Uber Black is the premium ride option in the Uber app. You request it like any other Uber, but the vehicle is a high-end, late-model luxury sedan or SUV and the driver is one Uber describes as professional and top-rated. The price is shown before you confirm, and it is calculated for that trip at that moment, so the same journey can cost more at a busy time than at a quiet one.
A taxi and a pre-booked chauffeur sit on either side of it. A regulated taxi runs on a meter or an official flat fare set by a city authority. A chauffeur booked through Elly8.net runs on a fixed, all-in price agreed when you book, with flight tracking and a meeting inside arrivals. All three can be the right answer. This guide explains which, and when.
What is Uber Black, exactly?
Uber Black is Uber's premium on-demand tier: a high-end, late-model luxury sedan with room for up to 4 passengers, or Uber Black SUV for up to 6. You see an upfront price before requesting, set by distance, time and demand at that moment. It can also be reserved ahead through Uber Reserve.
According to Uber's own Uber Black page, the fleet includes high-end, late-model luxury sedans and SUVs, a standard Uber Black carries up to four passengers and Uber Black SUV seats up to six. Riders can set preferences such as cabin temperature, luggage assistance and conversation level in the app. The same page notes a short grace period at pickup, after which per-minute wait time fees apply, and that the driver may charge a cancellation fee if the rider does not board.
Uber's explanation of upfront pricing says the price is based on estimated trip time and distance plus demand patterns for that route at that time, and includes applicable tolls, taxes, surcharges and fees, except wait time fees. The app also offers Uber Reserve, which Uber says lets you book a premium ride up to 90 days in advance. Lyft runs comparable premium tiers, Lyft Black and Black SUV, in select cities; our Lyft vs Uber post compares the two apps.
How the three options are priced
The biggest practical difference is not the car. It is how the price is set.
Taxi: regulated. In most North American cities taxi fares are set by a public authority, either as a meter rate or an airport flat fare. Between JFK and Manhattan, for example, the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission sets a US$70 flat fare in either direction, plus a 50-cent MTA surcharge, a US$1.00 improvement surcharge, a US$5.00 surcharge from 4 pm to 8 pm on weekdays, the congestion surcharge, tolls, tip and a US$2.00 airport access fee for pickups at JFK. In Las Vegas, the Nevada Taxicab Authority publishes approximate zone fares from the airport to the Strip of about US$22.25 to US$30.25, plus a 3% excise tax, a US$3.00 card fee and a fuel surcharge set by the Authority.
Uber Black: dynamic. No fixed fare is published. The app quotes a price for the moment you request, and it moves with demand. That is why any single online figure for "Uber Black from the airport" is a snapshot.
Pre-booked chauffeur: fixed in advance. Elly8.net publishes its fares by city. From JFK to Midtown Manhattan the fixed price is US$210 in a Business Sedan and US$370 in a First Class Sedan; from Harry Reid International to the Las Vegas Strip it is US$125 in a Business Sedan and US$220 in a First Class Sedan. Those prices include the chauffeur, vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and airport meet and greet, with tolls and parking billed at cost. They do not change with demand.
Side by side
| Taxi | Uber Black | Pre-booked chauffeur (Elly8.net) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How price is set | Official meter or flat fare | Upfront price set at request, varies with demand | Fixed when you book, all-in |
| Vehicle | Licensed taxi | High-end, late-model sedan or SUV | Business or First Class Sedan, SUV, Sprinter and more |
| Passengers (standard car) | Varies by vehicle | Up to 4 (Black SUV up to 6) | Sedan up to 3, SUV up to 6, Executive Sprinter up to 12 |
| Airport meeting point | Taxi rank | App pickup zone set by the airport | Inside arrivals with a name board |
| Flight delay | Join the queue on arrival | Request after landing | Flight tracked; waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary |
| Booking ahead | Limited | Uber Reserve, up to 90 days | Any time; corporate accounts with monthly invoicing |
| Best for | Short metered trips, one or two people | Spontaneous premium trips at normal times | Airports, groups, schedules and fixed budgets |
One honest note on passenger numbers: Uber lists a standard Uber Black at up to four passengers, while the Elly8.net Business and First Class Sedans are listed at up to three passengers and two bags. Four adults with luggage should book a Business SUV for up to six passengers and six bags, whichever service they use.
Where each option wins
Take the taxi when you are one or two people with light bags, the airport has a good flat fare or a short metered trip, and you are happy to join the rank. In Las Vegas a taxi to a Strip hotel is often the best value of all. In New York the JFK flat fare is predictable, although the surcharges add up at rush hour.
Take Uber Black when the trip is spontaneous, the city has plenty of premium drivers, it is not a peak moment and you want a nicer car than a standard ride. For a short hop between meetings on a quiet afternoon, it does the job well.
Book a chauffeur when the timing matters more than the minute-by-minute price:
- Late or international arrivals. The chauffeur tracks the flight and waits inside arrivals, so a long immigration queue is not a problem. App rides at many airports are collected from designated zones; at Harry Reid International, ride-share pickups are on Level 2 of the Terminal 1 garage and the Valet Level of the Terminal 3 garage.
- Groups and luggage. An Executive Sprinter carries up to twelve passengers and twelve bags in one vehicle, priced once.
- Families with child seats. Child seats are available on request when you book.
- Clients and meetings. A known chauffeur, a name board and a vehicle class confirmed in advance.
- Event nights. After a concert or a game, demand for app rides peaks at the same moment the streets fill. A staged car with a confirmed pickup corner avoids both. Our guide to a night out limo covers how that works.
- Fixed budgets and company billing. A price that is set before the trip, an invoice and monthly billing through corporate accounts.
Is Uber Black the same as a black car service?
Not quite. "Black car service" is the traditional name for pre-arranged chauffeured cars, usually booked by phone, travel desk or website, priced in advance and often billed to a company. Uber Black borrows the look, a dark luxury car and a professional driver, but keeps the on-demand model: you request it when you need it and pay the price of that moment.
A black car service and an executive car service are built around the booking rather than the request. The chauffeur knows the passenger name, flight number, destination and any special requests before the day. For an executive assistant arranging travel for several people, that difference matters more than the car itself. Our detailed Uber Black vs chauffeur comparison covers it point by point.
A worked example: three ways from JFK to Midtown
Imagine two colleagues landing at JFK on a weekday at 5:30 pm with two checked bags each, heading to a Midtown hotel.
- Taxi. The US$70 flat fare applies, plus the rush-hour surcharge (the trip starts between 4 pm and 8 pm), the other surcharges, the airport access fee, tolls and tip. They join the taxi rank after collecting bags. With four large bags, a sedan taxi may be tight.
- Uber Black. They request the ride after collecting bags. The price shown is the price for that moment, at the start of the evening peak. At Terminals 5 and 7, JFK's ride-share page notes that pickups have temporarily moved to the Howard Beach AirTrain Station during construction, so they may need the AirTrain first.
- Pre-booked chauffeur. Four checked bags means a Business SUV, which is a fixed US$275 from JFK to Midtown, all-in, per vehicle. The chauffeur tracks the flight and waits inside arrivals. Tolls and parking are billed at cost.
For that pair, at that hour, with that luggage, the pre-booked SUV is the calm option. For one colleague with a carry-on at 11 am, the taxi or the AirTrain at US$8.75 plus the onward subway or rail fare is cheaper, and we would say so.
The extras each option can add, compared fairly
Headline prices are only part of the story. Each model has its own extras, and it is worth knowing them before you compare.
Taxi. Official surcharges are added to the meter or flat fare: in New York, the rush-hour, improvement, MTA and congestion surcharges and the airport access fee, plus tolls and the tip. In Las Vegas, the excise tax and the card fee. None of these are hidden; they are published by the regulator, but they are easy to forget when you compare.
Uber Black. Uber says its upfront price already includes tolls, taxes, surcharges and fees, except wait time fees. Those apply per minute if you do not board within the grace period, and a cancellation fee may apply if you never board. At an airport where you are still in the baggage hall when the car arrives, that matters.
Pre-booked chauffeur. At Elly8.net the fixed fare includes taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost, and the cancellation charges are fixed in advance. Waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary, so a delayed flight does not add to the bill.
The fairest way to compare is to price the same trip, at the same hour, in the same vehicle size, with everything included.

Frequently asked questions
What is Uber Black?
Uber Black is the premium tier of the Uber app. Uber describes its vehicles as high-end, late-model luxury sedans and SUVs with professional drivers. A standard Uber Black seats up to four passengers and Uber Black SUV up to six. The price is shown upfront when you request and depends on time, distance and demand.
Is Uber Black more expensive than a taxi?
Usually, yes, because it is a premium tier, but the gap depends on the moment you request. Taxi fares are set by city authorities; the JFK to Manhattan taxi flat fare is US$70 plus surcharges, tolls and tip. Uber Black prices are set by the app at request time and can rise at busy periods.
Is Uber Black cheaper than a car service?
Sometimes, on a quiet day for a short trip. A pre-booked car service costs the same whatever the demand, and Elly8.net fares include taxes, standard gratuity and airport meet and greet. Compare the app's quote at your real travel time with the fixed fare for the same route and vehicle size.
Can you schedule Uber Black in advance?
Uber says its Uber Reserve feature lets you book a premium ride up to 90 days ahead. A pre-booked chauffeur differs in how the price and pickup are handled: the Elly8.net fare is fixed at booking, the flight is tracked and the chauffeur meets you inside arrivals with a name board.
How many people fit in Uber Black?
According to Uber, a standard Uber Black carries up to four passengers and Uber Black SUV up to six. For comparison, Elly8.net lists its sedans at up to three passengers and two bags, its SUVs at up to six passengers and six bags, and the Executive Sprinter at up to twelve passengers and twelve bags.
When is a taxi the better choice?
When you are one or two people with light bags, the trip is short or covered by a good official flat fare, and you do not mind the taxi rank. The Las Vegas airport zone fares to the Strip start at about US$22.25, which is hard to beat for a couple with carry-ons.
