Uber is available on Mykonos, but only as Uber Taxi. According to Uber's Mykonos page, the app lets you request local taxis on the island, every ride is operated by a fully licensed taxi driver, and you can pay by card or PayPal through the app. There is no separate fleet of private app cars waiting in the hills. When you open Uber on Mykonos, you are asking for one of the same taxis that work the ranks in town and at the airport.
That single fact explains most of what visitors experience. On a quiet afternoon in June, the app is a convenient way to call a taxi and pay without cash. On an August evening, when several flights have landed, the beach clubs are emptying and dinner traffic is heading into town, the app is competing for the same small number of cars as everyone at the rank. A pre-booked Elly8.net transfer from Mykonos Island National Airport (JMK) to Mykonos Town costs from US$115 in a business sedan to US$300 in an Executive Sprinter, fixed per vehicle and charged in US dollars. This guide sets out when each option makes sense.
Does Uber work in Mykonos?
Yes, through Uber Taxi. Uber's Mykonos page says the app requests local licensed taxis, 24/7, with card or PayPal payment. Because it dispatches the island's existing taxis rather than private cars, availability depends on how many taxis are free, and Uber itself suggests another option if none is available when you request.
The page sets out how it works: open the app, enter pickup and drop-off, select Taxi, and you are matched with a licensed taxi driver. It lists taxis for up to four riders and larger vehicles, and its FAQ says taxis requested through the app on Mykonos carry up to six passengers. It also answers the question every visitor asks in August: if no taxis are available at the time you request, consider another ride option in the app.
What the app does not change is the supply of cars. It is a different way of reaching the same taxis, with the advantages of in-app payment, a tip option and trip sharing, but not more vehicles at the busiest hour. For North American visitors used to an app that finds a car within minutes almost anywhere, that is the adjustment to make before arriving: on Mykonos, the app is a booking channel for taxis, not a guarantee of one.

Mykonos taxis: the facts that matter
The Municipality of Mykonos transport page is frank about the island's taxis: they are clearly the most restful way to get around, and also the most expensive, with fares that depend on the distance travelled. It lists two taxi ranks, one in Chora in front of the OTE building and one at Fabrika on the other side of town, where the buses to the southern beaches start, and two 24-hour taxi numbers.
At the airport, Mykonos Airport's taxi page says taxi service is available and the stand is outside the arrivals building. The airport is close to town, about 5 km (3 mi) by road and roughly 8 minutes on a clear road, so the ride itself is short. The question is how long you wait at the stand first.
"Surge" on Mykonos is really about waiting
In cities with large app fleets, busy moments mean higher prices. On Mykonos, the visible effect of demand is the queue. When the taxis are all on the road, an app request and the rank both mean waiting until a car comes back. The predictable pinch points are:
- Arrival waves at JMK. In high season several flights can land close together, and every passenger walks out to the same taxi stand at once.
- Ferry arrivals at the new port. A large ferry landing at Tourlos puts a crowd of passengers on the quay at the same moment. The new port is about 3 km (2 mi) north of town.
- Late afternoon on the south coast. Beach-club traffic heading back from Psarou, Platys Gialos and Paradise meets dinner traffic heading into town.
- After midnight. Returns from Chora's bars and the clubs to villas spread across the island.
For a solo traveller staying in town, these are inconveniences with workarounds, and the bus is often the answer. For a family with five suitcases heading to a hillside villa, or a group of eight leaving a beach club at sunset, they are the moments a booking made weeks ahead pays for itself.
Buses and the sea bus: the budget options
The island's KTEL bus network is the cheapest way around. The municipality lists three bus terminals in town: Fabrika for the southern beaches, the square behind the OTE building for Ano Mera, Kalafatis and Elia, and the stop beside the old port for the new port at Tourlos and Agios Stefanos. It also notes that in peak season buses run to the busiest destinations until 04:00. Timetables are on the Mykonos Bus site.
Between the two harbours, the municipality runs a sea bus from the old port to the new port every 30 minutes for €2, with luggage allowed, as set out on the same transport page. For a light traveller staying in town, these options are good, and we would recommend them. With large suitcases and a villa at the end of the journey, they stop being practical.
Uber, taxi or pre-booked: side by side
| Option | Price | What happens at the busiest moments | Best for |

What the pre-booked alternative costs
Elly8.net publishes fixed prices for Mykonos, per vehicle and charged in US dollars, including the chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet. Parking is billed at cost. Airport fares are the same in either direction.
| Booking | Business Sedan | Business SUV | First Class Sedan | First Class SUV | Executive Sprinter |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| JMK to Mykonos Town | US$115 | US$150 | US$205 | US$185 | US$300 |
| JMK round trip | US$220 | US$285 | US$390 | US$355 | US$570 |

Villas and hotels outside town are quoted instantly in the web booker at a fixed price with the same inclusions. Booking the round trip at the same time secures the car for your departure day before the island fills up.
When the pre-booked car is worth it
- Arriving on a busy flight. The chauffeur tracks your flight and waits at arrivals with a name board; waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary. If you miss the connection in Athens, the 24/7 desk moves the pickup to the next flight. See airport transfers.
- Villas on narrow roads. Many villas sit on steep, narrow roads. A Business SUV or First Class SUV is the usual villa car, with six seats and six large bags. Before confirming an Executive Sprinter, the desk checks the address with the local partner, and where a van cannot reach the door, we say so.
- Ferry arrivals. Send the ferry operator and time, and the chauffeur meets you at the right port; see cruise and ferry port transfers.
- Nights out. The evening out package, from US$450 in a business sedan, keeps a car on call for dinner in Little Venice, the bars and the drive home, with the chauffeur following local rules on everything inside the vehicle. See event transportation.
- Groups. Eight friends need two taxis at best; one Executive Sprinter at US$300 from the airport carries twelve passengers and twelve bags, where the road allows. See group transportation.
- Child seats. Ask when you book, give the children's ages, and the partner fits them before pickup.
If you use the app on Mykonos: practical tips
Request from a road, not a lane. Chora's paved lanes are footpaths, so taxis stop at the edge of town, around the old port and the Fabrika area. Walk to one of those points before you request, or the driver cannot reach you.
Give a villa's exact pin. Villa addresses outside town can be hard to find at night. Drop the pin at the villa gate and add a note with the villa's name; many hillside roads look alike in the dark.
Plan beach-club returns early. Request before the sunset rush rather than at the moment everyone leaves, or agree a pickup time with a pre-booked car in advance.
Keep a backup. Save the two 24-hour taxi numbers the municipality publishes in your phone, and know where the nearest bus stop is. If the app shows no taxis, the rank or the bus may still get you home.
Departure day: the trip to plan first
The airport is close, but the drive out on a summer evening is when cars are hardest to find, and missing a flight to Athens can unravel a long-haul connection home. This is the trip we would pre-book even for travellers who use taxis the rest of the week. A round trip booked with your arrival, from US$220 in a business sedan, settles both legs before you land. Set the pickup from the villa rather than from town, and allow generous time at the terminal, more for a long-haul connection than for a flight within Europe. The desk suggests a pickup time when you book.
When the app or a taxi is the better choice
We would not book a chauffeur for every trip on Mykonos. A couple staying in Chora, walking to dinner and taking a taxi or the bus to a beach on a quiet morning, does not need one. Neither does a light traveller with a backpack arriving off-peak, who can walk out to the stand or take the bus into town. Uber Taxi is a sensible way to pay a taxi by card without cash. The pre-booked car is for the trips where waiting, luggage, timing or group size make the difference. Our companion guide, Mykonos taxi vs Uber vs private car, works through each kind of trip on the island.
Booking and cancellation
- Pickup and drop-off. Enter JMK and the flight that lands on Mykonos, the port and your ferry, or your villa.
- Vehicle. Choose by passengers and large bags; the fleet page lists seats and luggage, and the desk confirms the vehicle suits the address.
- Reserve. Published fares go straight to checkout in US$, and any other address goes through the web booker at a fixed price. Confirmation arrives by email.
Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup; 10% applies at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show, refunded to the original card.
Rides in Mykonos are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. For a day around the island, see our Mykonos day tours with a private driver. Coming from mainland Europe? Our guide to Uber in Seville shows how differently app rides work in a large city. Most trips pass through Athens, and many continue to Santorini; the same desk covers both. Our general comparison of chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft explains the wider trade-offs.
Frequently asked questions
Is there Uber in Mykonos?
Yes, as Uber Taxi. The Uber app on Mykonos requests the island's licensed taxis, 24/7, with card or PayPal payment through the app. It does not add a separate fleet of private cars, so availability depends on how many island taxis are free at the time.
How much is a taxi from Mykonos airport to town?
Island taxi fares depend on the distance travelled, according to the Municipality of Mykonos, and the airport is about 5 km (3 mi) from town. A pre-booked Elly8.net transfer costs from US$115 in a business sedan to US$300 in an Executive Sprinter, fixed per vehicle.
Why is it hard to get a taxi in Mykonos in summer?
Demand peaks together: arrival waves at the airport, ferries landing at the new port, beach-club traffic in the late afternoon and returns after midnight. The app and the rank draw on the same taxis, so at those moments the wait grows. Pre-booking avoids the queue.
Can a group of eight travel together on Mykonos?
Yes. An Executive Sprinter carries up to twelve passengers and twelve bags, costing US$300 from the airport to town. Many villa roads are narrow, so the desk checks the address with the local partner first and offers two SUVs or a nearby meeting point where a van cannot reach.
Is the bus a good option on Mykonos?
For one traveller with light bags staying in town or going to a beach, yes. The KTEL network runs from three terminals in town and, in peak season, to the busiest destinations until 04:00. With heavy luggage or a villa on a hillside road, a car is far easier.
What is the cancellation policy?
Free cancellation more than 72 hours before pickup. A 10% fee applies at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show. Refunds go to the original card.
