Uber works in Milan, but not the way it works in Chicago or Toronto. Italian law recognises two kinds of non-scheduled car transport, the licensed taxi and the licensed car hire with driver, and app rides in Milan come from those licensed professionals. In practice that means premium cars such as Uber Black and taxis requested through the app, priced by demand at the moment you tap.
If you want a known price before you fly, a pre-booked Elly8.net chauffeur from Linate starts at US$110 per vehicle, and from Malpensa at US$230 in a business sedan, fixed and all-in. This guide explains what the app is likely to show you, when its prices rise, how it compares with Milan's regulated taxi fares, and the trips where pre-booking is simply the better tool.
Is Uber available in Milan?
Yes. In Milan the app connects you with licensed professional drivers: premium car-hire-with-driver vehicles such as Uber Black, and licensed taxis requested through the app. Prices depend on the ride type, distance, time, tolls and current demand. Do not expect the same low-cost tiers you use at home; check what the app offers for your exact pickup.
The legal frame is Law 21 of 1992, the national law on non-scheduled public transport, which lists two types of service: the taxi and the noleggio con conducente, or NCC, car hire with driver (Normattiva, Legge 15 gennaio 1992 n. 21). Every premium app car you meet in Milan is an NCC vehicle with a professional driver. Every taxi is a city-licensed car with a meter and a published tariff.
For a visitor, the practical result is simple. The app is a booking channel, not a separate class of cheap private drivers. What you pay depends on which licensed product it can find near you at that minute, and that changes with the hour, the weather and the city's calendar.
Rides booked through Elly8.net are a third route to the same kind of licensed driver. Rides in Milan are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk.
What you will actually see in the app
Open the app at Malpensa and the airport page leads with Uber Black, the premium sedan tier with professional drivers. In the city you may also see the option to call a licensed taxi through the app, which uses the taxi network rather than private cars. Larger vehicles appear when an operator nearby has one free.
Three things surprise first-time visitors from North America:
- Price level. A premium NCC sedan is a chauffeur product, not a budget one. Expect pricing closer to a black car at home than to an everyday shared ride.
- Availability. The supply of premium cars is finite. On a quiet Sunday morning it may be instant; on the first evening of a fashion week, or when a stadium empties, the nearest car can be some distance away.
- The quote moves. The app's own airport page says the cost depends on the type of ride, the estimated length and duration, tolls, city fees and current demand. That last factor is what most riders mean by surge.
None of this makes the app a poor choice. It means the app works best for short, flexible city hops where a few minutes and a few euros either way do not matter.
How app pricing moves in Milan, and why taxis do not surge
Rideshare prices in Milan are not published as a tariff. They are calculated per trip, and demand is part of the calculation. We will not quote an app price here, because any figure would be out of date by the time you read it.
Milan's taxis work the opposite way. The Comune di Milano publishes a single tariff for the 49 municipalities of the Lombardy airport system, and each passenger pays only what the meter shows or a fixed fare on set routes (Comune di Milano, taxi service and rates). The July 2024 tariff sheet sets a starting charge of €4.10 on weekdays from 6:00 to 21:00, €6.60 on holidays and €7.90 at night, with fixed fares of €114 between Malpensa and any address in Milan and €128 between Bergamo Orio al Serio and Milan, tolls and supplements included.
A taxi can be slow to find on a busy night, but it cannot raise its tariff because demand is high. The app can. A pre-booked chauffeur sits on the other side again: the price is fixed when you reserve, weeks ahead, and charged in US dollars. Malpensa and Linate: app, taxi or a car that is already booked
Most transatlantic flights land at Malpensa, about 47 km (29 mi) from the centre, roughly 51 minutes on a clear road. That distance matters for app pricing: a long trip during a busy arrival wave is exactly where a demand-based quote climbs.
The app lets you reserve ahead and says its flight tracking will tell the driver about delays. That is a fair option. The differences with a pre-booked chauffeur are the meeting and the price: an Elly8.net chauffeur waits inside arrivals with a name board, waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary, and the fare does not move after you book.
Linate is a different case. It is about 9 km (6 mi) from the centre, roughly 17 minutes on a clear road, and the M4 metro reaches San Babila in about 12 minutes on a €2.20 ticket (YesMilano, M4 from Linate). For one person with a carry-on, the metro beats every car, app or otherwise.
| Option | Price basis | What sets the price | Meeting point | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rideshare app, premium car | Quoted per trip | Ride type, time, distance, tolls, demand | Pickup area you are directed to | Flexible travellers, short notice |
| Taxi, Malpensa to Milan | €114 fixed per ride | City tariff, tolls included | Airport taxi rank | Two travellers, no booking |
| Taxi from Linate | Meter, €16 minimum | City tariff by time band | Airport taxi rank | Short hop, no booking |
| Malpensa Express | €15 per adult | Published Trenord fare | Station inside the terminal | One traveller near Centrale or Cadorna |
| M4 metro from Linate | €2.20 per person | ATM ticket | Station at the terminal | Light bags, central hotels |
| Elly8.net from Linate | from US$110 per vehicle | Fixed when you book | Inside arrivals, name board | Families, executives, fixed budgets |
| Elly8.net from Malpensa | from US$230 per vehicle | Fixed when you book | Inside arrivals, name board | Long-haul arrivals, luggage, groups |

When app prices and waits tend to rise
Milan's calendar is predictable, and so are its busy nights. These are the moments when a demand-priced app is most likely to be slow or expensive, and when every kind of car is in short supply:
- Milano Fashion Week, which runs in late February and again in September. Shows are spread across the city, doors close on time, and editors and buyers book cars by the hour.
- Salone del Mobile, usually in April at Fiera Milano in Rho, plus the design week events across Brera, Tortona and Isola. Rho is about 12 km (8 mi) from the Quadrilatero, a routed estimate of 19 minutes on a clear road, and the whole fair closes at the same time.
- The Italian Grand Prix at Monza, usually in early September. Monza is about 19 km (12 mi) north of the centre by our routed estimate, but race-day access roads are slow.
- Football and concerts at San Siro, where everyone leaves at the final whistle.
- La Scala's season opening on 7 December, the traditional Sant'Ambrogio date, black tie and a cordoned piazza.
- Rain at rush hour, which turns a quick hop into a queue for every option.
On those days, two strategies work. Pre-book the car and keep it by the hour, or plan to use the metro and accept the walk. Hoping an app car will appear outside a fashion show at 22:00 is the strategy that fails.
Uber Black or a pre-booked chauffeur?
Uber Black and an Elly8.net First Class or Business Sedan are close relatives: both are professional drivers in premium cars. The difference is in what is fixed in advance.
With an app, you get a quote at the moment of booking for that one trip, and a reservation can be made ahead. With Elly8.net, you choose the vehicle class from a published price list, the price is fixed and all-in, and it includes the chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and airport meet and greet. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost. The chauffeur meets you inside arrivals rather than at a pickup area, and child seats are fitted before you land when you ask for them.
Vehicle choice is the other gap. A Business Sedan or First Class Sedan carries three passengers and two large bags. A Business SUV or First Class SUV carries six passengers and six bags, and an Executive Sprinter twelve passengers and twelve bags. A family of five with transatlantic luggage fits one SUV; with an app, you may end up splitting into two cars that leave at different times.
The fuller argument is on Uber Black vs a pre-booked chauffeur and chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft.
Days, not single rides: where the app stops being practical
Rideshare apps are built for one trip at a time. Milan visitors often need something else: a car that waits outside a showroom, then takes you to lunch in Brera, then to a meeting in Porta Nuova, then to dinner.
For that kind of day, book a car by the hour in Milan: US$90 an hour in a Business Sedan, US$115 in a Business SUV, US$135 in a First Class SUV, US$145 in a First Class Sedan and US$180 in an Executive Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum. The evening out and event night package costs from US$450 in a Business Sedan to US$900 in a Sprinter, and the corporate roadshow day from US$810 to US$1,620.
Corporate travellers usually want one more thing the app cannot give: a single monthly invoice across cities. A corporate account adds fixed airport fares, roadshow days and NDAs on request. See event transportation for show and gala nights.
If you do use a rideshare app in Milan
The app is a sensible choice for plenty of trips. A few habits make it work better:
- Check the product before you confirm. Make sure you know whether you are booking a premium car or a taxi through the app, and what the quoted total includes.
- Walk to a calm pickup point. Narrow streets in the Quadrilatero and Brera, pedestrian areas around the Duomo and tram lines make some addresses hard to stop at. A corner on a wider street saves minutes.
- Leave a margin for trains. Milano Centrale is busy at peak times. If you have a high-speed train to catch, book ahead rather than requesting at the last minute.
- Do not count on it after big events. Plan the exit from San Siro, Rho or Monza before you arrive.
- Remember the metro. Lines M1 to M5 cover most visitor addresses, and M4 links Linate to San Babila.
A few trips where we would not book a car
Fairness matters. From Linate, alone, with a carry-on, to a hotel near San Babila: take the M4. From Malpensa, alone, staying near Centrale or Cadorna: the Malpensa Express is €15 for an adult (Malpensa Express tickets) and avoids motorway traffic. Across the centre on a dry afternoon: walk, or take the tram.
A car, whether app or pre-booked, earns its place with luggage, children, groups, late arrivals, tight schedules and fixed budgets. That is where we would book one, and where a Milan airport transfer at a fixed fare takes the guesswork out.
How to book a fixed-price car in Milan
- Pickup and drop-off. Enter Malpensa, Linate or Bergamo with your flight number, or Milano Centrale with your train, and the hotel or address.
- Vehicle. Choose a Business Sedan, Business SUV, First Class Sedan, First Class SUV or Executive Sprinter from the Milan car service price list.
- Reserve. Pay by card in US$ for a published fare, or use the web booker for any other address, such as Fiera Milano or a multi-stop show day. Confirmation arrives by email.
Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup; 10% applies at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show, with refunds to the original card. Going on to the lakes? See our Lake Como car service.
Frequently asked questions
Can you use Uber in Milan?
Yes. The app connects you with licensed professionals in Milan: premium car-hire-with-driver vehicles such as Uber Black, and licensed taxis requested through the app. What appears depends on availability at your pickup. Prices are quoted per trip and depend on the ride type, distance, time, tolls and demand, so check the total before you confirm.
Is Uber cheaper than a taxi from Malpensa?
Not reliably. The Malpensa taxi fare to any address in Milan is fixed at €114 per ride, tolls included, while app prices are quoted per trip and move with demand. A pre-booked Elly8.net Business Sedan is US$230 per vehicle, fixed, with meet and greet inside arrivals. For one person with light luggage, the €15 Malpensa Express is the cheapest.
Does Uber surge in Milan?
App prices in Milan include current demand as a factor, so quotes rise when many people want cars at once: fashion weeks, the Salone, the Monza Grand Prix, stadium nights and rainy rush hours. Milan taxis cannot surge; they follow the city tariff. A pre-booked chauffeur's price is fixed when you reserve.
Where do I meet an Elly8.net chauffeur at Malpensa?
Inside the arrivals hall of your terminal, Terminal 1 or Terminal 2, after baggage claim. The chauffeur holds a name board, tracks your flight number, and waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary. Give the desk your final flight number, including any European connection, when you book.
What is better for a family of five?
One Business SUV, which carries six passengers and six large bags, from US$300 from Malpensa or US$145 from Linate, per vehicle. Child seats are fitted before pickup when you give the children's ages. With an app or taxis, a group that size often needs two cars.
Can I keep a car for a whole fashion week day?
Yes. Book by the hour from US$90 in a Business Sedan with a 3-hour minimum, or a corporate roadshow day from US$810. The chauffeur waits between shows, showrooms and dinner, and you send the schedule through the web booker. Book early, because cars are committed first in show weeks.
