For most short trips around Columbus, a taxi or a rideshare is the sensible choice: the city is spread out but easy to drive, distances between downtown, the Short North and German Village are short, and app cars are usually a few minutes away. The calculation changes on the days Columbus is busiest, an Ohio State home game, a big night at Nationwide Arena, a convention week, when waits lengthen and app prices climb.

This guide covers how each option is priced, what to expect from waits on ordinary and busy days, where COTA's US$2.00 bus pass fits, and when booking a car in advance is the better call. An Elly8.net chauffeur in Columbus starts at US$95 an hour in a business sedan (3-hour minimum), and an evening out package with the car waiting all night is US$475, fixed and all-in.

Is a taxi or rideshare cheaper in Columbus?

For one or two people on an ordinary day, a taxi or an app ride is usually cheaper around Columbus, and COTA's US$2.00 two-hour pass is cheaper still. On game days and big event nights app prices rise with demand, and a fixed-price car, from US$475 for an evening, often works out better for a group.

Taxis in Columbus run on the meter. Rideshare apps price each trip when you request it, and the price moves with demand, so the same ride from the Short North to German Village can cost very different amounts at 7 pm on a Tuesday and at 11 pm after a Saturday game. Neither publishes a fixed fare for in-town trips, which is why this guide describes the rules rather than inventing numbers.

How Columbus taxis work

Columbus taxis run on a meter. Away from the airport, the dependable way to get one is to book by phone or app rather than count on a street hail, and at the airport cabs wait on the ground transportation level, where the airport keeps a Taxi Management line, 614.239.TAXI, for questions, according to John Glenn Columbus International. Ask for a fare estimate when you book, and confirm payment by card if you need it.

Taxis have two real advantages. The meter does not surge, so a taxi on a busy night costs what the distance and time say. And at the airport there is a dedicated line, which saves the walk to an app pickup area. Our Columbus airport taxi guide covers CMH in detail.

How rideshare works in Columbus

Uber and Lyft both operate in Columbus and are the authorized app services at CMH, with premium tiers where the apps offer them. The price is set when you request, and demand pricing applies when many people ask for rides at once. At the airport, app riders go to the arrivals level, cross the Arrivals drive to the ground transportation area and wait between the columns to the right.

On an ordinary weekday, an app car around downtown or the Short North typically arrives within minutes. Waits and prices both rise in predictable places:

  • After an Ohio State home game, when tens of thousands leave the campus area at once and roads around the stadium are closed or congested.
  • When the Arena District empties, after a Blue Jackets game or a concert at Nationwide Arena, or a Crew match at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field nearby.
  • On Short North weekend nights, especially on High Street at closing time.
  • In bad weather and on convention days, when downtown hotels are full.

Before a big weekend, check the calendar on Experience Columbus, the city's tourism bureau, and the Ohio State athletics schedule, because the busy nights are the ones to plan a ride for in advance. For the bigger picture on premium app rides versus a pre-booked chauffeur, see Uber Black vs a pre-booked chauffeur.

COTA: the cheapest way around

The Central Ohio Transit Authority runs the city's bus network. According to COTA fares, a standard fare is US$2.00 for a two-hour pass with free transfers, a day pass valid until midnight is US$4.50, and children aged 4 and under ride free. COTA's frequent lines run every 15 minutes or less through the day. For a solo traveller going up and down High Street, between downtown, the Short North and the campus, the bus is excellent value.

The bus is less suited to late nights, groups with bags, families with car seats and trips to the outer suburbs, where the route may involve a transfer and a long wait.

When a taxi or rideshare is the right call

We would tell you to skip a booking in these cases:

  • A single short trip. Downtown to the Short North or German Village is a few minutes by any car.
  • No fixed time. If you will leave dinner when you leave, an app car responds in minutes.
  • One or two people, off-peak. A taxi or app ride will almost always cost less than a booked car.
  • Up and down High Street alone. Take COTA for US$2.00.

When to book a car instead

A pre-booked chauffeur earns its fare in Columbus in these situations:

  • Ohio State Saturdays. The desk agrees a drop-off point near your gate or tailgate lot and a pickup a short walk from the crowds, and the car is there after the game. An Executive Sprinter keeps a group of up to 12 together. See sports event transportation.
  • A night with several stops. Dinner in the Short North, a show, drinks in the Arena District: the evening out package keeps one car and chauffeur with you, at US$475 in a business sedan or US$600 in a Business SUV.
  • A business day across the suburbs. Columbus employers are spread from downtown to Dublin, New Albany and Polaris. An hourly booking keeps the car waiting between meetings; see corporate car service.
  • Families and car seats. Child seats are available on request, fitted before pickup.
  • Clients and visitors. A name board and a fixed time remove the guesswork for someone who does not know the city.
  • A celebration. For birthdays and bachelor or bachelorette nights, read our Columbus party bus guide.

A worked example: an Ohio State Saturday for eight

Eight friends staying downtown want to go to the game, eat afterwards in the Short North and get back to the hotel. By app, that is at least two cars there, which is manageable, and two or three cars back from the stadium area after the final whistle, when demand pricing and closed roads are at their worst, then two more from dinner to the hotel.

With an Executive Sprinter on the evening out package, it is one vehicle for US$950, which is about US$119 each across eight as arithmetic for comparison, with a fixed pickup point after the game and the same chauffeur for dinner and the ride home. For a group of four, a Business SUV on the same package is US$600. For two people who are happy to walk a mile from the stadium before requesting a car, the app is cheaper.

Business travellers: receipts, schedules and suburbs

Columbus is a state capital with large employers spread well beyond downtown, from Dublin and New Albany to Polaris and Easton. A visiting executive with three meetings in three suburbs can spend more time waiting for app cars than in meetings, and the expense report ends up with a receipt for every leg. An hourly booking, US$95 an hour in a business sedan or US$155 in a First Class sedan with a 3-hour minimum, keeps one chauffeur waiting outside each stop and produces one receipt. For a full day, the full-day chauffeur starts at US$700 and the corporate roadshow day at US$855.

Companies that travel to Columbus regularly can open a corporate account for monthly invoicing and saved traveller profiles, which replaces the taxi slips entirely. For a single meeting downtown with a flexible return, a taxi is still the simpler answer.

Waits, in practice

Neither the city nor the apps publish average wait times, so treat any number you see with care. What we can say is when waits grow: big events, closing time, bad weather and early mornings before the app driver supply builds up. A pre-booked car does not wait for a match, because the chauffeur is assigned before pickup and the 24/7 desk is watching the booking. For an early flight from CMH, see our step-by-step guide to Columbus airport car service.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a taxi in Columbus, Ohio?

Columbus taxis run on the meter, so the fare depends on distance and time; ask the company for an estimate when you book. For a fixed comparison, an Elly8.net business sedan from CMH to downtown is US$125 all-in, and hourly service starts at US$95 an hour with a 3-hour minimum.

Is Uber or a taxi better after an Ohio State game?

Both struggle in the first hour after a home game, with closed roads and heavy demand. Walking away from the stadium area before requesting helps. For a group, a pre-booked car with an agreed pickup point is the most reliable option.

How much is the COTA bus in Columbus?

A standard COTA fare is US$2.00 for a two-hour pass with free transfers, and a day pass valid until midnight is US$4.50. Children aged 4 and under ride free. Frequent lines run every 15 minutes or less through the day.

Can I get a taxi in Columbus without booking?

At CMH, yes: taxis wait in a line on the ground transportation level. Elsewhere, do not count on a street hail; booking a cab by phone or app is the dependable way. In the busiest nightlife areas, app rides are usually the easiest to find.

When is a pre-booked car worth it in Columbus?

On game days, for nights with several stops, for groups and families with car seats, for client pickups and for business days across the suburbs. For one short trip on an ordinary day, a taxi, an app ride or COTA is cheaper.

What is your cancellation policy?

Free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show. Refunds go back to the original card used to book.
