracks your flight, adjusts to the actual landing time and applies complimentary waiting after a tracked landing, so a delay does not mean a missed pickup or a charge for the delay itself.
Do taxis provide child seats?
Usually you bring your own. The NYC TLC says passengers in TLC-licensed vehicles may bring and use their own car seats and booster seats. Elly8.net provides child seats on request; add them when you book and they are fitted before pickup.
How many people fit in a taxi?
In New York, the TLC sets the legal maximum at four passengers in a four-passenger yellow cab. Larger groups need two cabs or a larger vehicle. Elly8.net offers Business and First Class SUVs and the Executive Sprinter for groups and heavy luggage.
Are Elly8.net prices really fixed?
Yes. The published price is per vehicle and all-in: chauffeur, vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and airport meet and greet. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost. Traffic, time of day and demand do not change the price.
What is the cancellation policy?
Free cancellation more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show. Refunds go to the original card. See the cancellation policy.
