A DFW taxi fare is a metered fare: it is set by the distance you travel and the time you spend in traffic, and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport does not publish a single flat taxi price to Uptown or downtown Dallas on its ground transportation page. That means the honest answer to "how much is a taxi from DFW" is a range you can estimate before you leave the curb, plus whatever the freeway does to it on the day.

A pre-booked car works the other way round. An Elly8.net business sedan from DFW to Uptown Dallas is US$200 all-in, a business SUV US$260 and an Executive Sprinter for up to 12 people US$520, with the chauffeur, vehicle, taxes, a standard gratuity and meet and greet included. For one traveller with a carry-on, the taxi or the train is usually cheaper. For a family, a team or anyone landing at rush hour, the fixed price is often the better deal. This guide sets out the numbers and the trade-offs plainly.

How much is a taxi from DFW to Dallas?

DFW taxis are metered, and the airport does not post a flat fare to Dallas, so the price depends on distance, traffic and the time of day. Uptown is about 21 miles (34 km) from DFW, roughly 27 minutes on a clear road and much longer at rush hour. A fixed Elly8.net business sedan for the same trip is US$200 all-in.

What the airport does publish is how the taxi system works. According to DFW's ground transportation guide, taxis wait on the lower level of Terminals A, B, C, D and E, nineteen taxi companies are permitted to serve the airport, and a DFW guest assistant manages the taxi stands from 8 a.m. to midnight. After midnight, the airport lists a phone number to request a cab. There is no reservation and no fixed quote: you join the line, take the next cab and pay what the meter shows, plus the tip.

That is a perfectly good system for a lot of trips. It becomes less predictable when the drive is long, the traffic is heavy or the group is large enough to need two cabs.

What actually moves a DFW taxi fare

Four things decide the final number on a metered ride out of DFW.

Distance. DFW sits between Dallas and Fort Worth, so almost every trip is a long one by city-taxi standards. Uptown Dallas is about 21 miles (34 km) away and downtown Fort Worth about 24 miles (39 km). Las Colinas and Irving are closer, Plano and Frisco further.

Time in traffic. Meters charge for slow running as well as distance. The same 21 miles to Uptown can take 27 minutes on a clear road and close to an hour on a weekday evening when the LBJ Freeway, I-35E and the Dallas North Tollway corridors back up.

Tolls. The fastest routes across the Metroplex often use North Texas Tollway Authority roads. The NTTA notes that drivers without a TollTag pay twice as much as TollTag customers, and whoever is driving decides the route. On any metered ride, ask about the route before you set off.

Tip and extras. Taxi fares are quoted before gratuity, and in practice most passengers add one. With an Elly8.net fixed price, a standard gratuity is already in the total; tolls and parking are the only items billed at cost.

DFW taxi vs rideshare vs DART vs a fixed-price car

Here is the comparison on the route most visitors search for, DFW to Uptown or downtown Dallas. Elly8.net prices are the fixed published prices on the Dallas car service page; the taxi and app rows describe how the price is set, because neither publishes a fixed fare.

OptionWhat you payHow the price is setBest for

Elly8.net Executive Sprinter to UptownUS$520 fixed, all-inprice set when you bookTeams and groups of up to 12

The table makes one point clear: the cheapest option depends entirely on how many of you there are and how much you are carrying.

When the train is the right answer

If you are travelling alone, with one bag you can wheel yourself, and your hotel is near a station, rail is the cheapest way out of DFW by a wide margin. DFW's public transit page lists three connections from the terminals: the DART Orange Line, which runs from Terminal A through Irving and downtown Dallas to Plano; the newer DART Silver Line from Terminal B, which runs north through Coppell, Carrollton, Addison and Richardson to Plano and bypasses downtown; and Trinity Metro's TEXRail from Terminal B to downtown Fort Worth.

DART's airport guide adds two details worth knowing before you choose the train. A DART Local Pass, bought as a Day Pass or a 3-Hour Pass, covers DART Rail, the Silver Line and buses. And DART light rail has no luggage racks, so bags must not block the aisle, and operators do not help with luggage. Two large suitcases and a stroller on a busy Orange Line train is a different experience from one roller bag.

We are happy to say it: for a solo traveller at midday heading downtown with light luggage, the train is the smart call.

When a taxi is the right answer

A DFW taxi makes sense when you are one or two people, the trip is short, and you would rather not book anything. Las Colinas and the hotels around the airport are close enough that the meter does not run long, and there is no booking to manage if your plans change in the air. The airport's taxi stands are staffed for most of the day, which keeps the line moving.

The taxi becomes a gamble on long cross-Metroplex trips at peak hours, with more luggage than a sedan boot holds, or with a group that needs two cars. Two metered cabs to Uptown, each with its own tip, can approach or pass the cost of a single fixed-price SUV.

When a fixed-price car is cheaper

The maths turns in favour of a pre-booked car in four common situations.

Groups and families. A business SUV seats up to 6 with 6 bags for US$260 to Uptown, and an Executive Sprinter carries up to 12 with 12 bags for US$520. Split six ways, the SUV is about US$43 a person, with child seats fitted on request and nobody juggling bags in the taxi line. Split twelve ways, the Sprinter is about US$43 a person too, and the whole group arrives together.

Rush hour. The Elly8.net price does not change if the drive to Uptown takes an hour. On a meter, every slow mile costs more.

Late arrivals. When the guest assistant has gone home and the app shows a long wait, a chauffeur who has tracked your flight is already inside arrivals with a name board. Complimentary waiting after a tracked landing is part of the price, which matters after a long Customs queue.

Round trips and business days. A DFW round trip to Uptown is US$380 in a business sedan, less than two one-ways. If the day involves several stops, an hourly booking from US$95 an hour (3-hour minimum) replaces a string of separate fares. Our guide to Dallas executive car service explains how companies set that up.

DFW to Fort Worth, and the other Dallas airports

Not every DFW trip goes east. Downtown Fort Worth is about 24 miles (39 km) from the airport, and an Elly8.net business sedan is US$220 all-in, a business SUV US$290 and an Executive Sprinter US$575, as shown on the Fort Worth car service page. TEXRail is the budget alternative for a solo traveller staying near a downtown Fort Worth station.

If you have a choice of airport, it can change the fare more than the vehicle does. Dallas Love Field is about 5 miles (9 km) from Uptown, around 13 minutes on a clear road, and the fixed price starts at US$115 in a business sedan. Short Love Field hops are also where a taxi or app ride is most competitive. Addison Airport, mostly private and charter flights, is about 14 miles (23 km) from Uptown, with a business sedan at US$160; see private jet and FBO transfers for how those pickups work.

What is included in a fixed Elly8.net price

Comparing a taxi fare with a car service only works if you compare like with like. The Elly8.net airport price includes:

  • the chauffeur and the vehicle for the transfer;
  • taxes and a standard gratuity;
  • flight tracking and meet and greet inside arrivals with a name board;
  • complimentary waiting after a tracked landing.

Tolls and parking are billed at cost, and waiting beyond the included time is billed at cost as well. The price does not rise with demand, time of day or traffic. Rides in Dallas are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer. The airport transfers page explains the service in full, and the meet and greet page covers the arrivals routine.

How to decide in thirty seconds

Ask three questions.

  1. How many people and bags? One person with a carry-on: train or taxi. Three or more, or more than two large cases: an SUV usually costs the same as two cabs or less.
  2. When do you land? Midday on a weekday: any option works. Rush hour, late evening or a busy event weekend: a fixed price protects the budget.
  3. What happens after you land? Straight to a hotel: keep it simple. A meeting, a game at AT&T Stadium or a dinner: book the car so the timing is in someone else's hands.

For more on the general trade-offs, see chauffeur vs taxi, chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft and Uber Black vs a pre-booked chauffeur. If the question is the total cost of a longer booking rather than a single transfer, our breakdown of limo rental prices in Dallas shows how hourly and package quotes are built.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a flat taxi fare from DFW to downtown Dallas?

DFW's ground transportation guide does not list a flat taxi fare to downtown or Uptown Dallas; taxis are metered from the lower-level stands at each terminal. The final fare depends on distance, traffic and tolls, plus a tip. If you want a set price, an Elly8.net business sedan to Uptown is US$200 all-in, fixed when you book.

Is the DART train cheaper than a taxi from DFW?

Yes, by a wide margin for one person. The Orange Line leaves from Terminal A and the Silver Line from Terminal B, and a DART Local Day Pass or 3-Hour Pass covers the ride. The catch is luggage: DART light rail has no luggage racks and operators do not help with bags, so it suits light travellers.

When is a pre-booked car cheaper than a taxi?

Usually when there are three or more of you, when you have more bags than a sedan carries, or when you land at rush hour. A business SUV for up to 6 is US$260 to Uptown, and an Executive Sprinter for up to 12 is US$520, so the per-person cost can be lower than two separate cabs.

Do Elly8.net prices go up in traffic or at night?

No. The price is fixed when you book and does not change with traffic, time of day or demand. Tolls and parking are billed at cost, and waiting beyond the included time after a tracked landing is billed at cost. The chauffeur's time stuck in traffic is not added to your bill.

Where does the chauffeur meet you at DFW?

Inside the terminal, at arrivals or baggage claim, with a name board. For international arrivals the chauffeur waits at the exit after Customs. Give your flight number when you book so the chauffeur can track the landing; complimentary waiting after a tracked landing is included in the price.

What does a car from DFW to Fort Worth cost?

An Elly8.net business sedan from DFW to downtown Fort Worth is US$220 all-in, a business SUV US$290 and an Executive Sprinter US$575. The drive is about 24 miles (39 km), roughly 33 minutes on a clear road. TEXRail from Terminal B is the budget option for a solo traveller.
