A black car service is a pre-arranged, chauffeur-driven luxury sedan or SUV booked for a set price, rather than hailed on the street or matched by an app. The name comes from the dark Lincoln Town Cars that once carried most of Manhattan's business travel; today the cars are E-Class and S-Class Mercedes, Cadillac and Lincoln sedans, Suburbans, Escalades and Navigators, but the idea is the same. You know who is coming, in what, at what time and for how much.
Elly8.net books black car service in 141 cities across the USA, Canada and Europe. Every price is fixed and all-in, per vehicle, covering the chauffeur, vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and airport meet and greet. An airport run starts at US$90 in Lisbon and Warsaw, US$125 at Reagan National for downtown Washington, US$155 from Toronto Pearson and US$210 from JFK to Midtown Manhattan.
What is a black car service and how is it different from a taxi or rideshare?
A black car service is a pre-booked luxury sedan or SUV with a licensed, commercially insured chauffeur and a price agreed before pickup. Unlike a taxi there is no meter, and unlike rideshare there is no surge or random match: the vehicle class, the chauffeur and the fare are confirmed in writing.
The difference shows up in the details. A black car chauffeur is waiting before you are ready, not arriving in eight minutes. The vehicle is a specific class you chose, not whatever car is nearest. The fare is the same at 5 pm in the rain as at 11 am on a Sunday. And the booking can carry a flight number, a child seat, a cost centre or an instruction to use a company name on the arrivals board.
In New York, where the term began, chauffeured cars dispatched on a pre-arranged basis work from bases licensed by the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission, which lists a black car base and a luxury limousine base among its licence types. Every city has its own rules, and our partners hold the licences and commercial insurance their city requires.
Business class or first class: choosing the car
Elly8.net prices five vehicle classes in every city. The black car classes are the four sedans and SUVs; the Executive Sprinter covers groups.
- Business Sedan: Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac CT6, Lincoln Continental or similar in North America; E-Class or BMW 5 Series in Europe. Up to 3 passengers and 2 large bags. This is the everyday black car.
- First Class Sedan: Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series or similar. Up to 3 passengers and 2 bags. More rear legroom, a quieter cabin and the car most executives ask for by name.
- Business SUV or Van: Chevrolet Suburban or GMC Yukon XL in North America; Mercedes-Benz V-Class in Europe. Up to 6 passengers and 6 bags.
- First Class SUV: Cadillac Escalade or Lincoln Navigator in North America; V-Class VIP or Range Rover in Europe. Up to 6 passengers and 6 bags.
Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer. The jump from business to first class is real but not huge: at Reagan National it is US$125 for a business sedan and US$220 for a First Class Sedan; at Toronto Pearson, US$155 and US$275. For one traveller with a laptop bag, the business sedan does the job. For a client pickup, a long ride after a red-eye or a principal who works in the car, the first-class sedan earns its price. The executive car service page covers first-class bookings in more detail.

Beyond the airport, the same black cars are booked by the hour from US$85 to US$115 an hour in a business sedan depending on the city, with a 3-hour minimum, or as packages: a full-day chauffeur, an evening out, a private city tour or a signature day trip. Tolls and parking are billed at cost. The packages page shows every city side by side.
Black car service vs Uber Black and other app tiers
App premium tiers, Uber Black among them, put a dark sedan or SUV at the curb and are a reasonable choice for an unplanned trip across town. The differences that matter come from how the ride is booked.
| Question | Elly8.net black car | App premium tier | Taxi |
|---|---|---|---|
| When is the price known? | At booking, fixed and all-in | Quoted at request; dynamic pricing applies | At the end, by meter |
| Can it be booked days ahead? | Yes, confirmed in writing | Scheduled requests, not guaranteed | No |
| Who meets you at the airport? | Chauffeur in arrivals with a name board | Driver at the app pickup zone | Taxi rank |
| Flight delay | Tracked; complimentary waiting after a tracked landing | Driver may cancel or charge waiting | Not applicable |
| Vehicle class | The exact class you booked | The tier's eligible models | Whatever cab is next |
| Child seats | On request | Limited cities | Rarely |
| Company billing | Account, monthly invoice, cost centres | Business profiles | Receipts |
We do not claim a black car is always cheaper. At a quiet hour across a short distance, an app or a taxi will often cost less. A pre-booked black car is the better choice when timing matters, when a price has to be approved in advance, when there are bags and children, and at the hours when app prices climb. The Uber Black vs a pre-booked chauffeur page goes through this in detail, and chauffeur vs taxi covers the metered side.
Black car vs limousine
People use "limo" and "black car" interchangeably, and on most airport runs they mean the same thing: a chauffeured sedan or SUV. A stretch limousine is a different vehicle for a different job, a celebration car for eight with little luggage space. For airports, meetings and hotel transfers, book a black car. For weddings, proms and nights out where the vehicle is part of the occasion, see limousine service and black car vs limousine.
Who books black car service
Business travellers. The core of the service: the airport, the hotel, the office, the dinner and back to the airport. In cities with three airports, such as Washington with Dulles, Reagan and BWI, the desk will tell you which one makes sense for your meetings; Reagan National to downtown is a short drive, while Dulles is US$255 in a business sedan and a much longer one.
Executive assistants and travel managers. A booking can be made for someone else, with their mobile number for the chauffeur and the assistant copied on the confirmation. With a corporate account, every ride lands on a monthly invoice with the cost centre attached.
Families. An SUV with child seats from Pearson or DFW to the hotel is easier than queueing for a taxi that may not take three car seats. Child seats are available on request.
Visitors who want certainty. First trips to Rome, Paris or Montreal are calmer when the car is waiting and the fare is already paid.
What to expect from the chauffeur
A black car service is judged in the first two minutes. The chauffeur is in place before the pickup time, in dark business attire, with the vehicle clean, cooled or heated to the season and the rear seat clear. At an airport, that means waiting in arrivals with a name board; at a hotel, waiting at the driveway with a message to say the car is outside; at an office, waiting where the building allows rather than double-parked with hazard lights on.
Inside the car, the default is quiet. Chauffeurs do not start conversations on a work call, do not play the radio unless asked and do not discuss passengers or destinations with anyone. Water and a charging cable are standard in most cities. If you prefer a particular route, a temperature or a stop for coffee, say so; if you would rather the chauffeur chose the route, they will, using live traffic.
Bags are loaded and unloaded by the chauffeur. If you are travelling with something fragile or valuable, such as a garment bag, instruments or sample cases, put it in the booking notes so the right vehicle is sent.
Black car service around town, not just to the airport
Airport runs are the bulk of black car bookings, but the same car works for every ride where timing or appearance matters: hotel to a client's office, a lunch across town, a ride to a train station with luggage, a late dinner where a taxi is hard to find afterwards. Fixed packages cover the most common longer bookings, and the web booker prices any point-to-point address in the cities we serve, so a ride from a Back Bay hotel to Cambridge or from Yorkville to a Bay Street tower is reserved the same way as an airport transfer.
For cross-town rides with several stops, book by the hour; for train stations with luggage, see train station transfers.
How a black car booking works
- Enter the pickup and drop-off, with the flight number for an airport pickup.
- Choose the vehicle class by passengers and bags, and add notes, child seats or stops.
- Press Reserve now on the city's price list, or use the web booker for any address. Confirmation comes by email and the chauffeur's details follow before pickup.
Cancellation terms are the same everywhere: free more than 72 hours before pickup; 10% within 72 hours; 50% within 48 hours; 100% within 24 hours or for a no-show. Refunds go back to the original card.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a black car service cost?
On the Elly8.net price lists, a one-way airport run in a business sedan ranges from US$90 in Lisbon and Warsaw to US$235 from Houston Intercontinental to the Galleria on the main city-centre routes, with JFK to Midtown at US$210. Longer resort runs, such as Denver to Aspen, cost more. First-class sedans cost roughly 75% more than business sedans. Every price is per vehicle and includes chauffeur, vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet; tolls and parking are billed at cost.
Is black car service the same as a limo?
For airport and business trips, mostly yes: both mean a chauffeur-driven sedan or SUV booked in advance. A stretch limousine is a separate vehicle for celebrations, with room for about eight people but little luggage. For airports, meetings and hotels, book a black car; for weddings, proms and nights out, a limousine.
Is a black car more expensive than Uber Black?
Sometimes, sometimes not. App premium tiers use dynamic pricing, so a short trip at a quiet hour can cost less in an app, while peak hours, airport runs and storm days often favour a fixed price. The black car price is known and paid in advance, includes gratuity and meet and greet, and does not change with demand.
What cars are used?
Business sedans are Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac CT6, Lincoln Continental or similar, with E-Class or BMW 5 Series in Europe. First-class sedans are S-Class or BMW 7 Series. SUVs are Suburbans, Yukon XLs, Escalades and Navigators in North America and Mercedes V-Class or Range Rover in Europe. Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer.
Are the chauffeurs licensed and insured?
Yes. In Toronto and the GTA the cars and chauffeurs are the Elly8 fleet. Everywhere else, rides are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network, holding the licences their city requires, with Elly8.net taking the booking and running the 24/7 desk.
Are child seats available?
Yes, on request at booking. Note each child's age or weight so the right seat is fitted. For two or more children with luggage, a Business SUV, up to six passengers and six bags, is usually the better vehicle.
What is the cancellation policy?
Free cancellation more than 72 hours before pickup; 10% within 72 hours; 50% within 48 hours; 100% within 24 hours or for a no-show. Refunds go back to the original card.
