The cars in Uber Black are late-model premium sedans and SUVs approved by Uber city by city. Uber publishes an eligible-vehicle list for each market, and its own page explains that the year shown for each model is the oldest allowed, that the cutoff generally moves forward by one year every year, and that eligibility for Uber Black also depends on the driver's rating and on factors such as legroom and exterior and interior colour.
What you cannot choose in the app is the specific car. You choose the tier, and the app sends whichever eligible car is nearest. A pre-booked chauffeur works the other way round: you choose the vehicle class, its passenger and bag capacity and the price before the trip, and that is what arrives. Neither approach is always better. This guide shows where each one wins.
Which cars are in Uber Black?
Uber Black uses premium sedans and SUVs from an eligible-vehicle list that Uber sets for each city. The listed year for each model is the oldest allowed and generally rises by one year annually. Eligibility also depends on driver rating, legroom and colour, and the cars you see vary by city and by who is nearby when you request.
Uber's eligible vehicles page is the official source, and it is worth reading before you rely on the app for a specific need. The list is per city, it changes over time, and it notes that ride option availability varies by city. In other words, the brand promise is consistent but the car is not: two Uber Black rides in the same week can arrive in different makes, sizes and colours.
For most short city rides, that does not matter. It starts to matter when you have luggage, a group, a child seat, or a client who expects a particular standard.
What a pre-booked car commits to
When you book through Elly8.net, you choose a vehicle class with stated capacities, from the fleet page:
| Elly8.net class | Typical vehicles | Passengers | Bags |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business Sedan | E-Class, CT6, Continental or similar | 3 | 2 |
| First Class Sedan | Mercedes-Benz S-Class or similar | 3 | 2 |
| Business SUV / Van | Suburban, Yukon XL or V-Class | 6 | 6 |
| First Class SUV | Escalade, Navigator or similar | 6 | 6 |
| Executive Sprinter | Mercedes-Benz Sprinter executive | 12 | 12 |
| Electric Sedan | Zero-emission business sedan | 3 | 2 |
Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer, and seven for Rolls-Royce, Maybach and Bentley. The words "or similar" matter: the exact model depends on the partner in each city, but the class, the passenger count and the bag count are what you booked. That is the core difference from an app tier. You are not hoping the nearest car has a large boot; you booked one that does.
Model year, colour and legroom: how the two standards compare
Both systems set a floor for vehicle age, and they set it in different ways. Uber's eligible-vehicle list names the oldest model year allowed for each model in each city, and Uber says that cutoff generally moves forward by one year every year. Elly8.net's partner rule is a rolling window: four model years or newer for sedans, SUVs and Sprinters, and seven model years or newer for Rolls-Royce, Maybach and Bentley.
Uber also says Uber Black eligibility depends on factors such as legroom and exterior and interior colour, along with the driver's rating. That is why the cars that arrive tend to look alike, even when the make changes. On a booking, the comparable promise is the class: a Business Sedan is an E-Class, CT6, Continental or similar, a First Class Sedan is an S-Class or similar, and a First Class SUV is an Escalade, Navigator or similar. If one of those matters to you, for a client pickup or a photograph, say so at booking and the desk confirms what the partner in that city can send.
The practical difference is not the standard but the certainty, and the certainty is what you are paying for when a client, a family or a timetable is waiting at the other end. Both aim for a late-model premium vehicle. Only one tells you, days in advance, how many passengers and bags it will take.
Luggage: the honest reality
Luggage is where most app rides and most bookings go wrong, so it is worth being precise.
A premium sedan, whether it arrives through an app or a booking, is built for passengers first. Elly8.net books its sedans for two bags, which is realistic for two large suitcases, or for carry-ons and a couple of smaller bags. Three travellers with three full-size cases and three carry-ons will not fit in a sedan boot comfortably, whatever the badge on the bonnet.
The fix is to book by bags, not by people:
- Up to 2 bags: a Business or First Class Sedan.
- 3 to 6 bags: a Business SUV or First Class SUV, which also takes up to six passengers.
- 7 to 12 bags, or golf and ski gear for a group: an Executive Sprinter.
With an app, you can request an SUV tier for more space, but the specific vehicle and its boot still depend on who accepts. With a booking, the bag count is part of what you paid for.
Fares side by side, from real price lists
Uber does not publish a fixed fare for these trips; it shows a price when you request, and its surge pricing page explains that prices rise when demand outstrips the drivers available. So the fair comparison is not one number against another. It is a fixed number against a number that depends on the minute you open the app.
These are published Elly8.net fares, fixed and all-in per vehicle, the same in either direction:
| Route | Business Sedan | Business SUV | Executive Sprinter | Clear-road drive |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| JFK to Midtown Manhattan | US$210 | US$275 | US$550 | about 18 mi (29 km), 29 min |
| LaGuardia to Midtown Manhattan | US$145 | US$190 | US$380 | about 9 mi (14 km), 17 min |
| LAX to Beverly Hills | US$170 | US$225 | US$445 | about 12 mi (20 km), 22 min |
| O'Hare to the Loop | US$215 | US$280 | US$560 | about 22 mi (35 km), 56 min |
| Harry Reid (LAS) to the Strip | US$125 | US$165 | US$325 | about 9 mi (14 km), 39 min |
The fixed fare includes the chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes, a standard gratuity and meet and greet inside arrivals. Tolls and parking are billed at cost. With an app ride, the tip is usually added on top in the app, so add it before you compare. The full prices are on the New York, Los Angeles and Chicago city pages.
Travel time and the airport pickup
The drive itself takes the same time in either car; both sit in the same traffic. The time difference is at the start of the trip.
With an app, you land, walk to the app pickup area, request, and wait for a driver to arrive. At some airports, the app pickup point is a walk or a shuttle ride from the terminal. Los Angeles International is the clearest example: app rides and taxis have been collected from a dedicated lot outside the terminal loop while Los Angeles World Airports rebuilds its ground access, and the rules change as new projects open.
With a booking, the chauffeur tracks the flight and waits inside arrivals with a name board, with complimentary waiting after a tracked landing. If the flight is two hours late, nothing needs rebooking. On a quiet afternoon the app may be just as quick. After a late arrival, in bad weather, or when several long-haul flights land together, the booked car usually wins by a wide margin.
When Uber Black is the smarter call
Being fair about it:
- Short hops in the city. A ten-minute ride from a hotel to a restaurant on a normal evening is exactly what the app does well.
- Unplanned trips. If you did not know you needed a car until now, there is nothing to pre-book.
- Light travellers at quiet times. One person with a carry-on, midday, in a city where app supply is good.
- Flexible timing. If leaving ten minutes later costs you nothing, a surge can simply be waited out.
A taxi at a published flat fare, or an airport train, can be the right answer too, for one person with a light bag going to a well-served station.
When a pre-booked car wins
- Late or international arrivals. The car is there whatever time you land.
- Groups and heavy bags. Six people with six bags in one Business SUV, or twelve with twelve bags in a Sprinter, booked as one vehicle.
- Child seats. Requested at booking and fitted before pickup.
- Meetings and tight schedules. Hourly bookings keep the same car waiting between stops, with a 3-hour minimum.
- Event nights. When a stadium or arena empties, app prices and waits climb together; a booked car is already assigned. See limo to concert for how pickups work after a show.
- Corporate billing. A corporate account gives fixed fares and monthly invoicing across every city.
- A fixed budget. The number you see is the number you pay for the booked trip.

Who is driving
App drivers in premium tiers are licensed where the city requires it, and the rules depend on the city. In New York City, for example, for-hire services are licensed by the Taxi and Limousine Commission, and its passenger FAQ points riders to a Find-a-Ride list of licensed for-hire services. If you want to understand the licensing behind the word chauffeur, our guide to what a chauffeur is walks through New York, Toronto and Italy.
On Elly8.net bookings, Toronto and the GTA run on the Elly8 fleet and chauffeurs. In every other city, rides are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Elly8.net is a member of LimousineWorldwide.Directory, LimousineAssociation.International, HotelsWorldwide.Directory and VacationsWorldwide.Directory.
Outside North America
The premium app tier behaves differently abroad. In Italy, for example, app rides connect you with licensed taxis or with licensed car-hire-with-driver vehicles rather than a separate class of private drivers, and the low-cost tiers travellers use at home may not appear at all. Our guide to Uber in Italy vs taxi vs private car explains what to expect city by city.
Three trips, three choices
A solo business traveller, LaGuardia to Midtown, 2 p.m., one carry-on. The app or a taxi is reasonable. The pre-booked Business Sedan at US$145 buys a meeting inside arrivals and a fixed price; whether that is worth it depends on how tight the afternoon is.
A family of four, LAX to Beverly Hills, 11 p.m., four large cases and a toddler. Book the Business SUV at US$225, with the child seat requested at booking. The question is not price but whether the car fits and is waiting.
A team of nine, O'Hare to the Loop, with sample cases. One Executive Sprinter at US$560 carries all nine and their bags. The alternative is three separate app requests and three different arrival times at the office.
In each case the useful question is not which option is better in general, but what the cost of getting it wrong would be on that particular trip. When it is low, use the app. When it is high, book.
How to book a fixed-price car
- Enter the pickup and drop-off in the web booker, with the flight number for an airport pickup.
- Choose the class by bags first, then passengers.
- Reserve. The price is fixed when you confirm, and the confirmation arrives by email.
For every city's fixed prices, see the packages page, or start from airport transfers.
Frequently asked questions
What cars qualify for Uber Black?
Uber sets an eligible-vehicle list for each city, covering premium sedans and SUVs with a minimum model year that generally rises by one each year. Eligibility also depends on driver rating, legroom and colour. Check Uber's eligible vehicles page for your city, because the list varies by market.
Can I choose the car model in Uber Black?
You choose the tier, not the car. The app assigns an eligible vehicle from the drivers nearby. With an Elly8.net booking, you choose the class, such as a Business SUV for six passengers and six bags, and that class is what arrives. Exact models vary by partner city.
How much luggage fits in a premium sedan?
Elly8.net books its sedans for two bags, which suits two large suitcases or a mix of carry-ons and small bags. For three to six bags, book a Business SUV or First Class SUV; for up to twelve, an Executive Sprinter. Booking by bags first avoids repacking at the kerb.
Is a pre-booked car more expensive than Uber Black?
Sometimes, sometimes not. Uber Black's price depends on demand at the moment you request. A pre-booked fare is fixed in advance and already includes a standard gratuity and meet and greet. Off-peak, the app may be cheaper; at peaks and late at night, the fixed fare often compares well.
Does a pre-booked chauffeur wait if my flight is late?
Yes. The chauffeur tracks your flight and adjusts the pickup to the actual landing, with complimentary waiting after a tracked landing. You do not need to rebook or call if the flight is delayed, or lands early; the pickup follows the tracked arrival.
What is the cancellation policy?
Free more than 72 hours before pickup; 10% at 72 hours or less; 50% at 48 hours or less; 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show. Refunds go to the original card, and the same terms apply in every city.
