At Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC), on-demand taxi service is provided by one company, Yellow Cab of Utah, operating 24/7. Its rate card, linked from the airport's own ground transportation page, shows a US$5.00 flag and US$2.70 per mile plus airport gate fees, a US$25.00 minimum for trips within a zone around the airport, and the same price for one to five passengers.

That makes the taxi a strong option for short trips and small groups, and often cheaper than a pre-booked car to downtown. This guide sets out the real numbers, compares them with the TRAX Green Line, ride apps and the Elly8.net fixed fares, and says plainly when each one is the right call.

How much is a taxi in Salt Lake City?

From SLC, Yellow Cab of Utah's published rate is a US$5.00 flag plus US$2.70 per mile, plus airport gate fees, with a US$25.00 minimum inside a zone around the airport. One to five passengers pay the same price. Downtown lies outside that zone, so it runs on the meter; distance alone to downtown comes to roughly US$29 before gate fees.

That downtown estimate is simple arithmetic on the published rate: the fact-sheet route from SLC to downtown is about 9 mi (14 km), so US$5.00 plus nine miles at US$2.70 is about US$29. Your actual fare depends on the exact route, the gate fee and the destination. The airport notes that the cab company's GPS dispatch shows passengers the exact fare to their destination.

How the airport taxi system works

The SLC ground transportation page lays out the options at the terminal:

  • Taxi. Yellow Cab of Utah is the airport's only on-demand taxi provider and serves the airport 24/7. Rides can be booked online through the link on the airport page or by phone, and the airport points to GPS dispatch that lets passengers see the route and text the driver.
  • Ride apps. Uber, Lyft and Park City Rides are licensed to operate at SLC, picking up at designated areas marked by curbside signs on the ground level in B-Lane.
  • Hotel shuttles. Hotel transportation stops on the ground level of the terminal between columns 1B and 5B.
  • Shuttles and limousines. Several providers have airport counter service on the ground level, and others work by reservation.
  • Accessible transportation. The airport lists companies with vehicles equipped for wheelchairs, with ramps or lifts.

The taxi rate card itself is published as an image linked from the airport site. It also states that drivers are required to let you use the credit card processing provided in the vehicle.

The TRAX figure comes from the airport's public transportation page, which places the Airport TRAX station on the ground level outside the east side of the terminal, reached by exiting door 1A. UTA's TRAX service page describes the Green Line running from West Valley to the airport.

Four airport trips, worked through

The taxi figures below are distance-only arithmetic on the published rate card, before airport gate fees; the Elly8.net figures are the fixed fares.

One traveler to a downtown hotel. TRAX at US$2.50, a taxi at roughly US$29, an Elly8.net Business Sedan at US$125. Unless it is late at night or you have a meeting to reach, TRAX or the taxi is the right answer.

Four colleagues to the Salt Palace. One taxi at roughly US$29 for all four, about US$7 each, against a Business SUV at US$165. The taxi wins on price. The SUV wins if the four land on different flights and want one confirmed vehicle waiting, or if the company needs the trip on a monthly invoice.

A family of six with skis to Park City. The rate card covers one to five passengers, so six people means two cabs at roughly US$108 each on distance, plus gate fees, and the skis split between two trunks. One Business SUV at a fixed US$400 keeps the family and the gear together with child seats fitted before pickup. The costs are close; the logistics are not.

Twelve friends to Park City. Three cabs at roughly US$108 each is about US$324 plus three sets of gate fees, against one Executive Sprinter at US$795. The cabs are cheaper. The Sprinter buys one vehicle, one arrival time at the lodge, room for twelve bags and a price confirmed before anyone boards a plane. Our Salt Lake City Sprinter guide covers group trips.

When the taxi is the smarter choice

We would rather you paid less than book a car you do not need. The taxi is the better buy when:

  • You are going a short distance. Trips inside the airport zone start from the US$25.00 minimum, and a downtown trip by distance is around US$29 before gate fees, well under our US$125 sedan.
  • You are two to five people with ordinary luggage. One to five passengers pay the same fare, so splitting a cab to downtown is very good value.
  • You decided at the last minute. On-demand service around the clock means no planning is needed.

And TRAX beats both when you are one person with a carry-on, staying near a downtown station, at US$2.50. If you are unsure which applies, the honest test is simple: if nobody needs to be met, nothing needs to be fitted and nothing needs to be invoiced, take the train or the cab.

When a pre-booked car wins

More than five people, or a lot of gear. The taxi rate card covers one to five passengers. A family of six with ski bags fits one Elly8.net Business SUV at US$165, and a group of twelve fits one Executive Sprinter at US$325, with a single fixed price and one vehicle.

Late or delayed arrivals. The chauffeur tracks the flight, meets you inside arrivals at baggage claim with a name board, and complimentary waiting after a tracked landing is included. Nothing has to be requested after landing.

Child seats. Available on request and fitted before pickup.

Mountain addresses in winter. This is where the comparison is most interesting. By the published meter, Main Street Park City at about 38 mi (62 km) from SLC comes to roughly US$108 on distance alone, plus gate fees, which is less than the Elly8.net fixed fare of US$305 in a Business Sedan or US$400 in a Business SUV, published on our Park City car service page. What the fixed fare buys is a confirmed vehicle sized for your skis, a chauffeur waiting inside, and a price that does not move on a slow storm night. For the Cottonwood Canyons, UDOT's traction rules apply when the beacons are flashing, and we recommend an SUV or a Sprinter; our SLC airport transfer guide covers mountain transfers in detail.

Corporate travel. A fixed price in writing, a corporate account with monthly invoicing, saved traveler profiles and one 24/7 desk.

A whole evening, not one ride. For a game at the Delta Center or a dinner in the city, the 5-hour evening out and event night package keeps one car with you, from US$475 in a Business Sedan. Groups heading out together should read our Salt Lake City party bus guide.

Taxis around the city, beyond the airport

Away from SLC, taxis are most useful for short point-to-point trips: a hotel to a restaurant, the convention center to a meeting, a late return after an event. For a day of several stops, the arithmetic changes. Three or four separate cab rides, each with its own wait at the curb, can approach the cost of an hourly booking, and an hourly chauffeur keeps the car waiting outside each stop. Hourly service in Salt Lake City runs from US$95 an hour in a Business Sedan with a 3-hour minimum; see our hourly chauffeur page.

The Visit Salt Lake official guide is useful for planning the stops, and Temple Square, the Salt Palace and the Delta Center are all within a short drive of each other downtown.

Ride apps in Salt Lake City

Uber and Lyft are widely used in the city and at the airport. The fare is set by the app when you request it and moves with demand, which is most noticeable after games, during big conventions and on storm nights. On an ordinary afternoon for one or two people, an app ride to downtown will usually cost less than our sedan. Our chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft comparison covers the trade-offs, and chauffeur vs taxi explains the general case for each.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a taxi from Salt Lake City airport to downtown?

Yellow Cab of Utah's published rate is a US$5.00 flag and US$2.70 per mile, plus airport gate fees. The route to downtown is about 9 mi (14 km), so distance alone comes to roughly US$29 before gate fees. One to five passengers pay the same fare.

Which taxi company serves SLC airport?

The airport names Yellow Cab of Utah as its only on-demand taxi cab provider, serving airport customers 24/7. Rides can be booked through the link on the airport's ground transportation page or by phone, and the airport describes GPS dispatch that shows passengers the exact fare to their destination.

Is TRAX cheaper than a taxi from the airport?

Yes. The airport lists the TRAX one-way fare at US$2.50. The Airport TRAX station is on the ground level outside the east side of the terminal, reached by exiting door 1A. For one traveler with light luggage near a station, it is the cheapest way downtown.

Is a taxi cheaper than a pre-booked car to Park City?

On distance alone, usually yes: about 38 mi at the published meter rate comes to roughly US$108 plus gate fees, against an Elly8.net fixed fare of US$305 in a Business Sedan. The pre-booked car buys a confirmed vehicle for your skis, a chauffeur waiting inside and a price fixed before you fly.

Where do ride apps pick up at SLC?

Uber, Lyft and Park City Rides pick up at designated areas marked by curbside signs on the ground level in B-Lane, according to the airport. The fare is set by the app when you request it. Elly8.net chauffeurs meet passengers inside arrivals at baggage claim instead.

What is the best option for a group of six or more?

A pre-booked vehicle. The taxi rate card covers one to five passengers. With Elly8.net, a Business SUV carries six passengers and six bags from SLC to downtown for US$165, and an Executive Sprinter carries twelve with twelve bags for US$325, both fixed and all-in.
