A licensed taxi from Rome's airports is one of the few airport rides in Europe with the price fixed by the city before you get in. From Fiumicino (FCO) it is €55 per car to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls, from Ciampino (CIA) €40, both including supplements. That makes the taxi rank an honest, predictable option for many arrivals, and it deserves to be said first.
The questions worth asking are the ones around the fare: whether your hotel is actually inside the walls, how long the rank queue is when several long-haul flights land together, whether four people and their suitcases fit in one white sedan, and what happens if you need a stop on the way. Those are the points where an app ride or a chauffeur booked in advance can make more sense, and the points this guide works through.
How much is a taxi from Rome airport to the city centre?
A licensed taxi from Fiumicino to central Rome inside the Aurelian Walls is a fixed €55 per car, and from Ciampino €40 per car, supplements included. Trips inside the ring road with no fixed fare cannot exceed €80 from Fiumicino. An Elly8.net business sedan is a fixed US$180 from FCO and US$125 from CIA.
Aeroporti di Roma publishes the full list on its Fiumicino taxi page, and the city's mobility agency, Roma Servizi per la Mobilità, sets out the same fares, plus Ciampino's, on its taxi page. Each fixed fare is per car, valid in both directions and inclusive of all supplements.
| Taxi route (either direction) | Fixed fare per car |
|---|---|
| Fiumicino to Rome inside the Aurelian Walls | €55 |
| Fiumicino to Ostiense station | €50 |
| Fiumicino to Tiburtina station | €60 |
| Fiumicino to Ciampino airport | €55 |
| Fiumicino to Civitavecchia port | €130 |
| Fiumicino to any address inside the ring road with no fixed fare | metered, no more than €80 |
| Ciampino to Rome inside the Aurelian Walls | €40 |
| Ciampino to Tiburtina or Ostiense station | €40 |
Roma Mobilità gives the typical journey from Fiumicino into the walls as about 40 to 50 minutes and from Ciampino as about 30 minutes. Fiumicino is about 34 km (21 mi) from the historic centre, roughly 54 minutes on a clear road; Ciampino is about 18 km (11 mi), roughly 30 minutes.
The fine print behind the fixed fare
The walls decide the price. The €55 and €40 fares cover addresses inside the Aurelian Walls, which hold the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, the Spanish Steps, Termini and Trastevere. Hotels outside them, for example in Parioli or EUR, are on the meter. From Fiumicino, the city caps a metered ride with origin or destination inside the Grande Raccordo Anulare ring road at €80. Check which side of the walls your hotel sits on before you assume the lower number.
Direct trips only. Roma Mobilità states that the fixed fares apply only when the route is direct to the address given, without detours or other pickups. Dropping a colleague at a second hotel, or stopping to collect keys from an apartment agent, turns the trip back into a metered one.
Minimums at Fiumicino. ADR adds two airport-specific rules. For destinations from Fiumicino with no predetermined fare, the minimum fare is €35. A ride between the airport and the Municipality of Fiumicino itself, for example to an airport hotel or the coast, has a minimum of €25. Those matter for travellers staying near the airport the night before an early flight.
Spotting a real taxi. ADR says authorised taxis at Fiumicino are white, with a TAXI sign on the roof and the licence number shown on the doors, on the back and inside. It warns that any other vehicle near the arrivals exit may be driven by someone without a regular licence, at a fare different from the city's. Italy's national tourism portal gives the same advice on its getting around page: be wary of anyone offering a ride as you arrive.
Where the ranks are, and what the wait looks like
At Fiumicino, ADR places the taxi ranks at the arrivals level of Terminal 1 and Terminal 3. Fiumicino's own municipal taxis wait on the main road in front of both terminals and on the secondary road in front of the railway station. At Ciampino, Roma Mobilità says the taxis for Rome wait in the square in front of the airport.
Neither the airport nor the city publishes live rank waits, so no honest guide can promise a number. The pattern is easy to picture, though. Flights from North America tend to arrive in a morning cluster, and when several wide-bodies empty at once, the people who clear passport control and baggage claim first are at the front of the queue. A family that waited for a stroller at the oversize belt joins behind them.
App rides have their own version of the wait. You request after landing, the app matches a driver, and you walk to the pickup point the app gives you. Uber's airport pages show an estimate of how busy the airport usually is at that hour, based on historic trends, but the real wait only appears once you request.
A pre-booked chauffeur removes the queue rather than shortening it. The flight is tracked, the chauffeur is inside the arrivals hall with your name before you reach the exit, and waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary. If passport control takes an hour, nobody is waiting on a meter.
What rideshare costs from Rome's airports
Uber publishes monthly averages for its Rome airport routes, and they are the only rideshare numbers we would quote. When we checked in October 2026, the averages from Fiumicino into Rome were about €58 for Taxi, €71 for Comfort, €75 for Taxi Van, €101 for Black and €116 for Van. From Ciampino into Rome they were about €47 for Taxi, €63 for Comfort and €88 for Black. Uber says these are averages, not fixed or guaranteed prices, and that live prices depend on demand.
Two details stand out. First, the cheapest app option is itself a licensed taxi, booked through Uber with a maximum fare shown before you confirm and the booking fee included, so it runs a little above the rank fare. Second, UberX did not appear among the options listed on the Rome airport pages we checked. Our Uber Black in Rome guide looks at the premium tier in detail.
The train and the airport bus, for balance
For a solo traveller with a carry-on, rail is hard to beat. ADR's train page gives the Leonardo Express as 32 minutes nonstop from Fiumicino to Roma Termini, every 15 minutes, for €14, with the first departure from the airport at 05:38 and the last at 23:27. FL1 regional trains run to other Rome stations, including Tiburtina.
From Ciampino, Trenitalia's Ciampino Airlink combines a 10-minute bus from the square in front of the airport to Ciampino station with a train to Termini, for €2.70 per person. Both options end at a station, so the cost of the last stretch to your hotel, on foot over cobbles, by metro or by a second taxi, belongs in the comparison.
Night arrivals
Late landings change the comparison. The last Leonardo Express leaves Fiumicino at 23:27, according to ADR. After that, the choices are a taxi from the rank, an app ride, or a night bus: ADR's bus page says night services run from Fiumicino, especially towards Roma Termini, with evening and after-midnight departures. A delayed flight that lands after midnight with tired children is the clearest case for a car that is already assigned to you, tracked against the real landing time.
Side by side: four ways from Fiumicino

| Licensed taxi | €55 per car inside the walls | a sedan's boot | rank, Terminal 1 or 3 arrivals | two people, walk-up, direct trip |
| Uber Taxi or Black | about €58 or €101 average | not guaranteed, per Uber | app pickup point | app users, flexible plans |
| Elly8.net business sedan | US$180 per vehicle | 3 passengers, 2 bags | inside arrivals, name board | late flights, fixed budgets |

When the taxi is the right answer
- Two travellers, a suitcase each, a hotel inside the Aurelian Walls and no stops on the way. At €55 fixed from Fiumicino or €40 from Ciampino, the rank is fair value.
- A spontaneous change of plan, such as a delayed flight that lands after your booked car would have been released.
- A short hop after arrival, for example from Termini to a hotel near Piazza della Repubblica.
When booking a car instead is worth it
- Groups and luggage. Four adults with four large cases rarely fit one sedan taxi comfortably. A business SUV for six with six bags, or an Executive Sprinter for twelve, keeps everyone in one vehicle at a price per vehicle, not per person.
- Hotels outside the walls, or a second stop. Where the taxi falls back on the meter, our fare from Fiumicino stays fixed for the published centre addresses, and the web booker quotes a fixed price for anything further out, including a multi-stop drop.
- Children. Child and booster seats are fitted on request before pickup.
- Very early and very late. Departures for a 7 a.m. flight and arrivals after the last train are when a car already assigned to you matters most.
- Business travel. Monthly invoicing, fixed fares at both airports and NDAs on request through a corporate account.
A useful rule of thumb: once you are three or more, or carrying more than two large bags, divide the fixed fare by the number of travellers. As arithmetic for comparison only, a US$235 business SUV shared by four adults is under US$60 each, before currency, against €14 each for the train plus the onward leg from Termini. Our prices remain per vehicle.

Ciampino, briefly
Ciampino handles mostly European short-haul flights, so most North American visitors only meet it after a connection or on a side trip. The taxi fare to the centre is €40 per car. The Elly8.net fixed fare is from US$125 in a business sedan, US$165 in a business SUV and US$325 in an Executive Sprinter, with round trips from US$240. A transfer between the two airports, for a connection that changes airport, is a fixed €55 by taxi; through us, request it in the web booker.
Departures: the same rules in reverse
The taxi fixed fares apply in both directions, so a hotel inside the walls to Fiumicino is also €55. Elly8.net airport fares are the same fixed price in either direction too: a business sedan from the historic centre to Fiumicino is US$180, to Ciampino US$125. For an early departure, book as soon as your flight is confirmed; cancellation stays free until 72 hours before pickup, so an early booking costs nothing if plans change in good time. Frequently asked questions
How much is a taxi from Fiumicino to Rome?
A licensed taxi from Fiumicino to any address inside the Aurelian Walls is a fixed €55 per car, supplements included, according to Aeroporti di Roma and Roma Mobilità. Addresses inside the ring road but outside the walls go on the meter, capped at €80. The fare is the same in the other direction.
How much is a taxi from Ciampino to central Rome?
A fixed €40 per car to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls, supplements included, and €40 to Tiburtina or Ostiense station. Taxis wait in the square in front of the terminal. An Elly8.net business sedan from Ciampino to the historic centre is a fixed US$125 per vehicle.
Does the fixed taxi fare allow a stop on the way?
No. Roma Mobilità says the fixed fares apply only to a direct trip to the address given, without detours or other pickups. With a stop, the meter applies. An Elly8.net booking can include a stop: add it in the web booker and the desk returns a fixed price.
Is Uber cheaper than a taxi from Rome airport?
Not usually. Uber's own monthly averages showed its Taxi option at about €58 from Fiumicino into Rome, a little above the €55 rank fare, with Comfort at about €71 and Black at about €101. Uber says these are averages, and live prices move with demand.
How can you avoid unlicensed drivers at Fiumicino?
Use the official rank at Terminal 1 or Terminal 3 arrivals, where taxis are white with a roof sign and a licence number on the doors, or book a car in advance. ADR warns that other vehicles near the exit may be unlicensed. A pre-booked chauffeur meets you inside arrivals with a name board.
Is a pre-booked car worth it for two people?
For two travellers with light bags and a hotel inside the walls, the €55 taxi is fair value. A car booked in advance earns its price with children, more luggage than a sedan boot holds, a late landing, a stop on the way or a fixed budget in US dollars.
