The Heathrow Express is worth it if you are travelling alone or as a pair with light bags, your hotel is near Paddington, and you value 15 minutes on a train over a cheaper, slower one. A standard single is £26, or from £10 if you book 30 days or more ahead, and children 15 and under travel free in Standard Class with a paying adult.
It is often not worth it once you add the last mile. Paddington is one station on the edge of the West End, not your hotel's front door, and a family of four with suitcases pays four fares to get there before a taxi to Knightsbridge or the City. That is where the Elizabeth line, a black cab or a pre-booked car changes the answer, and this guide sets out the numbers for each.
Is the Heathrow Express worth it?
Yes for one or two travellers with light luggage staying near Paddington or Marylebone, especially with an advance fare. No for families, groups with large cases, late arrivals or hotels far from Paddington: there, the Elizabeth line is cheaper and goes further, and a car priced per vehicle is simpler door to door.
The rest of this guide is the detail behind that verdict: what each ticket costs in 2026, how long each option really takes to your hotel, and where a car from US$195 per vehicle starts to beat four train tickets.
What the Heathrow Express costs
These are the fares published on the Heathrow Express site for travel between Heathrow and London Paddington.
| Ticket | Standard Class | PREMIER+ Class |
|---|---|---|
| Single | £26.00 | £32.00 |
| Advance Discounted Single, 30+ days ahead | from £10.00 | not listed |
| Same Day Return | £30.00 | £36.00 |
| Return | £42.00 | £46.00 |
| Carnet of 6 singles | £125.00 | £160.00 |
| Children 15 and under | free with a paying adult | not listed |
You can also tap in and out with a contactless bank card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or Oyster, at the full single fare. Advance tickets are valid only in the direction you bought them. PREMIER+ adds extra legroom and includes Fast Track security on departure, which otherwise costs £12.50 per person.
Timing. Trains leave every 15 minutes. The run from Paddington to Heathrow Terminals 2 & 3 takes 15 minutes, with an extra 6 minutes to Terminal 5. Terminal 4 has no Heathrow Express platform; you change at Terminals 2 & 3 for a free Elizabeth line transfer, about 4 minutes more.
The Paddington problem
The Heathrow Express ends at Paddington. That is ideal if you are staying in Paddington, Bayswater or Marylebone, and a second journey if you are not.
From Paddington to a hotel in Mayfair or Knightsbridge is roughly 1.6 to 1.9 miles by road on our routing. Transport for London's published taxi fare guide puts a typical two-mile black cab journey at £12.60 to £20.20 on weekday daytime rates, and 10 to 20 minutes. For the City, Canary Wharf or the South Bank, the onward trip is longer, and with bags the Tube is hard work.
So the honest time comparison is not 15 minutes against a car's 35 to 60. It is 15 minutes, plus the walk to the platform, plus the wait for the next train, plus the queue at the Paddington taxi rank, plus the cab ride. On a good day the train still wins for one person. With children, cases and a stroller, the gap narrows quickly.
Heathrow Express, Elizabeth line or Piccadilly line
Heathrow has three rail links into London, and they suit different travellers.
| Train | Adult fare from Heathrow | Time | Frequency | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heathrow Express | £26 single, from £10 advance | 15 min to Paddington from T2&3 | every 15 min | Paddington only |
| Elizabeth line | £14.60 pay as you go to Paddington | about 28 min to Paddington | 6 trains an hour at T2&3; 2 an hour at T5 | Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street, Canary Wharf |
| Piccadilly line | £5.90 pay as you go to Piccadilly Circus | under an hour to central London | frequent, all terminals | Knightsbridge, Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square, King's Cross St Pancras |
The Elizabeth line and Piccadilly line fares are from Transport for London's single fare finder; journey times are from TfL's Elizabeth line Heathrow guide and Heathrow's own rail page.
The Elizabeth line is the one most visitors overlook. It costs £11.40 less than a Heathrow Express single to the same platform at Paddington, takes about 13 minutes longer, and then carries on under the West End to Bond Street and Tottenham Court Road, and east to the City and Canary Wharf, without changing trains. For a solo traveller staying near any of those stations, it beats the Heathrow Express on value and often on total time. Note that Terminal 5 has only two Elizabeth line trains an hour.
The Piccadilly line is the budget option at £5.90, but it is an ordinary Tube service that gets crowded at peak times, which matters with suitcases. It is part of the Night Tube on Friday and Saturday nights. With one small case and time to spare, it works.
Train, taxi or car by party size
Here is the arithmetic for a Heathrow arrival to a hotel in Mayfair, with the Heathrow Express at the standard single fare plus a black cab from Paddington. The car fare is per vehicle. We show pounds and dollars separately because exchange rates move; convert at your card's rate on the day.
| Party | Heathrow Express + cab from Paddington | Black cab from Heathrow rank | Elly8.net car, per vehicle |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 adult, 1 case | £26 + £12.60 to £20.20 | £70 to £120 + £1.60 | US$195, Business Sedan |
| 2 adults, 2 cases | £52 + £12.60 to £20.20 | £70 to £120 + £1.60 | US$195, Business Sedan |
| 2 adults, 2 children, 4 cases | £52 + cab, children free | £70 to £120 + £1.60 | US$255, Business SUV |
| 4 adults, 4 cases | £104 + cab | £70 to £120 + £1.60 | US$255, Business SUV |
| 8 adults, 8 cases | £208 + two cabs | two or more cabs | US$510, Executive Sprinter |
The black cab range is TfL's own estimate for Heathrow to central London on the meter, and £1.60 is the extra for journeys that start at a Heathrow taxi rank. A Business Sedan seats 3 with 2 bags and a Business SUV 6 with 6 bags, so a family's luggage fits in one vehicle.
Read the table this way. For one or two adults, the train is cheaper than a car, and an advance £10 fare makes it far cheaper. For a family of four, children ride free on the Heathrow Express, which keeps the train competitive. For four adults, the train fares alone approach the cab fare, and a fixed car for the whole group is the simplest option. For eight, one Sprinter replaces eight train tickets and two cabs.
Four arrivals, four verdicts
A consultant from Chicago, one carry-on, hotel at Paddington. Heathrow Express, no question. Booked a month ahead at £10, it is the cheapest, fastest door-to-desk option of all, and the hotel is across the road from the platform.
A couple from Toronto, two large cases, hotel near Tottenham Court Road. Elizabeth line. It runs straight from Terminals 2 & 3 to Tottenham Court Road without a change, at £14.60 each. The Heathrow Express would mean changing at Paddington with the cases.
A family of five from Dallas, overnight flight, flat in Kensington. A car. Three children ride free on the Heathrow Express, but five people with five cases still face Paddington, a cab queue and a vehicle big enough for everyone. A Business SUV at US$255 seats six with six bags, fits child seats on request, and goes to the door of the flat.
A deal team of seven from New York, meetings at Canary Wharf by 11 a.m. An Executive Sprinter at US$510, which seats 12 with room for 12 bags. The Elizabeth line reaches Canary Wharf too, but seven people with cases and laptops on a morning train is a hard way to start a roadshow, and the car becomes a meeting room on the way. Our roadshow chauffeur page covers the day that follows.
When the Heathrow Express is the right answer
- You are alone or a couple, with one case each.
- Your hotel is near Paddington, Bayswater or Marylebone.
- You booked an advance fare from £10. At that price nothing on the road competes.
- You are flying out of Terminals 2, 3 or 5 in the daytime and leaving from Paddington.
- Traffic is bad. On a weekday morning the M4 and the A4 into Kensington are slow, and a train that ignores them is valuable.
When a car is the better choice
- Your group is three adults or more, or a family with lots of luggage. One fixed price covers everyone.
- Your hotel is not near Paddington. Knightsbridge, Chelsea, the South Bank, the City or Canary Wharf all need a second journey from Paddington; our London car service goes straight to the door.
- You land tired after an overnight flight, with children, a stroller or car seats. Elly8.net fits child seats on request.
- You are going straight to a meeting. The car is a quiet place to work, and a corporate car service account bills monthly.
- Your flight lands at Terminal 4, where there is no Heathrow Express platform.

What a pre-booked car does at Heathrow
Heathrow does not allow pick-ups on the terminal forecourts. According to Heathrow's pick-up rules, collections happen from the Terminal Parking car parks at Terminals 2, 3 and 5, about a two-minute walk from the terminal doors, or from the Park & Ride. App-booked rides work the same way: Heathrow says Uber riders meet their driver on foot in the terminal's Terminal Parking car park.
An Elly8.net chauffeur meets you inside the arrivals hall with a name board, after passport control and baggage reclaim, then walks with you and your bags to the car. The flight is tracked from the number on your booking, and waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary, so a long immigration queue does not run up a bill. Any car park charge for the pickup is billed at cost. See meet and greet for what happens inside the terminal.
The fixed fare from Heathrow to Mayfair is from US$195 in a business sedan, US$255 in a business SUV, US$345 in a First Class Sedan, US$315 in a First Class SUV and US$510 in an Executive Sprinter. It covers central addresses in the same zone. A round trip is from US$375 to US$970.
Going back to Heathrow
On departure day the same logic applies in reverse. The Heathrow Express from Paddington is excellent if you are near Paddington. From elsewhere, you first need to get to Paddington with your bags.
The car fare to Heathrow is the same fixed price as the fare from it. Heathrow charges every vehicle £7 each time it enters a terminal drop-off zone, under its Terminal Drop-Off Charge; on Elly8.net bookings that charge is billed at cost. Allow for weekday-morning and Friday-afternoon traffic on the M4.

Frequently asked questions
How much is the Heathrow Express?
A standard single between Heathrow and Paddington is £26, a PREMIER+ single £32, and an advance single booked 30 or more days ahead from £10. A return is £42 in Standard Class. Children 15 and under travel free in Standard Class with a paying adult.
Is the Elizabeth line better than the Heathrow Express?
For many visitors, yes. It costs £14.60 pay as you go to Paddington against £26, takes about 28 minutes instead of 15, and continues to Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street and Canary Wharf without changing. The Heathrow Express is faster only if Paddington is where you are going.
Does the Heathrow Express go to Terminal 4?
No. It serves Terminals 2 & 3 and Terminal 5. For Terminal 4, change at Terminals 2 & 3 for a free Elizabeth line transfer, which Heathrow Express says takes about 4 minutes more. A pre-booked car goes straight to Terminal 4 with no change.
Is a car cheaper than the Heathrow Express for a family?
It depends on the family. Children 15 and under ride free on the Heathrow Express, so two adults and two children pay two fares plus a taxi from Paddington. A fixed Elly8.net Business SUV is US$255 per vehicle, door to door, with child seats on request.
Where does the chauffeur meet you at Heathrow?
Inside the arrivals hall of your terminal, holding a name board, after passport control and baggage reclaim. Heathrow does not allow pick-ups on the forecourts, so the chauffeur walks with you to the car in the Terminal Parking car park, about two minutes from the doors.
What if my flight is late?
The chauffeur tracks your flight and works to the actual landing time, and waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary. If the flight is cancelled or diverted, message the 24/7 desk and we move the transfer to the new arrival time, so nobody is left waiting at the wrong hour.
