From Hartsfield-Jackson, a taxi is the simplest predictable option into the city: City of Atlanta taxis charge flat fares of US$37.50 to Downtown, US$39.50 to Midtown and US$49.50 to Buckhead for one person, plus US$2.00 per extra passenger. Rideshare can be cheaper or dearer depending on the hour, but its price is set by the app at request time and the pickup is a walk to a dedicated lot. MARTA, at US$2.50, is cheapest of all for light travellers.
The real differences are the walk, the wait and what happens when something goes wrong: a delayed flight, a missing child seat, more bags than a sedan holds, or a 1 am arrival. This guide compares each option on those points, using the airport's own published rules, and says plainly when a pre-booked Elly8.net car, from US$150 to Midtown, is worth it and when it is not.
Is a taxi or rideshare better from Hartsfield-Jackson?
For one or two travellers going Downtown, Midtown or Buckhead, the taxi's flat fare is predictable and usually good value; rideshare can undercut it at quiet hours but rises at peaks. MARTA is cheapest for light bags. A pre-booked car is better for late flights, families with child seats, heavy luggage and suburbs.
Neither the taxi nor the app is universally better. The taxi's advantage is a known fare inside the business district zones and a stand close to the terminal exits. The app's advantage is that it serves any address at whatever the current price is, with a pickup lot that takes a few minutes to reach.

The options at a glance
All third-party figures below come from the airport's ground transportation page and MARTA. App fares are not published, so we describe how they work rather than invent a number.
| Option | Price to Midtown | Where you board (Domestic) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| MARTA Red or Gold line | US$2.50 per person | Airport Station inside the terminal, between North and South baggage claim | Solo travellers with light bags near a station |
| Shared-ride shuttle | Up to US$18.50 per person (Downtown US$16.50, Buckhead US$30) | Aisle B, Ground Transportation Center | Budget travellers who can wait for other passengers |
| City of Atlanta taxi | US$39.50 for one, US$2.00 per extra person, plus fuel surcharge when triggered | Aisle A, Ground Transportation Center, stalls A3 to A10 | One to four people to zone hotels, no booking |
| Rideshare app | Set by the app at request time | North Economy lot, via lower level near door LN1 | Off-peak solo trips, any address |
| Elly8.net business sedan | US$150 fixed, all-in | Inside baggage claim, name board | Late flights, meetings, fixed budgets |
| Elly8.net business SUV | US$195 fixed, all-in | Inside baggage claim, name board | Families with bags and child seats |
The walk: where each option picks you up
At ATL the pickup location shapes the experience more than people expect, especially with children or heavy cases.
Taxis at the Domestic Terminal load in Aisle A of the new Ground Transportation Center, on the west end of the terminal between the North and South sides. Shared-ride shuttles are in Aisle B next to it. At the International Terminal, taxis wait on the arrival level outside door A-1.
Rideshare at the Domestic Terminal is in the North Economy lot. The airport's directions are to go through North baggage claim to the lower-level escalators between doors LN1, follow the orange signs to the lot, and request your ride only once you are there. If your airline delivers bags to South baggage claim, that means crossing to the North side first. At the International Terminal, rideshare pickups are on the arrival level outer curb: exit door A1 or A2 and walk across the crosswalk.
MARTA's Airport Station is inside the Domestic Terminal, between the North and South baggage claims. International arrivals can take the free shuttle from the International Terminal arrivals level to Domestic baggage claim, which MARTA's airport guide says runs 24/7 with about 15 minutes travel time, or ride the Plane Train.
An Elly8.net chauffeur waits inside, in baggage claim on your airline's side of the Domestic Terminal or in the International Terminal arrivals hall after customs, holding a name board, and walks you to the car.
Wait times: what decides them
No one publishes a live average wait for ATL taxis or app rides, so treat any quoted number with caution. What we can describe is what moves the wait.
Taxi queues
At a taxi stand you generally join a line and cabs pull forward in turn. The wait depends on how many flights landed in the last half hour and how many cabs are staged. In busy arrival waves or on convention weeks, the passenger line can grow; late at night, when fewer cabs are working, you may wait for a car to come forward instead.
Rideshare matching
With an app, the clock starts only when you request at the lot, since the airport asks you not to request earlier. You then wait for a driver to accept and drive in. At peaks, more riders compete for the same drivers and the app's price and wait both rise. Late at night, fewer drivers may be nearby. A cancelled match means starting again.
MARTA frequency
Trains run on a timetable, and the trip to Downtown is predictable once you are aboard. MARTA notes that after 8.30 pm, riders heading to Buckhead, Medical Center, Dunwoody, Sandy Springs or North Springs may need to take the Gold line and change to a Red line train at Lindbergh Center, which adds a step for late arrivals.
A pre-booked car
The chauffeur tracks your flight and is in position when you land. You get complimentary waiting after a tracked landing, so the wait is the chauffeur's, not yours. This is the main thing you pay for.
Luggage, children and groups
The headline fares assume an easy trip. Real trips are often not.
- Child seats. Do not count on a taxi or a standard app car having one; plan to bring your own. Elly8.net provides child seats on request, fitted before you arrive.
- Bags. A business sedan takes up to 3 passengers and 2 bags. A business SUV takes 6 passengers and 6 bags. An Executive Sprinter takes 12 and 12. Booking the right class means no one arrives to find the boot is too small.
- Groups of five or more. A taxi or standard app car splits the group. One SUV at US$195 or one Sprinter at US$390 to Midtown keeps everyone together.
For a family of four going to Buckhead, the taxi flat fare is US$55.50 before any fuel surcharge or tip, which is excellent value if the bags fit and you have your own child seats. If they do not, the pre-booked SUV is the practical answer. We work through this example in more detail in our Atlanta airport taxi guide.
Time of day: a quick decision guide
Mid-morning or early afternoon, solo, light bag, zone hotel. Take MARTA if your hotel is near a station; otherwise the taxi. The app may be cheaper at this hour, but compare at the time.
Weekday 4 to 7 pm. Traffic on the Downtown Connector is at its worst, and our desk plans 40 to 60 minutes for a northbound arrival at 5 pm. The taxi's flat fare protects you from the traffic inside the zones; the app's fare and wait typically rise. For suburbs, a fixed price set in advance avoids a meter crawling in traffic.
Late evening, 10 pm onward. Fewer cabs and app drivers are working, and MARTA's late-evening change at Lindbergh Center applies for some northern stations. A delayed flight compounds the problem. This is when a pre-booked car is most useful.
Event and convention days. When the Georgia World Congress Center has a major show or Mercedes-Benz Stadium has a big game, Downtown hotels and their access roads are busy, and both queues lengthen. Book ahead.
Staying near the airport
Not every traveller heads into the city. If your hotel or meeting is in the airport district, check before choosing a taxi or app ride, because the airport may already connect you for free. The airport's ATL SkyTrain runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and links the terminals with the Rental Car Center, the West Parking Deck, the Georgia International Convention Center (GICC), Gateway Center Arena and the Gateway hotels, according to the airport's ground transportation page.
Many other airport hotels run their own shuttles, which pick up in Aisle C of the Ground Transportation Center at the Domestic Terminal. Call the hotel for times. For these short trips a taxi, which is metered outside the three city zones, or the hotel shuttle is usually the sensible choice, and we would not suggest a chauffeur unless you need child seats or have a group with luggage. For College Park and the other addresses not on our price list, the web booker shows a fixed price instantly if you want to compare.
Going to Hartsfield-Jackson
The flat fares on the airport's page are listed as fares from the airport; for the trip back, ask your hotel or the driver how the fare will be charged. The app is convenient for departures from central hotels at normal hours, but for a 5 am flight, a pre-booked pickup removes the risk of no driver accepting. Our airport transfers service times departures around check-in, security and the walk to your concourse.
When to book a car instead
Choose a pre-booked Elly8.net car when:
- Your flight lands late or is prone to delay.
- You travel with children who need child seats.
- You have more bags than a sedan or taxi boot can carry.
- You are going outside Downtown, Midtown and Buckhead, where the taxi meter applies and app prices vary.
- The trip ends at a meeting, a wedding or an event with a fixed start time.
- You want the cost on a corporate account with monthly invoicing.
- You are a group who would otherwise need two or three cars.
Otherwise, the taxi, the shuttle or the train is a perfectly good choice, and we would rather you used them than paid for a car you did not need. The wider argument is on chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft and chauffeur vs airport shuttle.

If your trip continues by road, the same booking works for a Charlotte car service or a Louisville car service.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a taxi from Hartsfield-Jackson to Downtown Atlanta?
The flat fare is US$37.50 for one person, which includes a US$1.50 airport surcharge, plus US$2.00 for each additional passenger. A fuel surcharge of US$2.00 or US$3.00 applies when average gas prices pass the thresholds on the airport's ground transportation page.
Where is the rideshare pickup at Hartsfield-Jackson?
At the Domestic Terminal, in the North Economy lot. Walk through North baggage claim to the lower-level escalators between doors LN1 and follow the orange signs, requesting your ride only on arrival. At the International Terminal, pickups are on the arrival level outer curb outside doors A1 and A2.
Is MARTA faster than a taxi from ATL?
At rush hour, MARTA is often the more predictable option, because the train avoids the Downtown Connector. The fare is US$2.50. It is less convenient with heavy luggage or children, and late in the evening some northbound riders need to change at Lindbergh Center.
Do Atlanta airport taxis take more than four passengers?
The flat fare adds US$2.00 for each extra passenger, but how many people and bags fit depends on the vehicle that pulls up. For five or more people with luggage, a pre-booked business SUV for six or an Executive Sprinter for twelve is the reliable choice.
When is a pre-booked car worth it from ATL?
When you land late, travel with children who need child seats, carry heavy luggage, head to a suburb outside the taxi zones, have a fixed meeting or event time, or travel as a group. A business sedan to Midtown is US$150 fixed and all-in.
How do I cancel a pre-booked ATL pickup?
Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show. Refunds go to the original card. Contact the desk if your flight is cancelled.
