Lyft and Uber are more alike than their marketing suggests. Both are on-demand apps, both quote a price before you confirm, both price by time, distance and demand, and both use the same airport pickup zones because those are set by the airport, not by the app. On a normal day, for a normal trip, the price difference between the two is usually small and changes from moment to moment.
The useful comparison is not "which is cheaper", which neither company publishes as a fixed fare, but what you get in each tier, how each app handles booking ahead and airports, and when a taxi, a train or a pre-booked chauffeur at a fixed fare is the better buy. This guide covers all four, using the companies' own published descriptions and official airport and taxi figures.
Is Lyft or Uber cheaper?
Neither app publishes fixed fares. Both show a price before you request, calculated from distance, time and demand at that moment, so the cheaper app changes trip by trip. The practical habit is to check both at your actual travel time for the same tier. For a price that does not move, a taxi flat fare or a pre-booked fixed fare is the alternative.
Uber's explanation of upfront pricing says its price is based on estimated trip time and distance plus demand patterns for that route at that time, and already includes applicable tolls, taxes, surcharges and fees, except wait time fees. Lyft's rider pages describe a range of ride types priced for different budgets, from a budget-friendly wait-and-save option to luxury cars. In both cases the number you see is a quote for that moment. Ask again ten minutes later, after a concert ends or as rain starts, and it can be different.
That is why rideshare prices are not listed in this guide. Any number would be one snapshot. The figures below are official taxi and transit fares and fixed Elly8.net fares, which do not change with demand.
Matching the tiers
The fairest comparison is like for like. Based on each company's own pages:
| Need | Uber | Lyft |
|---|---|---|
| Cheapest shared or wait-longer option | Varies by city | Wait & Save (budget-friendly) |
| Standard private ride | UberX | Standard |
| Faster pickup | Varies by city | Priority Pickup |
| Newer, roomier car | Varies by city | Extra Comfort |
| Group or more space, up to 6 | UberXL | XL (up to 6) and XXL (up to 6, fits 4 to 6 suitcases) |
| Premium sedan | Uber Black (up to 4 passengers) | Black |
| Premium SUV, up to 6 | Uber Black SUV | Black SUV |
| Book ahead | Uber Reserve, up to 90 days | Scheduled rides; airport rides up to 90 days ahead |
Sources: Uber's ride options, UberX, Uber Black and UberXL; Lyft's rider page and airport rides page. Lyft notes that availability of ride types varies by region, and Uber says the same of its offerings.
Read the table as a guide to equivalents, not a promise: a tier offered in one city may not exist in the next, and the same tier can use different vehicles in different markets. Check the app where you are travelling. Two details stand out. Lyft lists an XXL tier with room for up to six people and four to six suitcases, which is aimed squarely at airport groups. And Lyft's airport page describes an on-time pickup promise for scheduled airport rides: the driver will be there within ten minutes of the pickup time, or the rider receives up to US$100 in credits, subject to terms. Uber, for its part, says Uber Reserve lets you book a premium ride up to 90 days ahead.
Memberships and perks
Both companies run subscription programmes. Lyft's rider page describes Lyft Pink as offering faster pickups at no extra cost, member-exclusive pricing and relaxed ride cancellations, plus partner rewards. Uber runs its own membership, Uber One; compare the current terms of each before you sign up. If you ride several times a week in one city, the membership that matches your main app may be worth more than any per-trip difference. If you ride a few times a year, it rarely matters. Business travellers are better served by whichever app their company already pays through, or by a corporate account with a pre-booked service that invoices monthly, such as Elly8.net corporate accounts.
Airports: the rules are the same for both
At airports, app pickups are controlled by the airport authority, so Lyft and Uber passengers usually walk to the same place.
- Las Vegas, Harry Reid International. The airport's taxi and ride share page puts ride share pickups on Level 2 of the parking garage at Terminal 1 and on the Valet Level of the garage at Terminal 3.
- New York, JFK. The airport's ride-share page notes that pickups for Terminals 5 and 7 have temporarily moved to the Howard Beach AirTrain Station during construction.
- Los Angeles, LAX. App rides and taxis are collected at the LAX-it lot, reached by shuttle bus from the terminals.
For one traveller with a backpack, none of this is a problem. With two children, a stroller and four suitcases, it becomes the main reason families book a car in advance. A pre-booked chauffeur meets you inside arrivals with a name board and walks you to the vehicle; our airport transfer service guide walks through that process.
The real alternatives: taxi, train and a fixed fare
Comparing two apps can hide the fact that, for some trips, neither is the best choice.
Official taxi fares. Between JFK and Manhattan, the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission sets a US$70 flat fare, plus surcharges, tolls and tip. In Las Vegas, the Nevada Taxicab Authority publishes approximate zone fares from the airport to the Strip of about US$22.25 to US$30.25, plus tax and fees. At O'Hare, the airport puts the average taxi fare to downtown at about US$50.
Trains and transit. Toronto's UP Express runs from Pearson to Union in about 28 minutes, every 15 minutes, at C$12.35 for an adult single. In Los Angeles, the Metro regular fare is US$1.75. For one person with light luggage, these beat any app.
A fixed fare booked in advance. Elly8.net publishes fixed, all-in fares per vehicle: JFK to Midtown from US$210 in a Business Sedan and US$275 in a Business SUV; Harry Reid to the Strip from US$125 in a Business Sedan and US$165 in a Business SUV; O'Hare to the Loop from US$215 and US$280. The price includes chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and airport meet and greet; tolls and parking are billed at cost.
| Situation | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One traveller, carry-on, daytime, near a station | Train or transit | Cheapest by far |
| One or two people, short trip, normal time | Lyft or Uber, check both | Quick and usually fair |
| Couple from the Las Vegas airport to a Strip hotel | Taxi | Published zone fares are hard to beat |
| Family of five with luggage and child seats | Pre-booked SUV | One vehicle, seats on request, meeting inside arrivals |
| Group of ten to one hotel | Pre-booked Executive Sprinter | Up to 12 passengers and 12 bags, one price |
| Late-night arrival or event night | Pre-booked car | No surge, no search for a pickup zone |
| Company travel with invoicing | Pre-booked car with a corporate account | Monthly invoicing, fixed prices |
Waiting, cancelling and the small print
The fine print differs between the apps and between tiers, and it matters most at airports and busy venues.
Waiting. Uber's Uber Black page describes a short grace period at pickup, after which per-minute wait time fees apply, and its upfront price excludes those fees. If you request while still waiting for a bag, the clock can start before you reach the kerb. For Lyft, check the current wait terms for your ride type in the app before you request.
Cancelling. Both apps can charge a cancellation fee in some circumstances, and Lyft lists relaxed ride cancellations as a Lyft Pink benefit. Read the current terms in the app, because they change.
Pre-booked cars. Elly8.net's terms are fixed and published: cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup; 10% within 72 hours; 50% within 48 hours; 100% within 24 hours or for a no-show. Waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary; waiting beyond the included time is billed at cost.
Four trips, four honest answers
A solo traveller landing at Pearson at noon, staying near Union Station. Take the UP Express at C$12.35. Neither app nor a chauffeur is better value.
A couple landing at Harry Reid with carry-ons, heading to a mid-Strip resort. A taxi at the published zone fare is the simplest and usually the cheapest. An app ride is fine too; check both apps and compare with the zone fare.
Two colleagues at JFK at 5:30 pm on a weekday with four checked bags. The taxi flat fare picks up the rush-hour surcharge, and app prices at the start of the evening peak are set at that moment. A pre-booked Business SUV is a fixed US$275 to Midtown, all-in, with the chauffeur inside arrivals.
A group of eight leaving a Chicago conference at closing time. Two XL rides means two requests at the moment every attendee is opening the same apps. One Executive Sprinter booked by the hour at US$200, with a fixed pickup point, keeps the group together; our how much it costs to rent a limo guide shows how hourly bookings are priced.
Comfort: closer than you think
Comfort depends more on the tier you choose than on the brand: a premium tier on either app puts you in a newer, larger car. If comfort is the point, compare Uber Black with Lyft Black, not UberX with Lyft Black. Our explainer on what Uber Black is covers the premium tier in more depth.
A chauffeured car differs in who operates it. Elly8.net rides in Toronto and the GTA are operated by the Elly8 fleet; in every other city they are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network, with Elly8.net taking the booking, fixing the price and running the 24/7 desk. Partner vehicles must be four model years old or newer.
Groups: XL, XXL or a Sprinter?
For six people, both apps offer an XL tier, and Lyft adds XXL with room for four to six suitcases. For seven or more, you need two app rides, which means two prices, two pickups and two arrival times. The Elly8.net Executive Sprinter carries up to twelve passengers and twelve bags in one vehicle, from US$325 from Harry Reid to the Strip and US$550 from JFK to Midtown, per vehicle. Our Sprinter van limousine guide compares it with two SUVs.
For a night out with a group, the bigger issue is the end of the evening, when everyone requests at once. See our guide to a night out limo.
A simple routine for choosing
- Check both apps for the same tier at the time you will actually travel.
- Compare with the official alternative: the taxi flat or zone fare, or the airport train.
- Price the fixed option for the same vehicle size on the city page, such as New York City fares, Las Vegas fares or Chicago fares.
- Weigh what is not in the price: luggage, children, a late flight, a meeting, a group that must stay together.
If the answer is an app, use the cheaper one. If it is a fixed fare, book it in advance. The chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft comparison and the airport transfers service page explain the booked option in detail.
Frequently asked questions
Is Uber or Lyft cheaper?
It depends on the trip and the moment. Neither company publishes fixed fares; both quote a price at request time based on distance, time and demand. The reliable habit is to check both for the same tier when you travel. For a price that does not change, use an official taxi flat fare or a pre-booked fixed fare.
Which app is better at the airport?
Usually neither, because airports set the pickup zones for both. At Harry Reid International, both use Level 2 of the Terminal 1 garage and the Valet Level of the Terminal 3 garage. A pre-booked chauffeur differs: the flight is tracked and the chauffeur waits inside arrivals with a name board.
Can you schedule a Lyft or Uber in advance?
Yes. Lyft says airport rides can be scheduled up to 90 days ahead, with an on-time pickup promise subject to terms, and Uber says Uber Reserve books premium rides up to 90 days ahead. A pre-booked chauffeur adds a fixed price set at booking and meet and greet inside the terminal.
What is the Lyft equivalent of Uber Black?
Lyft Black, which Lyft describes as luxury cars with top drivers, and Lyft Black SUV for groups of up to six. Uber Black seats up to four passengers and Uber Black SUV up to six. Availability of premium tiers varies by city on both apps.
Which app is best for six people with luggage?
Both offer an XL tier for up to six passengers, and Lyft lists an XXL tier that fits four to six suitcases. A pre-booked Business SUV carries up to six passengers and six bags at a fixed price, and an Executive Sprinter carries up to twelve with twelve bags.
Are Elly8.net prices per person?
No. Elly8.net prices are per vehicle and include chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and airport meet and greet, with tolls and parking billed at cost. Dividing a fare by the number of passengers is arithmetic for comparison only.
