Uber in London works much as it does in New York or Toronto: you open the app, see a price, and a car comes to you. What is different is the legal frame. Every app ride in London is private hire, licensed by Transport for London, which means it must be booked in advance through a licensed operator, cannot be hailed, and cannot collect you from a Heathrow terminal kerb. At Heathrow you walk to a car park to meet the driver.
For a short ride at a quiet hour, Uber in London is a perfectly good choice. For an arrival with a family and luggage, a 5 a.m. departure, a day of meetings or the end of a big event, a black cab or a pre-booked car with a fixed price is often the better booking. This guide explains the rules, the airport pickup points and the trips where each option wins.
Should you book Uber, a black cab or a private car in London?
Book Uber for short, flexible trips at normal hours when you can wait for the car. Hail a black cab when you need a ride now, from the street or a rank. Pre-book a private car for airports with luggage, early departures, groups, meeting days and events, where a fixed price per vehicle matters most.
Rides in London booked through Elly8.net are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. A chauffeur car is private hire too, so the same TfL rules apply to it as to an app ride. The difference is that it is booked ahead, at a price agreed before you travel and charged in US$.
How Uber in London differs from Uber at home
The app looks the same. These are the rules underneath it, from Transport for London's guide to taxis and private hire:
It is always pre-booked. TfL says private hire vehicles must be booked in advance through a licensed private hire operator. Tapping the app counts as that booking. What you cannot do is wave down a car that is not a black cab, or accept a ride from someone offering one on the street. TfL's advice on finding a ride is blunt: minicabs can only be booked in advance.
You get a booking confirmation with the driver's licence number. The operator must send a confirmation before the trip that includes, at minimum, the driver's private hire licence number and, where you can receive it, a photo.
Check the car and the driver. Licensed private hire vehicles show licence discs on the front and rear windscreens, and drivers wear a TfL ID with their name, photo and licence number. Vehicles and drivers are licensed separately, so TfL suggests checking both.
The price is an estimate, not a regulated fare. TfL does not regulate private hire fares. Operators must give an accurate fare estimate before the journey, unless a fixed fare is agreed, and prices move with demand.
Road charges work differently from black cabs. Private hire vehicles are not exempt from London's Congestion Charge, while licensed black cabs are. The charge is £18 a day inside the zone during charging hours.
None of this makes Uber in London worse. It makes it more structured than many North American cities, and it explains why the airport experience is different.
Uber from Heathrow: where you actually meet the car
Heathrow does not allow pick-ups on its terminal forecourts. On its passenger pick-up page, Heathrow says Uber riders must meet their driver on foot in their terminal's designated Terminal Parking car park. At Terminals 2, 3 and 5, Heathrow describes those car parks as about a two-minute walk from the terminal doors.
Terminal 4 is in transition. Heathrow says the Terminal 4 multi-storey car park closed from 23 June 2026 for redevelopment. Collections there now use a Priority Pick-Up Area outside the terminal, priced from £7 for up to 10 minutes, or the free pick-up option in Zone A of the Park & Ride car park, which is linked to the terminal by shuttle bus.
So the real sequence for an app ride at Heathrow is: clear passport control and baggage reclaim, open the app, request the car, walk with your bags to the car park, find the bay, and wait for the driver to arrive. After an overnight flight with children, that walk and wait is the part people remember.
A pre-booked Elly8.net chauffeur works to the same airport rules but in a different order. The chauffeur tracks your flight, is inside the arrivals hall with a name board when you come through, and walks with you to the car. Waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary, and any car park charge is billed at cost. See meet and greet for the detail.
Uber at Gatwick, City and the other airports
At Gatwick, cars collecting passengers use the Short Stay car parks or the express pick-up bays inside them, according to Gatwick's pick-up guide: Car Park 6, level 4 at the North Terminal and Car Park 3, ground floor at the South Terminal, charged at Short Stay rates. Gatwick to Mayfair is about 66 km (41 mi) and just over an hour on a clear road, and a fixed Elly8.net fare starts at US$340 in a business sedan.
London City Airport sits on the Royal Docks, about 16 km (10 mi) from Mayfair, and a fixed Elly8.net transfer starts at US$155. Stansted and Farnborough are each about 64 km (40 mi) out, from US$335. Every airport fare is the same in either direction.
What an Uber from Heathrow to central London costs
Uber does not publish a fixed Heathrow fare, and app prices change with the time of day, demand and traffic, so any single number would be a guess. What you can compare against is published:
| Option, Heathrow to central London | Price | How it is set | Where you meet it |
|---|---|---|---|
| App ride (Uber and similar) | shown in the app before you book | operator estimate, moves with demand | Terminal Parking car park, on foot |
| Licensed black cab | £70 to £120, plus £1.60 rank extra | TfL meter estimate | taxi rank outside the terminal |
| Elly8.net Business Sedan | US$195 fixed | agreed at booking, per vehicle | inside arrivals, name board |
| Elly8.net Business SUV | US$255 fixed | agreed at booking, per vehicle | inside arrivals, name board |
| Elly8.net Executive Sprinter | US$510 fixed | agreed at booking, per vehicle | inside arrivals, name board |
The black cab range is from TfL's published fares. Elly8.net fares include the chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet; tolls, road charges, parking and Heathrow's charges are billed at cost. A Business Sedan seats 3 with 2 bags, a Business SUV 6 with 6 bags, and a Sprinter 12 with 12.
If the app quote at the moment you land is low, and you are travelling light, take it. The value of a fixed fare is that it does not depend on which moment you land in.
Five questions that decide the booking
1. Do you need a ride right now? Only a black cab can be hailed. If you are standing on a street in the West End with your hand up, the cab with its yellow light on is the answer.
2. How many bags? An app ride sends whichever car is nearby in the class you pick. If you have more cases than people, book a vehicle that is confirmed to carry them.
3. Does the time matter? For a 5 a.m. pickup or a meeting at 9, you want the car committed in advance, not found at the moment you need it.
4. Is it a peak moment? Rain, Friday evenings, theatre turn-out and stadium exits are when app prices rise and cars are hardest to find. That is when a booked pickup earns its fare.
5. Do you need child seats or wheelchair access? Elly8.net fits child seats on request. TfL says all licensed black cabs are wheelchair accessible, while private hire vehicles must carry wheelchair users only if they are designated wheelchair-accessible.
Where each option wins
Uber or another app is fine for a short daytime ride from your hotel, a late dinner across town on a weeknight, or any flexible trip where you can wait a few minutes and accept the quoted price.
A black cab is better when you need a ride immediately, when you are at a rank, when the app shows a long wait or a high price, or when you need guaranteed wheelchair access. The meter is regulated, card payment is required in every cab with no surcharge, and within Greater London drivers must accept hires of up to 12 miles, or 20 from Heathrow, unless they have good reason not to. Our guide to London black cab and rideshare fares has TfL's full tariffs.
A pre-booked car wins for Heathrow and Gatwick arrivals with family or luggage, early departures, days of meetings, the end of a concert or gala, and trips outside London. It is also the only option of the three that a company can put on a corporate account with monthly invoicing in US$. For a ride-by-ride view of a whole visit, see London taxi vs Uber vs private car.
Business travel, receipts and expenses
For travellers on a company budget, the way each option bills can matter as much as the price. An app ride produces a receipt in pounds for each trip, at whatever the fare was at that moment. A black cab is paid on the meter, also in pounds, and every licensed cab takes contactless cards. An Elly8.net booking is quoted and charged in US$ before the trip, at a fixed price per vehicle, which makes a week of London rides easier to approve and reconcile from an office in Chicago or Toronto.
Companies that book regularly can open a corporate account with monthly invoicing, one set of fixed fares across all five London airports, and NDAs on request. Assistants can book for any traveller, and the same account works in our other cities across North America and Europe. See corporate car service.
A departure-day example
A couple flying home from Heathrow Terminal 5 at 8:30 a.m., staying in Kensington, wants to be at the airport by 6:15 a.m. Ordering an app ride at 5:30 a.m. may well work, but it depends on a driver being nearby at that moment, and the price is whatever the app shows then. A black cab at 5:30 a.m. on a weekday runs the daytime Tariff 1, but first it has to be found.
A pre-booked Business Sedan at US$195, fixed, is outside at 5:30 a.m. because it was booked for 5:30 a.m. Heathrow's £7 Terminal Drop-Off Charge applies to every vehicle entering a terminal drop-off zone, app ride or chauffeur, and on our booking it is billed at cost. If the couple were alone with one case each and staying near Paddington, we would point them to the Heathrow Express instead; our guide to whether the Heathrow Express is worth it explains when.

Frequently asked questions
Does Uber work in London?
Yes. App rides operate in London as private hire under Transport for London rules. Every trip must be booked in advance through a licensed operator, cars show TfL licence discs on the windscreens, and drivers wear a TfL ID. You cannot hail an app car on the street.
Where do you meet an Uber at Heathrow?
Heathrow says Uber riders meet their driver on foot in their terminal's Terminal Parking car park, about two minutes' walk from the doors at Terminals 2, 3 and 5. At Terminal 4, collections use the Priority Pick-Up Area or Zone A of the Park & Ride car park.
How much is an Uber from Heathrow to central London?
The price is set by the app at the time you book and moves with demand, so there is no published figure. For comparison, TfL estimates £70 to £120 for a black cab on the meter, and a fixed Elly8.net car starts at US$195 per vehicle.
Is Uber cheaper than a black cab in London?
Often, for short trips at quiet times. Black cab fares are regulated and rise in the evening, at weekends and overnight, while app prices move with demand, so at peak moments the app can cost more. For airport runs with luggage, compare both against a fixed fare.
Can a chauffeur meet me inside the terminal?
Yes. An Elly8.net chauffeur meets you inside the arrivals hall with a name board, tracks your flight and waits after a tracked landing at no charge, then walks you to the car. App drivers wait in the car park instead.
Do app rides pay the Congestion Charge?
Private hire vehicles, including app rides and chauffeur cars, are not exempt from London's £18 daily Congestion Charge; licensed black cabs are. On Elly8.net bookings the charge is billed at cost when the trip enters the zone during charging hours.
