Uber is available in Oslo. The company's Oslo guide describes on-demand rides at any time of day, rides you can reserve up to 30 days ahead, UberXL for groups of up to six people and UberXXL when you need guaranteed boot space. For a North American visitor the app feels familiar, and for short trips around the compact city centre it does the job well.
What the app cannot give you is a price agreed in advance that stays fixed whatever the evening brings. Uber's fares move with demand, and Oslo has its predictable peaks: winter weather, Friday nights, concert crowds and the week of the Nobel Peace Prize in December. For the 52 km (33 mi) run from Oslo Airport Gardermoen (OSL) or for a group with luggage, a pre-booked Elly8.net car at a fixed fare from US$265 per vehicle is often the calmer choice.
Is Uber available in Oslo, and what does it cost?
Yes. Uber operates in Oslo with standard rides, UberXL for up to six people and UberXXL for guaranteed luggage space, and you can schedule rides up to 30 days ahead. Uber does not publish fixed Oslo fares: the app shows an estimate per trip, and the price rises when riders outnumber available drivers.
Uber's Oslo city guide tells riders to sign in and enter a destination to see the estimate for each ride option, and notes that sample prices do not reflect geography, traffic delays or promotions and that minimum fees may apply. That is why this guide does not quote an Uber fare from the airport or across town: nobody can, until you open the app on the day. What we can explain is how the price behaves and what the fixed alternatives cost.
The Uber options in Oslo, and what fits in them
The ride types matter more in Oslo than in many cities, because travellers arrive with ski bags, winter coats and long-haul luggage. Uber's own descriptions, set beside the Elly8.net vehicle classes on the fleet:
| Option | Passengers | Luggage | Price basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uber standard ride | Car-sized group | Not specified | App estimate, demand-based |
| UberXL | Up to 6 people | Not specified | App estimate, demand-based |
| UberXXL | Group | Guaranteed boot space, says Uber | App estimate, demand-based |
| Elly8.net Business Sedan | 3 | 2 large bags | US$265 from OSL, fixed per vehicle |
| Elly8.net Business SUV / Van | 6 | 6 large bags | US$345 from OSL, fixed per vehicle |
| Elly8.net Executive Sprinter | 12 | 12 large bags | US$690 from OSL, fixed per vehicle |
Uber also notes that if there is only one account holder in a group, that person can order up to three rides on demand, with each ride starting before the next is requested. For a group of eight that means three cars, three drivers to find at the kerb and three separate prices. One Executive Sprinter carries twelve people and twelve large bags at one fare.
How Uber's surge pricing works
Uber explains its surge pricing plainly: when there are more riders in an area than available drivers, algorithms raise the price automatically, update it frequently and use it to pull more drivers into the busy area. Uber also says that riders who wait a bit longer can often avoid the surge price as supply catches up.
That is a reasonable system for a spontaneous ride home. It is less comfortable when you have a fixed time to meet: a check-in deadline at Gardermoen, a dinner reservation, a ceremony. In Oslo, the moments when demand outruns supply are not hard to guess:
- Snow, sleet and the long winter dark, when people who usually walk, cycle or take the tram want a car.
- Friday and Saturday nights, when restaurants and bars across the centre empty within the same hour.
- Concert and congress nights at Oslo Spektrum, where thousands leave at once.
- Cruise days, when ships at the Port of Oslo send passengers into the city in waves.
- The Nobel Peace Prize week, with the ceremony at Oslo City Hall on 10 December and delegations, diplomats, guests and media arriving in a small capital at the same time.
Using Uber at Oslo Airport Gardermoen
Gardermoen is about 52 km (33 mi) from the city centre, a drive of about 47 minutes on a clear road along the E6. Avinor, the airport operator, focuses its ground-transport guidance on the taxi stand right outside the international arrivals hall and on the taxi booking machine at ground level, which shows prices to most addresses in Eastern Norway. Avinor says a taxi must be booked before departure, on the machines or through the taxi companies' own apps, and it advises against agreeing a ride directly with a driver inside or outside the terminal.
An app ride works as it does anywhere: request after landing, wait for a driver to accept, and walk to the pickup point the app shows. After a transatlantic flight, passport control and the baggage belt, that is one more task. A pre-booked Elly8.net chauffeur tracks the flight from the number you give us and waits in the international arrivals hall with a name board; waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary.
And the train deserves its place. Flytoget runs every 10 minutes, takes 19 minutes to the centre and costs NOK 276 for an adult to Oslo S or Nationaltheatret. For one or two people with a hotel near either station, it beats every car on time and cost.
Scheduled Uber or a pre-booked chauffeur?
Uber's reserve feature lets you request a ride up to 30 days ahead, which looks similar to booking a chauffeur. The differences show up on the day:
- Price. A scheduled ride gives you an estimate in the app; an Elly8.net fare is fixed and paid in US$ when you book, all-in, including standard gratuity.
- Meeting point. App pickups happen at the kerb or a designated pickup area; the chauffeur meets you inside arrivals with a name board.
- Flight tracking and waiting. The chauffeur adjusts to the actual landing and waits through a slow passport queue at no extra cost.
- Vehicle and luggage. You choose a class defined by seats and bags, and add child seats or skis in advance.
- Changes. If a connection is missed, the 24/7 desk moves the pickup when you message the new flight.
- Invoicing. A corporate account gives one booking contact for many travellers and monthly invoicing.

When Uber is the right call in Oslo
Fairness first. The app is a good choice for:
- Short trips in the centre, for example from Aker Brygge to the Opera House on a mild evening.
- Spontaneous plans when you do not know when you will leave.
- Solo travellers with light luggage outside the peaks above.
- A quick hop to Holmenkollen on an ordinary afternoon, about 9.5 km (6 mi) and 20 minutes above the city.
Oslo's trams, metro and buses are good too, and the waterfront from Bjørvika to Tjuvholmen is pleasant on foot.
A worked example: four travellers landing at Gardermoen
Take a family of four arriving from North America on a winter evening, with four suitcases and a hotel on the Frogner side of the city. The options, as arithmetic for comparison only:
- Flytoget: four adult tickets at NOK 276 is NOK 1,104 to Nationaltheatret or Oslo S, then a taxi or a walk with the bags to the hotel.
- An app ride: a standard car may not take four people and four large cases, so it means UberXL or UberXXL at whatever the app shows that evening, possibly two cars.
- Elly8.net: one Business SUV or Van, six seats and room for six large bags, at US$345 for the vehicle, with the chauffeur waiting in arrivals.
On a summer afternoon with carry-on bags, the train is the sensible choice. On a dark, snowy evening with children and luggage, many families decide the fixed car is worth the difference.
Tips if you do use the app in Oslo
- Pick the ride type for your bags, not just your headcount; UberXXL is the option Uber describes as guaranteeing boot space.
- Check the estimate before you confirm, and if a surge is showing, consider waiting a few minutes or taking the train.
- Agree the pickup point in the app before you leave the terminal, and keep your phone charged and roaming.
When a fixed fare per vehicle wins
- Arrivals and departures at Gardermoen, especially early, late, in winter or with children.
- Groups and families with luggage, where one SUV or Sprinter replaces two or three app cars.
- Nobel week and big event nights. The evening out and event night package costs from US$475 in a business sedan to US$950 in an Executive Sprinter, with the car waiting. See event transportation.
- Business days with several meetings. The hourly service, from US$95 an hour in a business sedan to US$190 in a Sprinter with a 3-hour minimum, keeps one car with you; the corporate roadshow day costs from US$855 to US$1,710. See hourly chauffeur and corporate car service.
- Days out of the city, where a car that waits is easier than re-requesting at a fjord town or a museum. Our guide to Oslo day tours with a private driver has the routes.
Tolls and electric cars
Oslo's road tolls apply to every vehicle passing a toll station, app ride or chauffeur alike. Fjellinjen charges by fuel type and time of day, with electric cars paying the lowest rate. On an Elly8.net booking, tolls and parking are billed at cost on top of the fixed fare. Norway's car market is now overwhelmingly electric, so your partner vehicle may well be electric, which keeps the toll line small and the ride quiet. If you need a specific vehicle type for luggage, say so when you book.

Frequently asked questions
Does Uber work in Oslo?
Yes. Uber's Oslo guide lists on-demand rides, scheduled rides up to 30 days ahead, UberXL for groups of up to six and UberXXL for guaranteed boot space. Prices are shown in the app per trip and change with demand.
How much is an Uber from Oslo Airport to the city?
Uber does not publish a fixed fare; the app shows an estimate when you request, and it rises in busy periods. For comparison, Flytoget costs NOK 276 per adult to Oslo S, and an Elly8.net car costs from US$265 per vehicle, fixed and all-in.
When does Uber surge in Oslo?
Surge happens automatically when riders outnumber drivers. In Oslo that tends to mean snowy or wet weather, weekend nights, events at Oslo Spektrum, cruise days and the Nobel Peace Prize week around 10 December. Waiting a little can bring the price down; a pre-booked fare does not change.
Can six people with luggage share one Uber in Oslo?
UberXL takes up to six people and UberXXL promises guaranteed boot space. An Elly8.net Business SUV or Van takes six passengers and six large bags at one fixed fare from Gardermoen of US$345, and an Executive Sprinter takes twelve and twelve for US$690.
Is a scheduled Uber the same as a chauffeur?
Not quite. A scheduled ride reserves a request; the price is an app estimate and pickup is at the kerb. A pre-booked chauffeur has a fixed, all-in price, tracks your flight, waits inside arrivals with a name board and offers complimentary waiting after a tracked landing.
Can you provide cars during Nobel Peace Prize week?
Yes. Book hourly cars, airport transfers and evening service for the days around 10 December as early as you can. We provide the car and chauffeur only; invitations and access to the ceremony and official events are arranged by the organisers.
