The Lake Louise shuttle most people mean is the Parks Canada shuttle from the Lake Louise Park and Ride to Lake Louise and Moraine Lake. It is cheap, C$12.75 for an adult in 2026, and it is the only practical way to reach Moraine Lake, but it needs a reservation and Parks Canada tells visitors to expect waits of at least 30 minutes. A private car does not replace it. With Elly8.net, the 8-hour Lake Louise and Moraine Lake day, from US$810 per vehicle, is built around it.
That is the honest headline: for the lakes themselves, the shuttle wins on cost and on access. A private car is about everything around the shuttle: getting from Banff or Calgary to the Park and Ride on time, carrying the gear, the lunch in Lake Louise village, and the parts of the year when there is no shuttle at all. Rides in Banff are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk.
Is the Lake Louise shuttle worth it?
Yes, for almost everyone visiting in season. The Parks Canada shuttle costs C$12.75 per adult plus a C$3.50 online reservation fee, reaches both lakes on one ticket and is the only way most visitors can get to Moraine Lake. A private car is worth adding for the trip to the Park and Ride, families with gear and off-season days.
Three different things called the Lake Louise shuttle
1. The Parks Canada shuttle. Runs from the Lake Louise Park and Ride at the Lake Louise Ski Resort (1 Whitehorn Road) to Lake Louise Lakeshore and to Moraine Lake, with a Lake Connector between the two lakes. Reservations are required. This is the one this post is mostly about.
2. Roam Transit Route 8X. A public bus from the town of Banff to the Lake Louise Lakeshore along the Trans-Canada, year-round, with reservations available and highly recommended in summer.
3. Airport coaches. Scheduled coaches from Calgary International Airport (YYC) to Banff and Lake Louise. Banff and Lake Louise Tourism notes shuttle connections from the airport to both, and YYC lists the operators on its bus page. For the airport leg, see our Calgary airport to Banff guide.
The Parks Canada shuttle in detail
All of this is from Parks Canada's Lake Louise and Moraine Lake page for the 2026 season. Parks Canada publishes each new season's dates and reservation launch in the spring, so check the page before planning a 2027 trip.
- Season. Lake Louise Lakeshore from May 15 to October 12, 2026; Moraine Lake and the Lake Connector from June 1 to October 12, weather permitting.
- Frequency. Every 30 minutes, with departures from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. (8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the second half of May for Lake Louise) and the last return at 7:30 p.m.
- Alpine Start. Two early departures, at 4 a.m. and 5 a.m., from the Lake Louise Lakeshore parking lot, where paid parking applies.
- Reservations. The 2026 reservation launch was April 15 at 8 a.m. MDT, when 40% of seats were released; the remaining 60% are released at 8 a.m. MDT two days before each departure day. You choose a one-hour departure window and a first lake, and up to 10 seats fit on one reservation.
- Check-in. You must check in at the Park and Ride kiosk during your one-hour window. Shuttle holders who park at the Lake Louise Lakeshore lot are not allowed on the shuttle.
- Waits. Parks Canada says to expect to wait at least 30 minutes for a shuttle, and up to an hour during periods of high ridership.
The fares. Parks Canada's fees page lists the 2026 shuttle at C$12.75 for adults, C$6.00 for seniors and C$4.00 for youth 17 and under, plus a non-refundable C$3.50 reservation fee online or C$5.50 by phone, charged once per reservation. One ticket covers a lake, the Lake Connector to the other lake and the return to the Park and Ride. The ticket does not include the national park pass, which is required separately: C$12.25 for an adult per day, or C$24.50 for a family or group of up to seven in one vehicle.
Why a private car cannot simply drive you to the lakes
Moraine Lake. Parks Canada says Moraine Lake Road is closed to personal vehicles year-round. Access is only for Parks Canada shuttles, licensed commercial operators with a Moraine Lake Road Licence of Occupation, and registered guests of Moraine Lake Lodge. We do not assume a chauffeured car holds that licence, so an Elly8.net day uses the Parks Canada shuttle for Moraine Lake.
Lake Louise Lakeshore. Vehicles can still drive up, but Parks Canada recommends against it because parking is unlikely, and the fees page lists Lakeshore parking at C$42.00 per vehicle for the day from May 15 to October 12, 2026. A car that drops you at the Lakeshore also takes you out of the shuttle system for the day, because shuttle holders who arrive at the Lakeshore lot are not permitted to board.
So in season, the best use of a car is the Park and Ride, not the lake.
Cost compared
| Option | What you pay | Covers | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parks Canada shuttle, 2 adults | C$25.50 plus C$3.50 fee | both lakes and the return to the Park and Ride | park pass extra; you get to the Park and Ride yourself |
| Parks Canada shuttle, 2 adults and 2 youth | C$33.50 plus C$3.50 fee | as above | youth fare C$4.00 |
| Roam 8X, Banff to Lake Louise | C$12.50 adult one way; C$25 day pass | Banff to the Lakeshore | children 12 and under free; C$3 per booking reservation fee |
| Lakeshore parking, own car | C$42.00 per vehicle | parking only | lot often full; not valid for the shuttle |
| Elly8.net 8-hour day, Business SUV | US$1,035 per vehicle | chauffeur, pickup in Banff, Park and Ride drop and collection, lunch stop | shuttle tickets and park passes extra |
| Elly8.net 8-hour day, Executive Sprinter | US$1,620 per vehicle | as above, for up to 12 | about US$135 each for 12, as arithmetic |
Roam fares are from Roam Transit's fares page, which lists the Banff to Lake Louise Express at C$12.50 for adults and C$6.25 for youth and seniors, with children 12 and under free. Elly8.net prices are in US dollars and per vehicle; Parks Canada and Roam prices are in Canadian dollars and per person.
On cost alone, the shuttle and the bus win easily for one to four people. A private day is a comfort and time purchase, and it makes the most sense for families with small children, groups who would otherwise coordinate several rental cars, and anyone short on time.
Wait time compared
Shuttle. You check in during a one-hour window, then wait at least 30 minutes for a seat, and up to an hour at peak times, according to Parks Canada. The return queue at the lakes can be similar in the afternoon.
Roam 8X. Runs to a timetable from Banff; your wait is the gap to your reserved departure.
Private car. No wait at either end of the drive: the chauffeur leaves Banff when you do and is at the Park and Ride when you come back. It does not shorten the shuttle queue itself, which is the same for everyone.
The practical gain is reliability. The Park and Ride is about 58 km (36 mi) from the town of Banff, roughly 50 minutes on a clear road, and missing your one-hour check-in window is the most common way a lake day goes wrong. A car timed to your window removes that risk.
Comfort compared
The shuttle is a bus: you stand in line, sit with others and carry your own pack. That is fine for most adults. It is harder with a toddler, a stroller and a cooler, or for a guest who finds queues and steps difficult; Parks Canada does offer an accessible shuttle on request at check-in, with a maximum wait of 30 minutes.
The car adds a warm, dry place to leave layers and lunch, a stop in Lake Louise village afterwards, and a door-to-door ride home at the end of a long day. Moraine Lake has no cell service, so agree a meeting time with your chauffeur before you board.
How the Elly8.net Lake Louise day works
The package sits on the Banff car service page. The 8-hour Lake Louise and Moraine Lake package is priced from US$810 in a Business Sedan, US$1,035 in a Business SUV and US$1,325 in a First Class Sedan to US$1,620 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle.
- Reserve your shuttle seats on the Parks Canada system and send the desk your window.
- The chauffeur collects you in Banff and drives to the Park and Ride in time for check-in.
- You ride the shuttle to both lakes, using the Lake Connector between them.
- The chauffeur collects you at the Park and Ride, with time for lunch in the village or a slower drive back to Banff.
Outside the shuttle season, there is no Parks Canada shuttle to Moraine Lake, and the day becomes Lake Louise and the village. Staying in Calgary instead? The 10-hour Banff and Lake Louise day trip from the Calgary car service page starts at US$1,015 in a Business Sedan. For other ideas, see private city tours.
The verdict
- Couples and solo travellers based in Banff: Roam 8X plus the Parks Canada shuttle. Cheapest and simplest.
- Visitors with a rental car: drive to the Park and Ride, not the Lakeshore, and ride the shuttle.
- Families with young children, groups, and short trips: a private day around the shuttle, so the only queue is the shuttle itself.
- Off-season visitors: Roam 8X or a private car to Lake Louise, as Moraine Lake has no shuttle.
For getting around town on other days, see our Banff taxi or rideshare guide. For the general case, see chauffeur vs shared airport shuttle.

Frequently asked questions
How much is the Lake Louise shuttle?
Parks Canada lists the 2026 shuttle at C$12.75 for adults, C$6.00 for seniors and C$4.00 for youth 17 and under, plus a C$3.50 online reservation fee per booking. One ticket covers Lake Louise, Moraine Lake via the Lake Connector and the return to the Park and Ride. A park pass is extra.
Can a private car take us to Moraine Lake?
Only if the operator holds a Moraine Lake Road Licence of Occupation. Parks Canada says the road is closed to personal vehicles year-round, so our day uses the Parks Canada shuttle for Moraine Lake, with the chauffeur taking you to and from the Park and Ride.
How long do you wait for the Lake Louise shuttle?
Parks Canada says to expect at least 30 minutes, and up to an hour during periods of high ridership. You also need to check in at the Park and Ride kiosk during your one-hour departure window, so arrive at the start of it.
When do shuttle reservations open?
For 2026, reservations opened on April 15 at 8 a.m. MDT with 40% of seats, and the remaining 60% are released at 8 a.m. MDT two days before each departure day. Parks Canada announces each new season's launch date in spring.
Is the private day worth it for a couple?
On cost, usually not: Roam 8X and the shuttle cost a fraction of the US$810 Business Sedan day. It earns its place for couples with little time, a special occasion, or a plan that adds Lake Louise village, a slower drive back and an evening in Banff.
What is the cancellation policy?
Free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show. If Parks Canada changes your shuttle window, tell the desk so the pickup moves.
