An Uber from Charlotte airport picks up on the upper Departures/Ticketing level, in the inner lanes at Zones 1 to 3, not at baggage claim, and the price is set by the app at the moment you request. A CLT taxi waits on the lower Arrivals level and charges a published US$32 flat rate to Uptown, plus a US$2.50 airport fee. A pre-booked Elly8.net car meets you inside baggage claim for a fixed US$120 in a business sedan.
So the cheapest way into Uptown for one or two people is often the taxi, and the airport bus is cheaper still. A private car earns its price in specific situations: late arrivals, families and groups with bags, tight schedules, destinations beyond the flat-rate zone, and corporate billing. This comparison uses the figures the airport itself publishes and says plainly which option to choose when.
Which is cheapest from CLT to Uptown Charlotte?
The CATS bus is cheapest at a local fare per person. The CLT taxi flat rate to Uptown within the I-277 loop is US$32 plus a US$2.50 airport fee. Uber and Lyft prices move with demand. An Elly8.net business sedan is US$120 fixed and all-in for up to three; an Executive Sprinter is US$315 for up to twelve.
The taxi figures come from the airport's taxi and taxi rates page, and the rideshare pickup rules from its ride app pickup page. App fares are not published in advance, so we describe how they behave rather than inventing a number.
| Option | Price CLT to Uptown | Where you board | Best for |

The taxi: Charlotte's strongest walk-up option
Charlotte is one of the few large US airports where the taxi fare to the centre is fixed and published. According to CLT:
- US$32 flat rate to Uptown, within the I-277 loop.
- US$16 flat rate for trips within a 3-mile radius of the airport, useful for airport hotels.
- A US$2.50 airport fee applies to all trips.
- Elsewhere the meter runs: US$3.50 initial charge, US$0.70 per fifth of a mile and US$0.70 per minute when stopped or in traffic.
Taxis wait on the Arrivals/Baggage Claim level at the outer curb in Zone 1. Six companies operate through the airport's taxi queue, all with GPS and card payment, and wheelchair-accessible taxis can be requested through the airport's Parking Dispatch Office. The airport says taxi service primarily operates daily from 5 a.m. to midnight, though cabs may be available at off-peak hours.
The honest verdict: for one or two travellers heading to an Uptown hotel between 5 a.m. and midnight, the taxi is very good value. At US$34.50 before any tip, it is less than a third of a chauffeured sedan.
Where the taxi is weaker: outside the I-277 loop the meter applies, so SouthPark, Ballantyne, Lake Norman and Concord are metered fares that grow with distance and traffic, at about US$3.50 a mile plus time stopped. Groups larger than a cab can carry need two cabs. And after midnight, availability is less certain.
Uber and Lyft: convenient, but not at baggage claim
App rides at CLT pick up on the upper level, at the inner lanes of the Departures/Ticketing level, in Zones 1 to 3. From baggage claim that means going back upstairs with your bags to meet a driver you match by plate number.
App prices are set when you request. They are usually reasonable at quiet times, and they rise with demand. CLT's demand peaks are predictable: the evening banks of connecting flights, Panthers and Charlotte FC game days at Bank of America Stadium, the Coca-Cola 600 weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway (listed for May 30, 2027) and the Duke's Mayo Bowl on December 26, 2026. On those days, waits lengthen and prices move.
Uber Black and similar premium tiers give you a better car with the same pickup zones and the same demand pricing. Our general comparisons go further: chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft and Uber Black vs a pre-booked chauffeur.
The CATS bus
The airport's ground transportation page lists a CATS Sprinter Service, the public bus that serves CLT, and CATS lists a local adult one-way bus fare of US$2.20. Check CATS for the current route, frequency and fare before you travel. For a solo traveller with a carry-on, landing at midday and staying near the route, it is the cheapest option by a wide margin. It is not designed for families with child seats, groups with luggage or anyone heading straight into a meeting.
Do not confuse it with a chartered Sprinter van; our Charlotte Sprinter van rental guide explains the difference.
A pre-booked private car
With an Elly8.net CLT airport car service, you book with the flight number. The chauffeur tracks the flight and waits inside the Arrivals/Baggage Claim level with a name board, with complimentary waiting after a tracked landing. There is no trip upstairs to the rideshare zone and no taxi queue. The price is fixed before you fly, for Uptown or any other address in the region, and it does not change on game days. Our step-by-step guide, Charlotte airport car service: what to expect, walks through every stage.
The trade-off is price. A business sedan at US$120 costs more than the taxi to Uptown. The gap narrows for groups and for addresses outside the loop, and disappears when the alternative is two cabs or a surging app ride.
Six arrivals and the right answer for each
One traveller, carry-on, landing at noon, hotel in Uptown. Take the taxi, or the bus if you are on the route. A chauffeur is a comfort here, not a necessity.
Two colleagues landing at 6 p.m. for a 7:30 p.m. dinner in Uptown. The taxi flat rate works. If the dinner is with a client and timing matters, a business sedan removes the taxi queue and the walk.
A family of five with two child seats and luggage. A business SUV at US$160 fixed, with child seats fitted before pickup. A single taxi rarely fits this load, and app cars arrive without seats.
An executive landing at 9:45 p.m. heading to Ballantyne. A pre-booked sedan. Ballantyne is outside the flat-rate zone, the evening bank keeps the curb busy, and the ride can go on a corporate account with monthly invoicing.
A team of ten for a SouthPark offsite. One Executive Sprinter, priced in the web booker for SouthPark; to Uptown it is US$315, about US$32 a person for ten. Three or four cabs would cost more and arrive separately.
A connection that collapses at 12:30 a.m. Message the Elly8.net desk and book a car to an airport hotel or Uptown. Taxi service is primarily 5 a.m. to midnight, and app availability is thin late at night.
A game-day arrival, three ways
To see how the options play out, take one realistic case: four friends landing at CLT at 5 p.m. on a Sunday with a Panthers game at Bank of America Stadium that evening, staying at an Uptown hotel, each with a suitcase.
By taxi. They walk to the Arrivals level outer curb in Zone 1 and join the queue. Four people and four suitcases may fit one cab; if not, they need two. At the flat rate, one cab is US$34.50 including the airport fee, two cabs US$69, plus tips. The drive into Uptown is slower than usual as game traffic builds, but the flat rate does not change with it. On balance, a good-value option if the bags fit and the queue is short.
By app. They carry their bags upstairs to the rideshare zones on the Departures/Ticketing level and request a ride. On a game afternoon the app price is likely to be higher than usual and the wait longer, and a larger vehicle class costs more again. The outcome is uncertain until the moment they press the button.
By pre-booked car. A business SUV is waiting in baggage claim with a name board, the chauffeur has tracked the flight, and the four suitcases go in the back. The fare is US$160, fixed, or US$40 each. The chauffeur knows where drop-off is allowed near the hotel on a game day.
None of these is wrong. The taxi is cheapest if everything goes to plan; the pre-booked SUV removes the parts that might not.
Cost per person, side by side
| Group | Taxi to Uptown (incl. airport fee) | Elly8.net to Uptown | Elly8.net per person |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 traveller | US$34.50, one cab | US$120 business sedan | US$120 |
| 3 travellers | US$34.50, one cab if bags fit | US$120 business sedan | US$40 |
| 5 travellers with bags | US$69, likely two cabs | US$160 business SUV | US$32 |
| 10 travellers with bags | about US$103.50 to US$138, three or four cabs | US$315 Executive Sprinter | US$31.50 |
Taxi figures exclude any tip, which is customary. Elly8.net prices include a standard gratuity, taxes and meet and greet; tolls and parking are billed at cost. For bigger groups the fixed per-vehicle price comes close to the taxi on a per-head basis, with everyone arriving together.
The departure
Elly8.net fares are the same fixed price in either direction, so Uptown to CLT is US$120 in a business sedan and US$315 in the Sprinter, and a round trip is cheaper, from US$230. For departures from SouthPark, Ballantyne or Lake Norman, the web booker returns a fixed price for the address. The CLT taxi page publishes rates for trips from the airport, so for the return leg, ask the cab for the fare before you go.
Verdict
Book the taxi when you are one or two people going to Uptown between 5 a.m. and midnight and do not mind the queue. Take the bus when you are alone, light and not in a hurry. Use an app at quiet times when you are happy to go upstairs to the rideshare zones. Pre-book a private car when you land late, travel with a family or a team, need child seats, are going beyond Uptown, have a meeting soon after landing, need corporate billing, or arrive on a game or race weekend. The Charlotte car service page has every price, and nearby Raleigh and Atlanta work the same way.
Frequently asked questions
Where do you get an Uber at Charlotte airport?
On the upper Departures/Ticketing level, in the inner lanes at Zones 1 to 3, according to CLT. From baggage claim, go back up to the departures level with your bags and match the driver by plate. Taxis are on the lower Arrivals level outer curb, Zone 1.
How much is a taxi from CLT to Uptown?
CLT publishes a US$32 flat rate to Uptown within the I-277 loop, plus a US$2.50 airport fee that applies to all trips. Trips within 3 miles of the airport are a US$16 flat rate. Other destinations are metered at US$3.50 initially plus US$0.70 per fifth of a mile.
Is Uber cheaper than a taxi from Charlotte airport?
Sometimes, at quiet times. App prices are set when you request and rise with demand, especially at evening connection banks and on game and race days. The taxi flat rate to Uptown does not move with demand, which makes it the more predictable walk-up option.
When is a private car worth it from CLT?
For late arrivals, families with child seats, groups with luggage, destinations outside the Uptown flat-rate zone, tight schedules and corporate billing. An Elly8.net business sedan is US$120 fixed to Uptown and an Executive Sprinter US$315 for up to twelve, with meet and greet inside baggage claim.
Are CLT taxis available all night?
The airport says taxi service primarily operates daily from 5 a.m. to midnight, though cabs may be available off-peak. If you are landing late, pre-booking is safer: an Elly8.net chauffeur tracks the flight and waits inside baggage claim whatever time it lands.
Do taxis at CLT take credit cards?
Yes. The airport says all major credit cards are accepted, including American Express, Discover, Mastercard and Visa, and every approved taxi carries a decal on the door. Wheelchair-accessible taxis can be requested through the airport's Parking Dispatch Office.
