In Providence, a taxi or an app ride is often the right call for a short, spontaneous hop across downtown, RIPTA buses and the weekday commuter rail are the cheapest way to and from the airport for one person with light luggage, and a pre-booked private car wins when the timing, the group or the bags matter. Elly8.net cars start at US$125 from T. F. Green Airport (PVD) to downtown in a business sedan, fixed and all-in per vehicle.
What follows is a trip-by-trip guide rather than a sales pitch. For each of the journeys people actually make in and around Providence, it sets out what each option costs where a price is published, how pickups work, and which one we would honestly pick. Rides booked with Elly8.net in Providence are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk.
Should you take a taxi, Uber or a private car in Providence?
Take a taxi or an app ride for short, unplanned trips when you travel light. Take RIPTA (US$2) or the weekday commuter rail for budget airport runs. Book a private car for late flights, families with child seats, groups, client pickups, event nights and day trips, when a fixed, all-in price from US$125 is worth having.
The reason there is no single answer is that the options price differently. A taxi runs on a meter, an app ride is priced by the app at the moment you request it, a bus or train has a published fare per person, and a pre-booked car has one fixed price for the whole vehicle. Which is cheapest depends on how many of you there are, what time it is and how much you are carrying.

Sources: RIPTA fares; MBTA Providence station is in Zone 8 and the MBTA fare zone table lists a Zone 8 one-way at US$12.25. Taxi and app fares are not published as fixed prices, so we do not invent them.
Trip 1: landing at T. F. Green (PVD)
PVD is unusually well connected for an airport its size. According to the airport's public transit page, RIPTA buses 1, 20 and 66 stop at the far end of the commercial roadway in front of the terminal, route 14 stops at the InterLink, and weekday MBTA commuter trains run from the InterLink to downtown Providence and on to Boston. Taxis wait at the Primary Taxi Pick-Up outside Lower Level baggage claim, and Uber and Lyft pick up on the outer arrivals roadway directly outside it.
Our verdict. One traveller, weekday daytime, carry-on only: take the train or the bus. Two people at an off-peak hour with one bag each: a taxi or an app ride is fine. A family with car seats, a late Sunday arrival when there is no airport train, a client you are collecting, or four people with skis: book the car. Our walkthrough of what to expect from a Providence airport car service covers the meeting point and the bag counts.
Trip 2: arriving by train at Providence Station
Providence Station, near the State House, serves Amtrak and the MBTA commuter rail. It is a short distance from downtown hotels, and many visitors simply walk or take a taxi from the stand.
Our verdict. With a roller bag and a hotel downtown, walk or take a cab. If you are heading up College Hill with luggage, out to the East Side, or straight on to Newport or a wedding venue, a pre-booked car is easier, especially on a Friday evening when every train unloads at once. The chauffeur meets you at the station; see train station transfers.
Trip 3: dinner on Federal Hill or a night downtown
Atwells Avenue on Federal Hill is the classic dinner street, and downtown has the Providence Performing Arts Center and the bars around the river. Parking on a Saturday night is the main reason people stop driving themselves.
Our verdict. Two people out for dinner: an app ride each way is usually the cheapest. Six friends doing dinner and a show: a single business SUV on the evening out and event night package, from US$600 all-in for the vehicle, keeps everyone together and removes the end-of-night wait for two app cars. The chauffeur follows Rhode Island rules on alcohol in vehicles, so the toasts happen at the table. For bigger groups, our Providence party bus guide compares a Sprinter with a party bus.
Trip 4: WaterFire, games and concerts
On a WaterFire lighting night, the streets around the river basin fill up, and the end of a Providence Bruins game or a concert at the Amica Mutual Pavilion sends thousands of people onto the same few blocks at once.
Our verdict. This is where app pricing is least predictable, because demand spikes at the exact moment everyone leaves. If you are flexible, walk a few blocks away from the crowd before you request a ride. If you have a fixed plan, especially with children or older relatives, book the evening package or an hourly car and agree a pickup point with the chauffeur a short walk from the venue. See concert transportation and sports event transportation.
Trip 5: College Hill move-in, Commencement and family weekends
The busiest car days in Providence are the student calendar: move-in in late summer, family weekends in the autumn and Commencement in late spring at Brown and RISD.
Our verdict. For move-in with boxes, an app car is a gamble on vehicle size, and a standard taxi or sedan fills up fast with boxes. A business SUV takes up to 6 passengers and 6 bags, and the Executive Sprinter takes 12 and 12. For Commencement weekend, book well ahead and consider an hourly booking, from US$95 an hour in a business sedan or US$120 in a business SUV, with a 3-hour minimum, so the car covers the ceremony, lunch and the drive back.
Trip 6: Newport for the day
Newport is about 34 miles (55 km) south of downtown by road, around 50 minutes on a clear road across the bridges. You can take a bus or drive yourself, but a day of mansions, Ocean Drive and the harbour involves a lot of stopping and starting.
Our verdict. A one-way app ride to Newport is possible, but finding a ride back from Bellevue Avenue at 5 pm on a summer Saturday is not something to rely on. The Elly8.net 5-hour Newport day trip from Providence starts at US$440 in a business sedan and US$555 in a business SUV, with the chauffeur waiting at each stop and bridge tolls billed at cost. For four people that is about US$139 each in the SUV, as simple arithmetic for comparison; the price is for the vehicle. The Preservation Society of Newport County lists mansion opening times.
Trip 7: Boston for a meeting or a flight
Our verdict. One person going to South Station: the commuter rail at US$12.25 or Amtrak is hard to beat. Three colleagues with a schedule of meetings across Boston and Cambridge: a car for the day is better value than three train tickets plus taxis, and it waits between meetings. We compare the app, the train and a fixed car on this corridor in Uber from Boston to Providence, and the Boston car service page has Logan fares.
How the costs compare for a group
Because a bus or train fare is per person and a car is per vehicle, the comparison flips as the group grows. Take the PVD to downtown run:
| Group | RIPTA bus | Elly8.net vehicle | Vehicle price | Price divided by group, for comparison only |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 traveller | US$2 | Business Sedan | US$125 | US$125 |
| 3 travellers | US$6 | Business Sedan | US$125 | about US$42 |
| 5 travellers | US$10 | Business SUV | US$165 | US$33 |
| 10 travellers | US$20 | Executive Sprinter | US$325 | US$32.50 |
The bus is always the cheapest, and we would not pretend otherwise. What the car buys is time, a door-to-door ride with luggage, flight tracking and a known cost. Taxis and app rides sit between the two, priced per vehicle like ours but not fixed in advance. When we would tell you not to book us
- A solo weekday trip from PVD to downtown with one bag: the train or the bus.
- A quick hop from a downtown hotel to Federal Hill for two: an app ride.
- A last-minute trip in the next half hour: a taxi from the stand. We take short-notice bookings when a partner is available, but a taxi is already there.
And when we would: a flight landing after the last airport train, a Sunday arrival, a family with child seats (available on request), anyone who needs a receipt with the price agreed in advance, corporate travellers on a corporate account, wedding guests and any group of five or more with bags. Our airport transfers page explains how the airport service works across all our cities.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a taxi stand at Providence airport?
Yes. Taxis wait at the Primary Taxi Pick-Up location outside the Lower Level arrivals and baggage claim area of the terminal, according to the airport. Taxi fares run on the meter. If you have booked an Elly8.net car, you skip the stand; the chauffeur meets you inside at baggage claim with a name board.
Where do Uber and Lyft pick up at PVD?
On the outer arrivals roadway, directly outside the Lower Level baggage claim area, in the zone the airport designates for ride-share. Collect your bags first, then request the ride. App prices are set when you request and can rise at busy times, which is why late or group arrivals often pre-book instead.
What is the cheapest way from PVD to downtown Providence?
The RIPTA bus at US$2 per boarding, from stops at the far end of the commercial roadway in front of the terminal. On weekdays, the MBTA commuter rail from the InterLink is another low-cost option. Both are best for one traveller with light luggage and some time to spare.
How much is a private car from PVD to downtown?
On Elly8.net, from US$125 in a business sedan, US$165 in a business SUV and US$325 in an Executive Sprinter, fixed and all-in per vehicle. That includes the chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet inside arrivals. Tolls, parking and extra waiting are billed at cost.
Can I hire a car by the hour in Providence?
Yes. The hourly chauffeur, as directed, starts at US$95 an hour in a business sedan, US$120 in a business SUV and US$190 in an Executive Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum. It suits graduation days, a run of meetings or a night out with several stops.
Is Uber or a taxi better for getting back from WaterFire?
Either can work if you walk a few blocks away from the river before you look for a ride, because the crowds leave at the same moment. If you have children, older relatives or a fixed plan, a pre-booked car with an agreed pickup point is the calmer choice.
