An Uber from SFO starts with a walk. At the domestic terminals, Uber and Lyft pick up on Level 5 of the Domestic Garage, and at the International Terminal on a centre island one level up from arrivals. A taxi is closer, waiting at the centre islands outside baggage claim, and runs on a regulated meter plus a US$6 airport fee. A pre-booked private car from Elly8.net meets you inside with a name board and costs a fixed US$180 to Union Square in a Business Sedan.
So the choice at SFO is less about which is cheapest and more about the 15 minutes after you land: how far you walk with bags, whether the price can move, and who is waiting. The taxi is usually the cheapest door-to-door option for one or two people. The app ride can be cheaper or much dearer depending on the hour. The chauffeur costs more and removes the variables. This guide walks through each one at SFO specifically, then gives a straight verdict by type of traveller.
Is an Uber from SFO cheaper than a taxi or a private car?
Usually, but not always. A taxi from SFO to Union Square runs about US$52 on distance plus a US$6 SFO fee, traffic minutes and tip. App prices are set at the moment you request and rise at busy times. An Elly8.net Business Sedan is a fixed US$180, all-in, with gratuity and meet and greet included.
The honest answer depends on demand. On a quiet weekday afternoon, an app ride and a taxi land in a similar range. On a Friday evening, during a big conference at Moscone or after a cluster of long-haul arrivals, app prices climb while the taxi meter does not. The pre-booked car sits above both on a normal day and does not move on a bad one.

Where Uber and Lyft pick you up at SFO
SFO keeps app rides away from the arrivals curb. According to SFO's Lyft, Uber and Wingz page, domestic pickups are on Level 5 of the Domestic Garage, with a pickup area in the garage core matched to each terminal:
- Harvey Milk Terminal 1: gates A/B and B
- Terminal 2: gates C and D
- Terminal 3: gates E, F and F/G
At the International Terminal, Lyft, Uber and Wingz pick up on the Departures/Ticketing level roadway, centre island zones 12 to 17. That means arrivals passengers go back up a level after customs and baggage claim. Uniformed coordinators work the zones from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m.
There is one exception worth knowing. The app "Black" products, Uber Black, Black SUV and Lyft Black, pick up at the Arrivals level of the domestic terminals: Terminal 1 at Doors 7 and 8, Terminal 2 at Doors 4 and 5, and Terminal 3 between United Blue Signs 8 and 10. If you book a premium app ride, you skip the garage walk. You still wait for a driver to be assigned and to reach the door, and the price is still set by demand at that moment. Our Uber Black vs a pre-booked chauffeur guide goes deeper on that trade.
SFO also lists autonomous rides with Waymo as available to select Waymo users, as the final phase of a pilot programme. Check the app for whether you qualify.
What the garage walk means in practice
With a carry-on, Level 5 is a few minutes away. With two checked bags, a stroller and a tired child, it is a lift ride, a walk through the garage and a wait at a pillar while you watch the car icon creep closer. Wheelchair-accessible vehicles can be requested at the domestic curbside, and Level 5 is accessible too. None of this is a reason to avoid the apps, but it is worth knowing before you promise someone you will be at the hotel in half an hour.
Where taxis pick up, and what the meter says
Taxis leave from designated zones at the roadway centre islands on the Arrivals/Baggage Claim level of every terminal, according to SFO's taxi page. Coordinators are stationed there from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m., and a wheelchair-accessible taxi can be requested from the coordinator.
The meter is set by the city. Per the SFMTA taxi fare schedule, it is US$4.15 for the first fifth of a mile, US$0.65 for each additional fifth of a mile and US$0.65 for each minute of waiting or slow traffic. A US$6 SFO pick-up fee is added for rides starting at the airport, and there is no luggage surcharge. On the roughly 15 miles (24 km) to Union Square, the distance alone comes to about US$52, so a typical fare lands in the high US$50s before any slow-traffic minutes and the tip.
Two details matter for longer trips. Destinations more than 15 miles beyond San Francisco or SFO are charged at 150% of the meter, and passengers pay bridge tolls. That makes a taxi to the East Bay hills or deep into Silicon Valley more expensive than the downtown fare suggests. Our companion piece, Uber from San Francisco Airport, destination by destination, works through those routes with the city's own taxi estimates.
One more SFO detail that surprises visitors: San Francisco taxis can also be booked through approved apps with an upfront fare based on the estimated meter, and SFMTA notes that a request made in the Uber app may be matched with a San Francisco taxicab.
Where a private car meets you
A pre-booked chauffeur does not use the app zones or the taxi islands. SFO does not allow vehicles to wait at the curb, so the chauffeur parks and comes inside. The airport's suggested meeting points are where we meet you:
- International Terminal: the signed Meeting Point at the US Customs and Immigration exit in the Arrivals level lobby, which serves international and some domestic arrivals.
- Terminal 1: seating near the B gate exits, or the signed Meeting Point near the C gate exits on the Departures level.
- Terminal 2: the signed Meeting Point near the D gate exits on the Departures level.
- Terminal 3: the signed Meeting Point between Baggage Carousels 3 and 4, or by the E gate exit.
The chauffeur tracks the flight, holds a name board, helps with bags and walks you to the car. Complimentary waiting starts after a tracked landing rather than at the scheduled time, which is what makes a delayed long-haul arrival painless. More on how airport meet and greet works.
The numbers side by side
| Option | Where you board | Price to Union Square | Price can change? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Uber or Lyft | Domestic Garage Level 5, or International Departures level zones 12-17 | set by the app at request | yes, with demand | solo or two travellers, off-peak, flexible |
| Uber Black or Lyft Black | Arrivals level doors | set by the app at request | yes, with demand | a premium car without pre-booking |
| SF taxi | Arrivals level centre islands | about US$52 on distance plus US$6 fee, traffic time and tip | yes, with traffic | one or two people, short notice |
| Elly8.net Business Sedan | inside, at the meeting point | US$180 fixed, all-in | no | late flights, meetings, guaranteed pickup |
| Elly8.net Business SUV | inside, at the meeting point | US$235 fixed, all-in | no | families, up to 6 bags |
| Elly8.net Executive Sprinter | inside, at the meeting point | US$470 fixed, all-in | no | groups of up to 12 with bags |
The Elly8.net fares include the chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost. First Class SUV and First Class Sedan sit between the columns at US$290 and US$315. The full grid, including round trips from US$345, is in the San Francisco price panel.
When the app or the taxi is the better choice
We book cars for a living and we will still tell you to take the taxi or the app in plenty of cases:
- You are one person with a carry-on, landing in daylight, staying at a hotel that is easy to find.
- You land at 2 p.m. on a Tuesday and nothing big is happening in the city.
- You are going somewhere short, such as an airport hotel in Burlingame or Millbrae. Many of those hotels run their own free courtesy shuttles, which we cover in SFO shuttle vs private car.
- You are heading to a hotel right on Market Street, in which case BART from the International Terminal is also worth a look: the adult fare to Powell Street is US$11.80 and the ride takes about half an hour, per BART.
In those situations a taxi in the high US$50s, or an app ride at a normal price, is good value and a fixed US$180 is hard to justify.
When a pre-booked car wins at SFO
The calculation changes quickly once one of these is true:
- The flight is late. An 11:40 p.m. landing after a delayed connection is when queues, surge and tired decisions pile up. A chauffeur who has watched the flight all evening is already there.
- There are three or more of you, or real luggage. A sedan takes up to 3 passengers and 2 bags, an SUV up to 6 and 6, and the Executive Sprinter up to 12 and 12. A family of five with ski bags does not fit one standard app car.
- There are small children. Child seats are available on request and are fitted before you land. App rides and taxis rarely carry them.
- Someone has a meeting within an hour of landing. The price does not move with demand, and the chauffeur goes straight from the meeting point to the address on the booking.
- The trip is going on an expense report. A fixed price confirmed in advance, and monthly invoicing on a corporate account, is simpler than a stack of variable receipts. Our guide to San Francisco executive car service covers how that works for travel managers.
- It is a convention week. When thousands of attendees land for a Moscone show, every app queue in the city lengthens at once.
For groups of four, the per-person maths also narrows. Four travellers in a Business SUV at US$235 pay under US$60 each, with gratuity included, against two separate app rides or a squeeze into one.
Leaving San Francisco for SFO
The same logic applies in reverse, with one difference: there is no drop-off fee for taxis at SFO, and app drop-offs are at the Departures curb. A taxi from the city to the airport is a good option when you can step out of the hotel and find one. Before a 6 a.m. flight, a pre-booked pickup confirmed the night before removes the gamble on how quickly a car appears. A round trip SFO to Union Square is priced from US$345 in a Business Sedan, less than two one-way fares.

Frequently asked questions
Where is the Uber pickup at SFO?
For the domestic terminals, Uber and Lyft pick up on Level 5 of the Domestic Garage, in the garage core area matched to your terminal. At the International Terminal, pickups are on the Departures/Ticketing level roadway, centre island zones 12 to 17. Uber Black and Black SUV pick up at the Arrivals level doors of Terminals 1, 2 and 3. The app tells you the exact zone when the driver is assigned.
How much is a taxi from SFO to downtown San Francisco?
The SFMTA meter runs US$4.15 for the first fifth of a mile and US$0.65 per additional fifth of a mile or minute of slow traffic, plus a US$6 SFO pick-up fee. The roughly 15 miles to Union Square come to about US$52 on distance alone, so expect the high US$50s or more once traffic and a tip are added.
How much is a private car from SFO to Union Square?
An Elly8.net Business Sedan is US$180, a Business SUV US$235, a First Class SUV US$290, a First Class Sedan US$315 and an Executive Sprinter US$470. Every price is fixed and all-in, covering the chauffeur, vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet. Tolls, parking and extra waiting are billed at cost.
Where will my chauffeur meet me at SFO?
Inside the terminal with a name board, at the airport's suggested meeting points: the Customs exit Meeting Point in the International Terminal, near the gate exits in Terminals 1 and 2, and between Baggage Carousels 3 and 4 in Terminal 3. Vehicles cannot wait at the SFO curb, so the chauffeur walks you to the car.
Is surge pricing a risk on SFO app rides?
App fares are set by the app when you request, and they rise when demand is high: late evenings with many arrivals, bad weather and big conference weeks. A pre-booked chauffeur price is confirmed when you book and does not change on the day, apart from tolls, parking or extra waiting billed at cost.
Can I get a child seat from SFO?
Yes, with a pre-booked car. Child seats are available on request; give the ages and number of children in the booking and the chauffeur arrives with the seats fitted. For a family with several children and bags, a Business SUV or an Executive Sprinter gives the space a standard app car cannot.
