In London, the right ride changes with the trip. A black cab is the best tool for a spontaneous journey across the centre, because you can hail one and the meter is regulated. An app ride is often cheaper at quiet times if you are happy to wait for a booked car. The Tube and the Elizabeth line beat everything on the road when you travel light. A pre-booked car with a fixed price wins when timing, luggage, a group or an event crowd are involved.
That is the short version. The useful version applies it to the journeys you will actually make, so this guide walks through a London week, ride by ride, and gives a verdict for each one. Where a taxi or the train is the better call, it says so.
Taxi, Uber or private car: which is best in London?
Use a black cab for hailed, short trips in central London; an app ride for booked trips at quiet times; the Tube or Elizabeth line when you travel light; and a pre-booked car for airports with luggage, groups, event nights, meeting days and any trip where the time and the price must not move.
Three facts shape every verdict below. Black cab fares are set by Transport for London and rise in the evening, at weekends and overnight. App rides are private hire: in London they must be booked in advance through a licensed operator and their prices move with demand. A chauffeur car through Elly8.net is also private hire, but booked ahead at a fixed, all-in price per vehicle, charged in US$. Our guide to London black cab and rideshare fares has TfL's full tariff tables.
A London week, ride by ride
1. Monday 7 a.m.: landing at Heathrow alone, one case, hotel near Paddington
Verdict: the Heathrow Express or the Elizabeth line. The Heathrow Express reaches Paddington in 15 minutes for £26, or from £10 booked 30 days ahead. The Elizabeth line takes about 28 minutes for £14.60 pay as you go. A car cannot match either on value for one traveller. Our guide to whether the Heathrow Express is worth it runs the numbers.
2. Monday 7 a.m.: the same flight, but a family of four with five cases, staying in Chelsea
Verdict: a pre-booked car. Four people and five cases need a Business SUV, which seats six with six bags, at a fixed US$255 from Heathrow. A black cab from the rank is TfL's estimate of £70 to £120 on the meter, plus £1.60, and app rides collect from the Terminal Parking car park rather than arrivals. The chauffeur waits inside arrivals with a name board, tracks the flight, and fits child seats on request.
3. Monday afternoon: hotel in Mayfair to lunch in Marylebone
Verdict: a black cab, an app ride or your feet. A short daytime hop is exactly what taxis and app rides do well. On TfL's figures, a two-mile black cab ride on weekday daytime rates is typically £12.60 to £20.20. Booking a chauffeur would cost more and save nothing.
4. Tuesday: four investor meetings in the City, then Canary Wharf
Verdict: a private car for the day. Four meetings means four or more separate rides, each with a fresh wait and a fresh price, and nowhere to leave a bag. The corporate roadshow day, ten hours with one chauffeur, costs from US$945 in a business sedan, and the car waits near each lobby. See roadshow chauffeur.
5. Tuesday evening: dinner near the office, back to the hotel at 10:30 p.m.
Verdict: a black cab or an app ride. Late but ordinary. Black cabs switch to the night tariff from 22:00, so take whichever turns up first: a hailed cab or an app ride. Either beats keeping a car waiting for one short ride.
6. Wednesday: London City Airport for a morning short-haul flight
Verdict: a pre-booked car if you are coming from the West End with luggage; a cab from the City. A fixed Elly8.net fare from Mayfair to London City Airport starts at US$155 in a business sedan. From an office near Bank, a short black cab ride is simpler. TfL allows cabs to add up to £6 for dropping at the City Airport forecourt, or you can ask to be dropped where it is safe and legal for free. Wherever you land next, the same desk books the car at the other end, from our Edinburgh chauffeur service to Dublin airport transfers.
7. Wednesday night: a West End show for six
Verdict: a pre-booked car or two cabs. Getting there is easy; the problem is 10:30 p.m., when every theatre on the street empties at once, cabs with their lights on vanish and app prices climb. The evening out and event night package covers five hours with the car waiting, from US$675 in a business SUV for six. For two people staying nearby, walk or hail a cab a few streets away from the crowd.
8. Thursday: a stadium concert at Wembley
Verdict: the Tube there; plan the ride home. Wembley Stadium says public transport is the best way to reach the stadium, with Wembley Park on the Jubilee and Metropolitan lines, two stops from Baker Street on the Metropolitan. On event days there is a taxi rank on Engineers Way next to the arena, and the queue after a show is long. If you want to leave without the crowd, a car booked to an agreed pickup point a walk from the stadium, as part of the evening package, is the reliable option. See concert transportation.
9. Friday: a day trip to Windsor and the Cotswolds
Verdict: a private car. Windsor alone is an easy trip from London, but the Cotswold villages are spread across country lanes, and linking the two in one day by public transport is slow. The signature Windsor Castle and the Cotswolds day trip is a 10-hour day, from US$970 in a business sedan to US$1,935 in an Executive Sprinter. For Oxford or Bath instead, see our London to Oxford and London to Bath guides.
10. Saturday: shopping in Knightsbridge, then the Royal Albert Hall in the evening
Verdict: black cabs by day, a booked pickup at night. Daytime hops between Knightsbridge and Kensington are short cab rides, and a cab is easy to hail. When the Royal Albert Hall empties, thousands of people want a ride from the same stretch of Kensington Gore. A car booked for the end of the concert, waiting at an agreed point nearby, takes the uncertainty out of the last ride of the night.
11. Sunday: Eurostar from St Pancras to Paris, two large cases each
Verdict: a pre-booked car for a family; a cab for a solo traveller. A single traveller with one case can take a black cab from the hotel rank. A family with four large cases needs a vehicle big enough for all of it, timed to the check-in window. Book a train station transfer in London and our Paris chauffeur service meets you off the train in Paris.
12. Monday: back to Gatwick for the flight home
Verdict: a pre-booked car. Gatwick is outside Greater London, so TfL says a black cab fare there can be negotiated before you set off; if nothing is agreed, the meter applies. A fixed Elly8.net fare from Mayfair to Gatwick starts at US$340 in a business sedan and US$445 in a business SUV, the same price in either direction, with airport charges billed at cost. Gatwick charges a minimum of £10 to use its terminal drop-off zones, which any car or cab passes on, and on our bookings it is billed at cost. The Gatwick Express from Victoria, non-stop in about half an hour, is the solo alternative. Connecting to a Heathrow flight instead? Our Gatwick to Heathrow guide compares the coach, the trains and a car.
When to skip the road altogether
Some London trips are better without any car. The Elizabeth line runs under the West End to Bond Street and Tottenham Court Road and east to Liverpool Street and Canary Wharf, so a hotel near one of its stations is often quicker to reach by train than by road at rush hour. On Friday and Saturday nights, TfL runs the Night Tube on the Central, Jubilee, Northern, Piccadilly, Victoria and Windrush lines, which helps after a late dinner or a show if you are travelling light.
The road wins back when there are bags, children, a group, a fixed time to keep or an address far from a station. The test is simple: if you would have to carry a suitcase up stairs, change lines twice or walk the last mile in the rain, the fare difference starts to look small. If you are one person with a small bag and a station at each end, take the train and keep the car for the trips above where it earns its price.

Weekends, holidays and road charges
The same trip can price differently on a Saturday. Black cabs run Tariff 2 from 05:00 to 22:00 at weekends, the rate that applies on weekday evenings, and Tariff 3 on public holidays, according to TfL. App prices follow demand, which on a sunny Saturday in the West End can be high.
Road charges also follow the calendar. TfL's Congestion Charge is £18 a day and applies from 07:00 to 18:00 on weekdays and from 12:00 to 18:00 at weekends and on bank holidays, with no charge between Christmas Day and the New Year's Day bank holiday. Licensed black cabs are exempt; private hire vehicles, including app rides and chauffeur cars, are not. On Elly8.net bookings the charge is billed at cost when it applies, never as a surcharge, so a Sunday-morning airport run inside the zone carries none.
Three rules of thumb
Count bags, not just people. A Business Sedan seats 3 with room for 2 bags; a Business SUV seats 6 with 6 bags; an Executive Sprinter seats 12 with 12 bags. A black cab's licensed passenger number is printed on its plate, and luggage space varies. If you have more cases than travellers, book the vehicle that carries them.
Watch the clock. Black cab rates rise at 20:00 on weekdays and at 22:00 every night, and app prices rise when demand peaks. A pre-booked fare does not change with the hour.
Think about the last ride first. Getting to a show, a game or a gala is rarely the problem. Getting home from it is.

Frequently asked questions
Is a London taxi or Uber cheaper?
For short trips at quiet times, an app ride is often cheaper than a black cab, and the two are close for ordinary daytime hops. Black cab fares are regulated by TfL and rise in the evening and overnight; app prices move with demand. For airports with luggage, a fixed car can be more predictable than either.
When is a private car the better booking in London?
When the trip involves an airport and luggage, a group, a meeting schedule, a day trip outside London, or the end of a big event. A pre-booked car has a fixed price per vehicle, a chauffeur who waits, and no change in price with the time or the demand.
Can you hail a taxi anywhere in London?
You can hail a licensed black cab when its yellow "for hire" light is on, or take one from a rank at a station, hotel or airport. App rides and minicabs cannot be hailed; in London every private hire trip must be booked in advance through a licensed operator.
What is the cheapest way from Heathrow to central London?
The Piccadilly line, at £5.90 pay as you go to Piccadilly Circus on TfL's fare finder, is the cheapest. The Elizabeth line, at £14.60 to Paddington, is faster and continues across central London. For a group or a family with luggage, a fixed car from US$195 per vehicle can work out simpler.
Is it worth taking a car to a West End show?
For two people staying nearby, no: walk or take a cab. For a group, or a hotel across town, the evening out and event night package, from US$525 in a business sedan, means the car is waiting when the theatre empties and every cab nearby is taken.
How far ahead should a London car be booked?
As soon as your flight or event is confirmed, especially for summer events and weekday mornings. Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less and 100% at 24 hours or less or a no-show.
