Uber is present in Naples, not on the Amalfi Coast itself. Uber runs a city guide for Napoli and a page for Naples International Airport (NAP), but its directory of Italian cities has no page for Positano, Amalfi, Ravello or Sorrento. In practice that means an app ride to the coast usually starts at the airport or in Naples, and a ride back from a cliffside hotel depends on whether a driver happens to be nearby on a road that is an hour or more from the city.
The fair comparison is therefore not Uber against a chauffeur, but four options: the app, a licensed Naples taxi on the city's fixed fares, the bus, and a pre-booked car. Naples taxis charge €145 per car from the city to Positano under the official tariff, which is less than an Elly8.net transfer. An Elly8.net car from Naples Airport to Positano costs from US$280 in a business sedan, fixed and charged in US dollars before you fly. This guide sets out when each is the right choice.
Can you use Uber on the Amalfi Coast?
You can open Uber in Naples and at Naples Airport, where it offers Reserve, upfront prices and larger vehicles. Uber has no city pages for Positano, Amalfi, Ravello or Sorrento, so pickups on the coast are uncertain. For the coast itself, plan on a licensed taxi, the SITA bus, ferries or a pre-booked car.
Uber's airport pickup page for Naples explains how the app works at NAP: you request after landing, the app gives directions to the pickup point, locations may vary, and you can reserve up to 90 days ahead to lock in a price. Its luggage guidance for NAP points travellers with bags towards the Black and Van options rather than a standard car.
The list of Italian cities on Uber's site is the clearest signal of where the app is set up. Naples is on it, along with Rome, Milan, Florence and Venice. The coast towns are not. That does not mean an app ride to Positano is impossible, only that you should not plan a holiday around one.

Why the coast does not behave like a city
The Amalfi Coast is a string of small towns on one cliff road. Positano, the reference point for our fares, is about 62 km (38 mi) from Naples Airport, roughly 70 minutes on a clear road. From Positano, Amalfi is about 16 km (10 mi) further east and Ravello about 7 km (5 mi) above Amalfi, by our routed estimates on the public OSRM network. Distances are short, but every car on the coast shares the same narrow road with tour buses and scooters.
For an app, that shape is the problem. Drivers concentrate where demand is dense, which in Campania means Naples. A request from a hotel above Positano may have no car nearby, or a car an hour away in the city, and the trip has to be worth the empty drive out. Uber's own NAP page warns that early and late flights may mean longer driver arrival times; on the coast, that gap is the whole story.
Two more local rules shape any ride. Under the ANAS ordinance as published for 2026 by the Comune di Praiano, private cars are kept off the coast road on alternating dates between 10.00 and 18.00 on restricted days, with taxis and NCC (Italy's licensed hire cars with driver) exempt. And in Italy, hire cars with driver are booked in advance rather than hailed: Aeroporti di Roma states that NCC services must be requested in advance and are not taken from the taxi rank.
How Uber prices move in Naples
Where Uber operates, its non-taxi tiers use demand-based pricing: the upfront fare reflects distance, time and how busy the area is. A Friday evening, a cluster of arrivals at Capodichino or a big event in the city all push the price up. Uber does not publish fixed fares for NAP routes, and we do not invent one here.
The app does offer a way to fix the price. Uber says that with Reserve you can book an airport pickup up to 90 days ahead, lock in your price and avoid surge pricing, and cancel free until one hour before pickup or until a driver accepts. That makes a reserved app ride from NAP a reasonable plan for travellers comfortable with the app, provided the trip is from the airport, not from a hotel on the cliffs on a Sunday night.
Naples taxis: fixed fares set by the city
The option most visitors overlook is the licensed Naples taxi. The City of Naples publishes a tariff sheet, in force since 1 September 2024 and linked from its taxi service page, with fixed one-way fares per car from the city to destinations outside it. The fixed fares include the airport supplement, night and holiday surcharges, luggage and animals; motorway tolls and a €5 supplement for a minivan (for more than four passengers, or on request) are extra.
| From Naples, fixed taxi fare per car | Fare |
|---|---|
| Pompeii archaeological site | €70 |
| Sorrento | €125 |
| Positano | €145 |
| Amalfi | €155 |
| Ravello | €160 |
| Naples Airport to Molo Beverello port | €24 |
| Naples Airport to Stazione Centrale | €21 |
The city's rules say the passenger must ask for the fixed fare at the start of the ride, the driver may not refuse it, and a receipt with the route and amount is issued before departure. Ask for the "tariffa predeterminata" before you set off.
Uber, taxi, bus or a pre-booked car: the comparison
| Option | Price to Positano | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uber from Naples or NAP | Demand-based; fixed only with Reserve | App request or Reserve, pickup point shown in the app | App users leaving from the airport |
| Naples licensed taxi | €145 per car, fixed city fare | Rank or radio taxi; ask for the fixed fare first | Two to four travellers leaving from Naples |
| Airport shuttle bus | €20 per person (operator's fare) | Scheduled coach from the airport bus parking area | Solo travellers with time |
| Elly8.net business sedan | US$280 per vehicle, fixed | Name board in arrivals, flight tracked | Couples who want the price agreed in US$ |
| Elly8.net Executive Sprinter | US$730 per vehicle, fixed | Name board in arrivals | Groups of up to 12 with luggage |
The bus fare is the one published by Curreri, the private operator of the scheduled airport coach to Sorrento and Positano, which lists €13 to Sorrento and €20 to Positano. Prices for every Elly8.net class are on the Amalfi Coast fares panel.
When the taxi or the app is the better call. If you are two or three travellers leaving from central Naples or the airport with ordinary bags, the city's fixed taxi fare of €145 to Positano is honest value and costs less than our business sedan. If you live in the Uber app and land at a sensible hour, a reserved ride from NAP is a reasonable choice. For a solo traveller with a backpack and an afternoon to spare, the coach is cheapest of all.
When a pre-booked car is the better call. A family arriving on an overnight flight with car seats, a stroller and four large cases. A group of seven who want one vehicle, not two taxis. A late landing after the last coach. A return from a hotel in Praiano or Ravello to catch an early flight, when you cannot afford to find out at 5 am that no car is nearby. A dinner in Ravello on a restricted plate day. And any traveller who wants the fare fixed in US dollars weeks before leaving home. Our chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft and Uber Black vs a pre-booked chauffeur comparisons cover the trade-offs in more depth.
Getting around once you are on the coast
Between the towns, you will rarely need an app. The SITA Sud buses run the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento peninsula lines, and the company publishes timetable changes by season; it announced a new coast timetable from 2 November 2026. Ferries link Positano, Amalfi, Sorrento and Salerno in season, and Travelmar gives the Positano to Amalfi crossing as about 25 minutes. Boats are often the most pleasant way between Positano and Amalfi when the sea is calm.
Where a car still earns its place is the evening and the awkward hop: Ravello's concerts and restaurants are up a steep road from Amalfi, and the last buses do not wait for dessert. The evening out and event night package costs from US$450 in a business sedan to US$900 in an Executive Sprinter, with the car on standby. For a day of stops at your own pace, car service by the hour costs from US$90 an hour in a business sedan, 3-hour minimum, and our guide to an Amalfi Coast day trip with a private driver sets out three routes with timings.
Capri is a separate case. The island's official tourism site notes that non-resident vehicles may not be taken to Capri, so no app or chauffeur crosses with you; you reach it by hydrofoil or ferry from Naples or Sorrento. The road part is the transfer to the harbour, and a car that meets your boat on the way back is the piece most worth arranging ahead, because the boat times decide the day.
If you do use Uber to reach the coast
A few habits make an app ride to Positano smoother.
- Reserve from the airport, do not request on the coast. A reserved ride from NAP has a car committed before you land; a request from a hotel driveway depends on luck.
- Size up for luggage. Transatlantic suitcases fill a sedan's boot quickly; Uber itself points travellers with several bags to Van.
- Check the car and plate against the app. At any airport, ignore drivers who approach you in the terminal and use only the ride you booked.
- Give the exact hotel. Many Positano hotels are reached by steps from the road, and the drop-off point matters.
- Plan the return separately. The ride back to the airport is the one that goes wrong. Book it before you arrive, whichever option you choose.
How a fixed-price Elly8.net car works
Rides on the Amalfi Coast and in Naples are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. On the Amalfi Coast car service page, choose Naples Airport to Positano, enter your flight number and hotel, pick a vehicle and press Reserve now to pay by card in US$. The chauffeur tracks the flight and waits inside arrivals with a name board; waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary. For Amalfi, Ravello, Sorrento or a Naples address, the web booker returns a fixed price per vehicle before you pay.
Choose the vehicle by bags, using the fleet capacities: a business sedan carries three passengers and two bags, a business SUV six and six, an Executive Sprinter twelve and twelve. Fares include the chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet; tolls and parking are billed at cost. Airport fares are the same in either direction, so the hotel-to-NAP run on departure day is also from US$280, and a round trip booked together costs from US$535. See airport transfers and the cancellation policy: free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show.

Frequently asked questions
Does Uber work in Positano?
Uber has no city page for Positano, Amalfi, Ravello or Sorrento, though it covers Naples and Naples Airport. A request from the coast may find no nearby driver, especially early or late. Plan coast pickups with a licensed taxi, the SITA bus, a ferry or a pre-booked car rather than the app.
Is a Naples taxi cheaper than a private driver to Positano?
Usually, yes. The City of Naples sets a fixed taxi fare of €145 per car from the city to Positano, including the airport supplement and luggage, with tolls extra. An Elly8.net business sedan from Naples Airport costs US$280, fixed in US dollars, with a name board in arrivals and flight tracking.
Does Uber surge in Naples?
Uber's non-taxi tiers use demand-based pricing, so fares rise at busy times. Uber says Reserve lets you book an airport pickup up to 90 days ahead and lock the price, with free cancellation until one hour before pickup. An Elly8.net fare is fixed per vehicle when you book.
Can an Uber or taxi drive the coast road on restricted days?
The 2026 ANAS rules published by the Comune di Praiano exempt taxis and NCC licensed hire cars from the alternating-plate restriction on the SS163. Private cars, including rentals, are limited between 10.00 and 18.00 on restricted days, with hotel guests allowed only on check-in and check-out days.
What is the best way back to Naples Airport from the coast?
Book it before you arrive. A fixed Elly8.net transfer from Positano to NAP costs from US$280 in a business sedan and US$730 in an Executive Sprinter, the same as the arrival fare. Allow extra time in summer, when the coast road is slower than the clear-road estimate of about 70 minutes.
Is a pre-booked car worth it for a couple?
Not always. For a couple with light bags leaving from Naples, the €145 fixed taxi fare is good value. A pre-booked car makes more sense after a long flight, with child seats or heavy luggage, for late arrivals, or when you want a meeting inside arrivals and the price settled in US dollars.
