Uber Black is usually cheaper than a pre-booked car service, and we will not pretend otherwise. On Uber's own average prices, an Uber Black from Chicago's Near North Side to O'Hare cost US$111, against our fixed US$215 for a Business Sedan from O'Hare to the Loop. The pattern held on every route we checked, in five cities.
The reasons are structural rather than mysterious. An app ride is matched with the nearest available car, priced for that moment, with the tip added afterwards and a short grace period before waiting is charged. A pre-booked chauffeur is assigned to you in advance, drives to you specifically, waits inside arrivals, and is priced with gratuity and waiting after a tracked landing already included. Different products, different prices. This guide shows the numbers and explains what you are paying for.
Why is Uber Black cheaper than a car service?
Because the app matches you with a car that is already nearby, prices the trip for that moment, and adds the tip and wait fees separately. A pre-booked car is dispatched to you alone, waits inside arrivals, absorbs flight delays and includes gratuity. Uber's own averages show Black costing roughly half of a booked sedan on several airport routes.
We used the most honest public source available: Uber's airport pages, which publish the average price riders paid for each ride option over the past month, from a named neighbourhood to the airport. Uber states they are not fixed or guaranteed prices. They are, however, real averages from real trips, published by the company itself, which is more reliable than any third-party fare calculator.
The numbers, route by route

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chicago: Near North Side to O'Hare | US$64 | US$111 | US$145 | US$215 (ORD to the Loop and Magnificent Mile) | US$280 |
| New York: West Side to LaGuardia | US$80 | US$111 | not shown | US$145 (LGA to Midtown) | US$190 |
| New York: West Side to Newark | US$123 | US$154 | not shown | US$215 (EWR to Midtown) | US$280 |

| Seattle: Capitol Hill to SEA | US$78 | US$107 | not shown | US$170 (SEA to downtown) | US$225 |
The Uber figures come from its airport pages for O'Hare, LaGuardia, Newark, Logan, SFO and Seattle-Tacoma. Our fares are fixed, all-in, per vehicle and the same in either direction.
Two things stand out. First, the gap is real: an average Uber Black ran at roughly half to three-quarters of our Business Sedan fare, depending on the route. Second, the closest routes were the New York ones, where LaGuardia and Newark already carry tolls, traffic and congestion charges that weigh on every option.
Reason 1: the nearest car, not a dispatched one
The app's economics depend on matching. A driver who has just dropped someone in River North can take your request to O'Hare within minutes, so the trip carries no empty drive to reach you. A pre-booked chauffeur is assigned to your booking in advance, drives to your pickup in time to be early, parks, and walks into the terminal to meet you.
Uber itself acknowledges that cost when you ask it to plan ahead. On its Uber Comfort page, Uber explains that an Uber Reserve trip includes a reservation fee, "paid by riders for their driver's additional wait time and time/distance spent traveling to the pickup location". A scheduled car costs more to provide than an on-demand match, for the app and for us.
Reason 2: the average includes the quiet hours
A past-month average blends a Tuesday 2 p.m. trip with a Friday 6 p.m. one. Uber's upfront pricing page says prices reflect estimated time and distance plus demand patterns for that route at that time. Quiet hours pull the average down. The busy hours, when most travellers actually move, can cost more than the average suggests.
Our fare does not average anything. It is the same at 5 a.m. on a Sunday as at 6 p.m. on a convention Friday. On a calm day the app wins comfortably; at the busiest moments of the month, the gap narrows. The only way to know is to compare the app's quote at your real travel time with the fixed fare.
Reason 3: different things are included
Comparing headline numbers hides what each covers.
- Gratuity. Uber says riders can add a tip in the app after the trip, on top of the fare. Elly8.net fares already include the standard gratuity.
- Waiting. Uber Black allows a two-minute grace period at airport pickups before per-minute wait fees, according to Uber's Uber Black page, and the driver may charge a cancellation fee after five minutes. Waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary with us, whatever the delay.
- Where you meet. App rides pick up in the airport's designated zones, for example the Central Parking Garage at Logan for Terminals A, C and E. Our chauffeur meets you inside arrivals with a name board, and airport meet and greet is included in the fare; parking is billed at cost.
- Tolls. Uber's upfront price includes expected tolls. Ours bills tolls at cost, separately.
Add the tip to the app fare and the gap shrinks. It does not disappear.
Reason 4: the vehicle is a match, not a reservation
Uber Black matches you with any eligible luxury car nearby; the make is whatever arrives, and Uber says luggage space is not guaranteed. A booked vehicle class is chosen for your group and bags before the day: up to three passengers and two bags in a sedan, six and six in an SUV, twelve and twelve in an Executive Sprinter. That certainty has a cost, and for many trips it is not worth paying. For a family with four large cases or a client arrival, it usually is.
Reason 5: commitment works both ways
An on-demand ride commits nobody until the moment you request it. That is part of why it is cheap: the driver is not holding a slot for you, and you are not paying for one. When you do ask the app to commit in advance, the terms change. Uber says on its Reserve page that cancellation fees for reserved trips are higher than on demand, and that a ride is confirmed once you receive driver details.
A pre-booked chauffeur is a commitment from the start. The vehicle and chauffeur are held for your time, which is why our cancellation terms are tiered: free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% within 72 hours, 50% within 48 hours and 100% within 24 hours or for a no-show. You are paying, in part, for a car that will not be given to someone else.
A worked example: Friday evening at O'Hare
Four colleagues land at O'Hare at 6 p.m. on a Friday with four checked bags, heading to a hotel on the Magnificent Mile for a Saturday conference.
- The train. The CTA charges US$5 for a ride that starts at O'Hare. Four fares are US$20. With four large bags at rush hour, it is possible but not pleasant.
- Two Uber Blacks. A standard Black seats up to four, but four people and four big cases rarely fit one sedan, so many groups would split. Each trip is priced at the moment of request; the US$111 past-month average is a calm-day reference, and Friday evening is not calm.
- One Uber Black SUV. Seats six. The past-month average from the Near North Side to O'Hare was US$145, again a calm-day figure, plus the tip.
- One Elly8.net Business SUV. US$280, fixed, all-in, per vehicle, with the chauffeur inside arrivals and complimentary waiting after the tracked landing.
On the averages, the Black SUV is clearly cheaper. On a Friday at 6 p.m., the honest answer is that the app will show you its price when you land, and the fixed fare was known when you booked. Which matters more depends on the group.
So when is the cheaper option the right one?
More often than a car service would like to admit.
- Short, flexible trips at normal hours. The Boston average, US$60 from the South End to Logan, is excellent value for a premium car.
- One or two people with carry-ons who can walk to the pickup zone.
- Trips where transit is better still. The MBTA's Silver Line from Logan is free, and SFO has BART to downtown. For a solo traveller with light luggage, those beat both of us.
- When you can watch the price. If the app's quote looks high, you can wait, take a taxi, or ride the train.
And when is the booked car worth the difference?
- Arrivals with uncertainty. Late, delayed or international flights, where a two-minute grace period meets a long passport queue.
- Groups. One Business SUV at US$280 from O'Hare carries six passengers and six bags. Our post on Uber Black SUV rates works through the group maths.
- Families. Child seats fitted in advance, on request.
- Clients and schedules. A known vehicle class, a chauffeur briefed before the day, and monthly invoicing for corporate accounts.
- Busy days. Convention weeks, game nights and holiday Fridays, when demand pricing peaks and our fare does not move.
Full fares for these cities are on our Chicago, New York, Boston, San Francisco and Seattle pages.
What about airport fees?
Both models carry them. Airports set fees for app pickups and taxis, and they reach the rider in different ways: built into the app's upfront quote, or added to the taxi meter as a published extra. Our post on the Uber airport surcharge lists the published ones. In our fares, airport meet and greet is included, and tolls and parking are billed at cost.
What the averages cannot tell you about your route
Uber measures each average from one neighbourhood, and our fares are set to a named district, so no row in the table is a perfect match. Pacific Heights is a little closer to SFO than Union Square in some traffic and farther in other traffic; the South End sits near Back Bay; Manhattan's West Side covers both Midtown and the blocks above it. The comparison is close enough to show the scale of the difference, which is large, and not precise enough to tell you your own fare. For that, open the app at the hour you will travel, set your real pickup and drop-off, and set the result next to the fixed price on the city page.
The fair conclusion
Uber Black is cheaper because it is a different product: a nearby match priced for the moment, with tip and waiting extra. A pre-booked chauffeur costs more because it is assigned to you in advance, waits as long as your flight needs, and carries a price that cannot surge. Neither is better in general. Choose by the trip: price the app at your real travel time, look at your bags and your schedule, and pay for certainty only when you need it. Our Uber Black vs a pre-booked chauffeur comparison and the airport transfers page cover the details.
Rides in Toronto and the GTA are operated by the Elly8 fleet; in every other city they are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network, with Elly8.net taking the booking, fixing the price and running the 24/7 desk.
Frequently asked questions
Is Uber Black cheaper than a black car service?
Usually, on an ordinary day. Uber's own past-month average for Uber Black from Chicago's Near North Side to O'Hare was US$111; Elly8.net's fixed Business Sedan fare from O'Hare to the Loop is US$215, including gratuity. On busy days app prices rise and the gap narrows. Compare at your real travel time.
Why do pre-booked car services cost more?
The car is assigned to you in advance and drives to you specifically, rather than being matched from nearby. The chauffeur parks and meets you inside arrivals, waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary, and the fare includes standard gratuity. Uber itself charges a reservation fee on Reserve trips for the driver's extra travel and wait time.
Is Uber Black worth it over UberX?
It depends on what you value. On Uber's averages, Black cost about 1.7 times UberX from Chicago's Near North Side to O'Hare, US$111 against US$64. Black buys a luxury car from an approved list and a professional driver; UberX is the better value when the car itself does not matter.
Does the Uber Black price include the tip?
Uber's upfront price includes tolls, taxes, surcharges and fees, except wait time fees, and Uber says riders can add a tip in the app. Elly8.net fares include standard gratuity, taxes and airport meet and greet, with tolls and parking billed at cost.
Does Uber Black always cost less than a pre-booked car?
Not necessarily. Its price is set for the moment you request, so at busy times it can sit well above its own average, while our fares do not change with demand. If you are travelling at a known peak, such as a convention closing day or a holiday Friday, check the app's quote against the fixed fare before you decide.
Are Uber's average prices reliable?
They are averages of real trips over the past month, published by Uber on its airport pages, for a named neighbourhood to the airport. Uber says they are not fixed or guaranteed. Treat them as a calm-day benchmark: useful for comparison, not a quote for your trip.
