How much to tip a limo driver depends first on one question: is gratuity already in the price? On many limousine and car service quotes in North America, it is, either as a line item or built into the total. On every Elly8.net booking, a standard gratuity is included in the fixed, all-in price per vehicle, so there is nothing to add at the end of the ride. Anything extra is entirely your choice and never expected.
Where gratuity is not included, the common reference point in the United States is the one etiquette guides use for taxis: the Emily Post Institute's tipping guide gives 15 to 20 percent of the fare for a taxi driver, with a small extra for each bag carried. Many travellers use the same range for a chauffeur when the quote says gratuity is not included. Read on for how to tell which kind of quote you have, and what changes on a wedding, a party bus or a trip abroad.
Is gratuity included in a limo price?
Often, yes, but not always. Some operators build gratuity into the total, others add it as a percentage line, and a few leave it to you. Check the quote for a line marked gratuity, service or driver tip. Every Elly8.net price already includes a standard gratuity, along with the chauffeur, the vehicle and taxes, so no tip is expected.
The confusion comes from the fact that the word "price" means different things on different quotes. One operator's US$500 may already include the chauffeur's gratuity; another's US$500 may have 20 percent to add, plus fuel and admin fees. The only reliable comparison is the final total for the same vehicle, the same hours and the same route.
How to read the gratuity line on any quote
Look for these four things:
- A line called gratuity, service charge, driver gratuity or chauffeur fee. If it is there, that is the tip. Adding another one on the day is optional, not expected.
- The base it is calculated on. A percentage of the base rate is one thing; a percentage of the total including fuel, fees and tolls is another. Ask.
- Words such as all-inclusive or all-in. These should mean gratuity is included, but check the small print for what all-in covers.
- A note such as gratuity not included. That is your signal that the tip is up to you.
A worked example shows why it matters. Imagine two hypothetical quotes for the same 5-hour evening. Quote A says US$900, gratuity included. Quote B says US$780 plus 20 percent gratuity and a 5 percent fuel and admin fee. Quote B looks cheaper, but 20 percent of US$780 is US$156 and 5 percent is US$39, for a total of US$975. Quote A is the lower price. The figures are invented for the arithmetic; the method is what counts.
What Elly8.net includes
Every Elly8.net price includes the chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes, a standard gratuity and airport meet and greet. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost. That is true for every vehicle class and every city.
Here is what that looks like on real, published fares, fixed per vehicle and the same in either direction for airport transfers:
| Booking | Business Sedan | Business SUV | Executive Sprinter | Gratuity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| JFK to Midtown Manhattan | US$210 | US$275 | US$550 | Included |
| Pearson (YYZ) to downtown Toronto | US$155 | US$205 | US$405 | Included |
| Fiumicino (FCO) to Rome's historic centre | US$180 | US$235 | US$470 | Included |
| By the hour in Las Vegas (3-hour minimum) | US$95 | US$120 | US$190 | Included |
| 5-hour evening in New York | US$525 | US$675 | US$1,050 | Included |
The full price lists are on the New York prices panel and the Toronto and Rome city pages, and every city's packages are on the packages page.
When gratuity is not included: what is customary
If you book with an operator whose quote says gratuity is not included, the taxi reference point is a sensible place to start. The Emily Post guide gives 15 to 20 percent of the fare for a taxi driver, minimally US$1, plus US$2 for the first bag carried and US$1 for each additional bag. Many travellers apply the same range to a chauffeur, rounding up for heavy luggage or a long wait.
A few situations deserve thought:
- A short airport transfer with a lot of luggage. The work is in the bags, not the miles. Rounding up is common.
- A long hourly booking. Percentages on long bookings add up quickly. Check whether gratuity is already in the hourly rate before you calculate anything.
- A delayed flight with a long wait. If the operator charges waiting time, the chauffeur's time is already being paid for in that line.
- Two vehicles. If your group uses two cars, each chauffeur is a separate booking on most quotes. Decide in advance how you will handle each.
How to pay a discretionary extra varies. In a New York City taxi, the TLC's passenger FAQ explains that card-paying passengers enter the tip on the back-seat touch screen. Chauffeured cars rarely have that screen, so cash or adding it when you pay the operator are the usual routes.
Weddings, proms and party buses
Event bookings are where gratuity questions come up most, because the bookings are bigger and more people are involved.
Weddings. The wedding car usually waits through the ceremony and photographs, and the chauffeur may handle the bride's dress, umbrellas and timings. On a quote where gratuity is not included, couples often give the chauffeur an envelope through the planner at the end of the day. On an Elly8.net booking, the standard gratuity is already in the price, so the envelope is unnecessary; if you still want to thank the chauffeur, it is your choice. Our guide to the Rolls Royce car for a wedding covers how to plan the day and the contract.
Proms. Parents usually pay the booking and the gratuity together. Check the quote; if gratuity is included, the students do not need to bring cash for the chauffeur.
Party buses. Party bus quotes are where gratuity lines are most often added as a percentage at the end. Our guide to how much a party bus costs includes a checklist for comparing quotes, gratuity line included. If your group is splitting the cost, divide the total including gratuity, so nobody is surprised.
Day trips, roadshows and multi-day trips
Long bookings are where an included gratuity saves the most thought. A full day in a car, a corporate roadshow or a week with the same chauffeur in a foreign city can raise the question every evening: should we be tipping today, or at the end? With gratuity built into each booking, the answer is neither, unless you want to.
On Elly8.net, the long formats are priced as packages. The full-day chauffeur is 8 hours at 8 percent below the hourly rate; the corporate roadshow day is 10 hours at 10 percent below; and every city with a signature day trip lists it with a fixed price. In New York, the full-day chauffeur costs from US$775 in a Business Sedan to US$1,550 in an Executive Sprinter; in Las Vegas, from US$700 to US$1,400. Each of those figures already contains a standard gratuity. If you keep the same chauffeur for several days and want to say thank you at the end of the trip, that is a personal gesture, not a missing payment.
For a multi-city itinerary, the logic is the same in every city: the price you see includes the gratuity, wherever the car is. That consistency is useful when one booking is in Chicago, the next in Toronto and the last in Rome, each with its own local customs.
If something went wrong
Gratuity is a thank-you for good service, and an included gratuity does not mean a problem should go unmentioned. If a pickup was late, the car was not the class you booked, or something else fell short, tell the 24/7 desk rather than settling it at the kerb. The desk can look at the booking, the flight tracking and the partner's records, and deal with it properly. Withholding cash from a chauffeur at the door does not fix the cause, and on a booking where gratuity is included it does not change what was charged.
The same applies in reverse. If the chauffeur went well beyond the job, telling the desk is a compliment that reaches the partner who employs them.
Tipping abroad
Gratuity customs are local, and North American habits do not travel everywhere.
Italy. The country's official tourism site, Italia.it, says tipping in Italy is not compulsory and there are no established rules, and that it is customary to leave an amount close to 10 percent of the bill when the customer is satisfied. Our guide to Uber in Italy vs taxi vs private car covers the rest of what changes on an Italian trip.
Elsewhere in Europe. Customs vary by country, and a standard gratuity on an Elly8.net booking means you do not have to work out the local custom for your chauffeur. That is one less calculation at the end of a long flight.
Canada. Habits are close to those in the United States. In Toronto, Elly8.net bookings run on the Elly8 fleet and chauffeurs, and the standard gratuity is in the price.
What is not included, and should not be confused with a tip
Three charges on a chauffeur invoice are sometimes mistaken for gratuity. On Elly8.net bookings, each is billed at cost:
- Tolls. Bridge, tunnel and highway tolls on your route.
- Parking. Airport short-term parking or venue lots, where the chauffeur must park to meet you or wait.
- Waiting beyond the included time. On an airport pickup, waiting is complimentary after a tracked landing; on other bookings, time beyond the booked hours is billed at cost.
None of these is a tip, and paying them is not tipping the chauffeur. If you are comparing quotes, check whether another operator includes them, estimates them or adds them later.
Corporate travel and gratuity
Many travel managers prefer gratuity included, because it removes a cash expense and a receipt from every trip. On a corporate account, Elly8.net bookings arrive on a monthly invoice with gratuity already in each fare, which keeps expense reports clean. Travel managers who book through several suppliers should ask each one whether its rates include gratuity, and on what base, before comparing rate cards. The corporate car service page explains how accounts work.
Who drives an Elly8.net car
Toronto and the GTA run on the Elly8 fleet and chauffeurs. In every other city, rides are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Elly8.net is a member of LimousineWorldwide.Directory, LimousineAssociation.International, HotelsWorldwide.Directory and VacationsWorldwide.Directory.
A quick checklist before you pay
- Is gratuity in the total, added as a percentage, or left to you?
- If it is a percentage, of what base?
- Are taxes, fuel and admin fees in the total?
- How are tolls, parking and waiting billed?
- Is the price per vehicle or per person?
- What is the cancellation policy, and is gratuity refunded with the fare if you cancel?
On an Elly8.net booking: gratuity is in the price; taxes are in the price; tolls, parking and extra waiting are at cost; the price is per vehicle; and cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show, refunded to the original card. The cancellation policy and the FAQ have the full text.

Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip a limo driver?
First check whether gratuity is already in the price; on many quotes, and on every Elly8.net booking, it is. Where it is not included, the common US reference is the taxi guideline of 15 to 20 percent of the fare, with a little extra for heavy luggage. Any amount beyond an included gratuity is your choice.
Is the tip included in an Elly8.net price?
Yes. Every Elly8.net price includes a standard gratuity, along with the chauffeur, the vehicle and taxes. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost. You do not need to tip at the end of the ride, and nothing extra is expected.
Do you tip a chauffeur for an airport transfer?
Only if gratuity is not already included. On an Elly8.net airport transfer it is, along with meet and greet inside arrivals and complimentary waiting after a tracked landing. If another operator's quote leaves the tip to you, rounding up for heavy luggage is common.
How much do you tip on a wedding limo?
Check the contract first; wedding quotes often include gratuity as a line item. If it is not included, many couples use the 15 to 20 percent range on the booked total and hand it over through the planner. On an Elly8.net wedding booking, a standard gratuity is already included.
Should I tip a driver in Italy?
Italy's official tourism site says tipping is not compulsory and there are no established rules, though leaving around 10 percent is customary when you are satisfied. On an Elly8.net booking in Rome, Milan, Florence or anywhere else, a standard gratuity is already in the price.
Are tolls and parking part of the gratuity?
No. They are separate costs. On Elly8.net bookings, tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost, apart from the gratuity already in the price. When comparing quotes, check whether another operator includes, estimates or adds these charges.
