A Phoenix airport taxi is one of the better deals in American air travel, if you are going to the right place. Sky Harbor sets one rate for every taxi company, and from the airport to a small zone in downtown Phoenix the fare is a flat US$20. Everywhere else the meter runs at US$7 for the first mile and US$2.60 for each additional mile, plus US$36 an hour for traffic delay, with an US$18 minimum.
That means a solo traveller heading to a downtown hotel should usually take the cab. It also means that a trip to Scottsdale, Chandler or a Glendale stadium can cost a good deal more, before the tip, and that a family or group may need two cabs. A pre-booked Elly8.net car is a fixed US$115 in a Business Sedan to downtown Phoenix and US$300 in an Executive Sprinter for up to twelve, all-in. This guide shows where each one makes sense.
How much is a taxi from Phoenix Sky Harbor?
Sky Harbor's taxis charge the same rates whatever the company, passenger count or bag count: US$7 for the first mile, US$2.60 for each additional mile, US$36 an hour for traffic delay and an US$18 minimum. To downtown Phoenix, inside the zone bounded by Roosevelt, Lincoln, Seventh Avenue and Seventh Street, there is a US$20 flat rate.
Those figures come from the airport's taxis and shuttles page, which also says wheelchair-accessible taxis are available on request and that all major credit cards are accepted. The tip is not included in the rate.
Where to find a taxi at each terminal
Sky Harbor runs two passenger terminals, and the taxi stands are on the outer curbs:
- Terminal 3: the north curb, outside door 7.
- Terminal 4: Level 1, on the north curb outside door 7 and the south curb outside door 4.
Baggage claim is on the ground level of both terminals, so from the carousel you walk straight out to the curb. There is no need to book; you join the line and take the next cab. At a busy arrival bank, or late in the evening when many flights land together, the line can be long.

The downtown flat-rate zone, explained
The US$20 flat rate applies only from the airport to downtown Phoenix inside four streets: Roosevelt Street to the north, Lincoln Street to the south, Seventh Avenue to the west and Seventh Street to the east. That box covers the core of downtown, including the area around the Phoenix Convention Center, the arena and the ballpark, and many of the downtown hotels.
If your address is outside that box, even by a few blocks, the meter applies. Midtown on Central Avenue, anything north of Roosevelt Street and anything south of Lincoln Street are meter trips. Check your hotel's address against the four streets before you assume the flat rate, and if you are unsure, ask the driver to confirm the fare before you set off. Knowing the rule in advance is the easiest way to avoid a disagreement at the end of the ride.
Worked meter fares across the Valley
To make the meter concrete, here are estimated fares from Sky Harbor using the airport's published rates and routed road distances. They are before any traffic-delay time, which is charged at US$36 an hour when the cab is slowed, and before the tip.
| From PHX to | Road distance | Clear-road time | Estimated meter (no delay, no tip) | Elly8.net fixed price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Downtown Phoenix, inside the zone | about 5 mi (8 km) | about 11 min | US$20 flat rate | US$115 Business Sedan, US$300 Sprinter |
| Tempe, ASU campus | about 7 mi (11 km) | about 14 min | about US$23 | quoted in the web booker |
| Arizona Biltmore area | about 9 mi (14 km) | about 17 min | about US$27 | quoted in the web booker |
| Old Town Scottsdale | about 10 mi (16 km) | about 19 min | about US$31 | US$140 Business Sedan, US$365 Sprinter |
| Downtown Mesa | about 14 mi (23 km) | about 24 min | about US$41 | quoted in the web booker |
| Downtown Chandler | about 20 mi (32 km) | about 31 min | about US$57 | quoted in the web booker |
| State Farm Stadium, Glendale | about 22 mi (35 km) | about 30 min | about US$61 | quoted in the web booker |
| Phoenix Raceway, Avondale | about 26 mi (42 km) | about 41 min | about US$72 | quoted in the web booker |
The meter estimates are arithmetic on the published rates, not quotes, and real routes vary. The Old Town Scottsdale fixed prices are from our Scottsdale car service page; every other address gets a fixed quote in the web booker as soon as you enter it.
What the meter leaves out
Three things change a taxi fare that a fixed price does not. The first is traffic delay at US$36 an hour, which matters at weekday rush hours and on event nights. The second is the tip, which is on top of the fare. The third is the number of cabs: a standard taxi takes about four passengers and limited luggage, so a group of six with bags may need two, which doubles the bill.
An Elly8.net price includes taxes, the standard gratuity and airport meet and greet, and it is per vehicle, so the number of passengers does not change it. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost. Our post on what Phoenix limo prices include goes through every line of a quote.
When the taxi is the right call
We say this on our own pages because it is true. Take the taxi when:
- You are one or two travellers with light luggage going to a downtown address inside the flat-rate zone. US$20 plus tip is excellent value.
- You land in the middle of the day on an ordinary weekday and the taxi line is short.
- You decided to fly at the last minute and did not book anything.
- You need a wheelchair-accessible vehicle at short notice; the airport says these are available on request.
For a budget traveller, the free PHX Sky Train to the 44th Street station and Valley Metro Rail is cheaper still; our airport shuttle vs private car comparison covers it.
When a pre-booked car wins
A fixed-price chauffeur earns its price when:
- The flight lands late. The chauffeur tracks it and waits inside at baggage claim, with complimentary waiting after a tracked landing.
- You are a family. Child seats are available on request and fitted before pickup. A Business SUV carries up to six with about six large bags for US$150 to downtown.
- You are a group. One Executive Sprinter at US$300 to downtown replaces three cabs, and everyone arrives together.
- You are staying outside the zone. Scottsdale resorts, Paradise Valley and the south-east Valley are meter trips where the fixed price narrows the gap.
- Someone important is arriving. A name board at baggage claim is a better welcome than a taxi line.
- The budget must be fixed. Corporate travellers and travel planners get one price before the trip, with invoicing through a corporate account.
Our Phoenix airport Uber vs taxi vs private car guide adds rideshare to the comparison, and the chauffeur vs taxi page covers the general case.
The other free option: a friend in the cell phone lot
The cheapest ride from Sky Harbor is a friend or relative with a car, and the airport makes that easier with three free, 24-hour cell phone waiting lots: east of Terminal 4, west of the West Economy Garage, and south of the 44th Street Sky Train station. The airport asks drivers to stay with their vehicle and to use the lots for 30 minutes or less, and notes that the information screens show a flight as arrived once it reaches the gate.
It is a good system for one person with a carry-on. It is less good for a 1 a.m. landing, a delayed flight that keeps a relative circling, or a visitor whose friends live in Chandler. That is the gap a pre-booked chauffeur fills: someone whose job is to wait for you, inside, for a price agreed in advance. Compared with a taxi, the question is not only the fare but who carries the uncertainty when the flight is late.
Taxis back to the airport
The airport's flat rate is from the airport to downtown. For the trip back to Sky Harbor you call or hail a cab, or use an app, and the fare follows that service's rules. An Elly8.net airport fare is the same fixed price in either direction: downtown Phoenix to PHX is US$115 in a Business Sedan, and a round trip booked together runs from US$220 in a Business Sedan to US$570 in an Executive Sprinter. For an early flight, a pre-booked pickup at a set time removes the morning scramble.
Event nights and the taxi line
Phoenix has a busy event calendar, and big nights downtown or in Glendale bring crowds to the airport and the roads at the same time. In February 2027, the WM Phoenix Open, spring training and NBA All-Star weekend all fall within a few weeks of each other, and arrivals spike. On weeks like that, taxi lines lengthen and road delays add meter time. A car booked in advance, at a price fixed when you reserve, takes both out of the equation. See sports event transportation and conference transportation for how we plan event weeks.
Who drives
Rides in Phoenix are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer. Elly8.net is a member of LimousineWorldwide.Directory and LimousineAssociation.International. The full price list, including hourly service from US$95 an hour, is on the Phoenix car service page, and airport transfers explains how pickups work in every city.
