A taxi from Naples to Sorrento has an official fixed fare: €125 per car, one way, set by the Comune di Napoli. It includes the airport supplement, luggage, night and holiday surcharges, but not motorway tolls, and a €5 supplement applies for more than four passengers or a seven-to-nine-seat car. You must ask for the fixed fare when the ride starts. The drive from Naples Airport is about 52 km (32 mi), roughly an hour on a clear road.
That is a fair price for a car to the Sorrento peninsula, and for many travellers it is the right choice. A pre-booked Elly8.net car costs more, but it is fixed in US dollars before you fly, meets you inside arrivals with a name board, tracks your flight, and comes in sizes from a sedan to a twelve-seat Sprinter. This guide compares the taxi, the bus, the train and a booked car, and says plainly who should choose which.
How much is a taxi from Naples to Sorrento?
The Comune di Napoli sets a fixed one-way taxi fare of €125 per car from Naples to Sorrento. It includes the radio-taxi call, night, holiday, luggage, animal and airport supplements. Motorway tolls are extra, and a €5 minivan supplement applies for more than four passengers. Ask the driver for the fixed fare before the ride starts.
The figures come from the city's official taxi tariff, approved by council resolution 258 of 27 June 2024 and published on the Comune di Napoli's taxi service page, with the full tariff sheet in Italian, English and other languages.

The official Naples taxi fares that matter for Sorrento
The same tariff sheet lists fixed one-way fares from Naples to several destinations on the way to, or beyond, Sorrento. All are per car, with tolls and the minivan supplement excluded.
| From Naples to | Official fixed taxi fare, per car | Road distance from Naples Airport | Clear-road drive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pompei Scavi (the archaeological site) | €70 | about 28 km / 17 mi (routed estimate) | about 27 min |
| Sorrento | €125 | about 52 km / 32 mi | about 61 min (routed estimate) |
| Positano | €145 | about 62 km / 38 mi | about 70 min |
| Amalfi | €155 | about 65 km / 40 mi | about 70 min |
| Ravello | €160 | about 59 km / 37 mi | about 70 min |
Distances to Positano, Amalfi and Ravello come from our Amalfi Coast fact sheet and city page; Pompei Scavi and Sorrento are routed estimates from the public OSRM routing engine.
How to get the fixed fare. The city's rules say the fixed fare must be requested at the start of the ride, the driver cannot refuse it, and a receipt showing the route and amount should be issued before departure. On the meter display, a fixed-fare ride shows "F0.00". The city also advises noting the four-digit taxi number shown on the doors and inside the car, in case you leave something behind.
The meter, if you do not ask. On the meter, a weekday daytime ride starts at €4.00, or €7.50 at night and on holidays, with supplements of €5.00 for rides to or from the airport and €0.50 for each bag larger than 40 x 30 x 20 cm. Trips outside the city boundary run on the extra-urban rate, and the city notes that a driver is not obliged to accept an ordinary extra-urban trip. In short: ask for the fixed fare.
Where the taxis are at Naples Airport
The airport's taxi page says the ordinary taxi lane is in front of arrivals, while shared, radio and extra-urban taxis use areas near the pick-up parking area, about 100 metres from arrivals. In summer, when several flights land together, expect a line. From central Naples, the fixed fares from the airport to the port at Molo Beverello (€24) and to the Central Station area at Piazza Garibaldi (€21) are on the same tariff sheet, which helps if you are going to a ferry first.
The bus from Naples Airport to Sorrento
The airport's bus page lists Curreri Viaggi as the operator serving Pompei, Castellammare di Stabia, Vico Equense, Meta, Piano di Sorrento, Sant'Agnello and Sorrento. Departures leave from the P Bus stop next to the P1 parking area, and the airport notes that journeys can take longer in high season because of traffic. It does not publish the fare on that page; check the operator's own timetable.
For one or two travellers with a suitcase each and no fixed arrival time, the bus is the budget answer. It runs to a timetable rather than to your flight, and the last stop is a bus stop rather than your hotel door.
The Circumvesuviana train
From central Naples, the regional railway operator EAV runs the Circumvesuviana line from Napoli to Pompei Scavi and Sorrento; see the EAV timetables. It is the classic budget route down the peninsula and stops at Pompeii's archaeological site on the way.
It is a commuter railway, not an airport express. From the airport you first need to reach the city, by the Alibus or a taxi, and then carry your luggage onto a local train for the rest of the journey. For a day trip from a Naples hotel with no bags, it is excellent value. For an arrival with suitcases, most travellers prefer a road option.
A pre-booked car: what you pay for
Elly8.net does not publish a fixed Naples Airport to Sorrento fare; Sorrento is quoted in the web booker, which returns a fixed price in US dollars before you pay. Our published Naples Airport fare runs to Positano, the reference point for the coast: US$280 in a Business Sedan, US$365 in a Business SUV, US$450 in a First Class SUV, US$490 in a First Class Sedan and US$730 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle. A round trip from the airport costs from US$535 in a business sedan.
Set those numbers against the official taxi fare honestly: the taxi to Positano is €145 per car. For two travellers with light bags who are happy to find the rank, the taxi is the cheaper choice, full stop.
What the pre-booked car adds:
- Meet and greet inside arrivals, with a name board, rather than a walk to the taxi lane. See meet and greet.
- Flight tracking, with complimentary waiting after a tracked landing; many travellers from North America reach Naples on a connection, and connections run late.
- The right vehicle. A Business Sedan carries three passengers and two large bags, a Business SUV or First Class SUV six and six, and an Executive Sprinter twelve and twelve. A group of eight with luggage is one Sprinter, not two taxis.
- Child seats fitted before pickup, on request.
- A stop on the way, such as Pompeii, added at a fixed price.
- A price agreed in US dollars before you fly, including taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet. Tolls and parking are billed at cost.
Rides on the Amalfi Coast and in Naples are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk.
Arriving by train at Napoli Centrale
Many travellers reach Naples by high-speed train from Rome rather than by air. From Napoli Centrale to Sorrento is about 49 km (30 mi), roughly 56 minutes on a clear road by our routed estimate, and the official €125 fixed taxi fare is the same, because it is set for trips from Naples. The station sits on Piazza Garibaldi; take a licensed taxi from the rank and ask for the fixed fare before you load the bags.
A pre-booked car meets you at the station instead: give the train number, and the chauffeur tracks it and waits. See train station transfers.
The return: Sorrento to Naples
The Naples fixed fares are set by the Comune di Napoli for trips that start in Naples. A taxi starting in Sorrento is a Sorrento taxi working under its own local rules, and we could not find a published Sorrento tariff to quote, so ask your hotel to book the car and confirm the price before you set off.
A pre-booked Elly8.net car is the same fixed price in either direction, so the quote you get for Naples Airport to Sorrento also applies to the return, and a round trip can be booked together. For departures, build in time for summer traffic on the peninsula road and for the airport's security queues.
Summer traffic on the peninsula
The clear-road hour from Naples Airport to Sorrento is a best case. The route leaves Naples on the motorway past Vesuvius and finishes on the peninsula road, which carries buses, delivery vans and holiday traffic through a string of towns. On a summer afternoon the same drive can take much longer, and that applies equally to a taxi, a bus and a booked car. The difference is in how the price behaves: the official taxi fare and a pre-booked fare are both fixed, while a metered ride keeps counting.
Who should choose what
| Traveller | Our pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One or two people, light bags, daytime | Official taxi at the €125 fixed fare | Good value door to door; ask for the fixed fare |

| Day trip from a Naples hotel, no luggage | Circumvesuviana | Cheap, stops at Pompei Scavi |
| Family with children and car seats | Pre-booked Business SUV | Seats fitted, six bags, meeting inside arrivals |
| Group of five to twelve | Pre-booked Executive Sprinter | One vehicle, twelve bags, one fixed price |
| Late or connecting flight | Pre-booked car | Flight tracked, no line at midnight |
| Going on to Positano or Amalfi | Pre-booked car, or the €145 or €155 taxi | Choose by group size and how much the meeting matters |
Rideshare in Naples
Uber publishes a city page for Napoli, but not for Sorrento or the Amalfi Coast towns, on its list of Italian cities. In Italy, app rides come from licensed professionals, either premium hire cars with drivers or taxis requested through the app, priced at the time you request. From the airport, the official fixed taxi fare is the more predictable choice of the two on-the-day options. See chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft.
Going on from Sorrento: Capri and the coast
Sorrento is a hub. From its harbour, fast boats cross to Capri, and the coast road continues to Positano, about 16 km (10 mi), roughly 21 minutes on a clear road by our routed estimate, and on to Amalfi. Visitors' cars are not allowed on Capri, so the island is a boat-and-taxi plan; our guide to Capri taxis, apps and private cars covers it. For getting around the coast itself, read Amalfi Coast taxi vs Uber vs private car.
Many visitors combine Sorrento with a day at Pompeii, about 26 km (16 mi) from Sorrento by our routed estimate. The Elly8.net Pompeii day trip, an 8-hour package, costs from US$665 in a business sedan to US$1,325 in a Sprinter.
