A San Juan taxi from Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (SJU) runs on fixed zone rates rather than the meter for the main tourist areas: US$12 to Isla Verde, US$17 to Condado, Ocean Park, Miramar and Santurce, and US$21 to Old San Juan and the cruise piers, per trip, before the extras. Those base prices come from the airport's published taxi rate sheet, and they are good value for a couple with a suitcase each.
A pre-booked car on Elly8.net costs more on that short run, from US$120 in a business sedan to Condado, but it is a different product: a chauffeur waiting inside arrivals, a vehicle class you choose, gratuity already included and a total fixed before you fly. This guide sets out the taxi rules first, then the trips where each option is the sensible one, so you can decide on the facts rather than the sales pitch.
How much is a taxi in San Juan?
From SJU, airport taxis charge fixed base fares by zone: US$12 to Isla Verde, US$17 to Condado and Santurce, US$21 to Old San Juan and the piers. Add US$3 airport fee, US$1 per additional bag, US$1 late at night and tolls and tip. Trips outside the tourist zones run on the meter.
The source for those numbers is the airport's taxi rate sheet, linked from the SJU ground transportation page. It states that rates were approved by the island's public service regulator, that the price is per trip and not per person, and that the metered rate applies between and beyond the tourist zones. It also notes that tolls and tips are not included and that you pay the driver.
The extras are small but they add up on a family arrival:
- US$1 for each additional piece of luggage
- US$2 for a sixth or seventh passenger
- US$1 late-night charge between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
- US$3 airport fee
- No charge for a wheelchair or other mobility equipment
So two adults with two large bags landing at 11 p.m. and riding to a Condado hotel would expect US$17 plus the airport fee, the late-night charge, any extra-bag charge and a tip: a little over US$20 before the tip. That is the benchmark to beat.

The full airport taxi sheet, by destination
The same sheet lists fixed fares from SJU to towns across the island, which is useful if you are staying outside the metro area or heading to a resort. A selection, all base prices per trip:
| From SJU to | Airport taxi base fare | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Isla Verde (zone 2) | US$12 | Next to the airport, the shortest ride |
| Condado, Ocean Park, Miramar, Santurce (zone 3) | US$17 | Most hotels on Ashford Avenue |
| Old San Juan and the piers (zone 4) | US$21 | Cruise passengers, the walled city |
| Convention Center district (zone 5) | US$17 | Hotels by the Convention Center |
| Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot | US$16 | Straight from the plane to a show |
| The Mall of San Juan | US$15 | Shopping on the way in |
| Plaza Las Americas | US$20 | Hato Rey shopping centre |
| Dorado | US$62 | West-coast resort area |
| Rio Grande | US$65 | Toward El Yunque |
| Fajardo or Ceiba | US$82 each | East coast |
| Ponce | US$127 | South coast |
| Rincon | US$157 | West-coast surf towns |
Plus the same extras, tolls and tip. For San Juan proper, Carolina, Rio Piedras and Pinones, the sheet says "metered", so a ride to a residential address or a business in Hato Rey is priced on the meter rather than by zone.
Where the San Juan taxi ranks are
At the airport, the main taxi rank is on the arrivals level of Terminal A, serving passengers leaving the Terminal A baggage area, and a second rank on the arrivals level of Terminal B serves passengers from Terminals B and C. Taxi dispatchers there handle the queue, and the airport describes the taxis as regulated with approved rates.
In the city, taxis gather where visitors gather: hotel driveways in Condado and Isla Verde, the plazas of Old San Juan and the pier area on cruise days. Hotels will call one for you. Because the sheet's fixed fares are airport fares, a ride between, say, Condado and Old San Juan is a separate trip; confirm the price with the driver before you set off, as you would in any city.
Cruise days change the picture in Old San Juan. Several ships can share the piers, and the streets near them fill with coaches, taxis and passengers at the same hour. The rank works, but expect a queue if you disembark with the main wave. Our planning notes for pier days are on the cruise port transfers page.
Uber in San Juan and the rules at SJU
The airport states that Uber is currently the only ride-sharing company operating in Puerto Rico. Pickups at SJU are at designated areas: Terminal A, and Terminals B and C at columns 16 to 19. Uber fares are not published in advance and change with demand and time of day, so we will not quote one here; the app shows the price before you accept.
In practice, rideshare is a reasonable choice in the metro area for one or two people with light bags. The trade-offs are the usual ones: the price can rise when demand is high, such as when several flights land together or a concert lets out, and at the airport you walk to the pickup columns and wait for the match. Our general comparison is in chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft, and the step up to premium app rides is covered in Uber Black vs a pre-booked chauffeur.
The bus is cheap, if you travel light
Public buses leave from the departures level, and the airport lists route D53 to Condado's Ashford Avenue and the Convention Center, and T5 and D53 to Isla Verde and Old San Juan. For one traveller with a carry-on in the daytime, that is the cheapest way into town by a wide margin. With a large suitcase, children or a late flight, most visitors switch to a taxi.
Taxi vs Uber vs Elly8.net, trip by trip
Here is where we would point a friend, using the published taxi fares and our fixed San Juan prices. Elly8.net fares are per vehicle and include the chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and airport meet and greet; tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost.
| Trip | Airport taxi | Uber | Elly8.net | Our honest pick |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Couple, two bags, SJU to Condado, afternoon | US$17 base plus extras and tip | Varies | from US$120 business sedan | The taxi |
| Family of five, car seats, late flight to Condado | US$17 base plus extras; seats not supplied | Varies; seats not guaranteed | from US$160 business SUV, child seats on request | Pre-booked SUV |
| Ten wedding guests with luggage to Old San Juan | Two taxis, each US$21 base plus extras | Two or three cars | from US$315 Executive Sprinter, one vehicle | Pre-booked Sprinter |
| Business traveller, SJU to a meeting in Hato Rey | Metered | Varies | Quote in the web booker | Either; chauffeur if the receipt matters |
| Day at El Yunque, back the same day | US$65 one way to Rio Grande, then find a ride back | Uncertain pickup in the forest area | from US$525 for six hours, car waits | Pre-booked day |
| Dorado resort, two people | US$62 base plus extras | Varies | Quote in the web booker | Compare both |
San Juan is unusual in publishing its airport taxi fares; in cities where the taxi runs on the meter, such as Anchorage, the comparison works differently, as our Anchorage taxi or rideshare guide shows.
The pattern is clear. For a short ride with light luggage and no deadline, the taxi is the better buy, and we say so. The pre-booked car pays its way when the arithmetic changes: a group that would need two or three taxis, a family that needs child seats fitted before pickup, a late arrival when you want the car waiting rather than a queue, or a day trip where the vehicle must still be there when you come back.
The group arithmetic
Because both the taxi and our price are per vehicle, groups are where the comparison moves. The taxi sheet adds a charge for a sixth or seventh passenger, which tells you the largest taxis carry seven. A group of ten to twelve with suitcases needs at least two taxis and, realistically, room for bags too.
One Executive Sprinter seats up to 12 with room for 12 bags. From SJU to Condado it costs US$315 for the vehicle, fixed and all-in. Divided across ten guests, that is about US$32 each; we show the division only as arithmetic for comparison, since the price is for the vehicle. Two taxis at the Old San Juan zone rate, with the airport fee and bag charges, come to less in fares, but the group arrives in two places at two times, and someone settles two tips. Wedding planners and incentive organisers usually choose the single vehicle for that reason. See group transportation for how we run multi-flight arrivals.
When the pre-booked car wins in San Juan
Late and delayed flights. Many mainland flights land in the evening. We track the flight number, and you get complimentary waiting after a tracked landing, so a delay does not cost you a second booking. The chauffeur meets you inside the arrivals area with a name board; you do not need to find a rank. The step-by-step is on our airport transfers page.
Child seats. Taxis do not bring them. Add each child's age and weight when you book and the seats are fitted before pickup.
The El Yunque day. A taxi will take you out to Rio Grande for the published US$65, but you then need a way back from a forest with limited parking and managed visitor capacity. The US Forest Service posts current access rules and alerts, including a caution about unauthorised transport. Our six-hour El Yunque rainforest day keeps the same chauffeur and vehicle with you, from US$525 in a business sedan, US$665 in a business SUV and US$1,050 in an Executive Sprinter.
A known total. For expense reports, group budgets and corporate travel, a fixed fare that already includes the gratuity is easier to approve than a meter plus extras plus tip. Companies booking often can open a corporate account with monthly invoicing.
Nights out. The Coliseo, the restaurants of Old San Juan and Condado and the late finish are where waiting for a ride gets tiresome. The five-hour evening out and event night package, from US$475 in a business sedan, keeps the car waiting for the ride home. If you are planning for a bigger group, our San Juan party bus guide covers vehicles for eight to sixteen.
Fair tips for a San Juan taxi ride
- At SJU, use the official ranks on the arrivals level, and check that the fare matches the zone on the posted sheet.
- Ask the driver to confirm metered versus zone pricing before you leave for any address outside the tourist zones.
- Have small notes for tolls and tip, which are not included in the taxi fare.
- For a late arrival, remember the late-night charge applies from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
- If you are heading to the east coast to connect with a boat, give yourself a buffer: Fajardo and Ceiba are US$82 each on the sheet and the drive is long enough that a slow start matters. On our routed estimate, Condado to Fajardo is about 35 miles (56 km), roughly 52 minutes on a clear road.
How to book a fixed San Juan car instead
- Enter your pickup and drop-off; for an SJU arrival, add your flight number so the desk can track it.
- Choose the vehicle by passengers and bags: business sedan for up to 3, business SUV for up to 6, Executive Sprinter for up to 12. The fleet page has the details.
- Press Reserve now on a priced route or use the web booker for any other address on the island. Confirmation arrives by email.
The SJU to Condado fare is the same fixed price in either direction, so the ride back to the airport is US$120 in a business sedan or US$315 in a Sprinter, and a round trip booked together starts at US$230. Full prices are on the San Juan car service page, and travellers connecting through Florida can compare our Miami and Fort Lauderdale fares.
Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show, refunded to the original card.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a taxi from San Juan airport to Condado?
The airport's published sheet lists a fixed base fare of US$17 per trip to Condado, Ocean Park, Miramar and Santurce. Add a US$3 airport fee, US$1 for each additional bag, US$1 between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., tolls and a tip. It is a fixed zone fare, not a per-person price.
Is there Uber in San Juan, Puerto Rico?
Yes. The airport says Uber is currently the only rideshare company operating in Puerto Rico, with pickup areas at Terminal A and at Terminals B and C, columns 16 to 19. Prices are not published in advance and vary with demand, so check the app before you accept.
Are San Juan taxis metered?
Within the tourist zones from the airport, taxis use fixed zone rates. The airport's sheet says the metered rate applies between and beyond those zones, and it lists San Juan, Carolina and Rio Piedras addresses as metered. Confirm the pricing with the driver before you set off.
Where are the taxi ranks at SJU?
On the arrivals level. The main rank is at Terminal A for passengers leaving the Terminal A baggage area, and a second rank at Terminal B serves passengers from Terminals B and C. A pre-booked Elly8.net chauffeur meets you inside arrivals with a name board instead.
Is a pre-booked car worth it for a short San Juan trip?
For a couple with light bags in the daytime, usually not; the taxi is cheaper. A fixed car from US$120 makes sense for late flights, families needing child seats, groups that would need several taxis, business travel that needs a clean receipt, and day trips such as El Yunque.
How much is a taxi from San Juan airport to Ceiba?
The airport's rate sheet lists US$82 base per trip to Ceiba, the same as Fajardo, plus the airport fee, bag charges, tolls and tip. For a fixed all-in price in a vehicle sized to your group and luggage, enter the exact address in the Elly8.net web booker.
