A Kingston taxi is metered under a tariff the City of Kingston publishes: CA$4.50 for the first 135 metres, then CA$0.30 for every further 135 metres, with small extras for additional passengers, the trunk and waiting time. In round numbers that is a little over CA$2 a kilometre once you are moving, so a 5 km trip across town comes to about CA$16 in distance charges, and the 11 km from the airport to downtown about CA$29. Rideshare fares are set by the app and change with demand; Kingston Transit is CA$3.50 in coins.
For a short trip in town, a taxi, a rideshare or the bus is usually the right answer, and this guide says so. A pre-booked chauffeur is a different product: one fixed price per vehicle, agreed in advance, from US$95 in a business sedan for the airport run. It wins in specific situations, which we list below.
How much is a taxi in Kingston?
Kingston taxis charge CA$4.50 for the first 135 metres, including a CA$0.25 access fee, then CA$0.30 per 135 metres, CA$0.50 per extra adult passenger, CA$0.50 for the trunk and CA$0.30 per 25 seconds of waiting. A 5 km ride is about CA$16 in distance charges before extras; trips ending well outside the city are flat-rated in advance.
Those numbers are from Schedule A10 of the City's Passenger Transportation Services By-Law, By-law 2026-86, passed in August 2026. From 1 October 2026 the City took over taxi licensing and enforcement from the Kingston Area Taxi Commission, as its passenger transportation services page explains. The tariff card must be displayed in every cab.

The tariff, line by line
A few details in the by-law matter more to passengers than the headline rate.
- The meter must be on. The tariff note is blunt: if the taxi meter is not on, the ride is free.
- Waiting is time-based. CA$0.30 for each 25 seconds while under engagement, which is about CA$0.72 a minute. In slow traffic or at a stop while someone runs inside, the meter keeps moving.
- Extra passengers. CA$0.50 for each passenger beyond the first. The surcharge does not apply to children aged 12 and under travelling with an adult, or to a personal care attendant.
- Bags. CA$0.50 for use of the trunk; briefcases and similar parcels loaded by the passenger are free. Large items such as bicycles or skis are agreed with the driver before the trip, at no less than CA$2.
- Vans. A specific request for a van carries a CA$2.50 charge, with no additional-passenger fees.
- Long trips. For trips that start in the city and end more than 5 km beyond the city limits, the driver pre-arranges a flat fare before the trip.
- Cleaning. An extensive cleaning charge of CA$80.50 may apply after an unusual sanitary accident, and it must appear on the meter receipt.
- Cancellation. CA$3.00 if the driver reaches the pickup before the trip is cancelled through the dispatcher.
The by-law also requires a camera system, a roof sign, a receipt with HST shown, and commercial insurance. Kingston taxis are a regulated, accountable service, and that is worth knowing before comparing them with anything else.
What common trips cost by meter
These are arithmetic from the published tariff, distance charges only. Waiting time in traffic, extra passengers and the trunk come on top, and the driver's route and the traffic move the result.
| Kingston trip | Approximate distance | Distance charges by the tariff | What is extra |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short hop across downtown | 3 km | about CA$11 | waiting at lights, extra passengers |
| Across town, for example campus to a west-end hotel | 5 km | about CA$16 | waiting, trunk |
| A longer city trip | 8 km | about CA$22 | waiting, trunk |
| YGK airport to downtown | 11 km | about CA$29 | waiting, passengers, trunk |
| Beyond 5 km past the city limits | varies | flat fare agreed before the trip | agree it first |
The distances are illustrative; your own trip depends on the exact addresses. Tips are customary on top of the meter.
Rideshare in Kingston: how it works and what it costs
Rideshare is legal and licensed in Kingston. The airport's local transportation page confirms that Uber is available in the city, and the City regulates app-based services under its separate Transportation Network Company By-law.
Two rules from that by-law are worth knowing. The app must show you an estimate of the total cost of the trip, including any surcharges, before you accept. And drivers are prohibited from accepting street hails or picking up at taxi stands, so a rideshare is always booked through the app.
What the by-law does not do is fix the price. Rideshare fares are dynamic: they rise when demand outruns the drivers nearby, which in Kingston tends to mean the end of a Frontenacs game at Slush Puppie Place, Queen's move-in and homecoming weekends, bar closing time downtown and the first snowstorm of the winter. On a quiet weekday afternoon a rideshare is often quick and cheap. On those nights the estimate can climb and the wait can grow, and you see both before you commit.
The bus, for the right trip
Kingston Transit charges CA$3.50 a ride in coins, with no change given and a 90-minute transfer on request. A day pass is CA$10, and children and youth 14 and under ride free, which makes the bus excellent value for a family exploring downtown. Visit Kingston notes that Route 16 links the VIA Rail station at 1800 John Counter Boulevard with downtown.
The bus is less useful in two places: the airport, where YGK says Kingston Transit does not currently stop (the nearest stop is at Days Road and Front Road), and late at night, when frequencies fall.
Wait times: what actually changes them
No one publishes Kingston taxi or rideshare wait times, so be wary of anyone who quotes a number. What the desk sees, booking cars here every day, is that waits depend on four things:
- Time of day. Early mornings and late nights have fewer cars on the road.
- Events. A sold-out show or game at Slush Puppie Place puts hundreds of people on the curb at once. The arena's calendar this winter includes a Grand Slam of Curling draw on 15 December 2026 and the Harlem Globetrotters on 2 February 2027.
- Weather. Snow and freezing rain lengthen every trip, so each car completes fewer of them.
- Where you are. The station, the airport and the edges of the city are further from where cars cluster downtown.
A pre-booked car takes the wait out of the equation. The vehicle is assigned before the day, the chauffeur arrives at the booked time, and on airport pickups there is complimentary waiting after a tracked arrival.
Three real situations, worked through
A solo consultant, VIA train at 2 p.m., hotel downtown. Take the taxi from the queue at the station or a rideshare. The trip is short, the bag is small and the price is a few dollars of meter. Booking a chauffeur here would be paying for certainty you do not need.
A family of five on the Landline coach into YGK at night. Three adults, two children, five suitcases. One taxi will not take it, two taxis means two meters and a wait for the second car, and child seats are not guaranteed. A Business SUV at US$125, booked ahead with seats fitted, is the cleaner answer, and the price is known before the coach leaves Pearson.
A visiting team with a day of meetings. Four people, three sites, a lunch and an evening flight. Calling a cab or an app ride four times a day adds waits at each stop and four receipts per person. An hourly booking from US$110 an hour, or the corporate roadshow day from US$990 in a sedan, keeps one car and one chauffeur with the group and produces one invoice.

When the taxi, rideshare or bus is the smarter call
- One person, a carry-on, a short trip. A taxi or rideshare across town costs a fraction of a booked car.
- The VIA station to downtown at a normal hour. Taxis wait at the station, and the bus runs to downtown.
- Spontaneous plans. If you do not know when you will leave dinner, an on-demand ride fits better than a booking.
- A family day downtown. With children riding free on Kingston Transit, the bus is hard to beat for sightseeing in the core.
When a pre-booked car wins
- Late or uncertain arrivals. The car is assigned in advance, and an airport pickup is tracked.
- Groups and luggage. A Business SUV seats six with six bags; an Executive Sprinter seats 12 with 12 bags, from US$250 from YGK. Splitting a group across two or three cabs costs time at both ends.
- Child seats. Seats are fitted before pickup on request, rather than hoping a cab has one.
- Tight schedules. A defence-sector visit, a thesis examination at Queen's or a hospital appointment does not leave room for a wait at the curb. An hourly chauffeur keeps the car on hand between stops.
- Long trips out of town. A taxi pre-arranges a flat fare beyond the city limits; we publish ours on the Kingston fares panel. Pearson to downtown Kingston is US$565 in a Business Sedan and US$1,470 in an Executive Sprinter, and the six-hour Thousand Islands day trip starts at US$610.
- Corporate billing. A corporate account puts every ride on one monthly invoice with traveller names and cost centres; see corporate car service.

Frequently asked questions
What is the taxi rate in Kingston, Ontario?
Under the City's tariff, a Kingston taxi charges CA$4.50 for the first 135 metres, including a CA$0.25 access fee, and CA$0.30 for each further 135 metres. Extra adult passengers are CA$0.50 each, the trunk CA$0.50, and waiting CA$0.30 for every 25 seconds. The tariff card must be displayed in the cab.
Is Uber available in Kingston?
Yes. YGK confirms Uber operates in Kingston, and the City licenses app-based services under its Transportation Network Company By-law. The app must show an estimated total, including surcharges, before you accept, and drivers cannot take street hails or pick up at taxi stands.
How much is a taxi from Kingston airport to downtown?
The tariff arithmetic for the roughly 11 km trip is about CA$29 in distance charges, before waiting time, extra passengers, the trunk and a tip. A pre-booked Elly8.net Business Sedan is US$95, fixed and all-in, with meet and greet and complimentary waiting after a tracked arrival.
Does Kingston Transit go to the airport?
Not at present. YGK says the closest stop is an Express stop at Days Road and Front Road, served by the 502 Express and Route 6. The adult fare is CA$3.50 in coins, and children 14 and under ride free, but the walk with luggage makes it practical only for light travellers.
When is a car service worth it instead of a taxi?
When the arrival is late or uncertain, when three or more people share the trip, when children need seats, when there is a lot of luggage, when a meeting is waiting at the other end, or when the trip leaves the city. For one person going a short way at a normal hour, a taxi or rideshare is the better value.
Can a Kingston taxi take me to Toronto?
Kingston's tariff says trips ending more than 5 km beyond the city limits are flat-rated by the driver before the trip, so ask for the fare first. Elly8.net publishes its fare: downtown Kingston to Pearson is US$565 in a Business Sedan, fixed and all-in, the same price as the trip from Pearson.
