A SeaTac airport shuttle can mean four different things: a shared or private door-to-door van, a scheduled airporter bus to towns outside Seattle, a free hotel or off-site parking courtesy shuttle, or the free Train-to-Plane shuttle that links the terminal with Link light rail. Each picks up in a different place, runs on a different timetable and suits a different traveler. A pre-booked private car from Elly8.net is the alternative: from US$170 to downtown Seattle in a Business Sedan, fixed and all-in, with the chauffeur waiting inside at baggage claim.
For a solo traveler staying at an airport hotel, the courtesy shuttle is free and is the obvious choice. For one person heading downtown with light bags, Link light rail at US$3.00 is excellent value. For families, groups, cruise passengers and anyone landing late, the comparison gets closer than most people expect, because a private car is priced per vehicle, not per seat. This guide lays out each option with the Port of Seattle's own pickup details, and says plainly when each one wins.
Is a shuttle or a private car better from SeaTac?
A shuttle is better for solo travelers and airport hotel guests: hotel shuttles are free and Link light rail costs US$3.00. A private car is better for families, groups, heavy luggage, late flights and fixed schedules. An Elly8.net Business SUV to downtown is US$225 for up to six passengers, door to door, with no stops for other riders.
The rest of this guide explains why, option by option. Rides in Seattle are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk.

Hotel and off-site courtesy shuttles
Many airport-area hotels and park-and-fly lots run their own free shuttles. The Port of Seattle's courtesy shuttle page says they pick up and drop off on the courtesy island shuttle lane on the third floor of the parking garage, at Islands 1A to 1D, 2A and 3A to 3C. You cross the skybridge from the terminal, find your hotel's island and wait for the next loop.
When it wins: you are staying near the airport on International Boulevard, in SeaTac, Burien or Kent, and your hotel runs one. It is free, and the ride is short. There is no reason to book a car for that trip.
When it does not: the shuttle only goes to the hotel or lot that runs it, frequencies vary by property and time of day, and the last loop may be earlier than your flight. If you land at 11:30 p.m. with two children, check the hotel's hours before relying on it.
Link light rail and the Train-to-Plane shuttle
Seattle has a direct rail link from the airport to downtown. The Port's Link light rail page describes it as a 38-minute ride to downtown Seattle. From baggage claim you go up to the fourth floor and cross the skybridge to the garage, then follow the signs to the station. If you would rather not walk, the Port runs a free Train-to-Plane shuttle between the centre of the garage and the station, seven days a week from 5 a.m. to midnight.
The adult fare on the 1 and 2 Lines is US$3.00 one way, riders 18 and under travel free, and senior and disabled fares are US$1.00, according to Sound Transit's fare page.
When it wins: one or two travelers with carry-ons, staying within a short walk of a downtown station, arriving during the day. For that traveler, Link is the best value out of SEA, and we would book it ourselves.
When it does not: Link is station to station, so you still need to reach the hotel from your stop, often uphill. It does not run overnight. The Sound Transit timetable shows no trains at the SeaTac/Airport station in the small hours, roughly between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m.; the Port notes that King County Metro Route 124 runs on the airport drives in that window. And it is a poor fit for large suitcases, strollers and car seats.
Shared and private door-to-door vans
The airport has a door-to-door shuttle operator with a kiosk on the third floor of the parking garage. According to the Port's door-to-door shuttle page, it offers shared and private van service to any home, hotel or business address across the Greater Puget Sound area, from Seattle and Bellevue to Tacoma, Everett and Olympia, plus seasonal scheduled cruise ship and downtown transfers. Rates and reservations are on the operator's own site.
How a shared van works. You share the van with other passengers going in the same general direction. That keeps the cost down, but it means the van may wait to fill and may make other riders' stops before yours. The Port does not publish shared fares, so check the operator's rate for your address and party size before comparing.
When it wins: a single traveler or a couple heading to a suburb that is a long, expensive ride for any private vehicle, with time to spare.
When a private car is closer than it looks: the private car fare is per vehicle. If you are four adults, compare the shared van's price for four seats with US$225 for an Elly8.net Business SUV to downtown, which takes up to six passengers and six bags and goes straight to your door. For six people with luggage, the per-head cost of a single SUV is under US$40.
Scheduled airporters to towns outside Seattle
Regional airporter buses connect SEA with places such as Bellingham, the Kitsap Peninsula, Port Angeles and central Washington. The Port's airporter page says scheduled airporters pick up on the Arrivals Drive at the baggage claim level, near Door 00 by TSA Checkpoint 1, with several regional services near Door 02 at the south end.
When it wins: you are travelling a long way outside the Seattle area on your own or as a couple, and a bus at a set time suits your flight. A private car to those towns is a long, priced-in-the-booker trip; the airporter is designed for exactly this.
When it does not: the departures are scheduled, so a delayed flight can mean waiting for the next bus. Groups of four or more going to the same address often find a private car competitive once every ticket is added up.
The private car: what you pay for
An Elly8.net car is a different kind of product rather than a faster shuttle. The chauffeur tracks your flight and waits inside at baggage claim with a name board, the airport meet and greet that is included in every airport fare, so you do not walk to the garage. Complimentary waiting starts after a tracked landing. The car goes directly to your address, and the price is fixed at the booking.
| SEA to downtown Seattle | One way | Round trip | Capacity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business Sedan | US$170 | US$325 | up to 3 passengers, 2 bags |
| Business SUV | US$225 | US$430 | up to 6 passengers, 6 bags |
| First Class Sedan | US$300 | US$570 | up to 3 passengers, 2 bags |
| First Class SUV | US$275 | US$525 | up to 6 passengers, 6 bags |
| Executive Sprinter | US$445 | US$850 | up to 12 passengers, 12 bags |
Prices include the chauffeur, vehicle, taxes, a standard gratuity and the airport meet and greet. Tolls and parking are billed at cost. Addresses off the grid, such as Bellevue or Tacoma, are priced in the web booker. Our Seattle airport car service walkthrough explains each step from landing to drop-off.
Wait time: where the minutes go
Most of the time difference between a shuttle and a private car is not on the road. It is at the airport.
- Walking to the pickup. Courtesy shuttles, door-to-door vans, taxis and app rides all start on the third floor of the garage, reached across the skybridges. Link adds the walk or shuttle to the station. With meet and greet, you walk from the carousel to the car with the chauffeur.
- Waiting for the vehicle. A shared van or a courtesy shuttle runs on its own cycle. A pre-booked car is already there.
- Other riders' stops. A shared van may drop others first. A private car does not.
- The late-night crunch. The Port of Seattle notes that the arrivals drives are often congested from 8 p.m. to midnight, which is also when many long-haul flights land.
On the road itself, downtown is about 15 miles (24 km) and 24 minutes on a clear road, longer at peaks, for any vehicle. Taxis and app rides share the same garage pickup floor; our Seattle airport Uber vs taxi vs private car guide compares those two directly.
Comfort: bags, children and long-haul fatigue
Comfort is where the private car pulls ahead for families. Child seats are available on request and are fitted before pickup. Large cases go in the trunk without negotiation, and nobody holds a toddler on a crowded platform. For travelers stepping off an overnight flight, a quiet car straight to the door is worth more than the fare difference. For corporate travelers who need to take a call on the way in, it is the only option that works. The general comparison is on our chauffeur versus airport shuttle page.
Cruise passengers
Cruise passengers face a specific version of this choice. Some cruise lines sell motor coach transfers from SEA, and the airport's door-to-door operator runs seasonal cruise transfers. There is no direct transit from the airport to either cruise terminal, according to the Port's Bell Street Cruise Terminal page. For the cost of each option to the piers, see Seattle airport to the cruise port by Uber, taxi or chauffeur, and for timing on sailing day, the Seattle airport cruise transfer guide.
A quick way to decide
Ask three questions. How many of you are there, and how many large bags? If the answer is one person and a carry-on, Link or a hotel shuttle is the right call. What time do you land? Late evening and the small hours favour a pre-booked car, because Link pauses overnight and the arrivals drives are busiest from 8 p.m. to midnight. Does a fixed price matter? If a company or a tight budget needs the number in advance, only the pre-booked car gives it. Most travelers who answer "two or more", "late" or "yes" to those questions end up better served by a car booked before they fly.
How to book a private car instead
- Enter the pickup and drop-off, with your flight number so the desk can track it.
- Choose the vehicle by passengers and bags; the fleet guide shows the space in each.
- Reserve now or use the web booker. Downtown routes check out with Reserve now; other addresses are priced in the booker. Confirmation arrives by email.
Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup. At 72 hours or less the charge is 10%, at 48 hours or less 50%, and at 24 hours or less or a no-show 100%, refunded to the original card. More on how the network handles airport transfers is on the service page, and every Seattle price is on the Seattle car service page.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free shuttle from SeaTac airport?
Yes, for some destinations. Many airport-area hotels and off-site parking lots run free courtesy shuttles from the third floor of the parking garage, and the Port runs a free Train-to-Plane shuttle to the Link light rail station from 5 a.m. to midnight.
How much is the shuttle from SeaTac to downtown Seattle?
The cheapest option is Link light rail, at US$3.00 for adults and free for riders 18 and under. Door-to-door van rates are set by the operator and depend on the address and party size. An Elly8.net Business Sedan to downtown is US$170 per vehicle, fixed and all-in.
Where do shuttles pick up at SeaTac?
Hotel and off-site courtesy shuttles and the door-to-door van kiosk are on the third floor of the parking garage, across the skybridges. Scheduled airporter buses pick up on the Arrivals Drive near Door 00 and Door 02. An Elly8.net chauffeur meets you inside at baggage claim.
Is a private car cheaper than a shuttle for a family?
It can be. A private car is priced per vehicle, so an Elly8.net Business SUV at US$225 to downtown carries up to six passengers and six bags for one price. Compare that with the shared fare multiplied by the number of seats your family needs.
What about flights that land after midnight?
Link does not run in the small hours, and hotel shuttles may have stopped. A pre-booked car is the most reliable choice: the desk tracks the flight, the chauffeur waits inside at baggage claim, and complimentary waiting starts after a tracked landing.
