Uber and Lyft changed how most people move around a city, and for a lot of trips they are the sensible choice. Open the app, see a price, and a car arrives in a few minutes. For a quick ride across town at a quiet hour, it is hard to argue with that.
The case for a pre-booked chauffeur starts where the app gets less predictable: when everyone leaves the stadium at once, when you land at midnight and the pickup lot is a ten-minute walk, when there are five of you with luggage, or when a company needs to know the price of a trip before it happens. This page compares the two honestly, with the published Elly8.net prices and the rideshare companies' own descriptions of how their pricing works.
Is a chauffeur better than Uber or Lyft?
Not always. For one or two people with light bags at a normal hour, Uber or Lyft is usually cheaper and fast enough. A pre-booked chauffeur is better when timing and certainty matter: late or early flights, event nights when demand spikes, groups with luggage, child seats, meetings, and trips that need a fixed, all-in price before you travel.
Think of it this way. Rideshare is on-demand: price and availability are set by the market at the moment you tap the button. A chauffeur is a reservation: the price and the car are set when you book, days or weeks ahead.
How Uber and Lyft pricing works
Rideshare prices are dynamic. The app quotes a fare when you request the ride, and that fare reflects distance, expected time, the vehicle type and, crucially, demand at that moment.
Uber explains surge pricing on its own pricing page: it applies automatically "when there are more riders in a given area than available drivers." The company describes higher prices as a way to bring more drivers into a busy area while some riders wait or choose another option, and it says prices update frequently as conditions change. Lyft also prices dynamically when demand is high. In practice, that means the same trip can cost very different amounts at 2 p.m. on a Tuesday and at 11 p.m. after a concert.
Other items can sit on top of the base fare, depending on the city: airport fees, tolls, local surcharges and the tip. In New York, for example, the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission lists a US$2.75 New York State Congestion Surcharge for for-hire vehicles, the licence category that app-based rides in the city fall under.
None of this is hidden; the app shows the price before you confirm. The point is that the price is set at request time, not at booking time.
How Elly8.net pricing works
Elly8.net prices are fixed per vehicle and all-in. The published price includes the chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes, the standard gratuity and airport meet and greet. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost and shown separately. The price does not change with traffic, weather, time of day or demand, because there is no surge.

When Uber or Lyft is the better choice
We would rather you book us for the trips where we add value. For these, the app is usually the right call:
- Short city hops. A ten-minute ride from your hotel to dinner on a weeknight.
- Spontaneous plans. When you do not know when you will leave, paying a chauffeur to wait makes little sense.
- Solo travellers on a budget. One person, one bag, mid-afternoon, light traffic.
- Where rail is excellent. If your hotel is near the station, the train beats every car. UP Express runs from Toronto Pearson to Union Station in about 28 minutes for a C$12.35 adult standard fare, and BART reaches downtown San Francisco from SFO in about 30 minutes.
When a pre-booked chauffeur wins
Event nights. When a stadium, arena or theatre empties, thousands of people open the same apps at the same time. That is exactly the situation surge pricing is designed for. A chauffeur booked for 10:45 p.m. at an agreed spot does not change price because the game went to overtime. See concert transportation and sports event transportation.
Weather and holidays. Rain, snow and New Year's Eve push demand up and supply down. A reservation made in advance is unaffected.
Late and early flights. At 5 a.m., you want a car outside your door at 5 a.m., not a search for a nearby driver. At midnight, you want someone waiting inside arrivals.
Groups and luggage. Four adults with checked bags, golf clubs or ski gear quickly outgrow a standard car. Our Business SUV and Sprinter van with driver are booked for the group and its luggage, and the price is per vehicle, so the cost per person drops as the group grows.
Families with small children. Child seats are available on request and fitted before you get in. With rideshare, families usually carry their own.
Business travel. A fixed price, booked by an assistant, invoiced monthly with cost centres and PO numbers, is easier to manage than individual app receipts. See corporate accounts.
Airports: pickup lots vs meet and greet
Many airports send rideshare pickups to a designated zone, level or lot, and the walk or shuttle to reach it varies by airport and terminal. After a long flight, that is one more step between you and your hotel.
An Elly8.net chauffeur tracks your flight, meets you inside arrivals with a name board, helps with bags and walks you to the car. Complimentary waiting applies after a tracked landing, so slow baggage or a long immigration line is not a problem. Read our airport transfers and meet and greet pages for how this works at each airport.
Uber Black and premium tiers
Rideshare's premium tiers, such as Uber Black and Black SUV, put you in a nicer car with a higher-rated driver, and for many trips they are a good middle ground. They still price at request time and follow the app's pickup and waiting rules. We compare them in detail on Uber Black vs a pre-booked chauffeur.
A worked example: concert night in Las Vegas
Picture four friends at a show on the Strip, leaving at 11 p.m. with twenty thousand other people. With rideshare, they wait for the crowd to clear or pay whatever the app shows in that moment, then walk to the venue's rideshare area. With an Elly8.net evening out and event night package, from US$475 in a Business Sedan or US$600 in a Business SUV, the chauffeur takes them to dinner, waits during the show and is at the agreed spot when it ends. Whether that is worth it depends on the night; for a birthday or a client evening, it usually is.
A worked example: a Monday in New York
An executive lands at LaGuardia at 8 a.m., has three meetings in Midtown and the Financial District, and flies out of JFK at 7 p.m. Rideshare means four or five separate requests, each priced at the moment. An Elly8.net hourly chauffeur at US$105 an hour in a Business Sedan keeps one car and one driver all day, with the bags in the trunk. For a heavy schedule, a roadshow chauffeur day from US$945 fixes the whole day's cost in advance.
Deciding in under a minute
If you are not sure which to choose for a particular trip, five questions usually settle it.
- Is the time fixed? A flight, a meeting or a show start time points to a reservation. A dinner with no end time points to the app.
- Will demand spike when you leave? Stadiums, arenas, festivals, holidays and storms all push on-demand prices up. A fixed price removes that risk.
- How many people and bags? Up to two people with carry-ons: the app is fine. Families, golf bags, ski gear or a team: book the vehicle that fits.
- Do you need anything specific? Child seats, a name board inside arrivals, a chauffeur who waits during a meeting, or an NDA are reasons to book ahead.
- Who is paying? If a company is paying and needs cost centres and one invoice, a corporate account is simpler than dozens of app receipts.
If most of your answers point to flexibility, use the app. If most point to certainty, book a chauffeur.
Rideshare abroad
North American travellers often assume their home app works the same way everywhere. Availability, vehicle tiers, airport pickup rules and local licensing differ by country and city, and in some European cities the options are narrower than at home. Booking the arrival in advance, such as Heathrow to Mayfair from US$195 or Charles de Gaulle to the 8th arrondissement from US$170, means the first hour after a long flight is already settled, in US dollars, with an English-speaking desk on call.
Who drives
Uber and Lyft drivers work under each city's rules for app-based rides. Elly8.net rides are operated by professional chauffeurs: Toronto and the GTA run on the Elly8 fleet and chauffeurs, and in every other city rides are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network, with Elly8.net taking the booking, fixing the price and running the 24/7 desk. Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer, seven for Rolls-Royce, Maybach and Bentley.

Frequently asked questions
Is Uber cheaper than a car service?
Usually, for one or two people at a normal hour. Rideshare fares are set when you request the ride and can rise when demand is high. Elly8.net prices are fixed and all-in, for example JFK to Midtown from US$210 in a Business Sedan, including gratuity and meet and greet, with tolls billed at cost.
Does Elly8.net use surge pricing?
No. Every published price is fixed per vehicle and does not change with demand, weather or time of day. The price you see when you book is the price you pay, plus any tolls, parking or waiting beyond the included time, which are billed at cost and shown separately.
Why does Uber cost more after concerts and games?
Uber says surge pricing applies automatically when there are more riders in an area than available drivers, which is exactly what happens when a venue empties. A chauffeur booked in advance for a set pickup time at an agreed spot is not affected by that demand.
Where does a rideshare pick me up at the airport?
Each airport sets its own rideshare pickup zones, and they are often away from the arrivals hall. An Elly8.net chauffeur meets you inside arrivals with a name board, tracks your flight and applies complimentary waiting after a tracked landing. The chauffeur also helps with bags.
Do Uber and Lyft provide child seats?
Availability is limited and most families bring their own. Elly8.net provides child seats on request: add them when you book and they are fitted in the vehicle before pickup. A Business SUV gives families extra room for strollers and bags, and the chauffeur helps load everything.
Is a chauffeur worth it for a group?
Often, yes. Prices are per vehicle, so a Business SUV from LaGuardia to Midtown at US$190 or an Executive Sprinter at US$380 can carry a group and its luggage in one vehicle, met inside arrivals, with the cost shared between everyone.
What is the cancellation policy?
Free cancellation more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show. Refunds go to the original card. See the cancellation policy.
