For one traveller with a carry-on landing at Phoenix Sky Harbor in the middle of the afternoon, the cheapest sensible way to Scottsdale is usually a taxi or a rideshare. Sky Harbor's taxis run on one published meter, and the 10-mile trip to Old Town comes to about US$30 before traffic delay and tip. That is the honest starting point.
The answer changes with the passengers, the bags, the hour and the week. A family with child seats, a group of ten, golfers with clubs or anyone arriving during the WM Phoenix Open will find that a pre-booked car, fixed from US$140 in a Business Sedan to US$365 in a 12-seat Executive Sprinter, is often the better deal. This guide compares every option with real numbers.
How much is an Uber from Phoenix to Scottsdale?
Uber and Lyft do not publish fixed fares; the price is set in the app at the time of booking and rises with demand. For comparison, Sky Harbor's published taxi meter gives about US$30 to Old Town Scottsdale before delay and tip, and an Elly8.net car is fixed at US$140 to US$365 per vehicle, all-in.
Because rideshare prices are not published, this guide does not invent one. What can be compared is how each option works: where you board, how long you might wait, who supplies child seats and what happens to the price in a busy week. The Scottsdale fares panel lists every Elly8.net price used below.

The four options at a glance
| Option | Price PHX to Old Town | Where you board | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taxi | about US$30 metered, plus delay time and tip | taxi curb, outside door 7 at Terminal 3 | one or two travellers, light bags, quiet hours |
| Rideshare (Uber, Lyft, Uber Black) | set in the app, varies with demand | marked rideshare curbs at each terminal | short notice on ordinary days |
| Light rail, bus and trolley | low fares, several changes | 44th Street Sky Train station | budget trips with light luggage, daytime only |
| Elly8.net pre-booked car | US$140 to US$365 fixed per vehicle, gratuity included | inside arrivals with a name board | late flights, families, golf bags, groups, event weeks |
The distance is about 10 miles (16 km) and around 19 minutes on a clear road to Old Town. Every option uses the same roads, so traffic affects all of them. The difference is who carries the cost of the delay.
Taxi: the published meter
Sky Harbor publishes its taxi rates, and they are the same for every company, every passenger count and every bag count:
- US$7 for the first mile
- US$2.60 for each additional mile
- US$36 an hour for traffic delay
- an US$18 minimum fare
For 10 miles to Old Town, the meter comes to US$7 plus nine miles at US$2.60, which is US$30.40. Traffic delay adds US$36 an hour, or 60 cents a minute, so fifteen slow minutes on the Loop 101 add about US$9. Add a tip on top. The airport's US$20 flat rate applies only to downtown Phoenix, not to Scottsdale.
Taxis load at Terminal 3 on the north curb outside door 7, and at Terminal 4 on Level 1, outside door 7 on the north curb and door 4 on the south curb. Wheelchair-accessible taxis are available on request, and the airport says all major credit cards are accepted.
Verdict: for one or two people with light bags at a quiet hour, the taxi is the value choice. It is less attractive for a large group that needs several cabs, for long traffic delays, and for a family that needs child seats.
Rideshare: Uber, Lyft and Uber Black
Rideshare at Sky Harbor works from marked curbs, and the airport's rideshare page sets them out by terminal. At Terminal 3, pickups use the south outer curb, except its far east end, and the far east end of the north outer curb. At Terminal 4, they use Level 1 outer curbs at the far west end outside door 1 on the north side, and outside doors 2, 6 or 8 on the south side. The same page notes that Waymo autonomous rides use the rideshare locations at both terminals, around the clock.
Three points matter for the comparison:
- Price moves with demand. On an ordinary afternoon, a rideshare to Scottsdale may cost little more than a taxi. In tournament week or on a busy Friday evening, prices climb, and premium tiers such as Uber Black cost more again.
- Child seats are your job. Sky Harbor's guidance is that the parent or guardian is responsible for a car seat or booster on rideshare trips, or for asking the provider whether it can supply one.
- You go to the car. After a long flight, finding the right outer curb and the right vehicle is part of the trip.
Verdict: a good option on ordinary days for travellers who are comfortable with apps and carry their own seats. For a fuller comparison, see chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft and Uber Black vs a pre-booked chauffeur.
Public transport: possible, but not direct
The free PHX Sky Train links the terminals to the 44th Street station, where Valley Metro Rail connects. The light rail serves Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa rather than Scottsdale, so a trip to a Scottsdale hotel means a bus connection as well.
Inside Scottsdale, the Scottsdale Trolley is free, with three fixed routes, 20-minute frequency and connections to nine regional bus routes. It runs Monday to Friday from 5:45 a.m. to 7:45 p.m., so it does not help a weekend or late-evening arrival.
Verdict: a real option for a budget traveller with a backpack, arriving on a weekday in daylight and staying near a trolley route. For most visitors with luggage, the changes outweigh the saving.
Pre-booked chauffeur: what the fixed fare buys
An Elly8.net car from PHX to Old Town Scottsdale costs US$140 in a Business Sedan, US$185 in a Business SUV, US$225 in a First Class SUV, US$245 in a First Class Sedan and US$365 in an Executive Sprinter. The price is per vehicle, fixed before you fly, and includes taxes, standard gratuity and airport meet and greet.
What that buys: a chauffeur who tracks the flight, meets you inside arrivals at baggage claim with a name board and helps with bags; complimentary waiting after a tracked landing; child seats on request; and a price that does not move with traffic, the hour or demand. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost. Worked examples
One traveller, carry-on, 2 p.m. weekday. Taxi at about US$30 plus tip, or a rideshare. A US$140 sedan is hard to justify unless you want to be met inside or the company is paying for a fixed, invoiced fare.
Couple with golf bags, landing at 11 p.m. A taxi still carries two people and two golf bags for about the metered fare. A Business SUV at US$185 adds a person waiting inside arrivals, room for the clubs without negotiation, and a fixed price late at night. Either is reasonable; the choice is about comfort and certainty.
Family of five with two child seats. On a rideshare you bring the seats. A Business SUV at US$185 seats up to six with up to six bags, and the seats are fitted on request before pickup. This is where the pre-booked car clearly wins.
Group of ten for a golf trip. One Executive Sprinter at US$365 carries all ten and their clubs, about US$37 each, with gratuity included. The alternative is several taxis or rideshares, each with its own wait and meter. Our Scottsdale Sprinter van rental guide covers group trips in detail.
Any arrival during WM Phoenix Open week. The WM Phoenix Open is set for February 8-14, 2027, at TPC Scottsdale. Demand for every kind of car is at its highest that week. A fixed fare booked weeks ahead removes the uncertainty.
Downtown Phoenix to Scottsdale, not the airport
Not every Phoenix to Scottsdale trip starts at the airport. From a downtown Phoenix hotel or the Convention Center to Old Town, a rideshare or a taxi called to the hotel is often simplest for one or two people. For a group, a meeting schedule or a night that ends back in Phoenix, enter the addresses in the web booker for a fixed price, or book the hourly chauffeur from US$100 an hour in Scottsdale. The Phoenix car service page lists the downtown fares.
Evenings are a separate question. A group heading from Phoenix to an Old Town night, and back again after midnight, faces the same rideshare surge and the same queue at closing time as everyone else on the street. The Scottsdale evening out and event night package keeps one vehicle with the group from US$500 in a Business Sedan to US$1,000 in a Sprinter, and our Scottsdale bachelorette party bus guide shows how celebration groups plan it.
Going back to the airport
The same logic applies on the way back. The Elly8.net fare from Scottsdale to PHX is the same fixed price, from US$140 to US$365, and a round trip booked together runs from US$270 to US$695. For an early-morning flight from a north Scottsdale resort, a car booked the day before removes the question of whether a ride will accept the trip at 4 a.m.
The verdict
Take the taxi or a rideshare if you are one or two people with light bags at a quiet hour; the published meter makes the taxi easy to predict. Take a pre-booked car when you land late, travel with children and need seats, carry golf bags, travel as a group that can share one vehicle, or arrive in a big event week. Chauffeur vs taxi sets out the same trade-offs for every city.

Frequently asked questions
Is Uber cheaper than a taxi from Phoenix airport to Scottsdale?
Sometimes. Rideshare prices are set in the app and change with demand, so on a quiet afternoon a rideshare may cost about the same as the taxi meter, roughly US$30 to Old Town before tip. In busy weeks or at peak evening hours, rideshare prices rise while the taxi meter stays the same.
How much is a taxi from Sky Harbor to Scottsdale?
Sky Harbor's published rates are US$7 for the first mile, US$2.60 for each additional mile and US$36 an hour for traffic delay, with an US$18 minimum. For the 10 miles to Old Town that is about US$30 before delay time and tip. The US$20 flat rate applies only to downtown Phoenix.
Where do you catch an Uber at Phoenix Sky Harbor?
At marked rideshare curbs. At Terminal 3 they use the south outer curb, except the far east end, and the far east end of the north outer curb. At Terminal 4 they use Level 1 outer curbs at specific doors on the north and south sides. Follow the airport signs and the app.
Can you take the light rail from Phoenix airport to Scottsdale?
Not directly. The free PHX Sky Train connects to Valley Metro Rail at the 44th Street station, but the light rail serves Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa. Reaching Scottsdale needs a bus connection. The free Scottsdale Trolley runs on weekdays from 5:45 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. only.
When is a chauffeur worth it from Phoenix to Scottsdale?
When you land late, travel with children who need seats, carry golf bags, travel as a group that can share one fixed price, or arrive in a big event week. An Elly8.net Business SUV at US$185 or a 12-seat Sprinter at US$365 includes meet and greet and gratuity.
Does the Elly8.net price change with traffic?
No. The fare is fixed per vehicle when you book, and it does not change with traffic, the hour or demand. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost. The same fixed fare applies from Scottsdale back to the airport.
