The arithmetic of a wine country day is simple: four tastings, two or three hours of country roads, a long lunch, and nobody in the group should be driving. A private wine tour with a chauffeur solves the last part and makes the rest easier. The chauffeur drives between estates, waits while you taste, carries the cases you buy and takes everyone back to the hotel. Elly8.net offers chauffeured wine country days from our cities in the USA, Canada and Europe, many of them as fixed-price day trip packages on the city price list.
Every price is per vehicle and all-in: chauffeur, vehicle, taxes and standard gratuity. Tasting fees, lunch and the wine you buy are your own. The car is the same price whether one passenger tastes or all twelve.
How much is a private wine tour with a driver?

A 12-seat Executive Sprinter runs US$1,255 to US$1,840.

In Europe the Business SUV is the Mercedes-Benz V-Class, seating six. For a group of twelve, the Executive Sprinter in Napa works out at about US$123 each for eight hours, gratuity included. Tolls and parking are billed at cost; time beyond the package hours is billed at the hourly rate.
The designated driver logic
A wine country day with friends usually means someone volunteers to drive and spends the day tasting nothing. Divide a chauffeured car by the group and the cost of giving that person the day off is often modest: a Business SUV for six in Napa is US$920 for eight hours, about US$153 each, and everyone tastes.
There is also the question nobody likes to ask: who is fit to drive at 5 p.m. after four tastings? With a chauffeur the answer does not matter. The car is professionally driven on unfamiliar, often unlit country roads, and the day ends at the hotel door.
Two rules keep it simple:
- Taste at the winery, not in the car. Laws on alcohol in vehicles differ by state, province and country, and the chauffeur follows local rules. Open bottles stay at the estate or go home sealed.
- Bring water and eat lunch. A good day plans lunch in the middle, not at the end. The chauffeur can suggest a stop between tastings.
Tasting appointments come first
The most common mistake on a wine day is booking the car and then discovering the wineries are full. In many regions, tastings are by appointment. Visit Napa Valley, the valley's tourism organisation, says that tastings are conducted by appointment only, that some wineries have permits limiting daily guests, and that it is best to plan appointments a few weeks ahead. It also counts more than 400 Napa Valley wineries, so choosing matters as much as booking.
The order that works:
- Choose three or four estates in the same part of the region. Crossing a valley twice wastes an hour.
- Book the tastings, leaving about 90 minutes per estate including the drive between them, and a lunch slot in the middle.
- Book the car around them, using the day trip package or by the hour, and send us the list with times and addresses.
- Tell us the group size each winery has confirmed; some estates cap groups, which matters if you are twelve in a Sprinter.
The regions, one by one
Napa and Sonoma. Napa is about 47 miles (75 km) from San Francisco by road, about an hour on a clear road and often longer on a Friday. Stay in the valley and book the eight-hour Napa and Sonoma day from US$740, or come up from the city on the ten-hour Napa Valley day trip from US$920. Napa Valley airport transfers from SFO (about 59 mi / 94 km) are fixed from US$390. See Napa Valley car service and San Francisco car service.
Temecula, from San Diego. About 65 miles (105 km) north of downtown San Diego, around 80 minutes on a clear road. The Temecula Valley Winegrowers Association lists the member wineries. The eight-hour day is from US$740. See San Diego car service.
Niagara-on-the-Lake. The Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake association covers the estates between the Niagara River and the lake, a short drive from the Falls. The eight-hour day from Niagara Falls is from US$810. From downtown Toronto, Niagara-on-the-Lake is about 127 km (79 mi), roughly 1 hour 40 minutes on a clear road; Toronto and the GTA run on the Elly8 fleet and chauffeurs, and the ten-hour Toronto to Niagara Falls day trip, from US$1,015, can include winery stops. See Niagara Falls and Toronto.
The Okanagan, from Kelowna. Estates around Okanagan Lake; Tourism Kelowna, the official visitor site, lists the wineries and guided wine touring. Kelowna airport (YLW) is about 10 miles (16 km) from downtown, fixed from US$110. The eight-hour Okanagan day is from US$810. See Kelowna car service.
Champagne, from Paris. Reims is about 147 km (92 mi) from the 8th arrondissement, under two hours on a clear road, with Epernay a similar distance. The ten-hour day from US$830 gives time for two or three houses and lunch. Check each house's own site for visits and reservations, and the Comite Champagne for the region. See Paris chauffeur service.
Chianti, from Florence. Greve in Chianti is about 29 km (18 mi) from Florence, around half an hour on a clear road, and the hill roads beyond are narrow and winding, which makes a chauffeur more valuable than the distance suggests. The Chianti Classico consortium represents the producers. The eight-hour day is from US$630. See Florence chauffeur service.
The Douro, from Porto. Pinhao, in the heart of the valley, is about 129 km (80 mi) from Porto, around 1 hour 40 minutes on a clear road. The ten-hour Douro Valley day is from US$785. The Douro and Port Wine Institute is the regional authority. See Porto chauffeur service.
And more. Woodinville from Seattle, the Texas Hill Country from Austin, the Santa Ynez Valley from Santa Barbara, the Prosecco hills from Venice and the Kentucky Bourbon Trail from Louisville are all signature day trips on their city price lists.
Which vehicle for a wine day
| Group | Vehicle | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | First Class Sedan | quiet, comfortable, room for a case or two |
| 3 to 6 | Business or First Class SUV | the most popular wine-day car; trunk space for purchases |
| 7 to 12 | Executive Sprinter | one vehicle, one conversation, room for cases |
| Celebrations | stretch limousine or party bus | priced in the web booker; check that estates accept the vehicle and group |
Wine you buy goes in the back. A Sprinter with twelve passengers still has room for purchases, but tell us if the group plans to buy by the case. See the fleet page and, for larger groups, group transportation. For a hen or stag weekend that includes a winery, read party bus rental and check each estate's group policy first.
Wine tour vs a shared tour bus, a taxi or driving yourself
Shared winery tours are cheaper per person and sociable, with a set route and set estates. They suit a couple who are happy with the operator's choice of wineries.
Taxis and rideshare can be scarce in wine country, and waiting for one in a winery car park at 5 p.m. is a common way to end a good day badly.
Driving yourself means one person does not taste, and country roads at dusk after a long day are not the place to find out.
A private chauffeured day wins when you choose the estates, when the group is three or more and the price is shared, and when everyone wants to taste.
How booking works
- Book your tastings, then choose the day trip package on the city price list or enter your estates by the hour in the web booker.
- Choose the vehicle for the group and the purchases.
- Reserve now and pay by card. The confirmation arrives by email; send the tasting schedule to the desk, and the chauffeur's details follow before the day.
Outside Toronto and the GTA, rides are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Travel agents and hotels book wine days for guests through travel-agent and hotel accounts; companies running client days use corporate accounts. Cancellation: more than 72 hours before pickup, free; 72 hours or less, 10%; 48 hours or less, 50%; 24 hours or less, or a no-show, 100%. Refunds go to the original card.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a private Napa wine tour with a driver?
The eight-hour Napa and Sonoma wineries day is US$740 in a business sedan, US$920 in a business SUV, US$1,180 in a First Class Sedan and US$1,475 in a 12-seat Executive Sprinter, per vehicle and all-in. From San Francisco, the ten-hour Napa Valley day trip is from US$920. Tasting fees are your own.
Do we need to book the winery tastings ourselves?
Yes, book the tastings first and then the car around them. In Napa, Visit Napa Valley says tastings are by appointment only and recommends planning a few weeks ahead. Send the desk your schedule with addresses and times, and the chauffeur plans the route between estates.
How many wineries can we visit in a day?
Three or four is a comfortable day, with about 90 minutes per estate including the drive and a lunch stop in the middle. Choose estates in the same part of the region; crossing back and forth across a valley costs an hour you could spend tasting.
Can we drink wine in the car?
No. Taste at the winery. Laws on alcohol in vehicles differ by state, province and country, and the chauffeur follows local rules. Bottles you buy travel sealed in the back of the vehicle, and the chauffeur can suggest a lunch or water stop between tastings.
Is the tip included on a wine tour?
Yes. Every Elly8.net price includes the chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes and a standard gratuity. Tolls and parking are billed at cost, and time beyond the package hours is billed at the hourly rate. Tasting fees, lunch and wine purchases are not included.
Which vehicle is best for a group of eight?
An Executive Sprinter, which seats up to 12 and keeps the whole group together with room for purchases. Check that each winery accepts a group of your size; some estates cap group bookings. Two Business SUVs are an alternative if the group wants to split up during the day.
Can you pick us up from San Francisco for Napa?
Yes. The ten-hour Napa Valley wine country day trip from San Francisco is fixed from US$920 in a business sedan and US$1,840 in an Executive Sprinter, door to door from your hotel. Napa is about 47 miles (75 km) from San Francisco by road.
Do you offer wine tours in Europe?
Yes: Champagne from Paris, Chianti from Florence, the Douro Valley from Porto and the Prosecco hills from Venice are fixed day trips on those city price lists. In Europe the SUV class is the Mercedes-Benz V-Class, seating six with luggage or purchases.
