Prague to Český Krumlov is about 175 km (109 mi) by road on our routing, roughly 2 hours 10 minutes on a clear road from the Old Town; the town's own tourist office gives 180 km and about two and a half hours. By public transport, the official visitor site lists a bus of about 3 hours, direct or with a change in České Budějovice, and a train journey of about 4 to 5 hours with a change in České Budějovice.
For North American travellers, the question is less about the clock than about the luggage and the last kilometre. Český Krumlov's historic centre is a pedestrian zone, and since June 2025 visitors and hotel guests may not drive into it at all. Rides from Prague are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. This guide compares every option fairly and explains how to plan the arrival.
What is the best way to get from Prague to Český Krumlov?
For one or two light travellers, the bus is good value at about 3 hours, ending a 10 to 15-minute walk from the main square. A private car takes about 2 hours 10 minutes, with luggage handled, stops on the way and the option to continue to Vienna. The train, 4 to 5 hours with a change, is slowest.
All three end outside the historic centre, because cars cannot enter it. The difference is how far you then walk, and with how much luggage.
The three options side by side
| Option | Door-to-centre time | Changes | Where it ends | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private car | about 2 h 10 min on a clear road (routed) | none | Nearest permitted drop-off, 8 to 15 min walk to the square | Families, groups, heavy bags, onward to Austria |
| Bus | about 3 hours | direct or one change in České Budějovice | Bus station, about 650 m from Svornosti Square | Solo travellers and couples, light bags |
| Train | about 4 to 5 hours | change in České Budějovice | Station 1.7 km north of the centre | Rail fans with time to spare |
Journey times for the bus and train are from the official Český Krumlov visitor site; the drive time is our routed estimate. Check the operators' timetables and fares for your date.
The bus: good value for light travellers
The direct buses are the public transport choice most visitors make, and for good reason. They take about 3 hours from Prague, and Český Krumlov has two stops: the bus station, about a 10 to 13-minute walk (650 m) from Svornosti Square, and Špičák, about 15 minutes (800 m) away. Some journeys involve a change in České Budějovice, 22 km from the town.
Where it works: one or two people, a backpack or a carry-on each, a hotel close to the bus station side of town.
Where it is hard work: two large transatlantic cases each, children, a stroller, or a hotel on the far side of the river. The walk from the bus stop is on old streets with cobbles, steps and a real change in level, which the town's own FAQ warns about.
The train: scenic but slow
By rail, the visitor site gives about 4 to 5 hours from Prague, with a change in České Budějovice and about 45 minutes on the final leg. The Český Krumlov railway station is 1.7 km north of the centre, roughly a 30 to 35-minute walk from the square. The town suggests the local bus or a taxi from the station because of the distance and the climb.
The train makes sense if you already hold a rail pass and enjoy the journey for its own sake. For most visitors with luggage, it is the least convenient option.
The private car: door to the edge of the old town
On our routing, the drive from Prague's Old Town to Český Krumlov is about 175 km (109 mi) and about 2 hours 10 minutes on a clear road, south through Central and South Bohemia. These are estimates, not promises; Friday afternoons out of Prague and summer weekends add time.
What the car does well:
- Luggage stays in the vehicle from your Prague hotel door to Český Krumlov.
- No changes. One vehicle, one driver, no platforms or bus bays.
- Stops on your terms. A coffee stop, or lunch in České Budějovice, 22 km before Český Krumlov, fits easily.
- Onward travel. The same car can continue to Austria the next day, or the same day after a visit.
A one-way Prague to Český Krumlov transfer is not on the published price list, so it is quoted in the web booker as a fixed price per vehicle before you pay. A round-trip day with waiting time is booked as a full-day chauffeur, from US$630 in a business sedan to US$1,255 in an Executive Sprinter. See city to city car service for how long transfers work.
The rule that changes everything: the pedestrian zone
This is the part most guides miss. The historic centre of Český Krumlov is a pedestrian zone with a special entry regime, and the town revised it from 9 June 2025. According to the town's visitor information on the pedestrian zone:
- Entry is by special permit from the Municipal Office, within a limited time frame.
- Visitors to the town, and guests staying at accommodation inside the pedestrian zone, are not permitted to drive in.
- Car parks P1 to P5 and P7 are close to the centre, about 480 to 670 metres from Svornosti Square for the nearest ones, an 8 to 15-minute walk.
- For transport of yourself or your luggage to accommodation inside the zone, the town recommends contacting your host or a local taxi service.
What that means for a chauffeured transfer: the chauffeur drives you to the nearest point a car may stop, not to the hotel door, and helps unload. Before you travel, ask your hotel how it handles guests' luggage from the car parks. Tell us the hotel name when you book, and the desk plans the drop-off point to match.
The same applies on the way out: arrange the luggage with the hotel, and meet the car at the agreed point.
If you are thinking of driving yourself
Some visitors rent a car for South Bohemia. If you do, the town's visitor FAQ is useful: more than 800 parking spaces sit near the historic centre in car parks P1 to P5 and P7, about 480 to 880 metres from Svornosti Square; they are open all year and accept koruna, euros and cards, but spaces cannot be reserved or bought online in advance. Hotel guests can buy discounted one- to seven-day parking cards valid in P1, P2, P3 and P5, which allow repeated entry and exit but do not guarantee a space.
Against that, weigh the motorway vignette, the drive back after dinner and a busy car park on a summer afternoon. With a chauffeur, the parking question disappears: you are dropped at the nearest permitted point and the car leaves.
Is Český Krumlov a day trip from Prague?
It can be, but it is a long one. With about 2 hours 10 minutes each way on a clear road, a return day spends over four hours in the car. The town's own advice is that one day is enough to see the historic centre, the castle, the castle tower and the gardens with a short walk, and that two days allow a more relaxed visit with museums and viewpoints.
Our recommendation for American and Canadian travellers:
- Stay at least one night. You see the town early in the morning and in the evening, outside the busiest day-visit hours, and the drive is no longer squeezed into one day.
- Or make it the middle of a journey. Prague to Český Krumlov, then on to Vienna or Salzburg, turns the drive into two half days with a famous town in between.
If you only have a day, our Prague day trip guide covers closer options such as Kutná Hora, about 82 km away and the subject of our 6-hour signature package.
Onward from Český Krumlov: Vienna, Salzburg and Linz
Český Krumlov sits close to the Austrian border, which makes it a natural stop between Prague and Austria. Routed estimates from the town:
| From Český Krumlov to | Routed distance | Clear-road drive | Visitor-site estimate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vienna | about 207 km / 129 mi | about 3 h | 210 km, about 3 h |
| Salzburg | about 206 km / 128 mi | about 2 h 40 min | 220 km, about 3 h |
| Linz | - | - | 70 km, about 1 h |
| České Budějovice | - | - | 22 km, about 20 min |
Shuttle buses also connect the town with Linz, Vienna, Hallstatt and Salzburg, according to the visitor site; they suit light travellers. For a family or group continuing to Vienna, a private transfer keeps everyone and every bag in one vehicle. On arrival in Vienna, our Vienna car service page has the airport fares, and the Vienna day trips guide covers the Wachau, which some guests visit on the way.
What it costs, and how to choose the vehicle
All Elly8.net prices are fixed per vehicle and include the chauffeur, vehicle, taxes and standard gratuity, with tolls and parking billed at cost. The one-way transfer is quoted in the web booker; the published Prague fares are a guide to the classes.
| Vehicle | Seats / bags | Prague Airport to Old Town | Full-day chauffeur |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business Sedan | 3 / 2 | US$95 | US$630 |
| Business SUV | 6 / 6 | US$125 | US$810 |
| First Class SUV | 6 / 6 | US$155 | US$960 |
| First Class Sedan | 3 / 2 | US$170 | US$1,035 |
| Executive Sprinter | 12 / 12 | US$250 | US$1,255 |
For a couple with a large case each, a Business Sedan works. For a family of four with four large cases, choose a Business SUV, because a sedan carries two bags. For two families or a small group, the Executive Sprinter carries twelve people and twelve bags.
The group arithmetic. Bus and rail fares are per person, so a group of six pays six fares and still has to manage the luggage at each change. The car is one fixed price for the vehicle; divide it by the number of travellers to compare, for comparison only.
