From DFW Airport, an Uber or Lyft picks up on the upper level curbside of each terminal, a taxi from the stands on the lower level, and a pre-booked chauffeur inside arrivals with a name board. The DART Orange Line leaves from Terminal A Station for a US$3 or US$6 pass. With Elly8.net, a fixed car from DFW to Uptown Dallas is US$200 in a Business Sedan and US$260 in a Business SUV, all-in per vehicle.
Which one is right depends far more on you than on the airport: how many people, how many bags, what time you land and how much a fixed price matters to you. App prices are not published in advance and move with demand, and taxi fares depend on the meter and the traffic, so this guide compares what can be compared honestly and says plainly when the train or an app ride is the better call.
Is Uber or a taxi cheaper than a private car from DFW?
For one or two travellers with light bags at a quiet time, an Uber, Lyft or taxi from DFW is usually cheaper than a pre-booked car, and DART is cheapest at US$3 to US$6. A fixed Elly8.net car, from US$200 to Uptown, wins on late arrivals, groups, heavy luggage, child seats and busy periods when app prices rise.
The fair comparison is not the base fare on a quiet Tuesday. It is what you pay on your actual day, with your actual group and bags, including the time spent waiting at the curb.
The four options at a glance
| Option | Where you find it | Price basis | Luggage and seats | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Uber, Lyft and other apps | Upper level curbside of each terminal | App price, moves with demand | Depends on the car that arrives | One or two travellers, flexible timing |
| Taxi | Lower level stands at Terminals A to E | Meter; no set fare published | Standard cab trunk | Daytime arrivals, no booking needed |
| DART Orange Line or Silver Line, TEXRail | Terminal A Station (Orange) and Terminal B (Silver, TEXRail) | US$3 3-Hour Pass or US$6 Day Pass on DART | Carry what you can wheel yourself | Solo budget travel to stations |
| Elly8.net pre-booked car | Inside arrivals, name board | Fixed per vehicle, all-in | Sedan 2 bags, SUV 6, Sprinter 12 | Families, groups, late flights, business |
Locations are from the airport's ground transportation guide and public transit page; the DART pass prices are from Visit Dallas, which also notes that Terminal A Station sits near Gate A10.
Uber and Lyft from DFW: how it really works
DFW lists Uber, Lyft and several other app services, all picking up at the upper level curbside of each terminal. The routine is simple: collect your bags, request the ride, then head up to the curb and find your car among the others doing the same.
What the app price depends on. The fare is set by the app at the moment you request it. When several big flights land together, when a convention ends or when a storm rolls in, demand rises and so does the price. You see the figure before you accept, which is useful, but you cannot know it before you fly.
Premium tiers. Black and SUV tiers in the apps cost more than the standard tier and give you a larger, newer car. They do not include a driver waiting inside arrivals, and the vehicle class is whatever is available at that moment. Our Uber Black vs a pre-booked chauffeur guide compares the two directly.
The practical catches. Car seats are not guaranteed, an SUV may not be available when five of you step out together, and the curb can be busy at peak times. None of that matters for a solo business traveller with a carry-on at 2 p.m. All of it matters to a family landing at 11 p.m.
Taxis from DFW
Taxi service runs from the lower level of Terminals A, B, C, D and E, with 19 taxi companies listed by the airport. A DFW guest assistant manages the taxi stands between 8 a.m. and midnight. The airport does not publish a set fare to Dallas, so the cost depends on the cab's rates and the traffic on the way. For more detail, including what to do after midnight, read our DFW taxi guide.
A taxi is a sensible choice for two or three adults with normal bags arriving in the daytime, especially if you would rather not use an app.
The train: DART and TEXRail
DFW has rail service at the terminals, which gives budget travellers a real alternative to the road. The DART Orange Line runs from Terminal A Station through Irving to downtown Dallas and on to Plano; the newer DART Silver Line runs from Terminal B across the northern suburbs; and Trinity Metro's TEXRail runs from Terminal B to downtown Fort Worth. Visit Dallas lists a US$3 DART Local 3-Hour Pass or a US$6 Day Pass and says you can reach downtown Dallas from either airport in under an hour.
DART's airport guide adds two practical notes: there are no luggage racks on its light rail cars or buses, and operators do not help with bags, so you must be able to handle your own. If you are travelling light to a hotel near a station, the train is the best-value option and we recommend it.
Elly8.net: what the fixed price buys
Your chauffeur tracks your flight, waits inside arrivals with a name board, helps with the bags and walks you to the car. The price is fixed when you book and includes the chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes, a standard gratuity and meet and greet; tolls and parking are billed at cost. Complimentary waiting after a tracked landing is included, so a delay does not change the price.
| Vehicle | Passengers / bags | DFW to Uptown | Round trip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business Sedan | 3 / 2 | US$200 | US$380 |
| Business SUV / Van | 6 / 6 | US$260 | US$495 |
| First Class SUV | 6 / 6 | US$320 | US$610 |
| First Class Sedan | 3 / 2 | US$350 | US$665 |
| Executive Sprinter | 12 / 12 | US$520 | US$990 |
Uptown is about 21 miles (34 km) from DFW, roughly 27 minutes on a clear road. Other addresses, such as Las Colinas, Plano or Arlington, are priced as a fixed total in the web booker. For Fort Worth, see our Fort Worth car service page. The step-by-step meeting routine is in our DFW car service walkthrough.
Worked examples: what each traveller actually pays
Because app and taxi fares are not published in advance, the most useful comparison is per person on the fixed options, with the app and taxi as the variable.
One traveller to a downtown hotel near a station. DART: US$3 for a 3-Hour Pass. An Elly8.net Business Sedan to Uptown: US$200. The train wins clearly unless you land late, carry heavy bags or need to be somewhere on time.
A family of five with two car seats and five cases. An Elly8.net Business SUV to Uptown: US$260, about US$52 each, seats fitted and six bags of space. An app ride would need an SUV-class car with room for seats you bring yourself, at whatever price the app shows on landing.
A team of ten landing together for a conference. An Executive Sprinter: US$520, US$52 each, everyone and their bags in one vehicle. The alternative is three or four app rides requested at the same curb at the same moment.
A weekend couple, round trip. An Elly8.net Business Sedan round trip to Uptown: US$380, booked once. A taxi or app ride each way may well cost less on quiet days; the round trip buys certainty on the return, when you have a flight to catch.
The costs people forget
- Gratuity. Our prices include a standard gratuity. With a taxi or an app ride, a tip is usually on top of the fare.
- Waiting time. Time at the curb or in a taxi queue is not on any receipt, but after a long flight it is real.
- The return. Booking both directions at once is easy with a fixed price; with an app, the departure-day fare is unknown until you request it.
- Tolls and parking. On an Elly8.net booking these are billed at cost and shown on the receipt.
Verdicts by traveller
- Solo traveller, one carry-on, staying near a DART station. Take the train. It is the cheapest option by far and avoids traffic.
- Solo or a couple, light bags, daytime, staying away from rail. An app ride or a taxi will usually cost less than our sedan. Choose by preference.
- Business traveller with a meeting soon after landing. A pre-booked car removes the curb wait and the price uncertainty, and a corporate account puts every ride on one monthly invoice.
- Family with children who need car seats. A pre-booked car. The seats are fitted before pickup, and a Business SUV takes six passengers and six bags for US$260 to Uptown.
- Five or more people with luggage. A Business SUV or an Executive Sprinter. An app may send two cars or keep you waiting for a large one.
- Late-night arrival. A pre-booked car, so the ride is waiting when you clear the gate, at the price you agreed.
- Peak periods: big conventions, game days, holidays. A fixed price protects your budget when demand pushes app fares up. See sports event transportation if your trip lines up with a game.

Frequently asked questions
Where do you get an Uber at DFW Airport?
App rides, including Uber and Lyft, pick up on the upper level curbside of each DFW terminal, according to the airport's ground transportation guide. Collect your bags first, then request the ride and head up to the curb. Taxis, by contrast, wait on the lower level.
How much is an Uber from DFW to downtown Dallas?
App fares are not published in advance; the price is set when you request the ride and rises when demand is high. For a fixed comparison, an Elly8.net Business Sedan from DFW to Uptown, beside downtown, is US$200 all-in, and the DART Orange Line costs US$3 for a 3-Hour Pass or US$6 for a Day Pass.
Is it cheaper to take a taxi or Uber from DFW?
It depends on the time and demand. The airport does not publish a set taxi fare, and app prices change with demand, so the same trip can come out either way. For one or two travellers, either is usually cheaper than a pre-booked car; for groups and families, a fixed-price vehicle often compares well.
Can I take the train from DFW to downtown Dallas?
Yes. The DART Orange Line runs from Terminal A Station to downtown Dallas, and Visit Dallas says the trip from either airport to downtown takes under an hour. DART has no luggage racks on light rail, and operators do not help with bags, so it suits light travellers best.
Does a pre-booked car wait if my flight is late?
Yes. Your Elly8.net chauffeur tracks the flight and adjusts to the actual landing time, and complimentary waiting after a tracked landing is included in the fixed price. An app ride or taxi, by contrast, starts only when you request it at the curb.
Can I get a car seat in an Uber from DFW?
Car seats are not guaranteed in a standard app ride. With Elly8.net, child seats are available on request: give the children's ages or seat type when you book, and the seats are fitted before pickup. A Business SUV is the usual choice for a family with seats and luggage.
