On the Amalfi Coast a taxi is a local, licensed car working from the coast towns, booked through your hotel or found at a stand in the bigger towns, and priced by the meter or agreed before you leave. App rides are not a realistic plan: Uber lists Naples among its Italian cities, but not Positano, Amalfi, Ravello or Sorrento. A pre-booked Elly8.net driver starts at US$90 an hour in a business sedan, with a 3-hour minimum, fixed before the day.
Between the towns there is also a cheap public option on the road, the SITA buses, and a beautiful one on the water, the ferries. Which one to use depends on the trip: a short hop from Amalfi up to Ravello, a dinner in another town, a day of sightseeing, or the arrival from Naples. This guide goes through each, with the numbers we could verify on official sources and a fair verdict for each case.
Is there a taxi service on the Amalfi Coast?
Yes. The coast towns have licensed taxis and hire cars with drivers, booked by phone, through your hotel or at a stand. Fares are on the meter or agreed in advance, so confirm the price before you set off. In summer, cars are in high demand, so book anything time-sensitive, such as a dinner or a ferry, ahead.
Two kinds of licensed car work the coast, as across Italy: the taxi and the NCC, a hire car with driver booked in advance. Both are local businesses. Both are exempt from the coast road's summer traffic restriction, which matters more than visitors expect, as explained below.

The options side by side
| Option | How the price works | Availability | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local taxi or NCC | Meter, or agreed before you set off | Limited in summer; book ahead | Short hops, one-off rides, Ravello and back |
| App ride | Set by the app at request time | No Uber listing for the coast towns | Not a dependable option on the coast |
| SITA bus | Per-person ticket | Scheduled; crowded in summer | Light travellers between towns |
| Ferry (Travelmar and others) | Per-person ticket, set by the operator | Seasonal timetables, weather-dependent | Positano to Amalfi by sea |
| Elly8.net driver | US$90 to US$180 an hour, 3-hour minimum, fixed | Booked ahead | Evenings out, sightseeing days, groups, families |
Local taxis on the coast
Local taxis are the most flexible on-the-day option, and for short rides they are often the right one. What to know:
- Book through the hotel. Reception desks know the local drivers. In high season, cars at the stands can be few, and late in the evening fewer still.
- Confirm the fare first. We could not find a published official taxi tariff for the coast towns online, unlike Naples, whose tariff is public. Ask whether the ride is on the meter or at an agreed price, and agree it before you get in.
- Ask for a larger car if you need one. A family with suitcases should say so when booking, so the right vehicle is sent.
For a ten-minute ride, such as Amalfi up to Ravello, about 7 km (4 mi) and roughly 9 minutes on a clear road by our routed estimate, a local taxi is the sensible choice. For a dinner forty minutes away, with a late return, the question becomes whether a car will be free when you finish.
What the Naples taxi fares tell you about the arrival
The longest taxi ride of most coast stays is the arrival from Naples, and here the fares are published. The Comune di Napoli's official taxi tariff sheet, approved in June 2024, sets fixed one-way fares per car from Naples of €145 to Positano, €155 to Amalfi and €160 to Ravello. They include the airport, night, holiday and luggage supplements, but not motorway tolls, and a €5 minivan supplement applies for more than four passengers. You must ask for the fixed fare when the ride starts.
An Elly8.net car from Naples Airport to Positano is fixed at US$280 in a Business Sedan, US$365 in a Business SUV and US$730 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle, with meet and greet inside arrivals, flight tracking and standard gratuity included. For two people with light bags who are happy to walk to the rank, the official taxi is the cheaper choice. Our guide to the taxi from Naples to Sorrento covers the fixed fares in more detail.
Uber on the Amalfi Coast
Uber's own list of Italian cities includes Napoli but not Positano, Amalfi, Ravello, Praiano or Sorrento. Even where the app works in Italy, rides come from licensed professionals, premium hire cars or taxis requested through the app, not private motorists, so there is no cheap app tier to fall back on. On the coast, plan around taxis, buses, boats and booked cars. See chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft for the general comparison.
The alternating-plate rule, and why it favours licensed drivers
The coast road, the SS163 Amalfitana, has a summer traffic restriction. Under an ANAS ordinance extended by the coast municipalities, private cars may not use the road between 10:00 and 18:00 on restricted days if the last digit of their plate is even on even dates or odd on odd dates. The Comune di Praiano published the 2026 calendar: every day in August and September, weekends and holidays in June, July and October, and every day from 30 March to 6 April and from 25 April to 2 May, ending on 31 October 2026.
Taxis and NCC hire cars with drivers are exempt, along with residents and some others. A rental car can be barred on half the days of a summer week; a licensed driver can run every day. That is a strong argument against renting a car for the coast in season, and for a taxi or a booked driver instead. The 2027 calendar had not been published at the time of writing; check the coast municipalities' notices before you travel. See chauffeur vs renting a car.
The SITA buses
The regional bus company SITA SUD runs the coast road services linking the Sorrento peninsula, Positano, Amalfi and the towns between. Its website posts notices for the coast, including a new timetable for the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento peninsula routes from 2 November 2026 and a fare adjustment from 1 October 2026; check the current timetable and fares there.
The bus is the budget way along the coast and a good one for a light traveller in the morning. In summer it is often full, standing on a cliff road with bends is not for everyone, and luggage is a struggle. For a day hop with a small bag, take it; for a hotel move with suitcases, do not.
The ferries
On the water, Travelmar runs fast ferries between the coast's ports, including Positano and Amalfi, with timetables and fares on its site. By sea, Positano to Amalfi avoids the road altogether and is one of the loveliest trips on the coast. Ferries are seasonal and depend on the weather, so they work best by day with a plan B. Positano to Amalfi by road is about 16 km (10 mi), roughly 23 minutes on a clear road, and often far slower in summer.
Trip by trip: what we would choose
| Trip | Road distance and clear-road time | Our pick |
|---|---|---|
| Amalfi to Ravello | about 7 km / 4 mi, about 9 min (routed estimate) | Local taxi, or the bus by day |
| Positano to Praiano | about 8 km / 5 mi, about 12 min (routed estimate) | Local taxi |
| Positano to Amalfi by day | about 16 km / 10 mi, about 23 min | Ferry, weather permitting |
| Positano to dinner in Ravello | about 23 km / 14 mi, about 31 min | Evening package with a waiting driver |
| A sightseeing day along the coast | several stops | Highlights tour or hourly driver |
| Positano to Sorrento for the Capri boat | about 18 km / 11 mi to the harbour, about 25 min | Pre-booked transfer |
| Naples Airport to Positano | about 62 km / 38 mi, about 70 min | Taxi at €145, or a booked car from US$280 |
Dinner in Ravello. Ravello sits above Amalfi on a narrow, steep road. Getting there is easy; finding a car back at 11 p.m. is the risk. The evening out and event night package, from US$450 in a business sedan and US$575 in a business SUV up to US$900 in a Sprinter, keeps the chauffeur with you. The chauffeur follows local rules on passengers and alcohol. See event transportation.
A day along the coast. The private highlights tour, from US$360 in a business sedan to US$720 in a Sprinter, or an hourly chauffeur at US$90 an hour, stops where you choose, such as Positano's viewpoints, Furore, Amalfi's cathedral square and Ravello's gardens. A full-day chauffeur costs from US$665. See private city tours.
Capri. Cars are not allowed on Capri, so the driver's job ends at the harbour. Our guide to Capri taxis, apps and private cars explains the island's taxi fares and how to plan the crossing.
A sample three days in Positano
To show how the options combine, here is a typical short stay we plan for a couple from the US. Day one: a booked car from Naples Airport to the hotel, US$280 in a business sedan, with the chauffeur waiting in arrivals after a connecting flight. Day two: the morning ferry from Positano to Amalfi, a local taxi up to Ravello for the gardens, and the bus or a taxi back down; no booked car needed. Day three: the evening out package for dinner in Ravello, with the chauffeur waiting, then on the last morning a transfer to Sorrento's harbour for the boat to Capri. The booked car does the three jobs where timing and luggage matter, and the cheaper options do the rest.
When the taxi, bus or ferry is the better choice
- Short hops such as Amalfi to Ravello or Positano to Praiano are local-taxi territory.
- A sunny day between Positano and Amalfi is best by ferry.
- A light traveller on a budget can use the SITA bus for most daytime trips.
- Two people arriving from Naples with light bags do well with the official €145 taxi fare to Positano.
When a pre-booked driver wins
- Late evenings, when the buses have stopped and local taxis are busy.
- Families and groups: a Business SUV or First Class SUV carries six passengers and six bags, an Executive Sprinter twelve and twelve, and child seats are fitted on request.
- Fixed times: dinner reservations, ferry departures, a wedding in Ravello.
- Sightseeing days with several stops, where calling a new car at each one wastes the day.
- A fixed price in US dollars, agreed before you travel.
Rides on the Amalfi Coast and in Naples are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. For weddings, see wedding transportation.

Frequently asked questions
Is there Uber on the Amalfi Coast?
Uber's list of Italian cities includes Napoli but not Positano, Amalfi, Ravello or Sorrento, so do not plan on the app. On the coast, use local taxis, the SITA buses, the ferries or a pre-booked driver. In Italy, app rides come from licensed professionals rather than private motorists.
How much is a taxi from Naples to Positano?
The Comune di Napoli's official tariff sets a fixed one-way fare of €145 per car from Naples to Positano, including airport, night, holiday and luggage supplements. Motorway tolls are extra, and €5 is added for a minivan. Ask for the fixed fare at the start of the ride.
Are taxis affected by the alternating-plate rule?
No. Under the ordinance as published for 2026 by the Comune di Praiano, taxis and NCC licensed hire cars with drivers are exempt from the alternating-plate restriction on the SS163. Private cars, including rentals, are limited between 10:00 and 18:00 on restricted days.
How do I get a taxi in Positano?
Ask your hotel to book one, or find a car at a taxi stand. In summer, demand is high and cars can be scarce, especially late in the evening, so book ahead for anything time-sensitive and agree the fare before you set off.
Is the ferry or a car better between Positano and Amalfi?
By day in good weather, the ferry: it avoids the cliff road and the views are the point. In the evening, in poor weather or with luggage, a car. The road is about 16 km (10 mi), roughly 23 minutes on a clear road, and slower in summer.
What does a private driver cost on the Amalfi Coast?
From US$90 an hour in a business sedan to US$180 in an Executive Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum. The evening out package starts at US$450, the highlights tour at US$360 and a full-day chauffeur at US$665, all per vehicle and fixed.
