A Banff taxi runs on a meter, and under the Town of Banff's Taxi Bylaw each taxi company sets its own fares and must display them on the outside of the rear doors. That makes short trips around town easy to price on the spot. Ride-hail is less predictable in a small mountain town, and the Roam buses are the cheapest way to move between Banff, Canmore and Lake Louise. For airport transfers and full days out, a pre-booked Elly8.net car, from US$370 per vehicle for YYC to Banff, fixes the price before you travel.
Banff is compact and walkable, and many visitors need a car only two or three times in a week. This guide explains how each option works, what it costs where prices are published, how long you might wait, and which one fits which trip. Rides in Banff are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk.
How do taxi fares work in Banff?
Banff taxis must use a sealed, tested meter for every fare. The Town of Banff's Taxi Bylaw leaves the rates to each licensed taxi company, which must show its fares and any extra baggage charges on decals facing out from the rear door windows. Check the decal before you get in, and ask for a receipt.
The rules come from the Town of Banff's Taxi Bylaw 25-4, passed on May 8, 2023 and listed on the Town's frequently requested bylaws page. The points that matter to a passenger:
- Meters. Every taxi operated in town must have a taximeter, inspected, tested and sealed, running whenever passengers are carried, and every fare must be recorded through it.
- Who sets the price. The fees charged to passengers are determined by each individual taxi broker, so rates can differ between companies.
- Rates on the door. Each taxi must display decals facing outward on each rear door window, setting out the fare and any additional charges for excess baggage or oversize items.
- Receipts. On request, the driver must issue a receipt for the amount paid.
- Who can pick you up off the street. Only a licensed taxi. Any other vehicle for hire, such as a limousine or sedan service, may only pick up a passenger who agreed to the service before the pickup.
That last rule is why you cannot flag down a limousine on Banff Avenue: a chauffeured car must be booked in advance. It is also why the chauffeur waits at an agreed place rather than cruising for you.
Taking a Banff taxi: what to check
Skis and big bags. The bylaw requires each company to show any extra charges for excess baggage or oversize items on its door decals, so read them before loading skis, snowboards or a stroller. If the group has a lot of gear, ask for a larger vehicle when you call.
Groups. A cab carries a handful of passengers. A group of eight heading to dinner at the Banff Springs needs two cabs, two calls and two waits, and the same again at the end of the night.
Late nights. Check the last Roam departure for your route on the timetable before dinner. If you will miss it, book the taxi before you sit down rather than calling at closing time.
Leaving town. Trips beyond Banff, to Canmore, Lake Louise or the airport, run on the same meter for the whole distance, so the total grows with the kilometres and any slow traffic. For long trips, ask the company for an estimate first.
Rideshare in Banff: a maybe, not a plan
Ride-hail apps work by matching you with a driver who happens to be nearby. In a town of Banff's size, the number of drivers working at any moment is small and changes with the season, and we have not found any official source that confirms regular ride-hail coverage in Banff or publishes driver numbers. Treat an app as something to check, not something to rely on, especially for an early start or a departure to YYC.
At the airport end it is different: YYC's ride app page names Uber and Lyft as its only authorized ride-share operators, with pickups at Doors 3, 12 and 15 on the Arrivals level. A ride from the airport to Banff, about 135 km (84 mi), is priced by the app at the time you request, and finding a driver for the return from Banff is a separate question. Our Calgary airport to Banff guide compares the airport options in full.
Roam Transit: the cheapest way around
Roam Transit runs the local Banff routes and the regional buses. Its published adult fares:
| Roam route | Adult single ride | Adult day pass | Youth and senior single | Children 12 and under |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Banff Local (downtown, Sulphur Mountain, Banff Springs, Tunnel Mountain, Banff Centre) | C$2 | C$5 | C$1 | free |
| Canmore to Banff Regional | C$6 | C$15 | C$3 | free |
| Banff to Lake Louise Express (reservable) | C$12.50 | C$25 | C$6.25 | free |
| Banff to Johnston Canyon (seasonal) | C$5 | C$10 | C$2.50 | free |
Roam sells tickets for exact cash on the bus, through the Token Transit and Transit apps, at ticket machines and at the customer service desk in the Banff Visitor Centre at 224 Banff Avenue. Reservations on the Lake Louise Express carry a C$3 transaction fee per booking. The Johnston Canyon route was listed as returning on November 30.
For one or two people with day packs, Roam is the right answer for most trips around town and up the valley. It is cheap, and its timetables are published, so it is easy to plan around.
Wait times: what to expect
Taxi. Calling ahead is the reliable way to get a cab. The busy moments are predictable: the end of the ski day, dinner hour on a Saturday, and the evenings of big events such as the Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival, which runs from October 31 to November 8, 2026. At those times, expect to wait.
Rideshare. Unknown until you open the app, and likely to be longest exactly when demand is highest.
Roam. Your wait is the gap to the next departure on the timetable. Lake Louise Express seats in summer should be reserved.
Pre-booked car. No wait: the chauffeur is at the agreed place at the agreed time, and complimentary waiting after a tracked landing applies on airport pickups.
Which to use, trip by trip
| Trip | Best option | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Around downtown Banff | walk, or Roam Local (C$2) | small town, frequent buses |
| Hotel to the Banff Gondola or the Banff Springs | Roam Local, or a taxi with bags or late at night | cheap; cab for convenience |
| Banff to Canmore for dinner, two people | Roam (C$6 each way) or a taxi | cheap; cab if the last bus is too early |
| Banff to Lake Louise, one or two people | Roam 8X (C$12.50) | reservable, year-round |
| Lake Louise and Moraine Lake day, family or group | Elly8.net 8-hour day, from US$810 | chauffeur to the Parks Canada Park and Ride and back |
| Ski day at Norquay, Sunshine or Lake Louise with gear | Elly8.net, quoted in the web booker | door to door with skis inside |
| YYC to Banff, any group with bags | Elly8.net, from US$370 (sedan) to US$965 (Sprinter) | fixed, per vehicle, meet and greet |
The fair summary: inside town and for simple valley trips, Roam and taxis are the right tools, and a chauffeur is not needed to cross Banff Avenue. A pre-booked car wins on the airport legs, on days with several stops and lots of gear, for groups who would otherwise need two or three cabs, and whenever the price must be fixed in advance.
When a pre-booked car is worth it
Airport transfers. YYC to the town of Banff is fixed at US$370 in a Business Sedan, US$485 in a Business SUV, US$595 in a First Class SUV and US$965 in an Executive Sprinter, the same in either direction, per vehicle, all-in.
Lake days. Parks Canada closes Moraine Lake Road to personal vehicles and runs reservable shuttles from the Lake Louise Park and Ride. The 8-hour Lake Louise and Moraine Lake day, from US$810 in a Business Sedan to US$1,620 in an Executive Sprinter, is built around that system; our Lake Louise shuttle vs private car guide explains how it works.
Ski days. Mt Norquay sits above town, Sunshine Village is to the west and the Lake Louise Ski Resort is up the valley. With boots, skis and children, a car from your hotel door to the base saves the most effort; transfers are quoted in the web booker.
A day or evening with several stops. The private city highlights tour, from US$440 in a Business Sedan to US$880 in an Executive Sprinter, can combine the Banff Gondola, the hot springs and the Banff Springs. The evening out and event night package is from US$550, and an hourly chauffeur is from US$110 an hour with a three-hour minimum. Any of these keep one vehicle with you, rather than calling a new cab for each leg.
Weddings and retreats. Groups moving between hotels, ceremonies and dinners book Sprinters and sedans together; see wedding limousine and guest shuttles and corporate car service.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a taxi in Banff?
Each licensed taxi company sets its own metered rates under the Town of Banff's Taxi Bylaw, so there is no single town-wide fare. The rates and any extra baggage charges must be displayed on decals facing out from the rear door windows. Read the decal before you ride, and ask for a receipt.
Is there Uber in Banff?
We have not found an official source confirming regular ride-hail coverage in the town of Banff. At Calgary airport, YYC names Uber and Lyft as its authorized ride-share operators. In Banff, open the app and see, but do not rely on it for an early start or an airport departure.
Can I hail a limo or private car in Banff?
No. Under the Town's Taxi Bylaw, only a licensed taxi may pick up a passenger without a prior agreement. Limousines and sedan services can only carry passengers who booked before the pickup, so a chauffeured car is always arranged in advance.
What is the cheapest way to get from Banff to Lake Louise?
The Roam Transit Banff to Lake Louise Express, at C$12.50 for an adult single ride or C$25 for a day pass, with children 12 and under free. Reservations are recommended in summer. For Moraine Lake, the Parks Canada shuttle from the Lake Louise Park and Ride is required.
