A Rome taxi is one of the better-regulated rides in Europe. The city sets every fare: a fixed €55 per car from Fiumicino and €40 from Ciampino to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls, all supplements included, and a meter for everything else with a published starting charge, three per-kilometre steps and a short list of extras. If you know the rules, a licensed white taxi is honest value for most trips in the city.
There are times it is not the best plan: a family with six cases and two car seats, a group of eight, a late arrival when the rank is under pressure, a cruise day or a day out of the city. For those, a pre-booked Elly8.net car costs from US$180 from Fiumicino and US$125 from Ciampino, fixed per vehicle in US$. This guide sets out the taxi rules in full, then says plainly when to use each.
How much is a taxi from Fiumicino to central Rome?
A licensed taxi from Fiumicino to anywhere inside Rome's Aurelian Walls costs a fixed €55 per car, all supplements included, and the same in the other direction. From Ciampino the fixed fare is €40. Trips to other addresses inside the ring road from Fiumicino are metered but capped at €80.
Those figures are published by Roma Servizi per la Mobilità, the city's mobility agency, and repeated on Aeroporti di Roma's taxi page. Roma Mobilità gives the journey from Fiumicino to the centre as about 40 to 50 minutes, and from Ciampino about 30 minutes. The fixed fares are per vehicle, not per person, and apply only when the trip goes directly to the address given, without detours or extra pickups.
Every fixed airport fare in Rome
| From | To | Fixed fare per car |
|---|---|---|
| Fiumicino | Rome inside the Aurelian Walls | €55 |
| Fiumicino | Roma Tiburtina station | €60 |
| Fiumicino | Roma Ostiense station | €50 |
| Fiumicino | Civitavecchia port | €130 |
| Fiumicino | Ciampino airport | €55 |
| Fiumicino | Nuova Fiera di Roma | €26 |
| Fiumicino | Castello della Magliana, Parco dei Medici | €31 |
| Ciampino | Rome inside the Aurelian Walls | €40 |
| Ciampino | Roma Tiburtina or Ostiense station | €40 |
Two more rules from ADR fill in the gaps. For trips between Fiumicino and an address inside the Grande Raccordo Anulare ring road with no fixed fare, the metered amount cannot exceed €80. For destinations from Fiumicino with no fixed fare, the minimum is €35. All fixed fares are valid in both directions and include all supplements.
How the meter works for trips around the city
Away from the airports, Rome taxis run on a single progressive meter set by the city, and Roma Mobilità publishes the full tariff.
| Element | 2026 amount | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Starting charge, weekdays | €3.50 | Monday to Friday, 6:00 to 22:00 |
| Starting charge, Saturdays and holidays | €5.00 | 6:00 to 22:00 |
| Starting charge, night | €7.50 | 22:00 to 6:00 |
| Distance rate T1 | €1.33 per km | Above 20 km/h, until the meter adds €7 to the starting charge |
| Distance rate T2 | €1.45 per km | Above 20 km/h, for the next €25 |
| Distance rate T3 | €1.73 per km | Above 20 km/h, for the rest of the trip |
| Time rate | €32.58 per hour | Below 20 km/h, in slow traffic |
In plain terms: the meter starts at €3.50 on a weekday daytime ride, climbs by distance when the car is moving and by time when it is stuck, and the per-kilometre rate steps up as the fare grows, so long trips cost a little more per kilometre than short ones. Inside the historic centre most rides are short; by our routed estimates on a clear road, the centre to the Vatican Museums is about 4 km (2 mi) and Termini station to Trastevere about 6 km (3 mi), so typical daytime hops are modest fares. Slow traffic, not distance, is what pushes a city fare up.
Supplements on metered rides. The first bag is free; each additional bag larger than 35 by 25 by 50 cm costs €1. From the fifth passenger onward, in cars with more than four seats, €5 per passenger. Booking by radio taxi adds a fixed €5 call fee. None of these apply on top of the airport fixed fares, which already include all supplements.
One discount worth knowing. Roma Mobilità sets a 15% discount on the metered amount for women travelling alone at night, from 22:00 to 6:00. It does not apply to fixed fares or to trips to or from airports and ports.
How to get an official taxi, and how to spot one
At the airports. At Fiumicino, ADR says taxis wait at the Arrivals level of Terminal 1 and Terminal 3; at Ciampino, Roma Mobilità says they wait in the square in front of the airport. Use only the marked ranks. ADR warns that any other vehicle offering rides in the arrivals area may not hold a taxi licence and may charge a different fare.
In the city. Look for a rank, or call ChiamaTaxi on 060609, the city's own service. Roma Mobilità explains that an automated system takes your address and passes the call to the nearest taxi rank, then to the nearest free taxi registered to the service if the rank is empty; there is also an app. A radio-taxi booking adds the €5 call fee.
Recognising a genuine Rome taxi. It is white, with a TAXI sign on the roof, the Roma Capitale symbol and the licence number on the front doors, and the licence number again inside on the rear left door. The meter sits above the dashboard or at the top of the windscreen. The meter should be switched on; Roma Mobilità advises asking the driver to start it if it is not, and drivers must give a receipt on request. Ask for one every time.
Paying, receipts and tipping
Settle the practical details before the car moves. ADR advises passengers to check the ride conditions, the expected fare and the available payment methods with the driver before departure, especially for destinations without a fixed fare, so ask whether a card will be accepted if you are not carrying euros. On the airport routes the fixed fare is the whole price: €55 or €40 per car, with nothing added for bags or extra passengers. Ask for a receipt at the end of every ride, which drivers must provide on request; it is also your record if anything needs to be checked later. On a pre-booked Elly8.net car, standard gratuity is already included in the fixed price, so there is nothing to settle on the day.
Rank waits and rideshare
There are no published waiting times for Rome's ranks, so be wary of anyone who quotes one. The pattern is predictable, though. At Fiumicino the taxi queue lengthens when several long-haul flights land close together, as transatlantic arrivals often do in the morning; it moves, but a family with luggage feels every minute. In the city, waits are longest when demand peaks: late at night, on rainy evenings and after a match or concert at the Stadio Olimpico.
Rideshare in Rome is closely tied to the taxi system. The Uber app's Taxi option dispatches licensed Rome taxis, while its higher tiers are licensed hire cars with professional drivers, which in Italy must be booked in advance rather than taken from a rank. Our guide to Uber in Rome explains what the app offers, how demand pricing works for its non-taxi tiers, and where pickups happen at Fiumicino.
The train is the other honest option from Fiumicino. Trenitalia's Leonardo Express runs nonstop to Roma Termini in 32 minutes for €14, or €40 for four tickets bought together, every 15 minutes, with airport departures between 05:38 and 23:27 according to ADR.
Taxi, train, app or a pre-booked car: which to choose
| Situation | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One traveller, light bag, staying near Termini | Leonardo Express | €14, 32 minutes, no traffic |
| Two travellers, normal bags, central hotel | Taxi from the rank | €55 fixed per car from Fiumicino, honest value |
| Short hop in the centre by day | Taxi or app | Short metered fare, quick to find |
| Family with car seats and four or more large cases | Pre-booked SUV or van | Seats fitted, luggage space confirmed, meeting inside |
| Group of seven to twelve | Pre-booked Executive Sprinter | One vehicle instead of two or three taxis |
| Arrival after the last train | Pre-booked car | Waiting covered, no late-night queue |
| Cruise day to Civitavecchia | Pre-booked car or fixed taxi | €130 taxi from Fiumicino, or a fixed quote for a larger vehicle |
| Day trip to Tivoli | Pre-booked car | 6-hour package from US$470 per vehicle |
The table is the honest version. A Rome taxi at €55 is cheaper than a pre-booked business sedan at US$180, and for two travellers with ordinary luggage it is a good choice. Where the pre-booked car earns its price is in the situations the taxi rank is not built for: guaranteed vehicle size, child seats fitted before you land, a name board inside arrivals rather than a queue outside, one Sprinter for a whole group, and a price agreed in US$ weeks ahead. Our chauffeur vs taxi comparison covers the same trade-offs across our cities.
When to book a car instead
Families. An Elly8.net business SUV or van from Fiumicino costs from US$235 and carries six passengers and six bags, with child seats on request. The fixed taxi fare would be lower, but a standard taxi will not take that much luggage, and two taxis means splitting the family.
Groups. An Executive Sprinter from Fiumicino costs from US$470 and carries twelve passengers and twelve bags in one vehicle, per our fleet page. Divided across ten travellers, that is about US$47 each as simple arithmetic; the fare is per vehicle.
Late arrivals and early departures. After the last Leonardo Express, or for a 5 am run to Terminal 3, a booked car removes the uncertainty. Airport fares are the same in either direction.
Days with several stops. An hourly booking costs from US$85 an hour in a business sedan with a 3-hour minimum, and the car waits for you. The Vatican Museums with a timed entry, lunch in Trastevere and an afternoon at the Colosseum is a day for one car, not four taxis. See hourly chauffeur.
Cruise days. Civitavecchia is about 71 km (44 mi) from central Rome. Request a fixed fare through the web booker with your ship and boarding time; see cruise port transfers.
Business. A corporate roadshow day costs from US$765 in a business sedan, with the car held between meetings, and a corporate account adds monthly invoicing.
How booking works
Choose Fiumicino or Ciampino on the Rome car service page, add your flight number and hotel, pick the vehicle and press Reserve now to pay by card in US$; confirmation comes by email. The chauffeur tracks your flight and meets you in arrivals with a name board, and waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary. Fares include the chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet; tolls and parking are billed at cost. More on airport transfers.
