Uber operates in Prague, and for a short ride across the centre at a quiet hour it is a practical choice: the app shows the price before you confirm, and you pay through the app. Since 1 July 2020, Czech rules have allowed cars without a taximeter to work as taxis on an electronic order, which is the legal basis for app rides, and the app must tell you the price in advance and send a confirmation afterwards, according to Prague City Tourism.
What the app cannot promise is the price at the busiest moments, a car that can reach a hotel in the Old Town lanes, or room for a family's luggage. Rides booked through Elly8.net are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. This guide explains how Uber, metered taxis, public transport and a pre-booked chauffeur compare in Prague, and when each one is the right call.
Is Uber a good way to get around Prague?
For one or two people making short trips at normal hours, yes: the price is shown before you book and payment is in the app. It is less suited to busy nights, groups with luggage, hotels deep in the Old Town lanes, airport runs on a fixed budget and day trips, where a pre-booked car works better.
Prague is also one of Europe's easiest cities to explore on foot and by tram. Many visitors staying in the historic centre need very few car rides at all, and the ones they do need cluster around arrival, departure and one or two evenings.
How app rides and taxis work in Prague
Prague has three ways to hire a car with a driver on the spot, and they follow different rules.
Metered taxis. Ordinary taxis run on a taximeter, and the City of Prague sets the maximum rates. According to Prague City Tourism, the initial charge is at most CZK 60, each kilometre at most CZK 36 and each minute of waiting at most CZK 7; for electric cars the caps are CZK 70 to start and CZK 39 per kilometre. The same source recommends booking rather than hailing, because a taxi hailed on the street usually costs much more, and advises watching the meter and asking for a receipt.
Agreed in writing. A passenger and a driver can also agree the conditions of the ride in writing in advance.
App rides on an electronic order. This is where Uber and similar apps sit. The car does not need a taximeter, but you must be told the price before the ride and receive a confirmation as soon as it ends.
At the airport, the arrangement is different again. Prague Airport's official taxi service is the Uber Airport product, ordered in the app, at kiosks or at staffed counters, with a six-digit PIN. We cover it in detail in our guide to Uber from Prague Airport.
Surge pricing: what to expect
Uber does not publish fixed fares for Prague routes, so we will not quote one. What matters for planning is how app pricing behaves: the price is calculated when you request the ride, it is shown before you accept, and it can rise when many people want a car at once and fewer cars are nearby.
In Prague, those moments are predictable:
- Concert and match nights at the O2 arena, Prague's big indoor venue for concerts and sport, when a whole audience opens the app at once.
- The Christmas market season on Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, from 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, daily from 10:00 to 22:00 according to the market organiser, when the squares and surrounding lanes fill every evening.
- New Year's Eve and the early hours of 1 January, when demand across the city peaks.
- Late Friday and Saturday nights around the Old Town and the New Town.
The law protects you from a surprise at the end of the ride, because the price is fixed when you accept. It does not protect you from a high price at the start, or from a long wait for a car.
The Old Town problem: where a car can stop
Prague's historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and its street plan was not built for cars. Many Old Town lanes are narrow or one-way, the Lesser Town climbs on cobbles below the Castle, and cars stopped crossing Charles Bridge in 1965, as Prague City Tourism notes.
That has practical consequences for any car:
The pin is not the door. An app sends the driver to the nearest point it can route to, which may be a street or two from your hotel. With luggage, that short walk over cobbles is the part of the trip people remember.
Pickups on busy squares. On market evenings, finding a driver on a crowded square is slow. Agree a pickup point on a street the car can reach, such as the edge of the Old Town, and walk to it.
Prague Castle. The Castle asks visitors not to bring large baggage into the Castle area, according to Prague Castle. On a travel day, a car that waits with the suitcases, rather than an app ride that drops and leaves, lets you see the Castle and continue to the airport.
When you book with Elly8.net, give us the hotel name and the desk confirms the nearest drop-off point in advance. The chauffeur helps with the bags for the final stretch.
Uber, taxi, public transport or a pre-booked car
| Option | How the price works | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public transport (PID) | 30-minute ticket CZK 39 (CZK 36 in the app); 24-hour CZK 150 (CZK 140 in the app) | Sightseeing days, light travellers | Each person needs a ticket |
| Uber or another app | Shown before you accept; set by the app | Short rides, one or two people | Higher prices and waits at busy times |
| Metered taxi, booked | Meter, within the city's maximum rates | Phone or dispatcher bookings | Hailing on the street usually costs more |
| Elly8.net, pre-booked | Fixed per vehicle in US$, from US$95 airport to Old Town | Airport runs, groups, evenings, day trips | Book ahead; not for a two-minute hop |
Public transport fares are from Prague Integrated Transport, which also notes that children under 6 travel free, children from 6 to 10 travel free without a document, and passengers aged 65 and over travel free in Prague with an ID showing their date of birth. Those concessions make the tram the obvious choice for many families and older travellers on sightseeing days.
When Uber is the right choice
We would happily use an app ride in Prague in these cases:
- A short hop from the Old Town to a restaurant in Vinohrady or Karlín at 8 pm on a weekday.
- One or two people with no luggage, when the tram is not convenient.
- A last-minute change of plan, when there is no time to book anything.
For these trips, a pre-booked chauffeur is more than you need. Our general guide to a chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft explains the same split in other cities.
When a pre-booked car wins
Arrival and departure days. The airport is the trip where luggage, fatigue and timing all matter. A fixed transfer from Václav Havel Airport Prague to the Old Town costs from US$95 in a business sedan, US$125 in a business SUV and US$250 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle, with the chauffeur waiting inside arrivals. Our Prague Airport to city center by car guide covers drive times by district.
An evening with a fixed end time. For a concert at the O2 arena or dinner during the Christmas markets, the evening out and event night package costs from US$425 in a business sedan to US$850 in an Executive Sprinter. The car waits at an agreed point, so nobody stands in the cold refreshing an app at 11 pm. See concert transportation.
Groups. A Business SUV or First Class SUV seats six with six bags, and an Executive Sprinter seats twelve with twelve. For a wedding party, an incentive group or two families, one vehicle at a fixed price is simpler than four separate app rides arriving at different times. See group transportation.
A day out of the city. App rides are built for one-way trips inside a city. For Kutná Hora, Karlštejn or Terezín, a chauffeur who waits all day is the right product; our Prague day trip guide sets out the routes and timings.
Moving on to another city. For Český Krumlov, Vienna or Berlin, a door-to-door transfer keeps your luggage in one vehicle the whole way; see Prague to Český Krumlov by car, bus or train.
Business travel. Companies booking teams into Prague can open a corporate account with monthly invoicing and the same fixed fares for every traveller.
Prague by the hour: the alternative to several app rides
A day of meetings or sightseeing with several stops is where hourly booking beats a string of app requests. Prague car service by the hour costs:
| Vehicle | Seats / bags | Per hour (3-hour minimum) |
|---|---|---|
| Business Sedan | 3 / 2 | US$85 |
| Business SUV | 6 / 6 | US$110 |
| First Class SUV | 6 / 6 | US$130 |
| First Class Sedan | 3 / 2 | US$140 |
| Executive Sprinter | 12 / 12 | US$170 |
Three hours in a business sedan comes to US$255, per vehicle: enough for a Castle visit with the bags in the car, a lunch in the Lesser Town and the drive to the airport. See hourly chauffeur service and the private city tours page for the highlights tour, from US$340 in a business sedan.
Tips for North American visitors using Uber in Prague
- Check the pickup pin before you confirm, and move it to a street a car can reach if you are inside the Old Town.
- Look at the price and the wait time together. At busy times, a short walk to a quieter street can bring both down.
- Pay attention to the currency. Czech prices are in koruna. When a card terminal offers to charge you in another currency, the official Český Krumlov tourist office, for one, advises choosing koruna, because the terminal's own conversion is usually less favourable.
- For a booked metered taxi, watch that the meter is running and ask for a receipt, as Prague City Tourism recommends.
- Plan the busy nights in advance. If you already have O2 arena tickets or a New Year's Eve dinner booked, book the car at the same time.

Frequently asked questions
Is Uber legal in Prague?
Yes. Since 1 July 2020, Czech rules have allowed cars without a taximeter to provide taxi services on an electronic order, which is how app rides work. The app must tell you the price before the ride and send a confirmation once it ends, according to Prague City Tourism.
Does Uber have surge pricing in Prague?
App prices are set when you request the ride and can be higher when demand is high, such as after O2 arena events, on Christmas market evenings or on New Year's Eve. The price is shown before you accept, so you can decide, but the app does not publish fixed route fares.
What are the maximum taxi fares in Prague?
The City of Prague caps metered taxi fares at CZK 60 for the initial charge, CZK 36 per kilometre and CZK 7 per minute of waiting, with slightly higher caps for electric cars. Prague City Tourism recommends booking a taxi rather than hailing one on the street.
Can an Uber drive into the Old Town?
Sometimes, but many lanes are narrow or one-way and the pickup point may be a street or two from your door. With luggage, choose a pickup on a street a car can reach. A pre-booked Elly8.net chauffeur confirms the nearest drop-off point for your hotel in advance.
Should I use Uber from Prague Airport?
You can: Uber Airport is the airport's official taxi service, booked in the app, at kiosks or at staffed counters, with pickup points in front of both arrival halls and a six-digit PIN. For a family or group with bags, a chauffeur waiting inside arrivals with a name board at a fixed price is the simpler option.
Is a pre-booked car more expensive than Uber in Prague?
For a short ride across the centre, usually yes. For the airport with a family and luggage, a group in one vehicle, or an evening with the car waiting, a fixed price from US$95 to the Old Town or US$85 an hour can compare well, and it does not change on a busy night.
