Most comparisons of an Uber from San Francisco Airport stop at downtown. That is the one route where the cheap options are strongest: BART runs straight to Market Street for US$11.80 and a metered taxi lands in the high US$50s. Go further, to Mountain View, Napa or the Berkeley hills, and the numbers rearrange themselves, because taxis switch to 150% of the meter beyond 15 miles and app prices stretch with distance and demand.
This guide takes the destinations people actually book from SFO and puts the published numbers next to each other: San Francisco's official taxi fare estimates, BART fares and fixed, all-in Elly8.net prices. App fares are not published, so we describe how they behave rather than guess at a number. If you want the airport side of the story, where each option picks you up and how far you walk, read our companion piece on SFO Uber, taxi or private car first.
How much is an Uber from San Francisco Airport compared with a taxi?
Uber and Lyft do not publish fixed SFO fares; the app quotes a price when you request, and it rises with demand. For comparison, the city estimates a taxi from SFO at about US$166 to Mountain View and US$350 to Napa, before tolls and tip. Elly8.net fixed prices run from US$180 to Union Square to US$390 to Napa.
Those taxi figures come from the SFMTA taxi fare page, which publishes a table of estimates from SFO and from the city to dozens of Bay Area towns, updated in June 2026. They include the US$6 SFO pick-up fee but not tolls, tips, or waiting and slow-traffic time. Use them as a floor, not a quote.

Taxi estimates exclude tolls, tips and traffic time. BART fares are adult fares from the SFO BART station. Elly8.net prices are per vehicle and include the chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet; tolls and parking are billed at cost.
SFO to Union Square and the Financial District
This is the route where we are most likely to tell you not to book us. BART leaves from the International Terminal, the adult fare to Powell Street or Montgomery Street is US$11.80, and a mid-afternoon train takes about 28 minutes. For a solo traveller with a carry-on and a hotel near Market Street, that is excellent value.
The taxi is the next step up. The meter is US$4.15 for the first fifth of a mile, then US$0.65 per fifth of a mile and per minute of slow traffic, plus the US$6 airport fee. On the roughly 15 miles (24 km) to Union Square, the distance alone is about US$52. App fares on this route are often in the same neighbourhood off-peak and higher at busy times.
An Elly8.net Business Sedan to Union Square is US$180, a Business SUV US$235 and an Executive Sprinter US$470. The premium buys a chauffeur waiting inside, a price that does not change with traffic on US-101, and room for a family or a team. Four people in an SUV pay under US$60 each with gratuity included. Book the downtown route if the flight lands late, if there are children who need seats, or if someone walks straight into a meeting.
SFO to Silicon Valley
Heading south, the picture shifts. Transit means BART to Millbrae and a change to Caltrain, which SFO describes as running between San Francisco and San Jose, with express trains in weekday commute hours and less frequent trains at weekends. It works well with light luggage and a timetable in hand.
The SFMTA estimates a taxi from SFO at about US$166 to Mountain View, US$148 to Palo Alto, US$185 to Sunnyvale, US$206 to Santa Clara and US$260 to downtown San Jose, each with the 150% out-of-town rate applied. App fares on these longer runs vary widely with the hour; the evening peak southbound is when they climb.
Elly8.net prices SFO to Mountain View at US$255 in a Business Sedan, US$335 in a Business SUV and US$665 in an Executive Sprinter, fixed. The gap with a taxi is smaller than on the downtown run, and the car is booked before you board. If your flight choice is flexible, landing at San Jose is often simpler: SJC to Mountain View is US$145 in a Business Sedan. Both routes are on our San Jose and Silicon Valley car service page.
SFO to Napa and wine country
Napa has no rail link from the airport, so the realistic choices are a taxi, an app ride or a pre-booked car. SFO's scheduled airporter buses serve Marin, Sonoma and Monterey counties, not Napa. The SFMTA estimate for a taxi from SFO to Napa is about US$350, with tolls and tip on top, and app fares for a trip of about 59 miles (94 km) depend heavily on when you request.
Here the fixed price is close to the meter. An Elly8.net Business Sedan from SFO to downtown Napa is US$390, a Business SUV US$510 and an Executive Sprinter US$1,015 for a group with bags. Gratuity is already in that number. For a couple arriving for a long weekend, the difference between a taxi plus tip and a fixed car is small, and the car does not need to be found at the curb. See the Napa Valley car service page for transfers and winery days, or book the 10-hour Napa day trip from a San Francisco hotel, priced from US$920 in a Business Sedan.
SFO to Oakland and the East Bay
BART is strong here too: US$12.20 to 12th Street Oakland and US$12.60 to Downtown Berkeley at the adult fare. The SFMTA estimates a taxi from SFO to Oakland at about US$110 and to Berkeley at about US$99, with bridge tolls paid by the passenger. Many East Bay trips are better started at Oakland airport, which is about 20 miles (32 km) from Union Square; OAK to Union Square with Elly8.net is from US$215.
For East Bay addresses from SFO, the web booker quotes a fixed price for the exact door. It is worth comparing against the taxi estimate before you decide.
Time of day changes everything
The same route can be a sensible app ride at 2 p.m. and a poor one at 11 p.m.:
- Late evening and overnight. Many long-haul flights land in the evening. App wait times and prices rise when several wide-bodies arrive together, and BART service hours are limited overnight. SFO notes that SamTrans runs around the clock from the airport, with late-night routes toward San Francisco, Daly City and Palo Alto, which is a real option for a budget traveller.
- Weekday commute peaks. US-101 is slow in both directions. A metered taxi charges for slow-traffic minutes; a fixed price does not change.
- Convention weeks. When the RSAC 2027 Conference fills Moscone from April 5 to 8, 2027, or Dreamforce returns from September 21 to 23, 2027, app demand from SFO spikes with thousands of attendees landing on the same days.
- Weekend mornings. Usually the easiest time for any option.
Passengers, bags and the per-person maths
Every number above is per vehicle, not per person, and that is where the comparison often turns. San Francisco taxis carry a small group for one meter fare, and the SFMTA rules add no luggage surcharge, so two or three people with modest bags do well in a cab. A standard app car fits a similar load. Once the group grows, or the luggage includes golf bags, strollers or sample cases, the options narrow fast: two app rides double the cost and split the group.
An Elly8.net Business Sedan takes up to 3 passengers and 2 bags, a Business SUV up to 6 and 6, and an Executive Sprinter up to 12 and 12. Six colleagues heading to Mountain View in one Business SUV pay US$335 together, under US$56 each with gratuity included. Twelve guests in a Sprinter to Napa pay US$1,015 between them, about US$85 each. The fleet page shows each class.
Going back to SFO
For the return trip, a taxi from the city to the airport is estimated by SFMTA at about US$56, and there is no drop-off fee at SFO. App drop-offs are at the Departures curb. Both work well if you can find a car quickly. For a 6 a.m. departure from a hotel in the hills, a pickup confirmed the night before takes the guesswork out. The Elly8.net round trip SFO to Union Square is US$345 in a Business Sedan, less than two one-way fares, and the same chauffeur desk handles both legs. If you are weighing a shared shuttle for the airport run, our SFO shuttle vs private car guide covers what still exists.
A fair verdict by traveller
- Solo, light bag, downtown, daytime: BART. Nothing beats US$11.80.
- Two people, downtown, normal hours: taxi or app ride.
- Family with child seats, any destination: pre-booked SUV. Seats are fitted before you land.
- Silicon Valley meeting the same afternoon: pre-booked sedan to the office, or fly into SJC.
- Napa weekend: the fixed car and the taxi estimate are close; book the car for the meeting inside and the certainty.
- Team of eight with equipment: an Executive Sprinter, one vehicle and one price.
Corporate travellers who make these runs often can put every ride on one monthly invoice through a corporate account, with cost centres on each line. Our corporate car service page explains how.

Frequently asked questions
How much is an Uber from San Francisco Airport to downtown?
Uber does not publish a fixed fare; the app quotes a price at the moment you request, and it rises at busy times. As a benchmark, a taxi to Union Square is about US$52 on distance plus a US$6 airport fee and traffic time, and BART is US$11.80. A fixed Elly8.net Business Sedan is US$180 all-in.
Is a taxi or an Uber cheaper from SFO to Silicon Valley?
It depends on the hour. The city's taxi estimates from SFO are about US$148 to Palo Alto and US$166 to Mountain View, excluding tolls and tip, and the 150% out-of-town rate applies. App prices can be lower off-peak and higher at the evening peak. Elly8.net prices SFO to Mountain View at US$255 fixed, gratuity included.
What is the best way from SFO to Napa?
There is no rail link, so it is a taxi, an app ride or a pre-booked car. The SFMTA estimates a taxi at about US$350 before tolls and tip. An Elly8.net Business Sedan is US$390 fixed and all-in, with the chauffeur meeting you inside. For four to six people with bags, a Business SUV at US$510 is the usual choice.
Do taxis charge more for longer trips from SFO?
Yes. For trips more than 15 miles from SFO or San Francisco that do not end in the city, the fare is 150% of the meter, with some exceptions for trips passing through San Francisco to Marin or the East Bay. Passengers also pay bridge tolls. Inside the city the normal meter and US$6 airport fee apply.
Can I book a fixed price for an address not on your list?
Yes. The Elly8.net web booker quotes any pickup and drop-off before you pay, including Palo Alto, Oakland, Berkeley and downtown San Jose. The price it shows is fixed and all-in, with tolls and parking billed at cost. Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup.
