A Charleston taxi from the airport is metered at US$3.00 a mile for up to two passengers, with a US$17 minimum, which puts the ride from Charleston International (CHS) to the corner of King and Broad at about US$40, according to the airport's published sample fares. A shared Downtown Shuttle costs US$15 a person. Rideshare apps do not publish fares; they quote a price when you request and change with demand. For one or two travellers with light bags, any of these is usually cheaper than a pre-booked car.
A fixed Elly8.net car, from US$140 per vehicle all-in to the Historic Peninsula, wins for families, groups, golfers, wedding parties, cruise days and late arrivals, and on nights out with several stops. This guide sets the numbers side by side, covers getting around town after you arrive, and is honest about which option fits which trip. Rides in Charleston are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk.
Is a taxi or rideshare cheaper than a car service in Charleston?
For one or two people, yes. An airport taxi to King and Broad is about US$40 on the published sample fares, and the shared Downtown Shuttle is US$15 a person. A pre-booked Elly8.net car costs US$140 to US$365 per vehicle, all-in, and becomes competitive for families, groups and anyone needing child seats or a fixed time.
The rest of this guide explains how each option is priced, how long you are likely to wait, and the specific situations where a car booked in advance is the better choice.

How the CHS airport taxi is priced
The airport describes the taxi on its ground transportation page: go to the ground transportation booth, and a starter at the taxi line in the center median outside baggage claim quotes a rate based on your destination, with a US$17 minimum from CHS. The airport's taxi brochure, dated March 2024, sets out the rules behind that rate:
- a meter rate of US$3.00 per mile, which includes up to two passengers;
- a US$17 minimum, or the meter, whichever is greater;
- US$7 per additional passenger per trip;
- no other additional fees, and no charge at all if the driver fails to turn on the meter;
- Mastercard, American Express, Visa and Discover accepted, with no card handling fee.
Passengers travelling together to different destinations pay what the meter reads at the final stop and split it as they agree before setting off.
Sample taxi fares from CHS
These are from the airport's brochure of sample estimated metered fares.
| From CHS to | Miles | Sample metered fare, up to 2 passengers |
|---|---|---|
| Amtrak and Greyhound, North Charleston | 5.7 | US$17 |
| Daniel Island | 11.3 | US$34 |
| The Citadel | 11.5 | US$35 |
| Francis Marion Hotel | 12.0 | US$36 |
| Charleston Place | 12.4 | US$37 |
| South Carolina Aquarium | 12.4 | US$37 |
| Corner of King and Broad | 13.4 | US$40 |
| Patriots Point, Mount Pleasant | 14.5 | US$44 |
| Summerville city limits | 18.9 | US$57 |
| Isle of Palms | 19.9 | US$60 |
| Folly Beach | 20.3 | US$61 |
| Wild Dunes | 23.5 | US$71 |
| Kiawah Island gate | 29.0 | US$87 |
Add US$7 for each passenger beyond two. Four people to King and Broad would therefore pay about US$54, if they and their bags fit in one cab.
The shared Downtown Shuttle
The same brochure describes a Downtown Shuttle from CHS to destinations in downtown Charleston at US$15 per passenger, departing within fifteen minutes. It is a shared ride and may make several stops depending on how many passengers are on board. For a solo traveller, it is the cheapest door-to-door option to the peninsula after the bus. For two people it is about US$30, still below the taxi. From three people upward, the taxi's flat per-mile rate for the first two passengers starts to compare well.
Rideshare at CHS and around town
Uber, Lyft and other ride apps pick up at CHS in a covered shelter at Zones 1, 2 and 3, across both roadways and to the right of the last sidewalk, according to the airport. You request the ride once you have your bags and walk to the zone.
Rideshare companies do not publish fixed fares, so we do not quote one. The app shows a price when you request, based on distance, time and demand. At quiet times it can be close to the taxi; on a festival weekend, a wedding Friday or when several flights land together, it can rise. Around the peninsula, app pickups work best at a corner rather than mid-block on a narrow one-way street.
The bus and the free DASH shuttle
CARTA runs scheduled buses from a covered stop just outside baggage claim to Tanger Outlet Center and downtown Charleston, and lists Route 11, Dorchester Road and Airport, on its maps and schedules page. A fixed-route ride costs US$2.00, an express ride US$3.50 and a one-day pass US$7, according to CARTA's fares page.
Once you are on the peninsula, CARTA's DASH shuttle is free, on three routes serving the College of Charleston and the Aquarium, Meeting and King streets, and Lockwood and Calhoun, with stops at the Visitors Center, Four Corners of Law, Waterfront Park and City Market. For daytime sightseeing, DASH and your feet will cover most of the old city.
Getting around town after dark
The airport fares above are for trips from CHS. Around the city, taxis are metered too, but we could not find a published rate schedule for in-town trips on an official source, so ask the driver for an estimate before you set off and confirm card payment. App rides are the other on-demand choice, priced when you request.
A night out in Charleston often crosses water: dinner on King Street, then drinks on Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant across the Ravenel Bridge, then back to an inn south of Broad. That is three separate rides, each with its own wait and its own price, and late in the evening you may wait for the last one. A car on the evening out package, from US$475 in a Business Sedan or US$600 in a Business SUV for up to six, waits outside each stop instead. The chauffeur follows local rules on alcohol in vehicles, and the ride is never planned around drinking.
Wait times: what to expect
Nobody publishes guaranteed wait times, so here is what the airport's own information tells you:
- Taxi. Taxis are dispatched on demand from the line in the center median. On a quiet afternoon you are likely to leave quickly; when several flights land at once, there may be a line.
- Downtown Shuttle. The brochure says it departs within fifteen minutes, then makes its stops.
- Rideshare. The app shows the expected pickup time when you request. It depends on how many drivers are nearby.
- CARTA. The next scheduled bus; check the timetable before you fly.
- Pre-booked Elly8.net car. The chauffeur is already inside baggage claim with a name board when you arrive, with complimentary waiting after a tracked landing while you collect bags.
Side by side: CHS to the Historic Peninsula
| Option | Price | Wait | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CARTA bus | US$2.00 per person | Next scheduled bus | What you can carry | Solo traveller with time |
| Downtown Shuttle | US$15 per person, shared | Departs within 15 minutes, several stops | Shared space | Solo traveller or a couple |
| Airport taxi | About US$37 to US$40 for up to 2, plus US$7 per extra person | Taxi line on demand | Cab trunk | Couples, walk-up arrivals |
| Uber / Lyft | Set by the app on request | Shown in the app | Depends on car class | Off-peak, light bags |
| Elly8.net Business Sedan | US$140 per vehicle, all-in | Chauffeur waiting inside | 2 bags | Late arrivals, fixed budgets |
| Elly8.net Business SUV | US$185 per vehicle, all-in | Chauffeur waiting inside | 6 bags | Families, golfers, up to 6 |
| Elly8.net Executive Sprinter | US$365 per vehicle, all-in | Chauffeur waiting inside | 12 bags | Wedding parties, groups to 12 |
By party size: the fair comparison
Elly8.net prices are per vehicle. Dividing by the number of people is arithmetic for comparison only.
- One person. The shuttle at US$15, or the taxi at about US$40. A US$140 car only makes sense for a reason other than price, such as a late arrival or a business booking that needs a receipt in advance.
- Two people. The shuttle at US$30 or the taxi at about US$40.
- Four people with suitcases. The taxi at about US$54, if one cab takes everyone and the bags, or a Business SUV at US$185, about US$46 each as arithmetic, with six bags confirmed and child seats on request.
- Six golfers going to Kiawah. Two taxis to the Kiawah Island gate at about US$87 each before extra passengers, plus getting through the gate to the resort, or one Business SUV priced in the web booker to the door, with six bags.
- Ten wedding guests. Several taxis or shuttles, or one Executive Sprinter at US$365, about US$36.50 each as arithmetic, everyone arriving together.
When the taxi or rideshare is the right call
- One or two travellers with bags that fit in a cab.
- A daytime arrival with no fixed appointment.
- A hotel on the peninsula or in North Charleston, close to the published sample fares.
- No need for child seats.
In those cases, the published taxi rate or the shared shuttle is honest value, and we would not push a pre-booked car.
When to book a car instead
- Late arrivals. A chauffeur already waiting for your tracked flight takes the uncertainty out of the evening.
- Families. Child seats fitted before pickup, and an SUV for the stroller and bags.
- Golf and beach trips. Kiawah, Isle of Palms and Folly Beach with clubs, chairs and coolers.
- Groups and weddings. One Executive Sprinter for up to twelve.
- Cruise days. A boarding window, cruise luggage and the drive to the terminal at the Port of Charleston.
- Evenings with several stops. Dinner on King Street, a show and a late drink in Mount Pleasant is a car-waiting job, from US$475 on the evening out package.
- Business travel. A corporate account for fixed prices and monthly invoicing.

When you are a family needing child seats, a group or wedding party wanting one vehicle, golfers with clubs, cruise passengers with a boarding window, late arrivals, or anyone who needs a fixed price in advance. For one or two people with light bags in the daytime, the taxi or shuttle is usually better value.
