An Edmonton taxi charges exactly the fare set in the City's Vehicle for Hire Bylaw 17400: C$4.10 for the first 135 metres when you hail it on the street, or C$3.50 when you book through an app or a written agreement, then C$0.25 for every further 135 metres and C$0.20 for every 24 seconds of waiting. No other fees can be added. Rideshare cars, which the City calls transportation network vehicles, must charge at least C$3.50 per trip, and above that the price is up to the company.
So the choice in Edmonton is less about hidden costs than about how each one behaves when the city is busy: after an Oilers game, in a January storm, on a festival weekend or at the airport curb. This guide from the Elly8.net desk lays out the official numbers, explains what drives waits, and says plainly when a taxi or the bus is the right call and when a pre-booked car is worth it.
How much is a taxi in Edmonton?
Edmonton taxis use the City's regulated fare: C$4.10 for the first 135 metres on a street hail, or C$3.50 if pre-arranged by app or written agreement, then C$0.25 per additional 135 metres and C$0.20 per 24 seconds of waiting. That works out to about C$1.85 per kilometre and C$30 per hour of waiting.
The figures are on the City of Edmonton's vehicle-for-hire passenger page, which also states that no additional fees can be added to taxi and accessible taxi rates. If a taxi arrives and you have gone without telling anyone, the cancellation charge is the minimum fare. The per-kilometre and per-hour figures above are our arithmetic from the bylaw increments, not separate rates.

What common Edmonton trips cost on the meter
As arithmetic only, using the bylaw rates for a street hail, our routed distances, and no time stopped in traffic:
| Trip | Distance | Meter estimate, no waiting | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downtown to Whyte Avenue | 4 km (2.6 mi) | about C$12 | Short hop across the river |
| Downtown to Commonwealth Stadium | 3 km (1.9 mi) | about C$10 | Game-night traffic adds waiting time |
| Downtown to West Edmonton Mall | 12 km (7.5 mi) | about C$26 | Plus waiting at lights |
| Downtown to Sherwood Park | 15 km (9.5 mi) | about C$32 | Depends on the exact address |
| Downtown to YEG airport | 32 km (20 mi) | about C$63, but capped | Taxis must charge the meter or the C$62 airport flat rate, whichever is less |
Every minute stopped or crawling adds C$0.50 at the waiting rate, so a 20-minute crossing that spends five minutes in a game-night jam costs about C$2.50 more than the table. Tips are on top. The airport line is the useful check: the meter and the published flat rate land almost exactly together, and the City rule means you pay the lower of the two.
How rideshare works in Edmonton
The City sets the rules for rideshare as well, and they shape how you use it.
- App only. Rideshare vehicles must be booked in advance, usually through an app. Only taxis and accessible taxis may be hailed or flagged on the street in Edmonton.
- Minimum fare. At least C$3.50 per trip. Above that, additional charges are at the company's discretion, so the price moves with demand.
- Ask for an estimate. The City says you can request an estimated fare before the ride. Check it against the meter estimate above.
- Identify the car. Rideshare vehicles must show the dispatcher's name or logo on the front and rear.
At the airport, rideshare pickup is outside Door 10 on the Arrivals level, and the airport's ground transportation page notes that drivers there must carry commercial insurance and a Class 4 licence, and cannot use the taxi stands. Rideshare prices are not published in advance, so we do not quote them; the right habit is to compare the app's estimate with the bylaw meter and with a fixed price when the trip matters.
Taxi vs rideshare vs bus vs a booked car
| Option | How the price is set | How you get one | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| ETS bus and LRT | Transit fare; C$6 on Route 747 to the airport | Schedules, stops and stations | One traveller, light bag, no rush |
| Taxi | Bylaw meter, the same in every cab | Hail, taxi stand, phone or app | Short trips, airport walk-ups at the C$62 flat rate |
| Rideshare | C$3.50 minimum, then set by the company | App only | Flexible trips with light luggage |
| Elly8.net chauffeur | Fixed before you pay, per vehicle, in US$ | Booked ahead online | Groups, late nights, airports, events, company travel |
For the airport bus, the City's Route 747 page lists a C$6 fare and service from about 4:10 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. at 30 to 60 minute intervals between the airport and Century Park, where you change to the LRT. For a solo traveller with a carry-on, it is genuinely the cheapest way in.
What makes you wait in Edmonton
Neither taxis nor rideshare companies publish wait times, but the conditions that stretch them are predictable.
Game and concert nights. When Rogers Place empties after an Oilers game or a sold-out show, thousands of people leave at once. Expect the streets around the ICE District to fill and app prices to rise for a while. The same happens at Commonwealth Stadium after a football game or a big summer concert.
Snow and cold. A heavy snowfall slows every car on the road, and on a bitterly cold night more people want a ride and fewer want to walk to a bus stop. Waiting outside for a car that is ten minutes away is a different experience at minus 25.
Festival weekends. K-Days usually runs in late July, and the Fringe fills Old Strathcona in August. Demand for cars rises across the city on those nights.
Late nights. As transit thins out after midnight, everyone heading home competes for the same cars, especially around Whyte Avenue and downtown.
The airport curb. When several flights land together, the taxi rank at Door 9 and the rideshare zone at Door 10 both get busier. A booked chauffeur meets you inside arrivals instead; our Edmonton airport limo guide walks through it.
Five habits that save money and time
- Book the taxi instead of hailing it. The bylaw minimum is C$3.50 when the ride is pre-arranged by app or written agreement, against C$4.10 on a street hail. It is a small saving, but it also means the car comes to you.
- Check the estimate. Before accepting an app ride, compare its estimate with the meter arithmetic for your distance. On a quiet afternoon they are often close; after a game they may not be.
- Walk away from the crowd. After an event, a pickup two or three blocks from the arena exits is usually quicker to reach than the corner everyone else is standing on.
- Plan the late ride early. If you know you will leave Whyte Avenue at 1 a.m., arrange the ride home before you go out rather than at closing time.
- Match the car to the group. Six people in two cabs pay two fares; six people in one SUV pay for one vehicle.
When a taxi or rideshare is the right choice
Be honest about the trip. If you are one or two people going a few kilometres in daylight with ordinary bags, a taxi at the bylaw rate or an app ride is the sensible choice, and nothing we sell beats it on price. The same goes for a solo airport run outside peak hours: the C$62 flat-rate taxi from Door 9 is fair value. And for a single traveller with time to spare, the 747 and the LRT cost C$6.
When a pre-booked car is the better buy
Groups. Four colleagues with bags usually need two cabs. A business SUV carries up to 6 passengers and 6 bags, and an Executive Sprinter up to 12 with 12 bags, as one vehicle. On the YEG run, the Sprinter is US$405 for the vehicle.
Event nights. The evening out and event night package keeps a chauffeur with you for five hours, from US$550 in a business sedan to US$1,100 in a Sprinter, so the car is waiting at an agreed corner when the arena empties. See sports event transportation.
A car that waits. For meetings, site visits or a day of errands, hourly chauffeur service runs from US$110 an hour in a business sedan, with a 3-hour minimum. The car stays with you between stops.
Families. Child seats are fitted on request before pickup, which neither a hailed cab nor an app ride can promise.
Company travel. A corporate account puts every ride on one monthly invoice in US dollars, with NDAs on request.
A fixed budget. The price is set before you travel and does not move with demand, traffic or weather.
The longer comparisons are on chauffeur vs taxi, chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft and Uber Black vs a pre-booked chauffeur.

Frequently asked questions
What is the taxi rate in Edmonton?
Under Bylaw 17400, a street-hailed taxi charges C$4.10 for the first 135 metres, or C$3.50 if pre-arranged by app or written agreement, then C$0.25 for each additional 135 metres and C$0.20 for each 24 seconds of waiting. No extra fees may be added. That is roughly C$1.85 per kilometre.
How much is a taxi from Edmonton airport to downtown?
YEG publishes a flat taxi rate of C$62 to downtown Edmonton, and C$71 by limo, from Door 9 on the Arrivals level. City rules say taxis to the airport must charge the meter or the flat-rate map, whichever is less. An Elly8.net fixed transfer starts at US$155 per vehicle.
Can you hail an Uber in Edmonton?
No. Only taxis and accessible taxis can be hailed or flagged on the street in Edmonton. Rideshare vehicles must be booked in advance, usually through the app, and at YEG they pick up outside Door 10. You can ask for an estimated fare before the ride.
Is rideshare cheaper than a taxi in Edmonton?
Sometimes. Rideshare must charge at least C$3.50 per trip, but above that the price is set by the company and rises with demand, for example after a game or in a storm. A taxi always charges the bylaw meter. Compare the app's estimate with the meter before you accept.
When is a pre-booked car worth it over a taxi?
When you are a group, carrying a lot of luggage, travelling with children, heading to or from an event, or need the car to wait. A booked car costs more than a short taxi ride, but the price is fixed per vehicle, the chauffeur is waiting for you, and nothing changes with traffic or demand.
Do you have accessible vehicles?
Edmonton's accessible taxis are wheelchair accessible and can be hailed or booked, and the City lists DATS for pre-booked accessible transit. If you need an accessible vehicle through Elly8.net, tell the desk at booking so we can confirm one with our local partner before you pay.
