An Uber from Seattle airport is picked up on the third floor of the SEA parking garage, reached across the skybridges from the terminal; Lyft uses the same floor, and only premium rides such as Uber Black meet at a door outside baggage claim. Taxis wait on the same third floor, with a US$20 minimum fare. A pre-booked Elly8.net car is met inside at baggage claim and costs a fixed US$170 to downtown Seattle in a Business Sedan.
Which one you should book depends less on the vehicle than on the trip: how many of you there are, how much luggage, what time you land and whether a known price matters. Below is how each option works at SEA, using the Port of Seattle's own rules, followed by six common scenarios with a plain recommendation for each. Sometimes that recommendation is the app or the taxi, and we say so.
Is Uber, a taxi or a private car best from Seattle airport?
For one or two people with light bags at an ordinary hour, an app ride or a taxi is usually cheapest. For families with child seats, groups with luggage, late-night arrivals, cruise passengers and business travelers who need a fixed price, a pre-booked car is better. An Elly8.net Business SUV to downtown is US$225 for up to six people.
| At SEA | Uber or Lyft | Taxi | Elly8.net |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where you meet the vehicle | Garage, 3rd floor (Uber Black: bag-claim door) | Garage, 3rd floor, north and south curbs | Inside, at baggage claim |
| Price | Shown in the app, varies with demand | Metered, US$20 minimum | Fixed: US$170 sedan to US$445 Sprinter |
| Booked in advance | No, requested on landing | No | Yes, with flight tracking |
| Child seats | Do not count on it | Bring your own | On request, fitted before pickup |
| Vehicle size guaranteed | Depends on the app category | Depends on the line | Yes, chosen at booking |

How an Uber or Lyft pickup works at SEA
The Port of Seattle's ride-app page sets out the route. After collecting your bags, you go up to the skybridges, which sit one level below ticketing and one level above baggage claim, cross into the parking garage, then go down one level to the third floor. Signs for app-based rides run through the terminal and the baggage claim area. All Lyft rides and UberX pick up there; Uber Black meets at the baggage-claim door you choose in the app.
Two details from the Port's own driver rules explain the wait. The Ground Transportation Rules and Instructions say app drivers may not cruise or loiter on airport property waiting for a request; outside of some exceptions, they accept airport pickups from a designated staging area on South 160th Street. So when you tap "request", a driver is usually dispatched from that lot and drives to the garage. At busy times, the wait for the car to arrive and park can be longer than the drive to downtown would suggest.
The Port also asks passengers to wait until the assigned vehicle has parked before boarding, and to refuse offers of transport from "helpful strangers" in the terminal, who may be illegal operators.
Surge and pricing
App prices are not published as a rate card. The fare is calculated by the app at the time of the request and moves with demand, so a quote at 2 p.m. on a Tuesday and a quote at 11 p.m. on a Friday in July can be very different for the same trip. We do not quote app fares here, because any number would be a guess. What is predictable is when demand peaks: the Port notes that arrivals drives are often congested between 8 p.m. and midnight and that traffic rises around weekends, holidays and summer travel.
How the taxi works at SEA
Taxis are metered only and wait on the third floor of the garage on the north and south curbs, according to the Port's taxi page. Every trip from the airport has a US$20 minimum fare under King County Ordinance 19700, and the meter then runs on distance and time. Taxis run 24 hours a day, and the supply includes wheelchair-accessible vans and 11-seat vans. Our SeaTac taxi guide covers the stand, payment and tips.
How a pre-booked car works
With Elly8.net, the booking is made before you fly, with your flight number. The desk tracks the flight, the chauffeur waits inside at baggage claim with a name board, and complimentary waiting starts after a tracked landing. The chauffeur walks you to the car, which is parked under the Port's pre-arranged limousine rules in designated stalls on the garage's third floor or picks up on the Arrivals Drive. The price is set at the booking and includes the chauffeur, taxes, a standard gratuity and the meet and greet; tolls and parking are billed at cost.
| SEA to downtown Seattle | One way | Round trip | Seats and bags |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business Sedan | US$170 | US$325 | 3 and 2 |
| Business SUV | US$225 | US$430 | 6 and 6 |
| First Class SUV | US$275 | US$525 | 6 and 6 |
| First Class Sedan | US$300 | US$570 | 3 and 2 |
| Executive Sprinter | US$445 | US$850 | 12 and 12 |
Rides in Seattle are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk.
Six scenarios, six answers
1. Solo traveler, carry-on only, landing at 2 p.m., hotel near a downtown station
Book: Link light rail, or an app ride. Link costs US$3.00 for adults, per Sound Transit, and the Port describes the trip as a 38-minute ride to downtown. If the hotel is a short walk from a station, nothing else comes close on value. If it is up a steep hill, an app ride from the garage is a reasonable alternative.
2. Couple with two large cases, landing at 6 p.m. on a weekday
Book: a taxi or an app ride, unless the price must be fixed. Two people splitting a metered fare or an app fare will usually pay less than a private car. Expect the northbound evening traffic. If you want the bags handled and a known total, a Business Sedan at US$170 is the alternative.
3. Family of four with car seats, landing at 11:30 p.m.
Book: a private car. This is the scenario the pre-booked car was designed for. The chauffeur is inside at the carousel, the seats are already fitted, and you do not walk four tired people and a stroller to the garage during the busiest pickup window of the night. A Business SUV at US$225 takes up to six passengers and six bags. An app ride with no child seat is not a safe plan for small children.
4. Executive landing for a 9 a.m. meeting in Bellevue
Book: a private car, ideally on hourly. The meeting is the reason for the trip. A fixed booking removes the variable of a slow app match during the morning peak. If the day continues across the Eastside, hourly service from US$100 per hour in a Business Sedan (3-hour minimum) keeps the same car all morning, and a corporate account puts it on a monthly invoice. Our Seattle executive car service guide explains how companies book this.
5. Ten friends flying in for a Seahawks game
Book: one Executive Sprinter. Ten people in three or four app rides arrive at different times and spend the end of the game trying to find each other. A Sprinter from SEA to downtown is US$445 for up to 12 passengers and 12 bags, about US$45 each for ten, and the evening out and event night package covers the game itself. See our Seattle Sprinter van rental guide.
6. Cruise passengers with a week of luggage, sailing the same day
Book: a private car or the cruise line's transfer. There is no transit from the airport to Pier 91 and no direct transit to Pier 66, and on turnaround days the pier approaches are busy. A pre-booked SUV or Sprinter matched to the luggage takes the stress out of the morning. The cost of each option is set out in Seattle airport to the cruise port by Uber, taxi or chauffeur.
The hidden costs of each option
App rides: the price moves with demand, and the vehicle size depends on the category you select. A standard car may not take four large cases. Larger app categories cost more.
Taxis: the meter adds time in traffic, and a tip is expected on top. The fare is per vehicle, which helps for small groups.
Private car: the headline price is higher for one or two people, but it already includes gratuity and meet and greet. Tolls on the route, such as the SR 99 tunnel or the SR 520 bridge, are billed at cost for every option, since the Washington State Department of Transportation tolls those facilities by time of day.
Uber Black versus a pre-booked chauffeur
Uber Black is the closest app product to a chauffeur: it meets at a baggage-claim door rather than in the garage. The differences are that it is requested on landing rather than booked against a flight, that its price is set at the time of the request, and that the meeting point is a door outside baggage claim rather than a chauffeur waiting inside with a name board. Our Uber Black versus a pre-booked chauffeur comparison and the broader chauffeur versus Uber and Lyft page go further.
Going back to the airport
For departures, app rides and taxis drop off on the departure drive. The Port notes that the departure drives are often congested between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m., and that during peaks app drivers may drop passengers on the arrivals level to save time. A pre-booked Elly8.net car arrives at your door at a set time, and the round trip booked together is US$325 in a Business Sedan rather than two fares of US$170.
Making the app option work better
If you choose an app ride, a few steps help. Wait until you have your bags before requesting, since the driver is usually coming from the staging lot and the clock starts when you tap. Choose a category large enough for your luggage rather than hoping it fits. Follow the airport's signs to the third floor of the garage, and check the plate before you get in, as the Port advises. If you are a group, agree in advance who requests which car and where you will meet afterwards. And if a fixed price or an inside meeting matters more than flexibility, book a car before you fly instead.

Frequently asked questions
Where is the Uber pickup at Seattle airport?
On the third floor of the SEA parking garage. From baggage claim, go up to the skybridges, cross into the garage and go down one level. Lyft and UberX pick up there; Uber Black meets at the baggage-claim door you select. Wait until your assigned car has parked before boarding.
How much is an Uber from Seattle airport to downtown?
App fares are not published; the app calculates the price at the time of your request and it changes with demand, so evenings, weekends and summer can cost more. A taxi is metered with a US$20 minimum. An Elly8.net Business Sedan is a fixed US$170, all-in.
Why does it take a while for an Uber to arrive at SEA?
Under the Port's rules, app drivers may not wait on airport property; they usually accept airport pickups from a staging area on South 160th Street and drive to the garage once matched. At peak times, finding and reaching a driver can take longer than expected.
Is a taxi cheaper than Uber from SeaTac?
It depends on the time. The taxi is metered with a US$20 minimum, and app prices move with demand. At quiet times either can be cheaper; at peak times, app prices can rise. For a known price in advance, the pre-booked car is the only fixed option.
Can an Uber from Seattle airport have car seats?
Do not count on it. If you are travelling with small children, bring and fit your own seats or book a car that provides them. Elly8.net supplies child seats on request and fits them before the chauffeur meets you at baggage claim.
Which is best after a late-night flight into SEA?
For one person with a carry-on, an app ride or a taxi works. For families, groups and anyone tired after a long-haul flight, a pre-booked car is the calmer choice: the chauffeur is already inside at baggage claim, and the price does not change with late-night demand.
