A taxi from Austin airport is easy to find but not at the curb outside baggage claim: taxis and app rides at Austin-Bergstrom (AUS) both pick up from the same area under the Consolidated Rental Car Facility, behind the Red Garage. The fare is metered. A pre-booked Elly8.net car meets you inside the terminal instead, at a fixed US$120 to downtown in a business sedan, and CapMetro's Route 20 bus costs US$1.25.
None of these options is always best. The airport is only about 8 miles (13 km) from downtown, roughly 14 minutes on a clear road, so the price gap between them is small for some trips and large for others. This comparison sets out what each option really involves on arrival, with the numbers the airport and the transit agency publish, and says plainly when the bus, the taxi or the app is the smarter call.
Which is cheapest from AUS to downtown Austin?
The CapMetro Route 20 bus is cheapest at US$1.25 a ride or US$2.50 for a day. A taxi is metered and an app ride is priced by demand. A pre-booked Elly8.net business sedan is US$120 fixed, all-in, for up to three people; an Executive Sprinter is US$315 for up to twelve.
Price per person is what matters for groups. The bus is per person; taxis, app rides and chauffeured cars are per vehicle. Four friends sharing a business SUV at US$160 pay US$40 each. Ten colleagues sharing an Executive Sprinter at US$315 pay about US$32 each, with meet and greet and room for ten bags.
| Option | What you pay | Where you board | Time to downtown | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CapMetro Route 20 | US$1.25 single ride, US$2.50 day | Airport bus stop | Longer, with stops | One traveller, light bag, daylight |
| Taxi | Metered fare | Under the rental car facility, behind the Red Garage | About 14 min clear road, more in traffic | One or two people, walk-up trips |
| Uber or Lyft | App price, moves with demand | Same area as taxis | Wait time plus traffic | Quiet times, short notice |
| Uber Black or similar | App price, moves with demand | Same area as taxis | Wait time plus traffic | Premium car at short notice |
| Elly8.net business sedan | US$120 fixed, all-in | Inside the terminal, at baggage claim | About 14 min clear road | Late flights, meetings, fixed budgets |
| Elly8.net Executive Sprinter | US$315 fixed, all-in | Inside the terminal, at baggage claim | About 14 min clear road | Teams and groups with bags |

What each option looks like when you land
Austin's airport has one passenger terminal now. The South Terminal closed on April 1, 2026, and its airlines, Allegiant and Frontier, moved into the Barbara Jordan Terminal, according to the airport's South Terminal notice. Everything below starts at Barbara Jordan.
CapMetro Route 20
The airport describes CapMetro's Route 20 as a high-frequency route serving AUS. On CapMetro's fare page, a local single ride is US$1.25 and a service-day pass US$2.50, and CapMetro has announced that fares increase on January 10, 2027. Check the new fares if you are travelling after that date.
The honest case for the bus: if you are on your own, travelling light and heading somewhere on the route in daylight, it is hard to argue with a ride that costs less than a coffee. The case against: it stops along the way, you carry your own bags on and off, and it does not help a family with child seats or a group with suitcases.
Taxi
Taxis at AUS do not wait at the terminal curb. The airport sends arriving passengers who want a taxi or an app ride to the pickup area under the Consolidated Rental Car Facility, just north of or behind the Red Garage. From baggage claim you walk to the first floor of the Red Garage, where a tram runs to the rideshare and taxi pickup. The airport lists three taxi companies on its ground transportation page.
The fare is metered, so it rises with traffic. On a clear midday run to downtown that is fine. At the evening peak, or on a festival afternoon when Cesar Chavez backs up, the meter runs while you sit. A taxi is a sensible choice for one or two travellers who did not pre-book and are not in a hurry.
Uber, Lyft and Uber Black
App rides use the same pickup area as taxis. Prices are not published in advance; they are set by the app at the moment you request, and they move with demand. That is the core issue at AUS: the demand peaks are predictable. SXSW week, race weekends at Circuit of The Americas, ACL Festival weekends and Friday evenings all push app prices up and lengthen the wait for a driver, and the pickup area itself gets crowded.
For a premium car, Uber Black and similar tiers offer a better vehicle but follow the same pickup rules and the same demand pricing. We have written a fuller comparison in Uber Black vs a pre-booked chauffeur and chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft.
A pre-booked private car
With an Elly8.net airport transfer, you give us the flight number when you book. The chauffeur tracks the landing, waits inside the Barbara Jordan Terminal at baggage claim with a name board, and walks you to the vehicle. Complimentary waiting after a tracked landing is included, so a delayed connection or a slow bag belt is not a problem. There is no tram ride to a shared pickup area and no queue. See meet and greet for how the meeting works.
Passengers who need extra help have a separate option: the airport runs a free Mobility Assistance Zone, open daily from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m., for wheelchair-accessible vehicles, taxis and rideshares, and a Mobility Tram from the third floor of the Red Garage between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. If anyone in your group uses a wheelchair or scooter, tell the desk when you book so the right vehicle is sent.
Six real trips and the right answer for each
One traveller, carry-on only, landing at 1 p.m., hotel on Congress Avenue. Take the bus or a taxi. A chauffeur is a comfort here, not a necessity, and the saving is real.
A couple landing at 6 p.m. on a Friday, dinner booked at 8. A taxi or app ride will work most Fridays, with some waiting in the pickup area. If the dinner matters, a business sedan at US$120 removes the variables: the car is waiting, the fare is known, and the drop-off is at the hotel's main door.
A family of five with two child seats and four suitcases. Book a business SUV at US$160. Child seats are provided on request and fitted before pickup, and six bags fit. Taxis and standard app cars rarely carry this load in one vehicle.
A team of ten flying in for a Domain offsite. One Executive Sprinter, priced for the drive to the Domain in the web booker, keeps the group together with room for twelve bags. Downtown it is US$315, about US$32 a person. Two or three app rides would arrive at different times and cost more in total at busy hours.
An executive landing at 5 p.m. with a 6:30 p.m. meeting. A business sedan or First Class sedan (US$210). The point is not the car but the certainty: the chauffeur is tracking the flight, and a corporate account puts the ride on a monthly invoice instead of an expense claim.
Anyone landing during SXSW or a race weekend. Pre-book. SXSW 2027 runs March 15 to 21, and Circuit of The Americas lists NASCAR on March 5 to 7 and MotoGP on April 23 to 25, 2027. Those are the days the pickup area is busiest and app prices move most. An Elly8.net price does not change with demand.
Time, luggage and the walk
Travel time from AUS is similar for every car-based option once you are moving. The differences sit at the beginning of the trip.
| Step | Taxi or app ride | Pre-booked Elly8.net car |
|---|---|---|
| Leaving baggage claim | Walk to the Red Garage, tram to the pickup area | Chauffeur meets you at baggage claim |
| Finding the car | Queue for a taxi, or match the app car in a busy area | Chauffeur walks you to the vehicle |
| Luggage | Driver's car may not fit large groups or many bags | Vehicle chosen for bags: up to 2 in a sedan, 6 in an SUV, 12 in a Sprinter |
| Price certainty | Meter or app price at the time | Fixed before you fly |
| Delays | You re-request if the flight is late | Flight tracking adjusts pickup |
That table is the whole argument for a pre-booked car. If none of those rows matter to you on a particular trip, take the cheaper option.
The departure leg
Going back to the airport, taxis and app rides drop off at the upper level departures curb, as do chauffeured cars. Elly8.net airport fares are the same fixed price in either direction: US$120 from a downtown hotel to AUS in a business sedan, US$160 in a business SUV, US$315 in an Executive Sprinter. If you book both legs, the round trip is cheaper than two one-ways, at US$230 in a business sedan and US$600 in an Executive Sprinter.
The departure is also where pre-booking helps most on busy weekends, because you do not want to be refreshing an app at a hotel door during SXSW with a flight to catch. If your stay includes a few days of meetings, read our guide to Austin executive car service; if you are in town with a group, see the Austin private driver guide for which vehicle fits which trip.
Verdict
Use the bus when you are alone, light and not in a hurry. Use a taxi or an app ride for one or two people at quiet times when you are happy to walk to the pickup area. Book a private car when you land late, travel with a family or a team, need child seats, have a meeting soon after landing, need corporate billing, or arrive on one of Austin's big event weekends.
For trips beyond downtown, such as Lake Travis, Round Rock or San Antonio, the web booker returns a fixed price for the exact address. The Austin car service page has the full price list, and San Antonio car service is on the same account for an onward drive.
Frequently asked questions
Where do taxis pick up at Austin airport?
Under the Consolidated Rental Car Facility, just north of or behind the Red Garage, in the same area as rideshare pickups. From baggage claim, walk to the first floor of the Red Garage and take the tram to the pickup area. Taxis and app rides do not collect arriving passengers at the terminal curb.
How much is a taxi from AUS to downtown Austin?
Austin taxis are metered, so the fare depends on traffic and the exact address. For comparison, an Elly8.net business sedan from AUS to downtown is a fixed US$120 all-in, including the chauffeur, taxes, a standard gratuity and meet and greet, with tolls and parking billed at cost.
Is there a bus from Austin airport to downtown?
Yes. CapMetro's Route 20 is a high-frequency route serving the airport. A local single ride is US$1.25 and a service-day pass is US$2.50, according to CapMetro. CapMetro has announced fare changes from January 10, 2027, so check the current fare if you travel after that.
Is Uber more expensive than a private car from AUS?
Sometimes. App prices are set at the moment you request and rise with demand, which is highest during SXSW, race weekends, ACL and Friday evenings. At quiet times an app ride is usually cheaper than a US$120 fixed sedan. At peak times the gap narrows, and the private car adds meet and greet inside the terminal.
What is the best option for a group from AUS?
An Executive Sprinter, which seats up to twelve with room for twelve bags. It is US$315 fixed to downtown, about US$26 a person for twelve. A business SUV at US$160 suits up to six. Both keep the group together and avoid splitting across several app rides.
Does the private car price change if my flight is late?
No. The chauffeur tracks your flight number and adjusts the pickup to the actual landing, and complimentary waiting after a tracked landing is included. The fare stays fixed. Only tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost.
