Getting from Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) to Venice is easy with a cabin bag and surprisingly hard with two large suitcases each. The reason is the city itself: beyond Piazzale Roma, the road terminus at the end of the causeway, there are no roads, only canals, water buses and footbridges, most of them with steps. Every route from the airport has to end with either a boat or a walk, and each one has its own rules about bags.
So the useful question is not just "bus, boat or car" but "how much luggage, and how far from Piazzale Roma is the hotel". This guide answers it with the operators' published fares and luggage rules, and says plainly which option suits which traveller.
How do you get to Venice from Marco Polo Airport?
By road to Piazzale Roma, then a boat or walk, or by water. The ATVO express bus takes about 20 minutes to Piazzale Roma, ACTV's Aerobus ticket costs €10, the Alilaguna water bus €18 per person with one large bag included, and a fixed Elly8.net car from US$120 per vehicle. Private water taxis go direct to many hotel landings.
Notice what is missing from that list. If you were planning to take a train from the airport, the routes that actually serve Piazzale Roma and the lagoon are by road and by water. Venezia Santa Lucia, the rail station facing the Grand Canal, sits right next to Piazzale Roma, so once you are at Piazzale Roma by bus or car a train adds nothing for the city. Rail matters when you are leaving Venice for another city, which is a different trip.
Where the luggage problem actually starts
Every road route from the airport ends at Piazzale Roma or Tronchetto. From there, three things can happen:
- Your hotel is close. Hotels near Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia, in parts of Santa Croce and Cannaregio, can be a short walk with bags. Short in distance; possibly with a bridge or two.
- You take the vaporetto. ACTV's water buses run along the Grand Canal and around the city. They have luggage rules, below, and they get crowded.
- You take a water taxi. A private launch from Piazzale Roma to your hotel landing, booked with a licensed operator.
Anything that lands you directly at your hotel door from the airport, which in practice only a private water taxi can do, avoids this step altogether. Everything else, including our cars, is about getting you and your suitcases to Piazzale Roma as smoothly as possible.
The bag rules, option by option
ACTV water buses and buses. AVM's general transport conditions say each passenger with a valid ticket may carry three items of baggage within a limit of 150 cm as the sum of the three dimensions, and that baggage over that limit is not permitted. Beyond the free allowance you buy one extra ticket for every three pieces. The crew may refuse luggage when the boat is crowded or when it threatens safety. The same rules apply on buses and water buses. Measure a large checked suitcase before you rely on the vaporetto; length, width and height add up quickly.
Alilaguna water bus. Alilaguna's fares page includes one heavy bag and one hand bag in each €18 one-way ticket, with €4 for each extra piece.
ATVO express bus. ATVO, the regional bus company, describes its express buses to Piazzale Roma as taking about 20 minutes, timed around major flight arrivals, with ample luggage space.
A car. Capacities from the Elly8.net fleet table: two bags in a Business Sedan or First Class Sedan, six in a Business SUV or First Class SUV, twelve in an Executive Sprinter. The chauffeur loads and unloads them.
Side by side, with luggage in mind
| Option | What you pay | Time | Luggage | Where it leaves you |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ATVO express bus | ATVO fare, per person | about 20 min to Piazzale Roma | Ample hold space, per ATVO | Piazzale Roma, then boat or walk |
| ACTV Aerobus ticket | €10, 75 minutes, per person | Road trip to the city | ACTV rules: three items within 150 cm total dimensions | Piazzale Roma, then boat or walk |
| ACTV Aerobus + navigation ticket | €18, 90 minutes, per person | Bus plus vaporetto | ACTV rules on both legs | A vaporetto stop near your hotel |
| Alilaguna water bus | €18 one way, per person | Longer, with stops | 1 large + 1 hand bag; €4 per extra piece | An Alilaguna stop in the city |
| Private water taxi | Per boat, set by the operator | Direct | Suitcases on board | Many hotel landings |
| Elly8.net business SUV | US$160 fixed, per vehicle | about 20 min clear road | 6 bags, loaded for you | Piazzale Roma, Tronchetto, Mestre or the Lido |
ACTV fares are from AVM's Venice urban services page, which lists the 75-minute Aerobus ticket at €10, the 90-minute Aerobus plus navigation ticket at €18 and the 75-minute single navigation ticket at €9.50.
What about Uber and rideshare apps?
Rideshare in Italy is not the same as at home. Italian law, Law 21 of 1992, recognises two kinds of non-scheduled car service, the licensed taxi and car hire with a professional driver, so any car an app finds you is one of those. Prices are set when you request, not ahead.
In Venice, there is a more basic limit: whatever app you use, the car stops where the road stops, at Piazzale Roma or Tronchetto. A rideshare car gives you no advantage over a taxi from the rank or a car booked ahead for the city itself. Where an app might help is for a mainland hotel in Mestre; where it cannot help is with the boat or the bridges. Our general comparison of a chauffeur against Uber and Lyft explains the wider trade-offs.
Which option for which traveller
One person, carry-on only, staying in the city. The ATVO bus or the Aerobus to Piazzale Roma, then the vaporetto or a walk. Cheap and quick.
A couple, one large suitcase each, hotel near an Alilaguna stop. The Alilaguna water bus, with each large bag included in the ticket. You arrive by water without changing at Piazzale Roma.
A couple, two large suitcases each, hotel on the Grand Canal with a landing. A private water taxi from the airport dock. Expensive, but it solves the luggage problem completely.
A family of five with five large suitcases. A Business SUV to Piazzale Roma, from US$160 fixed for the vehicle, then a water taxi for the short final leg. As arithmetic for comparison only, the same family on the Aerobus and vaporetto would be paying five €18 tickets, handling five suitcases against ACTV's size rules, on two crowded vehicles.
A group of seven to twelve. One Executive Sprinter, from US$315, with twelve seats and twelve bags; see group transportation.
Anyone staying in Mestre, Treviso or on the Lido. A car. It is the whole journey, and the most direct one.
Arriving late or with children
The luggage problem doubles when you are tired. A late landing after a connection, children asleep, a stroller and a car seat: this is where a car waiting in arrivals earns its fare. Give us the flight number and the chauffeur tracks the landing and waits with a name board; waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary. Child and booster seats are fitted on request before pickup; give the ages when you book.
At Piazzale Roma, the chauffeur unloads as close to the water as the square allows and helps with the bags. If you have booked a water taxi, give us the time and the car is timed to it. Elly8.net books the car only; book the boat with a licensed operator or through your hotel. Our guide to the water taxi from Marco Polo to Venice compares the launches and the Alilaguna lines in detail.
The departure day, in reverse
Leaving Venice with the same suitcases is the same puzzle backwards, with a flight time attached. The simplest plan for most travellers: a water taxi or the vaporetto from the hotel to Piazzale Roma, then a car to the airport, booked for the time the boat lands. The fixed fare is the same in either direction, from US$120 in a business sedan, and the chauffeur loads the bags at the square. Book it as an ordinary airport transfer.
If you are leaving Venice by train instead, Santa Lucia station is a short walk from Piazzale Roma, and at the other end a chauffeur can meet you on arrival; see train station transfers. For a broader look at when a booked car beats the taxi rank, our chauffeur vs taxi comparison sets out the general case.
Allow more time than you think. A crowded vaporetto may refuse large bags, and a water taxi needs booking ahead at busy times. Leaving a margin at Piazzale Roma costs nothing; missing a flight costs a great deal.
Treviso Airport, briefly
Some European flights use Treviso (TSF) instead. ATVO says its bus takes about 70 minutes from Treviso to Piazzale Roma. A fixed Elly8.net transfer takes roughly 42 minutes on a clear road over about 30 km (18 mi), from US$175 in a business sedan, US$230 in a business SUV and US$455 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle.
Packing for Venice: advice from the desk
- Pack for bridges. Two medium bags are easier than one huge one on steps and on the vaporetto.
- Measure your big suitcase. ACTV's limit is 150 cm as the sum of length, width and height.
- Ask the hotel two questions before you book. Does it have a water landing, and which vaporetto or Alilaguna stop is nearest? The answers decide whether the boat or the car-plus-boat route is easier.
- Plan the departure too. Leaving Venice is the same journey in reverse, at the same fixed fare in either direction.
Moving on after Venice? A car from Piazzale Roma is the natural start of a drive west, which our guide to Milan to Venice by car covers in the other direction, or of a day out on the mainland.

Frequently asked questions
What is the easiest way from Marco Polo to Venice with big suitcases?
For a hotel with a canal landing, a private water taxi from the airport dock. For everyone else, a car to Piazzale Roma followed by a short water taxi, or a car for the whole journey if you stay in Mestre or on the Lido. Elly8.net cars start at US$120 per vehicle.
How much luggage is allowed on the vaporetto?
AVM's transport conditions allow each passenger three items of baggage within 150 cm as the sum of the three dimensions; larger baggage is not permitted. Extra pieces need one ticket for every three. The crew may refuse luggage when the boat is crowded.
Is there a train from Marco Polo Airport into Venice?
The routes that serve Piazzale Roma and the lagoon from the airport are buses, boats and cars. Venezia Santa Lucia station is next to Piazzale Roma, so a train adds nothing once you are there. Use the train to leave Venice for another city.
Does Uber work from Marco Polo Airport?
App rides in Italy come from licensed taxis and car-hire-with-driver operators, and prices are set when you request. In Venice, any car stops at Piazzale Roma or Tronchetto, so an app has no advantage over a taxi or a booked car for the city.
How much is a private car from Marco Polo to Piazzale Roma?
A fixed Elly8.net transfer costs from US$120 in a business sedan, US$160 in a business SUV, US$210 in a First Class Sedan and US$315 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle. The drive is about 15 km (9 mi), roughly 20 minutes on a clear road, and the fare is the same in either direction.
Can the chauffeur help with bags at Piazzale Roma?
Yes. The chauffeur unloads as close to the water as the square allows and helps you to your water taxi or the vaporetto stop. Give us your water-taxi time when you book and the arrival is timed to it, so the bags move from car to boat without waiting.
