How much to tip a private driver depends first on one fact: is a gratuity already included in what you paid? On Elly8.net, it is. Every fixed price includes the chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and airport meet and greet, so you owe nothing more at the end of the ride. An extra tip is entirely optional, for service that went beyond the booking.

Taxis and app rides are different. A taxi meter, an airport flat fare and an app quote normally exclude the tip, and regulators say so in their own rules. This guide explains how to check what you have paid for, gives simple tip arithmetic for the rides where a tip is expected, and covers the situations people actually ask about: hourly days, long airport waits, wedding chauffeurs, group trips and travel in Europe.

Do you need to tip a private driver?

Only if the gratuity is not already in the price. Elly8.net prices include standard gratuity, so no tip is expected; you may add one for exceptional service. Taxi meters and app fares usually exclude the tip, and in the US and Canada tipping those drivers is customary. Check your confirmation or quote for the word gratuity before you pay twice.

The confusion comes from the fact that "private driver" covers very different products. A pre-booked chauffeur with an all-in price has the gratuity built in. A taxi or an app ride does not. A quote from a limousine operator may or may not include it, and some add it as a separate percentage at checkout. The answer for each is in the paperwork, not in a rule of thumb.

See all-in package prices

How to tell whether the tip is already included

Look for one of three things.

The price description. Elly8.net states on every city page and confirmation that prices include standard gratuity. If a quote you have elsewhere says "plus gratuity", "service charge extra" or nothing at all, ask.

A separate line at checkout. Some operators add a gratuity percentage as its own line. That is a tip already paid; you do not need to add another.

The regulator's rule. For taxis, the official fare rules usually say it outright. The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission lists the metered fare and its surcharges and then adds "plus tips and any tolls" on its taxi fare page. Vancouver International Airport notes on its taxi page that its zone fares do not include gratuities.

Tip arithmetic for taxis and app rides

There is no official tipping rate in the United States or Canada, and the amount is yours to decide. Most people tip as a percentage of the fare. To keep the maths simple, here is what common percentages come to on published taxi fares. The fares are official; the percentages are illustrations, not a rule.

Published taxi fare (official source)10%15%20%
JFK to Manhattan flat fare, US$70 before surcharges and tolls (NYC TLC)US$7.00US$10.50US$14.00
MSY to the New Orleans CBD and French Quarter, US$36 for up to two passengers (MSY)US$3.60US$5.40US$7.20
YVR to downtown Vancouver zone fare, C$46 (YVR)C$4.60C$6.90C$9.20
PHX to downtown Phoenix flat rate, US$20 (Sky Harbor)US$2.00US$3.00US$4.00

Sources: NYC TLC, the MSY taxi page, YVR taxis and Phoenix Sky Harbor taxis. The New York flat fare has state and city surcharges and tolls on top, so tip on the fare, not on the tolls.

When you compare a taxi with a pre-booked car, add the tip to the taxi side. A US$36 taxi plus a tip in New Orleans is still far cheaper than a fixed car for two people with carry-ons, and we would take the taxi in that case. But a comparison that leaves the tip out flatters the meter.

A private driver for a day: four worked days

People who search for how much to tip a private driver are usually not booking a ten-minute ride. They are booking a driver for a day: a sightseeing loop, a winery or distillery trip, a run out to a national landmark and back. These four days use only published Elly8.net package prices, every one of which already includes standard gratuity.

Hoover Dam and Lake Mead from Las Vegas. The day-trip package is US$525 in a business sedan and US$1,050 in an Executive Sprinter for up to 12. The chauffeur drives out, waits while you visit the dam, and brings you back to the Strip. The Bureau of Reclamation's Hoover Dam site has the tour information, admission fees and directions you will plan around. Tip owed at the end: none. An extra thank-you makes sense if the day stretched because you added Lake Mead stops the chauffeur rearranged on the fly.

The Jack Daniel's Distillery from Nashville. The Lynchburg day trip is US$700 in a business sedan and US$1,400 in a Sprinter. This is exactly the kind of day where a driver earns gratitude: a tasting group, a long rural drive and a fixed time to be back for dinner on Broadway. Gratuity is already in the US$700.

Niagara Falls from Toronto. On the Elly8 fleet, the Niagara Falls day trip is US$1,015 in a business sedan and US$2,025 in an Executive Sprinter. A full day with a family, a boat ride and a winery stop on the way back is long for everyone; the chauffeur's standard gratuity is included, and anything extra is a personal choice.

Red Rocks and the foothills from Denver. The six-hour package is US$525 in a business sedan. Short, scenic and easy. No extra tip is expected.

The full set of day trips for every city is on the packages page, and the private city tours page explains how a touring day runs.

When the driver also acts as a guide

On a day trip, a good private driver does more than drive: suggests the photo stop with the best light, knows which entrance has the shorter line, finds lunch near the next stop. That local knowledge is part of the service you booked, and the standard gratuity in the price covers a normal day of it.

An extra tip is a fair way to recognise something beyond a normal day:

  • A long wait that was not the chauffeur's doing. A customs queue that ran far past the landing, or a meeting that ended late. Complimentary waiting after a tracked landing is included on airport pickups, and waiting beyond the included time is billed at cost, so an extra tip is a courtesy, not a charge.
  • Heavy lifting. Golf bags, skis, cases of wine bought on a winery day, a dozen suitcases for a family reunion.
  • Real problem-solving. A changed restaurant, a passport retrieved from the hotel, a route rebuilt around a closed road.
  • A very long day handled well. A ten-hour roadshow with eight stops and nothing missed.

Cash is the simplest way to give it, in the local currency.

Hourly bookings, roadshows and corporate days

Hourly bookings work the same way as packages: the gratuity is in the price. On the published lists, an hourly chauffeur in New York City is US$105 an hour in a business sedan with a 3-hour minimum, and the full-day chauffeur (eight hours) is US$775, both with standard gratuity included.

For business travel, the included gratuity is also an accounting convenience. A corporate account with monthly invoicing shows one all-in figure per ride, with no cash tips to reconcile and no receipt missing a gratuity line. Agencies booking for clients can use travel agent accounts on the same basis. Couples planning a wedding day will find the same logic in our guide to wedding limo cost, where the gratuity is already counted in every hourly total.

Airport transfers

On an Elly8.net airport transfer, the fixed price covers the chauffeur meeting you inside arrivals with a name board, flight tracking, complimentary waiting after a tracked landing, help with bags and the drive, in either direction. Our guide to airport limo cost breaks the price down line by line. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost; none of those is a tip, and none should be confused with one.

Groups: who tips, and how much

Groups create the most confusion, because six people each assume someone else has it handled, or all six hand over cash. Two simple rules help.

First, remember that Elly8.net prices are per vehicle, never per person, and the standard gratuity is per vehicle too. A Business SUV for six or an Executive Sprinter for twelve carries one included gratuity, whatever the headcount. Dividing the fare by the number of riders is arithmetic for comparison only.

Second, if the group wants to add something extra at the end of a long day, agree beforehand who will hand it over. One envelope from the organiser is clearer for everyone than a scramble at the curb, and the chauffeur is thanked once, properly.

Tipping in Europe and abroad

Tipping customs differ by country, and visitors from North America often worry about getting them wrong. With Elly8.net, the question mostly disappears: prices in London, Paris, Rome and every other European city include standard gratuity in exactly the same way as at home, and the price is charged in US dollars.

For taxis abroad, read the local fare rules. In Rome, for example, licensed taxis charge fixed fares from the airports set by the city, €55 per car from Fiumicino to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls, with supplements included, according to Roma Mobilità. Whether and how much to add on top is a matter of local custom, so a quick question to your hotel concierge is the most reliable guide.

Quick answers by situation

  • Elly8.net transfer, ordinary ride: no tip expected.
  • Elly8.net, long unplanned wait or exceptional help: optional extra, in cash.
  • Taxi or app ride in the US or Canada: a tip is customary and not included.
  • Another operator's limousine quote: read it; gratuity may be included, added at checkout or left to you.
  • Corporate travel on an account: gratuity is already in the invoiced price.

Frequently asked questions

How much should you tip a private driver?

If the price includes gratuity, as every Elly8.net price does, nothing more is expected. If it does not, as with most taxis and app rides in the US and Canada, a tip is customary and the amount is your choice; most people tip a percentage of the fare. Always check the quote or confirmation for the word gratuity first.

Is gratuity included in Elly8.net prices?

Yes. Every Elly8.net price, for airport transfers, hourly bookings and packages, includes standard gratuity along with the chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes and airport meet and greet. Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost. An extra tip is optional and only for exceptional service.

Should you tip on top of an included gratuity?

You do not have to. An included gratuity means the standard tip is already paid. Some travellers add a little in cash for something beyond the booking, such as a very long wait, a lot of heavy luggage or real help when plans changed. It is a personal choice, not an expectation.

Do you tip a taxi driver at the airport?

In most North American cities, yes, because the meter or flat fare excludes it. New York's Taxi and Limousine Commission lists the fare "plus tips and any tolls", and Vancouver airport notes its zone fares do not include gratuities. Tip on the fare rather than on tolls or surcharges.

How do you tip on an hourly or full-day booking?

On Elly8.net, the hourly rate and full-day packages already include standard gratuity, so the total on your confirmation is complete. If the chauffeur went well beyond the plan on a long day, an extra tip in cash at the end is a kind gesture, but it is not required.

Is tipping different in Europe?

Customs differ by country, so check locally for taxis and restaurants. Elly8.net prices in European cities include standard gratuity exactly as they do in North America, and are charged in US dollars, so there is nothing extra to calculate at the end of a transfer or a day tour.
