A chauffeur is a professional driver who is hired in advance to drive passengers in a vehicle that is not a taxi: for a transfer from A to B, or by the hour, waiting between stops. The difference from a taxi or an app ride is not only the car. It is that the trip is planned before it starts, the driver works to your schedule rather than to the next fare, and the price is agreed in advance.
In most of North America and Europe, chauffeurs are licensed by a city, state, province or national authority, and the vehicles they drive are registered and insured for carrying paying passengers. When you book through Elly8.net, the chauffeur meets you at the arrivals hall with your name, takes your luggage, drives a planned route and charges a fixed, all-in price per vehicle that you saw before you paid.
What does a chauffeur actually do?
A chauffeur drives you safely and on time in a pre-booked vehicle, and handles everything around the drive: tracking your flight, meeting you inside arrivals with a name board, loading luggage, fitting requested child seats, planning the route for the hour of day and waiting between stops on hourly bookings. You agree the vehicle and price before the trip.
That list is the job description in short. In practice, the best chauffeurs are the ones you barely notice: the car is in the right place before you arrive, the route avoids the jam you did not know about, and the door is open when you walk out of the meeting.
Chauffeur, driver, taxi or rideshare: what is the difference?
The words are used loosely, so it helps to separate the four ways of getting a car with someone else at the wheel.
| Chauffeur (pre-booked) | Taxi | Rideshare app | Private driver hired directly | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| How you get it | Booked ahead for a set time | Hailed, from a rank or by phone | Requested in an app on demand | Arranged with the individual |
| Price | Agreed before the trip | Meter or a published flat fare | Set by the app at request time, can surge | Negotiated |
| Vehicle | Chosen class: sedan, SUV, Sprinter | Whatever taxi comes | The app tier you pick, car varies | Whatever they own |
| Airport | Meets you inside arrivals | Taxi rank | App pickup zone | Varies |
| Waits between stops | Yes, on hourly bookings | Meter runs | New request each leg | Varies |
A taxi is licensed to pick up street hails and to wait at ranks, and in many cities it charges a regulated meter or a flat fare set by the city. A rideshare driver is matched to you by an app at the moment you request, and the fare reflects demand at that minute. A chauffeur works on bookings made in advance: the trip, the vehicle and the price are fixed before the car moves. The phrase private driver is used for all sorts of arrangements, from a licensed chauffeur hired for a day to a friend of a friend with a car, which is why licensing matters.
None of these is always the right choice. A taxi at a published flat fare is honest value for one person with a light bag. An app is convenient for a short hop off-peak. A chauffeur earns the booking when the arrival cannot go wrong, when there are bags, children or several stops, when the budget must be fixed, or when someone else is paying and needs an invoice. Our chauffeur vs taxi and chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft comparisons go through those trade-offs in detail, and the guide to cars in Uber Black vs a pre-booked car looks at the premium app tier specifically.
How chauffeurs are licensed
There is no single chauffeur licence that works everywhere. Each jurisdiction sets its own rules, and three examples show the range.
New York City. Drivers of for-hire vehicles in New York City are licensed by the Taxi and Limousine Commission. The TLC driver licence page sets a minimum age of 19 and requires a New York State commercial licence or a for-hire chauffeur's licence, fingerprinting, a drug test, a new-driver course, wheelchair-accessible vehicle and passenger assistance training, a defensive driving course and a TLC exam. The licence lasts three years.
Toronto. The City of Toronto's vehicle-for-hire page states that you need a licence from the City if you own or drive taxicabs, limousines or private transportation company vehicles, under the Vehicles-for-Hire Bylaw.
Italy. Italian national law separates the taxi from noleggio con conducente, car hire with driver, usually shortened to NCC. Both categories are set out in Law 21 of 1992. A chauffeur in Rome, Milan or Florence is an NCC driver; a taxi is a separate, city-licensed service.
The point for a first-time booker is simple: ask whether the driver and the vehicle are licensed for paid passenger transport where you are travelling, and whether the vehicle is commercially insured. On Elly8.net bookings the answer is fixed. Toronto and the GTA run on the Elly8 fleet and chauffeurs. In every other city, rides are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk.
Local know-how is the real product
What separates a chauffeur from a driver with a nice car is knowledge of the city at the hour you are travelling. A few examples from cities we book every day:
New York. JFK is about 18 miles (29 km) from Midtown Manhattan and about 29 minutes on a clear road, but a clear road is rare in the afternoon. LaGuardia is closer, about 9 miles (14 km). A chauffeur who knows which crossing is moving at 5 p.m. saves more time than any car. A JFK car service to Midtown costs US$210 in a Business Sedan and US$275 in a Business SUV; from LaGuardia, from US$145.
Chicago. O'Hare is about 22 miles (35 km) from the Loop and the Magnificent Mile, roughly 56 minutes on a clear road; Midway is about 13 miles (21 km), around 28 minutes. Which airport you fly into changes the morning more than which car you book. The Chicago city page lists fixed fares from both, from US$160 at Midway and US$215 at O'Hare in a Business Sedan.
Toronto. Pearson is about 19 miles (31 km) from downtown and around 31 minutes on a clear road; Billy Bishop, on the island, is about 2 miles (3 km). A Toronto chauffeur from Pearson to downtown costs US$155 in a Business Sedan.
Las Vegas. Harry Reid International is only about 9 miles (14 km) from the Strip, yet the clear-road time is about 39 minutes, because the Strip itself is slow. The fare to the Strip is US$125 in a Business Sedan.
These clear-road times are the floor. Peak traffic, weather, events and road works add to them, which is exactly what the chauffeur plans around.
The same knowledge applies at the destination. A chauffeur knows which hotels have a covered driveway and which ones put cars on a busy street, which office towers let vehicles wait at the loading bay, which venues close their kerbs on event nights, and where to stand so a passenger leaving a crowded building can find the car in under a minute. None of that appears on a map, and it is the reason a booked chauffeur often beats a faster car with a driver who has never been to the address.
Which vehicle fits which trip
Chauffeurs drive more than black sedans. These are the classes Elly8.net books, with capacities from the fleet page:
| Class | Typical vehicle | Passengers | Bags | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Business Sedan | E-Class, CT6, Continental or similar | 3 | 2 | One or two travellers, airport runs, meetings |
| First Class Sedan | Mercedes-Benz S-Class or similar | 3 | 2 | Executives, VIP guests, special evenings |
| Business SUV / Van | Suburban, Yukon XL or V-Class | 6 | 6 | Families, small teams, golf bags, ski gear |
| First Class SUV | Escalade, Navigator or similar | 6 | 6 | Executives with luggage, small groups |
| Executive Sprinter | Mercedes-Benz Sprinter executive | 12 | 12 | Groups, wedding guests, conference shuttles |
Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer, seven for Rolls-Royce, Maybach and Bentley. For weddings and occasions, Elly8.net also books stretch limousines, party buses and a Rolls-Royce; our guide to a Rolls Royce with chauffeur explains that booking.
A chauffeur also knows when not to rely on the car. In Venice, cars stop at Piazzale Roma and the last stretch is by water; in Manhattan at rush hour, a short walk to a quieter street can beat waiting at a blocked kerb. Good local advice sometimes means telling a passenger the car is not the best tool for part of the trip.
Transfer or by the hour?
The two ways to book a chauffeur suit different days.
A transfer is a single trip at a fixed price, such as an airport to a hotel. It is the right booking for arrivals and departures. Every airport fare on Elly8.net is the same fixed price in either direction, and our airport transfers page explains how meeting works.
By the hour keeps the car and chauffeur with you, waiting between stops. It suits a day of meetings, a shopping trip, a dinner with a show afterwards, or a day trip. The Elly8.net price list has a 3-hour minimum, and you can choose up to 12 hours at checkout. In New York and Los Angeles, a Business Sedan by the hour costs US$105; in Las Vegas, US$95. Packages for 4, 5, 8 and 10 hours are listed on each city page. See hourly chauffeur for the detail.
A simple rule: if you have more than two stops in an afternoon, or if anyone has to wait outside a building for a car, book by the hour. If the day is one airport run in the morning and another in the evening, two transfers are usually cheaper than a full day.
What happens on the day
- Before pickup. For airport pickups, the chauffeur tracks your flight. If it lands early or late, the pickup moves with it, with complimentary waiting after a tracked landing.
- The meeting. At airports, the chauffeur waits inside arrivals with a name board. Our meet and greet page explains where, airport by airport. At hotels and homes, the car is at the door at the booked time.
- The ride. Luggage is loaded for you; requested child seats are already fitted. The route is planned for the time of day.
- The end. No meter, no payment at the door. The fixed price was charged when you booked, with tolls, parking and extra waiting billed at cost.
Because a standard gratuity is in every Elly8.net price, there is nothing to calculate at the end of the ride. Our guide on how much to tip a limo driver explains when a tip is and is not expected elsewhere.
Is a chauffeur worth it?
Sometimes not, and it is better to say so. One traveller with a carry-on, landing at noon and staying near a train station, will usually do well on public transport or a taxi at a published fare. A chauffeur is worth it when the cost of something going wrong is high: a late-night arrival with children, a client waiting at the other end, four people with six suitcases, a wedding, an event night when every app is surging, or a company that needs one invoice for many rides. For companies, a corporate account adds monthly invoicing.
Think of it as paying for certainty rather than for luxury. The car is comfortable, but the real value is knowing, days before the trip, exactly who will be waiting, in what vehicle, at what price, and that the plan survives a delayed flight or a late meeting.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a chauffeur and a driver?
A chauffeur is a professional driver hired in advance for a planned trip or a block of hours, in a vehicle licensed and insured for paying passengers. Driver is a broader word. In practice, the difference is the booking: the vehicle, the time and the price are agreed before the trip starts.
Is a chauffeur more expensive than a taxi?
Often a little, sometimes not. A taxi at a published airport flat fare can be cheaper for one or two people. A chauffeur's fixed price includes meet and greet, luggage help, the vehicle class you chose and a standard gratuity, and it does not rise with traffic or demand. For groups, one SUV can cost less than two taxis.
Do I need to tip a chauffeur?
Not on an Elly8.net booking. Every price includes a standard gratuity, along with the chauffeur, vehicle and taxes. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the booked time are billed at cost. Anything extra is at your discretion and never expected, whether the trip is a short airport run or a full day.
Where does the chauffeur meet me at the airport?
Inside arrivals with a name board, after you clear baggage claim or customs. The chauffeur tracks your flight, so the meeting moves if you land early or late, with complimentary waiting after a tracked landing. The 24/7 desk can help if anything changes on the day.
Can a chauffeur provide child seats?
Yes, on request. Tell the desk the number of children and their ages when you book, and the seats are fitted before pickup. Requesting them at booking matters, because the vehicle is prepared in advance and a seat cannot be added at the kerb.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancelling more than 72 hours before pickup is free. At 72 hours or less the charge is 10%, at 48 hours or less 50%, and at 24 hours or less, or a no-show, 100%. Refunds go to the original card.
