A San Antonio taxi is one of the better-value cab rides in a large US city, because the airport publishes its meter rates and the downtown fares are short. From San Antonio International (SAT) the airport says a cab to the downtown area starts at US$24 to US$29, the stand is at one place only, and up to six people can share if they and their bags fit safely. For one or two travellers heading to a River Walk hotel at a quiet hour, that is hard to beat.
The picture changes with a late flight, a family with child seats, a group with luggage or a schedule that cannot slip. That is where a pre-booked car at a fixed price earns its keep: Elly8.net's business sedan from SAT to the River Walk is US$150 per vehicle, all-in, with the chauffeur waiting inside. This guide sets out the real numbers, where to find a cab, and a fair verdict for each kind of trip.
How much is a taxi in San Antonio?
From San Antonio International, the airport lists taxi fares to the downtown area starting at US$24 to US$29 per cab. The meter is US$3.50 to start, US$2.70 for each mile after the first, US$0.40 a minute waiting, a US$1.25 airport departure fee and a US$20 minimum from the airport, plus US$1.00 at night.
Those figures come straight from the SAT taxi cab page, and they apply to cabs leaving the airport. The fare is per cab, not per person, so two colleagues sharing a ride downtown split one meter. The night surcharge applies from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The part people miss is the waiting rate. At US$0.40 a minute, a cab stuck in a downtown closure for twenty minutes adds US$8 to the meter. On an ordinary weekday afternoon that never happens. On a parade night during Fiesta, or when the Alamodome lets out, it can.
| SAT taxi charge | Published rate | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Initial drop | US$3.50 | Paid the moment the meter starts |
| Each additional mile after the first | US$2.70 | The main part of a longer ride |
| Waiting time | US$0.40 a minute | Traffic and closures add to the fare |
| Airport departure fee | US$1.25 | Added to rides leaving SAT |
| Airport departure minimum | US$20.00 | Even a short hop costs at least this |
| Night surcharge, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. | US$1.00 | Late arrivals pay slightly more |
| Downtown fares from SAT | from US$24 to US$29 per cab | Airport's own published guide |

Where to find a taxi at SAT
SAT has two terminals, A and B. The airport says taxis wait at the outer commercial curbside of Terminal A, and a Ground Transportation employee in a red shirt manages the queue. If you land at Terminal B, you collect your bags and walk next door to Terminal A for the cab stand.
Rideshare works from the same side of the airport. According to the SAT rideshare page, approved app drivers meet customers on the outer commercial curbside, lower level of Terminal A. So whichever you choose, taxi or app, a Terminal B arrival means a walk with luggage before the ride starts.
A pre-booked chauffeur works differently. With an Elly8.net airport transfer, the chauffeur tracks your flight number, meets you inside at baggage claim with a name board, at Terminal A or B, and walks you to the car. Complimentary waiting after a tracked landing is included, so a delayed connection through Dallas or Houston does not run up a bill.
Taxis around downtown and the River Walk
Inside the city, taxis are mostly a phone call, an app or a hotel doorman's whistle rather than a street hail. The big River Walk hotels have taxi lines or doormen who will call one, and cabs gather where crowds gather: the convention center, the Alamodome on event nights and the hotel driveways.
Downtown rides are short. The River Walk loop, the Alamo, the Henry B. González Convention Center and Market Square sit within a compact grid, and many visitors walk between them. A cab makes sense for the Pearl at the north end of the river, a dinner in a neighbourhood outside the core, or a ride back after dark in summer heat.
Two San Antonio quirks matter for taxis. First, many River Walk hotels have a street entrance and a river entrance; the cab can only use the street side, so give the driver the street address, not "the River Walk". Second, parade days during Fiesta San Antonio, which runs April 15 to 25, 2027, close downtown streets for hours, and a cab may only be able to drop you several blocks from your hotel.
The VIA bus: the real budget option
San Antonio's transit agency publishes its fares, and they are low. The VIA fares page lists a regular bus ride at US$1.30, an express bus at US$2.60, free transfers and a day pass at US$2.75. From the airport, the SAT public transportation page sends riders to the far west end of Terminal B on the lower roadway for VIA Route 5, which reaches downtown in about 30 minutes for US$1.30.
Once downtown, VIA's VIVA routes stop at or near most hotels, restaurants, the convention center and the main visitor sights. For a solo traveller with a backpack and a daytime arrival, the bus is the cheapest way in by a long way, and we would not argue otherwise. It is a poor fit for heavy bags, young children, late-night landings or anyone on a tight schedule.
Taxi vs rideshare vs VIA vs a pre-booked car
Here is how the four options compare for the most common trip, SAT to a downtown hotel, using published numbers where they exist. Rideshare prices are not published and move with demand, so we describe them rather than invent a figure.
| Option | Price for SAT to downtown | Where you board | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| VIA Route 5 | US$1.30 | Far west end of Terminal B, lower roadway | One traveller, light bag, daytime | About 30 minutes, bags on your lap |
| Taxi | from US$24 to US$29 per cab, plus fees | Terminal A outer commercial curb | One to two people, off-peak | Waiting time and night surcharge |
| Rideshare | app price, changes with demand | Terminal A outer curb, lower level | Short notice at quiet times | Surge after big events, car size |
| Elly8.net business sedan | US$150 per vehicle, fixed and all-in | Inside at baggage claim | Late flights, meetings, fixed budget | Book ahead |
| Elly8.net Executive Sprinter | US$390 per vehicle, fixed and all-in | Inside at baggage claim | Families and groups with luggage | Book ahead |
The Elly8.net price includes the chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes, a standard gratuity and meet and greet. Tolls and parking are billed at cost. The same fixed price applies in the other direction, so a car from your hotel to SAT for a departure is also US$150 in a business sedan.
Worked examples: four trips, four verdicts
A solo traveller, one carry-on, landing at 2 p.m. Take VIA Route 5 if you are not in a hurry, or a taxi if you want to be at the hotel quickly. Either is cheaper than a private car, and both work well at that hour.
Two colleagues landing at 11 p.m. for an 8 a.m. meeting. A taxi will probably cost the low end of the downtown range plus the US$1.00 night surcharge and departure fee, and it is a perfectly sensible choice. A pre-booked business sedan at US$150 costs more, but the chauffeur is already waiting inside if the flight lands after midnight, and the expense is a fixed line on the company report.
A family of five with two car seats and five bags. A standard cab may not fit the bags and the seats, and the airport's own guidance limits sharing to what fits safely. A business SUV at US$195 seats up to six with room for six bags, and the child seats are fitted before you land. Arithmetic for comparison only: that is US$39 a head, though the price is per vehicle.
A team of ten arriving for a convention. Three cabs, three meters and three receipts, or one Executive Sprinter at US$390, which seats up to 12 with room for 12 bags. Arithmetic for comparison only: US$39 per person. The Sprinter also keeps the group together for a dinner later; see conference transportation.
When a taxi is the right call
Be honest about it: a taxi is often the right answer in San Antonio. Short downtown hops, one or two people, daytime arrivals at SAT, light luggage and no deadline all point to a cab. The published airport fare range makes budgeting easy, and the cab stand at Terminal A is staffed during busy periods.
A taxi also wins on spontaneity. If you finish dinner at the Pearl and decide to head back to the hotel early, a cab or app ride is the obvious move. Nobody needs to book a car three hours in advance for a ten-minute ride.
When a pre-booked car wins
A fixed-price car is the better buy when any of these apply:
- Late or uncertain arrivals. The chauffeur tracks the flight and waits inside; complimentary waiting after a tracked landing is included.
- Groups and luggage. One SUV or Sprinter replaces two or three cabs, and the price is per vehicle.
- Child seats. Fitted on request before pickup, not negotiated at the curb.
- Event nights. During Fiesta, Alamodome games and concerts, or Spurs nights at the Frost Bank Center, app prices climb and taxis are busy. A car booked by the hour keeps a ride with you; see car service by the hour.
- Business travel. Fixed prices, monthly invoicing and traveller profiles through a corporate account.
- Day trips. A taxi meter running into the Texas Hill Country is the wrong tool. The 8-hour Hill Country day is from US$700 in a business sedan to US$1,400 in an Executive Sprinter.

Night rides and safety tips
Whatever you choose late at night, a few habits help. Use the official stand at Terminal A rather than accepting a ride from someone approaching you inside the terminal. Check the meter is running at the start of a cab ride. In an app, match the licence plate and driver name before you get in. With a pre-booked car, the confirmation email carries your booking details, and the chauffeur's details follow before pickup.
Texas law requires seat belts for everyone in the vehicle, as TxDOT reminds drivers and passengers. That applies in a cab, an app car and a chauffeured car alike, and it is one more reason families with small children prefer a car with the right seats already fitted.
How booking a fixed-price car works
- Enter the pickup and drop-off, and for SAT pickups add the flight number so the chauffeur can track the landing.
- Choose the vehicle: business sedan, business SUV, First Class sedan or SUV, or Executive Sprinter. The fleet page shows seats and bags.
- Press Reserve now to pay, or use the web booker for any address not on the price list. Confirmation arrives by email.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a taxi from San Antonio airport to downtown?
The airport lists fares to the downtown area starting at US$24 to US$29 per cab. The meter is US$3.50 to start and US$2.70 per additional mile, with US$0.40 a minute waiting, a US$1.25 departure fee and a US$1.00 night surcharge from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. The fare is per cab, so people sharing split it.
Where is the taxi stand at SAT?
At the outer commercial curbside of Terminal A, where a Ground Transportation employee in a red shirt helps with the queue. Rideshare pickups use the outer commercial curb on the lower level of Terminal A as well, so travellers landing at Terminal B walk next door for both options.
Is a taxi cheaper than Uber in San Antonio?
It depends on the hour. The taxi meter is published, while app prices change with demand, so at quiet times the two are often close and after a big event the taxi meter can be the steadier price. Neither publishes a guaranteed fare for your exact trip, which is the gap a fixed-price car fills.
How many people can share a taxi from SAT?
The airport says up to six may share a cab if both luggage and passengers fit safely. In practice, five adults with full-size cases rarely fit one car. For a group, a business SUV seats up to six with room for six bags, and an Executive Sprinter up to 12, each at one fixed price per vehicle.
Is the VIA bus a good way to get from SAT to the River Walk?
For one traveller with light luggage in daytime, yes. VIA Route 5 leaves from the far west end of Terminal B on the lower roadway and reaches downtown in about 30 minutes for US$1.30. It is less practical late at night, with heavy bags, with young children or on a tight schedule.
What does a pre-booked car from SAT to the River Walk cost?
A fixed Elly8.net business sedan is US$150 per vehicle, a business SUV US$195, a First Class SUV US$240, a First Class sedan US$265 and an Executive Sprinter US$390. Prices include the chauffeur, taxes, a standard gratuity and meet and greet inside the terminal. Tolls and parking are billed at cost, and the same price applies for the return to SAT.
