In Barcelona you can book a ride three ways: a rideshare app such as Uber, Cabify or Bolt, a licensed metropolitan taxi from the street, a rank or an app, or a pre-booked chauffeur. For a short hop on a normal afternoon, the taxi meter is usually the simplest and cheapest: €2.80 to start and €1.35 a kilometre on weekdays in 2026. Apps price each trip by demand. A pre-booked Elly8.net car is a fixed price per vehicle, from US$85 an hour in the city or US$105 from the airport.
Which to book depends on the trip, not on loyalty to one option. This guide sets out the verified taxi tariff, how app prices behave, the moments when every option struggles, and a fair verdict for the trips visitors actually make, from the Eixample to Fira Gran Via, the Camp Nou and the waterfront.
Uber, taxi or private car in Barcelona: which is best?
For short city trips on normal days, a metered taxi is usually best: €2.80 plus €1.35 per km on weekdays. Apps suit travellers who like app booking, at prices that move with demand. A pre-booked chauffeur is best for airport arrivals with luggage, groups, MWC week, event nights and days of meetings, at a fixed price per vehicle.
All three are legal, licensed and widely used. The differences are in how the price is set, how quickly a car appears when the city is busy, and how much of the day the car can cover. For a North American visitor, the biggest adjustment is that the regulated taxi, not the app, is the default local choice: it is cheap for short rides, easy to find in the Eixample and on the main avenues, and priced by a tariff anyone can read.
Rides booked through Elly8.net in Barcelona are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk.

How each option sets its price
The taxi. Barcelona's metropolitan taxis follow tariffs published by the Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona for 2026 (AMB, taxi fares). Tariff T-1 applies on weekdays from 8:00 to 20:00: a €2.80 minimum fare plus €1.35 per kilometre, or €27.75 an hour when the car is waiting in traffic. Tariff T-2, on weekday evenings and nights, Saturdays and public holidays, keeps the €2.80 start but charges €1.66 per kilometre. Fixed supplements apply for the airport and the Moll Adossat cruise dock (€4.60 each), for rides starting at Fira Barcelona Gran Via (€3.30) or Sants station (€2.55), and for vehicles carrying five to eight passengers (€4.60).
The taxi booked by app at a fixed price. The AMB also allows a fixed-price tariff, T-3, booked only through approved taxi mediation apps, with a minimum of €8. The app calculates the price from the same tariff elements and real traffic, and the meter reads zero during the ride.
The rideshare app. App prices are not a published tariff. Each trip is quoted when you request it, and demand at that moment is part of the calculation. We do not quote app prices, because any number would be out of date.
The pre-booked chauffeur. Elly8.net publishes fixed prices per vehicle, agreed when you reserve and charged in US dollars: airport transfers, hourly hire, evenings out, city tours and day trips. Tolls and parking are billed at cost.
Real trips, real taxi numbers
The taxi meter charges for time as well as distance, so these are floors, not quotes: simple arithmetic on the 2026 T-1 weekday tariff, using our routed distances, with no waiting time added.
| Trip | Routed distance | Clear-road drive | Taxi, distance only (T-1) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Passeig de Gràcia to the Sagrada Família | 2.4 km / 1.5 mi | about 5 min | about €6 |
| Passeig de Gràcia to Park Güell | 3.7 km / 2.3 mi | about 10 min | about €8 |
| Passeig de Gràcia to the Camp Nou | 4.8 km / 3.0 mi | about 9 min | about €9 |
| Passeig de Gràcia to the Port Olímpic | 4.4 km / 2.7 mi | about 9 min | about €9 |
| Sants station to the Port Olímpic | 6.9 km / 4.3 mi | about 14 min | about €15 with the Sants supplement |
| Fira Gran Via to Passeig de Gràcia | 6.7 km / 4.2 mi | about 12 min | about €15 with the Fira supplement |
Two lessons follow. Inside the city, taxis are inexpensive, and no pre-booked car competes on price for a solo hop. And the cost that hurts is not the meter but the wait: for a taxi at closing time at Fira, for a car after a concert, for an app car in the rain.
When the app is a good choice
Rideshare apps work well in Barcelona for travellers who like booking by app, paying through an account they already have, and seeing the car approach on a map. They are a good fit for:
- Flexible city trips at quiet times, when a car is nearby and prices are calm.
- Travellers without euros who prefer to pay through the app.
- Requesting a licensed taxi through the app instead of a private-hire car, which Uber's app also offers in Barcelona.
At the airport, Aena designates app pickup points: Uber riders meet their driver at set points in Terminal 1 and at the T2 express car parks, and Cabify and Bolt have their own points, as listed on the Aena page for vehicles for hire. Read it before you land if you plan to use one.
Practical tips for app rides in Barcelona
If you choose an app, a few local habits make it smoother:
- Check what you are booking. Some apps show both private-hire cars and taxis. Read the product name and the total before you confirm.
- Choose a pickup the car can reach. Much of the Gothic Quarter and El Born is pedestrian or restricted, and the narrow streets of Gràcia are slow. Walk to Via Laietana, a corner of the Eixample grid or a wide avenue, and set the pin there.
- Do not stand at a taxi rank. The AMB rules do not let taxis pick up passengers within 50 metres of a rank, and app cars stopping there block the queue. Move a little way along the street.
- Plan event exits before the event. After a match or a concert, agree in your group where you will walk to before you request a car.
- Keep an eye on the clock at the airport. At El Prat, each app has its own pickup point, and finding it with luggage takes time after a long flight.
None of these are reasons to avoid the apps. They are the difference between a five-minute pickup and a twenty-minute one on a busy evening.
When the taxi is the better call
Barcelona's taxis are plentiful, regulated and easy to use. The AMB says a taxi with a green light is free to hire, and that corners are the best place to flag one down (AMB, hailing a taxi). There are more than 300 signed ranks across the metropolitan area, most of them in Barcelona itself. Our Barcelona taxi guide covers ranks, waits, payment and receipts in detail.
Take the taxi for:
- Short hops in the Eixample, the Gothic Quarter, Gràcia and the waterfront.
- Two people with light bags, at any normal hour.
- Rides where price certainty matters but you did not plan ahead, because the tariff cannot surge.
When a pre-booked car wins
A pre-booked chauffeur costs more than a short taxi ride. It wins in specific situations, and it is worth being exact about them.
Arrivals with luggage, children or a group. A transfer from El Prat to Passeig de Gràcia costs from US$105 in a Business Sedan, US$140 in a Business SUV and US$275 in an Executive Sprinter, with the chauffeur inside arrivals holding a name board. A Business SUV carries six passengers and six large bags; an Executive Sprinter carries twelve and twelve. Child seats are fitted before pickup when you give the ages. See Barcelona airport transfers.
MWC and trade-fair weeks. MWC Barcelona 2027 runs from 1 to 4 March 2027 at Fira Gran Via, according to the GSMA's MWC site. In that week and others like it, hotels fill, ranks at Fira overload at closing time, and app prices respond to demand. A car by the hour, US$85 in a Business Sedan, US$110 in a Business SUV or US$170 in an Executive Sprinter, 3-hour minimum, waits near your hall. See conference transportation.
Event nights. A match at the Camp Nou, a concert at the Palau Sant Jordi on Montjuïc, or Primavera Sound at the Parc del Fòrum, usually in early June, all send crowds to the same streets at once. The evening out and event night package costs from US$425 in a Business Sedan to US$850 in a Sprinter, with the car waiting at an agreed point. See concert and festival transportation and event transportation.
Days, not trips. A day of meetings on the Diagonal and in 22@, or a shopping day with bags, works better with one car held as directed than with six separate rides. The corporate roadshow day costs from US$765 in a Business Sedan to US$1,530 in a Sprinter.
Cruise turnarounds. On embarkation and disembarkation days, taxi demand at the port and the airport peaks together. The fixed taxi tariff between the airport and the Moll Adossat is €46; a pre-booked SUV or Sprinter handles a week's luggage for a family. See cruise port transfers.
Uber Black, premium apps and a chauffeur
Premium app categories and a pre-booked First Class Sedan overlap: both are professional drivers in better cars. The pre-booked car fixes the price, the vehicle class and the meeting point in advance, includes standard gratuity, and can be booked on account with monthly invoicing. The app quotes each trip at the moment of booking. The full argument is on Uber Black vs a pre-booked chauffeur and chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft.
Barcelona's low-emission zone
The ZBE Rondes de Barcelona restricts vehicles without the national environmental label inside the ring roads on working days, Monday to Friday, from 7:00 to 20:00, with a €200 fine for breaches, according to the Ajuntament de Barcelona. It matters if you rent a car. It does not affect you in a taxi, an app car or a chauffeured car; partner vehicles are four model years old or newer and the partner handles compliance.
The verdict, trip by trip
| Trip | Our pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Eixample to the Sagrada Família, two people | Taxi | A few euros on the meter |
| El Prat arrival, family of five with cases | Elly8.net Business SUV, from US$140 | Six seats, six bags, child seats fitted |
| MWC meeting day | Car by the hour, from US$85 | Waits at your hall, no closing-time queue |
| Camp Nou match night | Pre-booked car or metro | Crowds overwhelm ranks and apps at the whistle |
| Late dinner in El Born, couple | Taxi or app | Short ride, plentiful cars |
| Cruise embarkation, group of eight | Executive Sprinter, from US$275 from the airport | Twelve seats and twelve bags |
| Solo traveller, carry-on, airport | Metro L9 Sud or Aerobús | Cheapest, reliable |
The metro is a real option too. The TMB Airport ticket for line L9 Sud costs €5.90, and a single metro ticket in the city €2.90 (TMB fares). For one person with a carry-on, it is hard to beat.

Frequently asked questions
Is Uber available in Barcelona?
Yes. Uber operates in Barcelona alongside other apps such as Cabify and Bolt, and the apps can also request licensed taxis. At El Prat, Aena lists designated pickup points for each app. Prices are quoted per trip and move with demand, so compare the quote with the taxi meter before you confirm.
Is a taxi cheaper than Uber in Barcelona?
For short city trips at normal times, the taxi is usually the cheaper and simpler choice, because its tariff is fixed by the AMB: €2.80 plus €1.35 per km on weekdays, €1.66 per km at night and weekends. Taxis cannot surge. App prices vary trip by trip.
Can I pre-book a taxi at a fixed price in Barcelona?
Yes, through approved taxi apps using the T-3 fixed-price tariff, which has an €8 minimum and is calculated from the official tariff and real traffic. A pre-booked Elly8.net car is also fixed, from US$105 from El Prat to Passeig de Gràcia, with meet and greet.
What is the best option during MWC?
A car by the hour, booked early. MWC Barcelona 2027 runs from 1 to 4 March 2027 at Fira Gran Via, and ranks and apps struggle at closing time. Elly8.net hourly hire costs from US$85 in a Business Sedan, 3-hour minimum, with the chauffeur waiting near your hall.
How do we get a group of eight around Barcelona?
One Executive Sprinter, which carries twelve passengers and twelve large bags, at a fixed price per vehicle: from US$275 from the airport or US$170 an hour, 3-hour minimum. Taxis carrying five to eight passengers add a €4.60 supplement, and a large group may need two cars.
Do rideshare and taxis work for the Camp Nou?
Before the match, yes. After the final whistle, crowds overwhelm nearby ranks and app cars. Either walk to the metro or pre-book a car with an agreed pickup point away from the stadium. The evening out package costs from US$425 in a Business Sedan.
