An Uber from Philly to NYC is possible, and many people price one before they book a train. The app will quote the 96-mile (155 km) trip from Center City to Midtown at the moment you request it, and the number moves with demand, the time of day and the vehicle class you pick. A Philadelphia taxi will run its meter, a New York cab heading the other way negotiates, and a chauffeured car is priced as one fixed, all-in fare per vehicle before you travel.
Which one is cheapest depends almost entirely on how many people are going and how much luggage they have. For one person with a backpack, the train usually wins on cost. For a family or a group, one car for everyone changes the arithmetic. This guide sets out the real cost components of each option, with the published numbers where they exist and an honest description where they do not.
How much is an Uber from Philly to NYC?
Ride apps do not publish a Philadelphia to New York fare; the app quotes it at request time, and it changes with demand and vehicle class. Expect tolls and New York surcharges on top. For comparison, a Philadelphia taxi meter works out to about US$240 on distance alone, before waiting time, tolls and tip.
That meter figure is simple arithmetic from Philadelphia's published taxi rates, shown below. It is not a quote, and a cab driver may not want a one-way run to Manhattan, so ask before you set off. A chauffeured car from Elly8.net is quoted in the web booker as one fixed, all-in price for the whole vehicle, with tolls billed at cost.

The trip in numbers
From Center City Philadelphia, routed distances and clear-road times are:
| From Center City to | Distance | Clear-road drive |
|---|---|---|
| Midtown Manhattan | 96 mi (155 km) | about 2 h 7 min |
| Lower Manhattan | 95 mi (152 km) | about 2 h 8 min |
| Brooklyn (Prospect Heights) | 97 mi (156 km) | about 2 h 12 min |
| Newark Liberty Airport | 83 mi (134 km) | about 1 h 46 min |
| JFK Airport | 109 mi (175 km) | about 2 h 27 min |
On a weekday, two and a half to three hours to Manhattan is a realistic plan, and the approach to the Hudson crossing decides most of the difference. Every road option pays the same tolls: the New Jersey Turnpike charges by distance, and the Port Authority's Hudson crossings charge on the way into New York, as set out on its toll schedule.
Option 1: a ride app
How the price is formed. The app shows a price when you request, based on demand and the drivers around you. A long intercity trip at a busy hour can cost noticeably more than the same trip at mid-morning on a Tuesday. Premium black car categories are priced separately and higher.
What may be added. Check whether the quote covers the Turnpike and Hudson tolls. In New York, the Taxi and Limousine Commission lists a New York State Congestion Surcharge of US$2.75 for for-hire vehicles, the category app rides fall into, on trips that begin, end or pass through Manhattan south of 96th Street. A tip is optional in the app.
What you get. A car at the curb when a driver accepts, with no guarantee of vehicle size or price until you press the button. For a planned departure time with a fixed budget, that uncertainty is the main drawback. For a spontaneous trip with light bags, it can be convenient.
Option 2: a taxi
From Philadelphia. Philadelphia's medallion cabs charge US$2.70 for the first tenth of a mile and US$0.25 for each additional tenth, plus US$0.25 for each 37.6 seconds of waiting, according to the published rates on PHL's taxis and limousines page. On 96 miles that is about US$240 before waiting time in traffic, tolls and a tip, for the cab, not per person. A sedan cab also limits you to a few passengers and a trunk's worth of bags.
From New York back to Philadelphia. The New York yellow cab has a flat fare only between JFK and Manhattan. For destinations outside the city other than Westchester and Nassau, the TLC says the driver may choose whether to take the trip and the fare is a flat rate negotiated before the trip begins. In practice, that means a conversation at the curb with no published price.
Taxis are the right tool for getting to the station, not for the whole corridor.
Option 3: the train
Amtrak runs Acela, Northeast Regional, Keystone and Pennsylvanian trains between William H. Gray III 30th Street Station in Philadelphia and New York Penn Station. Amtrak prices tickets by train and date, so the fare depends on when you book and which service you take. For one traveller going station to station, the train is usually the cheapest and often the fastest option at peak hours, and we say so plainly.
What the ticket price does not include: getting to 30th Street, and getting from Penn Station to your hotel, office or apartment. With bags, children or an early meeting in Brooklyn, those two legs are where the time and money go. Multiply the ticket by every person in the group as well. See train station transfers if you want a car to meet the train at either end.
Option 4: a chauffeured car
How it is priced. Elly8.net quotes Philly to NYC in the web booker as one fixed, all-in price per vehicle for your exact pickup and drop-off. It includes the chauffeur, vehicle, taxes and standard gratuity. Turnpike and Hudson tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost. Traffic does not change the price, and neither does demand.
What the classes cost locally. For scale, these are the published hourly rates at each end of the route, with a 3-hour minimum:
| Vehicle | Seats and bags | Philadelphia, by the hour | New York, by the hour |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business Sedan | 3 and 2 | US$95 | US$105 |
| Business SUV | 6 and 6 | US$120 | US$135 |
| First Class SUV | 6 and 6 | US$145 | US$160 |
| First Class Sedan | 3 and 2 | US$155 | US$170 |
| Executive Sprinter | 12 and 12 | US$190 | US$210 |
Per person. Because the fare is per vehicle, divide the quote by the number of travellers. For one person, a chauffeur is the most expensive way to New York. For a family of five in a Business SUV, or a team of ten in an Executive Sprinter, the per-person cost can come close to everyone buying a train ticket and splitting taxis at both ends, and the trip is door to door.
What each option really costs, side by side
| Cost item | Ride app | Philadelphia taxi | Train | Elly8.net chauffeur |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Base price | set by the app at request | meter, about US$240 on distance | Amtrak fare per person | fixed per vehicle, quoted before you pay |
| Changes with demand | yes | no, but traffic adds wait time | by train and date | no |
| Turnpike and Hudson tolls | check the app quote | agree with the driver | none | billed at cost |
| New York surcharges | US$2.75 congestion surcharge below 96th Street | not applicable from Philadelphia | none | none added by us |
| Tip | optional in the app | customary, on top | none | standard gratuity included |
| Getting to and from stations | not needed | not needed | taxi or subway at each end | not needed |
| Luggage and group size | depends on class | a few passengers | what you can carry | up to 12 and 12 bags in a Sprinter |
Which should you choose?
One traveller, light bag, flexible time: the train. It is quicker at peak hours and far cheaper than any car.
Two travellers, staying near Penn Station: still the train, unless you are travelling very early or late.
A family with suitcases and children: a chauffeured Business SUV. Child seats are available on request, the bags go in once, and nobody carries a suitcase up subway stairs.
A group of six to twelve: an Executive Sprinter. One vehicle, one fixed price, one arrival time.
A business trip with meetings at both ends: a car, booked through a corporate account with monthly invoicing, or a day with a chauffeur that covers the drive and the Manhattan meetings. Our Philadelphia private driver guide explains how hourly days are planned.
A spontaneous trip with a small group: check the app, compare it with the train for everyone, and decide on the numbers in front of you.

Airports on the corridor
Many Philadelphia travellers are not going to Manhattan at all but to a New York airport. JFK is about 109 miles from Center City and Newark about 83. If you are flying into New York and heading home to Philadelphia, our JFK to Philadelphia car service guide covers the route, tolls and the meeting point. For flights from Philadelphia itself, Uber from Philadelphia airport vs a taxi vs a private car compares the options at PHL.

Frequently asked questions
Can you take an Uber from Philadelphia to New York?
Yes. Ride apps will quote the trip, with the price set at the moment you request and changing with demand and the vehicle class. Check whether tolls are included, and note that New York adds a US$2.75 congestion surcharge for for-hire vehicles on trips into Manhattan south of 96th Street.
How much would a taxi from Philly to NYC cost?
At Philadelphia's published meter rates, the 96 miles to Midtown work out to about US$240 on distance alone, before waiting time in traffic, tolls and a tip. That is an estimate from the tariff, not a quote, and you should agree the trip with the driver before leaving.
Will a New York taxi take me to Philadelphia?
Possibly. For destinations outside the city other than Westchester and Nassau, the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission says the driver can decline, and the fare must be a flat rate negotiated before the trip starts. A pre-booked car gives a guaranteed vehicle and a price fixed in advance.
Is the train cheaper than a car service from Philly to NYC?
For one or two people going station to station, yes, almost always. For families and groups, compare everyone's train tickets plus taxis at both ends with one fixed vehicle price; the car is per vehicle, so the per-person cost falls as the group grows.
What is included in a chauffeur's fixed price?
The chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes and standard gratuity, for the route you booked. New Jersey Turnpike and Hudson crossing tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost. The price does not change with traffic or demand.
What is the best way from Philly to NYC for a group of eight?
One Executive Sprinter, which seats up to 12 with 12 bags. It replaces several app rides or taxis, keeps the group together and arrives at one address at one time. The web booker quotes it as a fixed, all-in price for the vehicle, so divide by eight to compare with train tickets.
