Renting a car feels like the independent, economical choice, and for a week of driving through the Rockies or along the California coast it usually is. You pick up the keys, go where you like and pay one daily rate. For many trips, nothing beats it.
In a large city, the picture changes. The rental is only the first line of the bill. Then come fuel, insurance, airport and local taxes, tolls, congestion charges and the nightly hotel parking, plus the time spent driving, navigating and looking for a space. A chauffeur costs more per hour of use, but you only pay for the hours you need and you never park. This page sets out how to compare the two fairly, with verified city charges and published Elly8.net prices.
Is a chauffeur cheaper than renting a car?
For several days of long-distance driving, a rental car is almost always cheaper. For a city stay with a few trips, a chauffeur often costs about the same or less once parking, congestion charges, tolls and fuel are counted, and you get the time back. For day trips, compare a fixed chauffeured day package with a one-day rental plus extras.
The fair comparison is not "daily rental rate vs chauffeur price". It is "everything the rental costs for the trips you will actually make" against "the chauffeured trips that would cover the same journeys".
What a rental car really costs in a city
A rental quote shows the daily rate. The full cost of a city rental usually includes:
- Taxes and fees, which are often higher for pickups at the airport.
- Insurance or damage waivers, unless your card or policy covers you.
- Fuel, and the cost of returning the car with a full tank.
- Tolls, which in some cities are collected electronically and passed back with an admin fee.
- Parking, at the hotel every night and at every stop during the day.
- City charges. In New York, the MTA's congestion relief zone toll is US$9 for passenger vehicles paying with E-ZPass during the peak period. In London, the Congestion Charge is £18 a day if paid on the day or in advance, applying 7:00 to 18:00 Monday to Friday and 12:00 to 18:00 on weekends and bank holidays.
- Time. Collecting the car, learning it, navigating, finding parking and returning it, often at the start and end of a trip when time is short.
None of these is unusual, and together they can add a great deal to the headline daily rate in a big city.
What a chauffeur costs
Elly8.net prices are fixed and all-in. They include the chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes, the standard gratuity and, on airport routes, meet and greet. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost. You pay for transfers when you need them, an hourly chauffeur with a 3-hour minimum, or a fixed day package.
| City | Airport transfer from | By the hour from | Full-day chauffeur from | Signature day trip from |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| New York | US$145 (LaGuardia to Midtown) | US$105/hr | US$775 | US$970 (The Hamptons, 10 hours) |
| Los Angeles | US$170 (LAX to Beverly Hills) | US$105/hr | US$775 | US$775 (Malibu and the Pacific Coast Highway, 8 hours) |
| Miami | US$180 (MIA to Miami Beach) | US$100/hr | US$740 | US$920 (Florida Keys to Islamorada, 10 hours) |
| Las Vegas | US$125 (LAS to the Strip) | US$95/hr | US$700 | US$525 (Hoover Dam and Lake Mead, 6 hours) |
| Toronto | US$95 (Billy Bishop to downtown) | US$110/hr | US$810 | US$1,015 (Niagara Falls, 10 hours) |
| London | US$155 (London City to Mayfair) | US$105/hr | US$775 | US$970 (Windsor Castle and the Cotswolds, 10 hours) |
| Paris | US$135 (Orly to the 8th arrondissement) | US$90/hr | US$665 | US$830 (Champagne houses in Reims and Epernay, 10 hours) |
All prices are for a Business Sedan; SUVs, First Class cars and the Executive Sprinter are listed on each city page.
A worked example: four days in Manhattan
Say you fly into JFK on Monday, have meetings in Midtown and the Financial District on Tuesday and Wednesday, and fly out on Thursday.
With a rental: four days of rental, taxes and fees, fuel, the congestion relief zone toll each weekday you drive into the zone in peak hours, tolls on the way in and out, and hotel parking every night, plus parking at each meeting. On the days you walk or take the subway, you still pay for the car and the garage.
With Elly8.net: a JFK car service into Midtown at US$210, an hourly chauffeur for the heaviest meeting day at US$105 an hour (3-hour minimum), walking or the subway for the rest, and a transfer back to JFK at US$210. No parking, no tolls on your card beyond those billed at cost on your rides, no time behind the wheel.
For most business travellers to Manhattan, the chauffeur route costs less and is far less work.
A worked example: a week on the California coast
Now take a week driving from Los Angeles up the Pacific Coast Highway to Santa Barbara and beyond, with a few nights in different towns. Here the rental wins clearly. You drive most days, parking is easier outside the big cities and a chauffeur for seven full days would cost far more.
The sensible mix is a chauffeured LAX to Beverly Hills transfer from US$170 on arrival, when you are tired and the traffic is heavy, and the rental collected the next morning when you are ready to drive.
Driving abroad
For North American travellers in Europe, the comparison tilts further. In the UK you drive on the left. City centres have narrow streets, unfamiliar signs and charges for driving in central zones, such as London's £18 Congestion Charge. Parking is scarce and expensive. Before renting, check whether you need an International Driving Permit for the country you are visiting and what your card's rental insurance covers abroad.
Many travellers book a chauffeur for the arrival, such as Heathrow to Mayfair from US$195 or Charles de Gaulle to the 8th arrondissement from US$170, and for one or two day trips, and rent a car only for the countryside part of the trip.
Questions to ask before renting in a city
- Where will the car sleep? Check your hotel's overnight parking charge before you book the rental.
- Will you drive into a charging zone? Central London and the Manhattan congestion relief zone both charge, and other cities have their own rules.
- How will you pay tolls? Many rental companies pass electronic tolls back to you, sometimes with an admin fee.
- What does your insurance cover? Check your card benefits and policy, especially abroad.
- How many days will you really drive? If the honest answer is one or two, price those days with a chauffeur and leave the rest to walking, transit and taxis.
Trains as the third option
Sometimes the right answer is neither a rental nor a chauffeur. From Heathrow, Heathrow Express reaches Paddington in 15 minutes, every 15 minutes. From Toronto Pearson, UP Express reaches Union Station in about 28 minutes for a C$12.35 adult standard fare. If you travel light and stay near the station, take the train, and keep the chauffeur for the trips where it makes the difference.

When renting a car is the better choice
- Road trips over several days with long daily distances.
- Rural and mountain areas where you will drive most of the day and park easily.
- Long stays where you need a car daily for weeks.
- Tight budgets, where the lowest total cost matters most.
When a chauffeur is the better choice
- City stays in New York, Chicago, London, Paris or Toronto, where parking and charges eat the savings.
- Business trips, where your time is worth more than the difference. See corporate car service.
- Arrivals after long flights, when nobody should be learning a new car on an unfamiliar motorway.
- Wine country days. On a wine tour, the chauffeur drives between tastings, so nobody in your group has to. Our chauffeurs follow local rules on alcohol in vehicles, which differ by city.
- Event nights, when parking near the venue is scarce. See event transportation.
- Groups, where one Sprinter van with driver replaces two rental cars and two designated drivers.
- Day trips. A fixed-price signature day trip, such as Niagara Falls from Toronto or Hoover Dam from Las Vegas, often compares well with a one-day rental once fuel, parking and time are counted.
City to city without a rental
For trips between nearby cities, our city to city car service replaces a one-way rental and its drop-off fee. The web booker quotes a fixed price for any pair of addresses before you confirm.
Business travel: whose time is it?
For a business traveller, the hidden cost of a rental is the time spent driving rather than working. An hour on an urban motorway is an hour without calls, email or preparation, and the stress of finding parking before a meeting is real. With a chauffeur, the back seat becomes a quiet office, the car is waiting outside when the meeting ends, and the bags stay in the trunk between appointments. Companies that put travel on a corporate account also replace fuel, parking and toll receipts with one monthly invoice.
Who drives
Toronto and the GTA run on the Elly8 fleet and chauffeurs. In every other city, rides are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network, with Elly8.net taking the booking, fixing the price and running the 24/7 desk. Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer, seven for Rolls-Royce, Maybach and Bentley.

Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to rent a car or hire a chauffeur?
For multi-day road trips, renting is cheaper. For city stays, the gap narrows once you add parking, congestion charges, tolls, fuel and fees. A chauffeur is priced per trip, hour or day, for example US$105 an hour in New York with a 3-hour minimum, and you never park.
How much does a chauffeur cost for a full day?
Elly8.net full-day chauffeur packages start at US$665 in Paris, US$700 in Las Vegas, US$740 in Miami, US$775 in New York, Los Angeles and London, and US$810 in Toronto, in a Business Sedan. SUVs, First Class cars and the Executive Sprinter cost more and are listed on each city page.
Are tolls and parking extra with a chauffeur?
Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost and shown separately on your receipt. You never search for parking yourself; the chauffeur drops you at the door and handles the car. There is no fuel surcharge and no separate tip to calculate.
What does it cost to drive into central London or Manhattan?
London's Congestion Charge is £18 a day if paid on the day or in advance, according to Transport for London. New York's congestion relief zone toll is US$9 for E-ZPass passenger vehicles in the peak period, according to the MTA. Both apply to rental cars.
Can you combine a chauffeur and a rental?
Yes, and many travellers do. Book a chauffeured airport transfer for arrival and departure, and rent a car only for the days you will drive out of the city. It avoids airport rental counters after a long flight and city parking during your stay.
What is the cancellation policy?
Free cancellation more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show. Refunds go to the original card. See the cancellation policy.
